To start off the evening, Blue Willow Bookshop’s owner and manager Valerie Koehler gave us the good news that the keynote speaker for the 2012 Tweens Read festival on October 20 will be Heather Brewer! The last time Heather was in Houston was for her launch of ELEVENTH GRADE BURNS. Watch the Tweens Read site for updates!
Macmillan publicist Allison Verost (@aecverost) was the moderator for the panel of five YA authors. The evening started off with each author introducing her book. I couldn’t write down all they said, but over the past two weeks, I’ve put up posts about each of these authors and the book she was presenting at this event, so I’ll list those here:
Jennifer Bosworth: STRUCK; Anna Banks: OF POSEIDON; Anne Aguirre: ENCLAVE; Leigh Bardugo: SHADOW AND BONE; Emmy Laybourne: MONUMENT 14.
Allison asked the authors to tell what they found most surprising about being a YA author and what they found most exciting. Emmy Laybourne’s response to most surprising: “You guys!” the time it takes between getting the contract for the book and the book hitting the shelves. Six months to two years? What’s wrong with it? Most exciting was that

I hope everyone enjoyed getting a peek at ONE DAY I WENT RAMBLING by Kelly Bennett and Terri Murphy. Now back to the Fierce Reads Tour, coming to Blue Willow Bookshop tomorrow night! Today’s spotlight is:
Ann Aguirre: Enclave
In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.
As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning. Read more…

Galen, a Syrena prince, searches land for a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. It’s while Emma is on vacation at the beach that she meets Galen. Although their connection is immediate and powerful, Galen’s not fully convinced that Emma’s the one he’s been looking for. That is, until a deadly encounter with a shark proves that Emma and her Gift may be the only thing that can save his kingdom. He needs her help–no matter what the risk.

The big YA event for June is the Fierce Reads Tour, which will be coming to Houston on June 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Blue Willow Bookshop. This tour from Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group features Jennifer Bosworth, Ann Aguirre, Anna Banks, Emmy Laybourne, and Leigh Bardugo. For those who may not be familiar with all of these authors and their books, I’m going to run a short spotlight post for each of them. Today’s spotlight is:
Jennifer Bosworth: STRUCK
Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.
Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.
Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn’t who he claims to be. In the end, the passion a
