1. Matt Lewis Returns to London Stage!

Harry Potter’s beloved Matthew Lewis (the heroic Neville Longbottom) is returning to the stage in a London West End production of Owen McCafferty’s Unfaithful. The play is described as a dark comedy about relationships on the edge. Working with Sean Campion (Stones in His Pockets), Niamh Cusack (The Winter’s Tale) and Ruta Gedmintas (Backbeat), Matt Lewis released promotional photos and posters on his twitter this week:

What’s On Stage reported on the casting, saying:

“Matthew Lewis, best known for playing Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter film franchise, will star in the London premiere of Unfaithful, a new play by Owen McCafferty (Shoot The Crow).

“Directed by Adam Penford (A Small Family Business), the play is a dark comedy about relationships on the brink. It was first performed at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in 2014.

“Lewis’ theatre credits include Verdict and Our Boys at the Duchess Theatre.

“Unfaithful runs at Found111 from 31 August to 8 October, with previews from 25 August.”

2. Harry Potter Young Adult Cast Round Up

In a series of “round ups” we have been summarising the many movies, plays and other projects associated with Harry Potter alumni. The YA cast from Potter includes the trio and J.K. Rowling’s ‘Big Six’, so it’s unsurprising that they’re on all sorts of exciting endeavours!

Aside from being UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and leader of a feminist book club, Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) is – as we know – an amazing actress. She’s currently in cinemas starring as ‘Lena’ in The Colony – a thriller based around the cult Colonia Dignidad.

She recently interviewed The Circle co-star Tom Hanks on feminism and the movie industry – the movie is based on Dave Egger’s book, and is set for initial release this year.

Emma is also set to portray the iconic leading lady Belle in Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast in 2017. Even ‘the original Belle’, Paige O’Hara, is excited to see her take over the role!

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) has recently appeared in is currently in cinemas as a villain in Now You See Me 2, and has just started in his theatre role in Privacy, which features Edward Snowden.

A new trailer and poster for Dan’s upcoming spy-thriller Imperium have recently been released, which you can view below – he will be portraying nervous undercover FBI agent / white supremacist, Nate Foster. The film is set to be released in August. Entertainment Weekly reports:

“The director says — worryingly — that the more he learned about the topic, the more timely and relevant it seemed. “We’re witnessing a surge in far-right groups all across Europe; in some cases they’re nearly winning national elections,” says Ragussis. “We have a stereotype of what it means to be a white supremacist, but when I began collaborating with Michael and doing my own research, I was stunned by the depth and the extent of this movement.”

Ragussis made every effort to authentically portray the experience of going undercover, as well as the modern-day white supremacist community. “There’s a large white supremacist rally in the middle of the film that we had spent months researching and planning,” the filmmaker explains. “There were so many details that had to be captured to try to make it real and authentic. I’d read about them, seen them, watched videos of them — but to actually see it come to life by our own hands was something I’ll never forget. Someone even called the news and erroneously reported a Klan rally in their neighborhood! So to that extent, I suppose we did our job.””

Dan will also star in Jungle – a psychological thriller based around the story of Yossi Ghinsberg’s memoir of his trip to the Amazon, which was included in The Discovery Channel’s I Shouldn’t Be Alive.

Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) is set to star in Sick Note with Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), after his recent performance in Moonwalkers with Fantastic Beasts actor Ron Perlman

Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) has been cast as a series regular in CW’s The Flash. He will be portraying Julian Dorne – a Central City Police Department crime scene investigator. Read more here.

Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) recently wrote, produced and directed short movie Medusa’s Ankles with Potter co-star Jason Isaacs, which is set for release this year. She also raised money for Film Aid by making her own ‘Come Dream With Me’ t-shirts, which got the support of many Potter co-stars, and even J.K. Rowling herself!

Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) is currently starring in  Me Before You alongside Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who).
He is also (almost) confirmed to be  co-starring as ‘Lenny’ in Terminal, along with Margot Robbie , Simon Pegg, Mike Myers and more. The film is being produced by Harry Potter producer, David Barron. Read more at Matthew lewis.com here.

Alfred Enoch (Dean Thomas) will be returning to CB’s hit show How to Get Away With Murder for its third season on September 22nd.

Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) and Katie Leung (Cho Chang) recently took the Ilvermorny sorting tests on Pottermore, both being sorted into the same house as J.K. Rowling: Thunderbird:

Sorted. #Ilvermorny

Evanna also appeared at the premiere of David Yates’s new film The Legend of Tarzan:

Katie Leung is set to star in The Foreigner – a film based on 1992 novel The Chairman, and co-starring Pierce Brosnan and Jackie Chan.

Lastly, Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown) has continued to make videos on her eponymous Youtube channel (here). She also appeared in Call the Midwife, and is set to star in Modern Life Is Rubbish, directed by Daniel Gill, who is known for being assistant Director on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

Hope you’re looking forward to all these upcoming features from our favourite YA Potter actors as much as we are! Be sure to take a look at the adult actor round ups, split into Part 1 (here) and Part 2 (here)!

3. Happy Birthday to Matt Lewis and Dobby!

Today we’d like to wish a very happy (belated) birthday to Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), who turned 27 yesterday! Matt–one of the most recent Potter stars to join the Hufflepuff ranks–stars in the new film Me Before You, based on the novel by Jojo Moyes, currently in theaters.

We’d also like to honor our favorite house-elf, Dobby! This “free elf” paved the way for house-elves everywhere with his paid position at Hogwarts and progressive view of house-elf freedom. Though initially somewhat misguided in his attempts to help Harry and his friends, Dobby proved to be a loyal friend and an integral part in the escape from Malfoy Manor in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

4. Matt Lewis talks “Post-Potter” in New Interview

Harry Potter alum, Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) recently sat down for a photoshoot with Interview Magazine. In this photo shoot, Matt kept all of his clothes on. He also discussed his life in the five years since the wrap up of the Harry Potter films.

Matt Lewis has covered a number of roles since his Longbottom days. He has taken on everything from romantic comedies and “chick flicks,” to sketchy characters in crime dramas. Matt explained to Interview Magazine how he came to take on such roles, saying:

“Some of the more interesting characters are the ones that aren’t heroic, that aren’t James Bond-esque,” Lewis explains over the phone. “I quite like the interesting ones, so I never really say, ‘I won’t do that, I won’t do this’ or ‘I want to do this or that.’ I like to keep an open mind… [I’m interested in] the idea of people wanting to discuss something that’s happened in their life or that’s impacted or changed them,” he continues.

“On the flip side of that, sometimes it’s nice to do something that’s fun, a movie where people are going to come in, and switch off for an hour and a half. I feel like if you can do one of those two things, if you can tell a great story that affects people or you can make them have fun, then you’re doing all right.”

Matt Lewis discussed how he took on the role of Patrick in the summer flick, Me Before You, and his darker character of Sean in the TV drama, Happy Valley.

On Patrick: “It was quite different. In the book, Patrick is a bit of a dick. He is obviously very focused on himself; he’s self-centered and won’t give a whole lot of time to Louisa’s needs, wants, and potential in life. We wanted to keep the inherent features of Patrick in the movie but we wanted to make it a little bit less black-and-white, a bit more ambiguous as to her ultimate decision. We wanted to see more of a reason why Louisa was with Patrick for the seven years…It can be a scary thing to suddenly leave your life behind and say, “I’m going to go and realize my full potential.” It can be quite daunting and we wanted to convey that.”

On Sean: “There were quite a few nerves involved with that for the few months of preparation for it. I just wanted to make sure that I did it justice.”

Then it was just the idea of trying to get into Sean’s mind. Luckily, for me, Sally understands her characters very well; she has vivid images of where they’ve come from, where they’re going, why they do what they do, etcetera. I had to pick at her brain and find Sean’s motivation, which was daunting for sure, but it all helped in trying to create this character—this young man who is very, very lost.

You don’t play him as the bad guy; you just play what’s on the page and you play his life, and his life was that he moved from town to town, no one had really ever given a shit about him, he’s got a very bad temper and often he regrets that. He drinks a lot and he can’t remember and it’s that frustration more than anything. The anger is a result of the frustration and once you realize that, the rest of it starts to fall into place.

In a flash back to when he was just 11 years old. Matt Lewis recounted his first day on set of the Harry Potter films. He discussed working with award-winning actors, such as Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith, but particularly recalling being in awe of Rik Mayall who was cast as Peeves, a role that didn’t make it past final edit cuts. Lewis talked about how Harry Potter changed how he approached acting, and took on different roles.

img-matthew-lewis_112213499698.jpg_v_thumb

“I can remember quite clearly being 11 years old on the first one. We were at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland and it was the scene with Madam Hooch, where we have the broomstick lesson and Neville flies off and crashes into the wall…

“They looked after me very much and I had a week of my life just flying on this broomstick around this beautiful castle in the North of England. I thought, “If this is what my career is, if this is what I’m going to get paid to do for a living, then this is the dream.”

“I was sort of unaware of the caliber of who I was working with, but definitely their fame and their ability to a certain degree. There were a lot of things that those guys had been in and done that I was a huge fan of. At the time, I was a ridiculously big fan of Rik Mayall, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago. Rik was cast to play Peeves the Poltergeist in the first film, and unfortunately he was cut out in the end because of time issues, but he was superb in it.”

“I sat next to him at the read-through and I was completely lost for words. He really took me under his wing and started chatting me through the different characters behind the camera, who everybody was and what their job was, and he signed my script. It was a huge moment to be in that read-through surrounded by all of these amazing people who I’d seen on TV and then they were friendly and so unassuming.”

“Then the worst thing happens, you get to 15, 16 and start to realize, as you’ve already said, the sheer caliber of what they’ve done. You become much more aware of the craft and the medium. All of that camaraderie you’ve built up over the years suddenly takes a big hit because you go, “Oh god, I’ve been so blasé with these people. They’re actually all incredible and I’m just here chilling out with them.” So then you get a whole new fear that comes along. I was 18 when I finally got over that.”

img-matthew-lewis-_11185564057.jpg_pyramid1

When moving forward from the Harry Potter films, and looking to be recognized in other roles, Matt Lewis expresses the same catch-22 of the other Harry Potter “child stars”–eternal gratefulness that Harry Potter was their start, but seeking to break the labels of their Harry Potter characters and gain recognition for their acting abilities in other roles. Matt Lewis stated:

“It was an exciting time and quite strange [having done] them for 10 years but I was very ready to finish when we came to the last one. After playing the character for that amount of time, I wanted to do different things, I wanted to find new characters, and explore new avenues. I literally had no idea what I was going on to…”

“I wasn’t keen to jump back into a robe and be a wizard in something anytime soon but [I was interested in] anything that came up, really. I felt very much that I was starting at the bottom rung again and that being in Harry Potter was no gimmick; I was going to have to leave that behind to lose the Neville Longbottom tag and prove that I could do other things, learn, and understand.”

The article continues as Matt discussed growing up in Leeds, acting with his brother Anthony, hoping to work with his brother Chris, almost getting trampled to death by cows with his Me Before You costars, and much more. The entire article may be read here, accompanied by a gallery of pictures from the photo shoot.

5. Matthew Lewis is…a Hufflepuff!

Fair or not, the sorting quiz created by Pottermore is nothing if not in depth in an odd sort of way. Matthew Lewis who marvelously portrayed the often clumsy, but always-there-when-you-needed-him, Neville Longbottom, a Gryffindor, took J.K. Rowling’s sorting quiz today.

Watch as he gets a taste of this first hand when he sat down with Pottermore recently to discover his house. Unlike yesterday’s Bonnie Wright video, or Mondays Rupert Grint interview, this was less of a question and answer and more of a let’s just watch Matthew Lewis neurotically answer these questions.

It does seem, however that as more of the younger cast sits down to be sorted, the Hufflepuff’s have grabbed themselves some real big names. Gone, it would seem, are the days of Cedric Diggory being the best Hufflepuff.

Could the Hufflepuffs take one more star tomorrow? Be sure to check in and see if Evanna Lynch gets to follow Luna in the Ravenclaw house.

6. Daniel Radcliffe’s Throwback Photo With Matthew Lewis

Last Friday, Dan Radcliffe posted an adorable photo to Google+ of the day David Heyman took him, Matthew Lewis and Rupert Grint to a WWF match, two days before Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone started filming.

The photo only included Matt and Dan, but Dan left a lovely message supporting his fellow actor’s role in Happy Valley in the caption:

“Judging by the sign behind us I think William Regal was making his entrance! And judging by our faces we weren’t quite brave enough to boo him. It was very good night! Go watch the brilliant Mr. Lewis in season 2 of Happy Valley on Netflix!  Happy Friday everyone! – Dan”

As seen in the trailer, there is certain facial hair missing from Matt’s upper lip…The trailer can be seen below:

Warner Bros. released the trailer on YouTube, with the caption:

“The new Main Trailer for Me Before You – in UK cinemas 3 June 2016 – directed by Thea Sharrock and starring Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Jenna Coleman and Matthew Lewis, based on the novel by Jojo Moyes.

“Louisa “Lou” Clark (Clarke) lives in a quaint town in the English countryside. With no clear direction in her life, the quirky and creative 26-year-old goes from one job to the next in order to help her tight-knit family make ends meet.

“Her normally cheery outlook is put to the test, however, when she faces her newest career challenge. Taking a job at the local “castle,” she becomes caregiver and companion to Will Traynor (Claflin), a wealthy young banker who became wheelchair bound in an accident two years prior, and whose whole world changed dramatically in the blink of an eye. Embarking together on a series of adventures, both Lou and Will get more than they bargained for, and find their lives—and hearts—changing in ways neither one could have imagined.”

8. Matthew Lewis on ‘This Morning’

Matthew Lewis appeared on U.K. show This Morning on Monday, to talk about his role as Sean Balmforth in ITV’s Happy Valley.

Balmforth has a ‘murky back story’, currently putting him as suspect of a nasty crime, and with only two episodes to go, Lewis teases at answers to come:

“We’ve got two episodes to go. We’re going to have quite a lot of revelations in the next episode in regards to Sean and what he’s been up to and why he’s there”

“The problem with him is he’s not quite an alcoholic but he’s well on his way to becoming one and because of that he simply can’t remember a lot of stuff and there are a lot of blackouts in his memory – that’s why we have to piece together this jigsaw.”

You may have noticed the impressive moustache Lewis is flaunting lately. Apparently there are mixed views about it!:

“Funnily enough, no one comes near me when I’ve got this and I don’t know whether they don’t recognise me or because they are terrified of me! I’m not sure which it is, but it’s quite the repellent!”

Finally, Matthew told a story from A Celebration of Harry Potter in January, during which Lewis and Rupert Grint took part in various panels together. Apparently, Rupert had a confession to make!

“I saw Rupert last month – and I’d not seen him for a few years – and we were in Orlando together for the new Harry Potter Wizarding World thing and he told me that he’d been going to this restaurant.

“And I said ‘oh that’s one of my favourite restaurants’ and he said, ‘I know… because I’ve been putting all my food on your tab for the past several months!’

“Apparently when he came in the manager was like ‘oh you’re Matthew’s friend’ and he was like ‘yeah’ and [the manager] said ‘is Matthew picking this up?’ and Rupert said ‘yeah, he told me to come down and said he was covering it’ and it’s been going on my bill ever since!”

9. Matt Lewis in “Happy Valley” and “Me Before You”

Matt Lewis has been keeping busy since his Potter days. He is currently working on several projects, including the BBC1 TV crime drama, Happy Valley, and the spring-break romantic comedy flick, Me Before You.

The Mirror sat down with Matt and talked about his acting journey from playing the heroic Neville Longbottom to Happy Valley’s villainous Sean. It is quite the transition. Matt Lewis talked about the process he goes through to act the part, and get into the troubled character’s mind set. The Mirror reported:

Sean admits he picks up prostitutes and has memory black-outs after binge-drinking. Is he the murderer without even knowing it?

‘Sean goes to dark places and makes mistakes after he’s been drinking,’ says Matthew, 26.

‘He can’t escape the ghosts of his past and all these pent-up emotions explode in bursts of fury…Playing Sean is the biggest challenge of my acting career,’ adds Matthew.

‘It’s hard to get into his mindset as some of the things he does can’t be justified at all.’

Matthew is best known as bumbling Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films.

‘Neville and Sean are wildly different,’ he laughs. ‘Younger Harry Potter fans may want to wait a few years before watching me in Happy Valley.’

Moving from a dark and troublesome character to a workout-crazed boyfriend in this summer, Me Before You, Pop Sugar has put together a slide show of a few photos from behind the scenes on the set of Matt’s new film. A couple of pics can be seen below, the rest can be seen here.

11. More Exclusive Cast Interviews from ‘A Celebration of Harry Potter’!

Huffington Post and Hollywood Life have recently published two cast interviews with Matt Lewis, Rupert Grint, Evanna Lynch and Katie Leung following A Celebration of Harry Potter.

Rupert Grint thinks Hermione and Ron would be separated (if not divorced), none of them would overlook a role in Star Wars, and Rupert thinks Cursed Child made a huge mistake.

First up is Huff Post, and their representative really got the cast talking, giving a great introduction about the importance of breaking out of viewing these great actors as their characters:

“What I enjoy as I sit down to speak with the group is how much these adults are unlike their characters (except for maybe Lynch, who is still delightfully Luna Lovegood-esque). It seems obvious, but we’ve such a tendency to want to lock actors into their iconic roles. It is challenge breaking out of that, especially when you’re remembered as being a cute, or awkward, or weird, or chubby kid on screen. Yet each has grown up, and gone on to other acting gigs and new pursuits.”

This interview gave a broad sweep of the actor’s opinions on Fantastic Beasts, their characters, further roles in big franchises and more!

On giving advice to Fantastic Beasts and Cursed Child cast members:

Matt Lewis: I don’t know how much advice I could ever give anyone. The people who have been cast, as far as I’m aware of, are very, very experienced. They don’t need any advice from me. But I guess just enjoy it. It has been a hell of an experience for me, and everything associated with it: the people, the fans, the environment. It was a good gig to be on! Just enjoy it because there’s nothing else like it, literally in the world. It is unique.

Rupert Grint: I think it’s going to be a very different film, I think. I don’t know much about it, but as Matthew said, just enjoy it. Go with the flow.

Evanna Lynch: I’d say trust David Yates, as well. He always knows better on the film. Sometimes I would go, “Oh, I’m doing terrible, I’m messing up.” He would come along and suggest something tiny, and it would change everything. He is very clever. And he is the one who has transitioned from one to the other. He has the whole picture.

On involving themselves in any large-scale productions again:

Q: This was very much your childhood, and your job growing up. If you had the opportunity now to enter another franchise that would consume multiple years – like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars – would you be reluctant to join that production?

A:

Lynch: No. I loved it. I love the family feel, and the idea you can get deeper into your character over a year. I have been on films that were just three or five weeks, and sometimes I’ve been like, damn, I’d only just started to get into it. It was nice to have something you could develop it, and learn and grow alongside your character. And I just loved the family thing. I got very comfortable there.

Lewis: Hey, if Star Wars come knocking on the door tomorrow, I’m not going to go, “Um no, guys, I’m sorry, I don’t want to do four films, it’s fine.” No, of course not. I’d think about it, and I love Star Wars, etc. But there would definitely be a bit of trepidation in joining a big franchise again for that amount of time. Just simply because I’m really enjoying the diversity of the roles I’ve been given recently. Playing a character is great, but I love the process of finding someone, finding a character, creating and drawing it up. And trying to figure out what makes that person tick. When you do something for however many years, it can start to become – I don’t want to say mundane because it was never boring on the films. But you kind of lose that spark a little bit you get in that first day of school, or on a new job. It is exciting. And I’ve gotten that so often in the last couple years, I’d be reluctant to give that up.

Leung: I kind of agree with Matt. If it goes on for any longer than a certain period of time, you do get really comfortable and feel very safe. Having done all the projects after Potter, it has been a few weeks, a few months for a project. You do really get to know a character, and it is wonderful knowing that, once you stop filming or being on stage and being that character, it essentially dies. So I quite like that. Of course, it depends who the character is you’re going to be playing. But yeah, if it’s Star Wars …

Lewis: Star Wars is welcomed.

Grint: I don’t know. I don’t think it’s put me off. There’s pros and cons. Harry Potter could be at times quite suffocating. It did take up our whole lives. So yeah, I suppose there would be tiny bit of reluctance. Now that I’m out of it, I can see beyond it and it’s nice to have a real life, and do things you want. There’s a lot of freedom in that. But yeah, I think it all depends on the material.

Who knows – maybe a role as another Resistance pilot, or as a key character to unveiling Rey’s mysterious past will come up. Make it happen, Disney!

The Huff Post representative also asked where they’d like to think their Potter characters will be in the future.

As we know, Ron and Hermione were married with two children (Rose and Hugo) at Nineteen Years Later, all of whom attended the 427th Quidditch World Cup in 2014. Ron and Hermione’s relationship seems to be going well – that is, unless you take Rupert Grint’s word for it:

Grint: [laughs] I would expect Ron has probably divorced Hermione already. I don’t think that relationship would have done very well.

Lynch: What?!

Like living in his own, low-rent bachelor pad?

Grint: Yeah. Exactly. He’s living on his own, in a little one-bedroom apartment. He hasn’t got a job.

Lynch: Don’t say divorced. Say they’ve split up. They can reconcile.

Grint: Yeah, they’re briefly separated.

Ron is on Tinder doing horribly…

Grint: Yeah!

Lewis: Living in a one-bedroom studio apartment all alone, doing nothing. He lives in Kings Cross, right in that area.

Evanna took a more career-related view for Luna, and we can definitely see this happening:

Lynch: I think Luna would have an adventure documentary series. She becomes a naturalist, and I think she’d travel the world and have a show. I could be a wildlife narrator.

Like a David Attenborough of the wizard world?

Lynch: Yeah, and she would prove all her creatures exist. Everyone is so dubious of her, and I’d like her to show they’re real.

Anybody else want this to become a mini-series?!

Katie Leung had aspirations for her character – we love her no-nonsense view of Cho:

Katie Leung: I reckon Cho would probably have become a really successful entrepreneur, and really cold and ruthless.

Lynch: Oh my god! [laughs]

[Interviewer] I like this.

Leung: Yeah, she’s cried all the tears she could cry, and now she’s become real cold and heartless.

Lewis: This is dark! I love this!

[Interviewer] What kind of entrepreneur? She runs a tech company? Or a developer who tears down bachelor pads like Ron’s?

Leung: Yeah, yeah, that! Exactly.

Lynch: Oh…

Matthew Lewis bases his on information he received from J.K. Rowling herself, and even works Rupert’s view of Ron into his vision:

Lewis: Oh god. Neville works at the school, right? So he’s a professor, just enjoying that. Maybe he’s trying to get Ron a job, man. And he keeps throwing it back in his face, like, “I don’t need your help, Neville; Jesus, just leave it.” And I’m like, “Come on, it’s fine, we’ll sort it out, just trying to get you back into the fold.” Yeah, him and Hermione don’t see eye to eye because I’ve taken Ron’s side in the relationship, obviously. They’ve got everyone split off, friends wise. I don’t know who you guys chose? Did you choose Hermione?

Lynch: Ron!

Leung: No, Ron.

Lewis: Are you Ron as well? Jeez, Hermione is thin on the ground with friends!

Leung: Well, I’ll go with Hermione, then.

Lynch: I think Ron would need more help. Hermione would handle herself better.

Grint: Yeah, he’s in a bad way.

[Interviewer] But Ron could have a job as a replacement for Mr. Filch

Grint: Yeah!

Lewis: Yeah, I’ll get you in as the caretaker of the school, man. We’ll sort it out. Don’t worry about it.

Grint: Just get me out there. Just get me out of the house.

Lynch: And we’ll get you back together.

Hollywood Life‘s interview focussed on J.K. Rowling’s newest endeavour: Cursed Child. Rupert Grint thinks they’ve made a huge mistake!:

“Um yeah, I think they made a huge mistake in not casting me,”

He reportedly said, but of course he was joking – we’re all sure Paul Thornley is going to do an amazing job!

“No, no. I think it’s going to amazing, that it’s going on, and I can’t wait to see it.”

In a similar vein to his interview with MTV, Matthew Lewis spoke about feeling like his role as Neville was complete:

“I feel like the story arch that Jo wrote and that we tried our best to put on screen was a complete one,”

“I took that journey and finished it the way I wanted to. He will always hold a fun place in my heart, but I don’t feel like there is more that I can do with Neville. I’m happy to leave him.”

Evanna Lynch, however, has something to say about not being cast!:

“I don’t feel that way at all …  As happy as I am that they are exploring the universe and that there are new stories in the universe, I’m so angry I’m not a part of it…100% I’d go back and do more.”

So there you have it – Evanna will soon be portraying a Resistance Pilot, the Wizarding World’s very own David Attenborough, and a West End star (kidding, unfortunately).

Matt plays a character named Patrick, Lou’s (Clarke) small-town steady boyfriend before she goes and works for Will (Claflin).

Though Matt’s “obsessed with with sports and diet” character isn’t featured in the new trailer, which focuses solely on the leading protagonists, but it looks like a great spring break flick and we can’t wait to see Matt on the silver screen. The movie premieres March 4.

13. Matt Lewis in “Happy Valley”

News on Matt Lewis’s (Neville Longbottom) new role in BBC One’s popular dramatic TV series, Happy Valley, is starting to emerge. Radio Times gave insight into the second season of Happy Valley, which is to make its season premiere next week, February 9, at 9:00 PM.

We’ve noticed that new mustache on Matt’s up lip, and it has already made its appearance in his role as Sgt. Drum Drummond in Ripper Street. Pictures released by Radio Times show that the ‘stache is staying, and will also star as apart of Matt’s character in Happy Valley.

99019

Matt is joining the Happy Valley cast with another face that is familiar to Harry Potter fans. Shirley Henderson, who plays Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter series, will be joining ranks with the killer Sarah Lancashire’s Catherine Cawood is hunting for. Matt will be playing a character named Sean Balmforth.

Not much is known about Matt’s character, Sean Balmforth. The BBC recently released an extended media pack full of interviews with the cast, including Matt, who offered a little insight into his new character. The BBC interviews reported:

“Q: How would you describe your character?

“A: Sean has had a bad start in life and it’s defined him in ways that are out of his control. He’s not an alcoholic, as in he doesn’t need it to function but he is well on his way to becoming one. He’s angry and lost and finds it difficult to express his emotions which when coupled with his drinking can become a tinderbox.

“Q: Was your character challenging to play?

“A: It was tough to get into his mind. I can’t say too much without giving away parts of the story that we will discover along the way with Sean but he’s in a very dark place and it gets worse for him throughout. Getting into the mind of somebody like that with those problems and those thought processes was daunting. Luckily I had a superb cast and crew around to help out.”

Matt talked of his experiences on set, why he chose to take on this roll in Happy Valley, and being able to watch and learn from the show’s the two leading ladies.

“Q: What appealed to you about this project?

“A: Sally Wainwright and Sarah Lancashire. I hadn’t seen the first series until after I’d been cast but I knew the sheer talent involved in the project and how successful the first series had been. I’d worked with Sarah and Siobhan Finneran about 20 years previous and the chance to do that again was amazing. The opportunity to work with Sally and the complexity of the character she had created meant I couldn’t say no even if I wanted to.

“Q: Are there any anecdotes you can tell us about that happened during filming?

“A: There was a wonderful moment off set when the crew were setting up and Sarah and Siobhan were talking about a big scene they had coming up in a few days. Sarah half knew it and Siobhan hadn’t really looked at it. They decided to run it together and I feel so fortunate that I was there to watch it. It was a big scene, about ten pages or something and after about 4 or 5 pages Siobhan had gotten as far as she’d prepared. Sarah kept going and so Siobhan basically guessed what her character would say in the situation and it just fit. Every single time it fit and Sarah had a cue and was able to keep going with her dialogue. It was mind-blowing, they inhabit their characters so well and they work off each other like real sisters. It was such a pleasure to watch. I wasn’t there for the actual shooting of the scene a few days later but I bet it was a corker.”

As to the other Matt Lewis film and tv appearances we can look forward too,

“I shot a film for Warner Brothers called Me Before You a few months before Happy Valley so that’ll be out in 2016 and I’ve just finished a new season of Ripper Street which is also on in 2016. Filming on the next season of that starts late January so I’m growing my 19th century sideburns and moustache back as we speak.”

More on Happy Valley, including an interview with Shirley Henderson as she discusses her character, can be seen in the media pack, here, and on the Happy Valley BBC program web page, here. Thanks to MuggleNet for reporting the scoop. The trailer released for Happy Valley can be seen below.

16. Matt Lewis talks finding his “Ripper Street family”

Matt Lewis, known in the Harry Potter family as hero Neville Longbottom, has found joy in some of his new post-Potter projects. We are delighted for him. Matt sat down with What’s on TV to talk about his role in the show, Ripper Street. He also described much of the environment on set and finding acceptance from the cast and crew of the well established show.

Talking of his character with What’s on TV, Matt said:

“Sergeant Samuel Drummond is a new desk sergeant at the new police station and he is basically part of a new generation of police officer who are involved with a lot more of the science and technological side of modern day policing.

“So he’s in control of the telegram, the micro reader and the telephone systems and makes sure everyone uses these new ideas that are supposed to make the Met much more effiecient. But he’s also got a lot to learn, he’s just out of police academy or whatever, he’s a bit green.”

17. Matt Lewis Looking to “Mix it Up” in Interview with Evening Standard

Matt Lewis is lovingly known by all of us as Neville Longbottom. Quite understandably, after being known as our geeky hero for many years, Matt wants to be known as himself.

Matt Lewis sat down with the Evening Standard for an interview, and talked of his career post-Potter, the different directions he has gone, wanting to “mix it up” after doing a franchise for ten years, and those photos in his underwear (taken for June 2015 of Attitude magazine) that are still causing quite a stir.

The Evening Standard reports:

We are at the Soho Hotel to discuss his role in Ripper Street, the Victorian crime series that has been resurrected by Amazon Prime, as well his turns in police drama Happy Valley, and the film adaptation of Jojo Moyes’s novel Me Before You, out this summer, in which he plays a triathlete.

‘This year’s roles appealed because “they were totally different”. “Having played the same character for 10 years I jump at every opportunity I have to mix it up. Going away to do Harry Potter was a bit of a ballache,” he continues in his deadpan Yorkshire accent, before realising this could sound brattish. “Don’t get me wrong, I sound like a twat. It was such an opportunity and there’s me going ‘I want to go to the pub with my mates’. That feeling disappeared. I realised I was doing an incredible job.”

“I would never in a million years regret doing Harry Potter. I owe so many things in my life to it,” he says.

When Lewis revealed his newly ripped body to the world by posing topless on the front of Attitude magazine’s June 2015 issue, he received so much attention that he had to turn off his phone for three days. The worst comment was from Harry Potter author J K Rowling, he says. “She told me, ‘I’ll fully support you in everything you do, but next time keep your clothes on’. That was awkward.”

Matt went on to discuss more awkward moments. The lowest point in his Harry Potter career, Helena Bonham Carter accidentally puncturing his eardrum with a wand. Matt also discussed how his acting life began–even before Potter. He started very young, and even after Potter, took a few stage acting roles for a challenge. He didn’t know about the Harry Potter plays (Cursed Child), though. The Evening Standard wrote:

Lewis has been acting since he was five, following his older brother Anthony, who is also an actor, and has appeared in Casualty. They now live together near Alexandra Palace (“further north than Jeremy Corbyn’s constituency”).

“I assumed everyone acted when they grew up,” says Lewis. “I copied my brother on everything he did so I fell into it. I don’t remember deciding I wanted to act. My parents encouraged but never pushed.”

After Potter finished he did a play “to learn my craft” and it took him four months to be given a good review: “I hadn’t appreciated there would be paying customers and it was a [job.] Suddenly I was out of my depth.”

Ripper Street appealed because, Lewis says, “I have a morbid fascination with serial killers. This show is about dramatic human stories that happen to be set in Victorian England. The first episode deals heavily with imperialism, immigration, Islam, murder, police corruption and all these things we are still talking about today. Man’s inhumanity to man is an interesting topic.”

Happy Valley is another police story, set in the present day but again with “horrible people doing horrible things”.

“Without sounding like a wanky actor, it was one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever undertaken. I had to go to some pretty dark places. I was strung up really tight.”

If Lewis has time he reads all his Twitter mentions “because if people are taking the time to write you a message the least you can do is read it. Jo Rowling has the same attitude.”

Matt goes on to discuss body image and of the pressure and lessons he learned from his Attitude magazine photos. He, a dream bachelor, even received a few marriage proposals. To read more about this discussion, his roles in his current television projects, and hobbies, please read the Evening Standard, here.

18. Matt Lewis does a News Podcast, Radio Times starts #Neville4Newsnight

20. Matt Lewis’s New Film Coming Sooner than Expected

Matt Lewis (our beloved Neville Longbottom) will be featured in a new chick flick (romantic drama), Me Before You, based off the novel by Jojo Moyes. The film was expected to be released as a summer film, on June 3. However, Warber Bros. and MGM recently pushed up the release to a spring date, March 4.

Deadline, with an “insider” reported the move in date, saying:

Warner Bros./MGM romantic drama Me Before You based on the Jojo Moyes novel is leaving its June 3 summer release date and heading to March 4.  Insiders say the new release is a better time to hook women, particularly those off from college and high school on spring break. Me Before You is directed by Thea Sharrock from a screenplay that was penned by Moyes.

Me Before You tells the story of Lou (Clarke), a small town girl caught between dead-end jobs; and Will (Sam Claflin), a high-profile, successful man who becomes wheelchair bound following an accident. The two get off to a rocky start, but Lou becomes determined to prove to Will that life is worth living and as they embark on a series of adventures together. Doctor Who‘s Jenna Coleman and Clarke’s fellow Game of Thrones cast mate Charles Dance also star.

According to IMDB, Matt will be playing the role of “Patrick.” Patrick is the Lou’s small-town steady boyfriend before she goes and works for Will. His character is a personal trainer that is described as being “obsessed with with sports and diet.” Given how much news Matt Lewis’s body has been making recently, we think he’ll fit the role very well!

22. Matthew Lewis Surprises 200 kids on a Special Holidy

Matthew Lewis (who played the incredible Neville Longbottom) joined 200 children on their way to Universal for a special holiday. British Airway’s annual charity flight, Dreamflight, sends 200 hand-picked children with disabilities or illness on a special holiday. The children were accompanied by 100 doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and an unsuspecting special guest: “Neville!” BT reports:

More than 5,000 children from across the country have been involved in Dreamflight holidays since the first voyage in 1987. For many, it has been their first time abroad and also gives them a chance to have a holiday without their family.

They will visit a host of attractions, including SeaWorld, Disney World and Universal Studios.

The young passengers have been hand-picked to join the ten-day holiday by doctors and medical experts, having battled with serious illness, disability and trauma.

Lewis, 26, said: “I read about what Dreamflight was and how amazing it was going to be for these kids that I jumped at the chance to be here. It’s been the most amazing day, it’s been a pleasure.

“All these kids have been looking forward to this for a really long time. It just takes me back to when I was a kid and went over to Orlando and saw some amazing things.

“Some of these kids are so buzzing, and it just warms your heart so much to see their faces.”

Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) was quick to tweet about the new Risen trailer, saying that he was “Psyched for this, pal!” The two are currently tweeting back and forth about their weekend plans–throwing in Harry Potter references, of course, because the rivalry between Gryffindor and Slytherin is still very real.

J.K. Rowling has just joined the conversation–expressing the same pleasure at seeing our Harry Potter boys banter between their respective houses.

Screen Shot 2015-08-28 at 4.28.31 PM

Risen is a biblical story of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The story is told from the views of non-believers, attempting to find the body of Christ after it has risen, leading the worlds largest and most important man-hunt. IMDB shares Sony Pictures description of the movie:

“Follows the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius, a powerful Roman Military Tribune, and his aide Lucius, are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.”

24. Harry Potter stars come together to support BBC

J.K. Rowling and Matthew Lewis are a part of a list of celebrities that have spoken out about their support for the BBC. The BBC is under threats of funding slashes and budget cuts. The news sources also faces political pressure to be “curbed,” or kept in check.

J.K. Rowling was one of many to sign a letter to the Prime Minister and the UK parliament, saying that changing the BBC would diminish it, and “a diminished BBC would simply mean a diminished Britain.” US News reports through the Associated Press:

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling and naturalist David Attenborough also signed Wednesday’s letter to Prime Minister David Cameron, calling the BBC “a creative force for good” and “the envy of the world.”

The BBC runs multiple commercial-free TV and radio stations and websites, funded largely through a 145 pound ($227) annual fee paid by TV-owning households.

It faces a cash squeeze after agreeing to pay for free TV licenses for people over 75, and the fee’s future is in doubt as more people watch programs on computers, tablets and phones.

The BBC also faces renegotiating the terms of its governing charter with what some consider a hostile government.

Some in Cameron’s Conservative Party think the BBC should focus on “public service” broadcasting and stop making big-budget entertainment shows such as singing contest “The Voice” and car program “Top Gear.”

The broadcaster is regularly accused of political bias — by both left and right — and is criticized by commercial rivals for its size and secure funding.

To read the full article, please visit US News.

Using her favorite social media venue, J.K. Rowling has continued her outspokenness through Twitter. She and Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) have tweeted and retweeted using the hashtag #BacktheBBC.

25. When Thunder Comes by J. Patrick Lewis

Today, my long-overdue revue of J. Patrick Lewis's marvelous collection, When Thunder Comes: Poems for Civil Rights Leaders, which is illustrated by five different artists: Jim Burke, R. Gregory Christie, Tonya Engel, John Parra, and Meilo So. (My apologies to the illustrators for not including them in the subject line as is my usual practice, but it got a bit unwieldy, I'm afraid.)

Pat Lewis has provided eighteen poems in this book: an introductory sonnet (using the Shakespearean format) that begins as follows:

The poor and dispossessed take up the drums
For civil rights--freedoms to think and speak,
Petition, pray, and vote. When thunder comes,
The civil righteous are finished being meek.

The seventeen people profiled in the book range from well-known civil rights activists such as Mohandas Gandhi, Coretta Scott King, and Nelson Mandela to lesser-known people, including Mitsuye Endo, who fought against Japanese internment in the United States during World War II, and Dennis James Banks, co-founder of the American Indian Movement, who fought for Native American rights in the U.S. Both the dead (e.g., Mamie Carthan Till, mother of young Emmett Till, and baseball players Josh Gibson and Jackie Robinson) and the living (e.g., Nobel Peace Prize winners Aung San Suu Kyi and Muhammad Yunus) are included.

Here is the two-page spread for "The Statesman", a poem about the long captivity of Nelson Mandela, now the former President of South Africa, illustrated by Jim Burke:

The poem is a sonnet, written using a Petrarchan scheme (ABBA CDDC EFFE GG):

The Statesman
by J. Patrick Lewis

It is as if he's landed on the moon
Five years before the actual event.
At Robben Island Prison, his descent
Into a nightmare world, an outcast dune,
Begins at forty-six. His fate derails.
There are no clocks, his life's defined by bell
And whistle, sisal mats (no beds), his cell
Is seven feet square. But destiny prevails.

He keeps for an eternity of years
His keepers, not the other way around,
Marked by a calm refinement so profound
As to alleviate his captors' fears.
He said, once they had turned the jailhouse key,
No man will rob me of my dignity.
One of my favorite poems in the book is the one about Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the state of California, back in the 1970s. Although the poem does not mention it, Milk was shot and killed while still in office. The spread is illustrated by Meilo So.

The Crusader
by J. Patrick Lewis

I knew my rights meant nothing.
I kept them out of sight.
Seen and heard when the sun went down,
hidden in harsh daylight.

Then Liberation called one day
and asked would I consent
to tell the world that I was proud
of being different.

I took the fight to the city fathers.
They scolded me for that:
We don’t approve of boys who wear
an unconventional hat.

So I became a city father
to break the laws that kept
boys and girls from living lives
that Life would not accept.

They say I came before my time
but who else would redress
unmitigated suffering due
to such small-mindedness?
This book is perfect for discussion during February, which is African American History Month, or March, which is Women's History Month, but truly, it's perfect for reading year-round, and a must-buy for middle school libraries everywhere (in my opinion, of course).

You can read a great interview with Pat about this book over at Chronicle Books's website. My thanks to Chronicle for sending me a review copy of this wonderful, wonderfully important work.
