WRITING FOR THE WEB
These days almost everyone’s first destination for reading is the web, but there is a boundless amount of content competing for eyeballs. Whether you’re trying to entertain, make a point, or just update the world on your life, capturing the attention of readers can be a challenge. With a focus on the short essay form, this class will help you develop skills to create concise, informative and compelling writing to send out into the digital world. Maximum enrollment is 15 students. No pre-registration requirement. Open to writers of all levels.

Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships

Five Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships in the amount of $25,800 each (previously $15,000), will be awarded to young poets through a national competition sponsored by the Poetry Foundation, publisher of Poetry magazine. Established in 1989 by the Indianapolis philanthropist Ruth Lilly, the fellowships are intended to encourage the further study and writing of poetry.

Submissions will be accepted from March 1 – April 30 of this year, via the online submissions system.

APPLICANT GUIDELINES:
Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and no older than 31 years of age as of April 30, 2014.
Applications must be submitted by April 30, 2014.
Applications must be made through our submissions website, according to the guidelines below.
Application materials sent via e-mail or standard mail will not be considered.

HOW TO APPLY:

FIRST, you must assemble your application materials as a SINGLE Word document. This document must include:
An approximately 250-word introduction to your work (not to exceed one page).
Ten pages of poems, in standard font and size (Times New Roman, 12pt). You may include multiple poems on one page, but total pages of poems must not exceed ten.
Publication list. (Optional. If you choose to include it, please do so as the last page of your document.)

About the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship Program
Established in 1989 by Ruth Lilly to encourage the further writing and study of poetry, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship program has dramatically expanded since its inception. Until 1995, university writing programs nationwide each nominated one student poet for a single fellowship; from 1996 until 2007, two fellowships were awarded. In 2008 the competition was opened to all U.S. poets between 21 and 31 years of age, and the number of fellowships increased to five, totaling $75,000. In 2014, the Poetry Foundation received a generous gift from the Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Fund to create the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowships, which increased the fellowship amount from $15,000 to $25,800.

Write At The Farm April 13 – 15, 2014

The Writers' House at Century Farm, a creative retreat in Washington's Skagit Valley is the perfect place to create--a unique farmhouse that has been in the Skagit Valley since the dawn of the 20th century. A hundred year old barn to inspire you, acres of bucolic green fields and colorful flowers to help clear away your writer's block and give you the mental space you need.

The 2014 spring retreat session at The Writers' House at Century Farm with Jennifer Basye Sander, NYT bestselling author, former Random House senior editor, and co-author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published, will be held Sunday–Tuesday, April 13–15th. This is your chance to write surrounded by fields of flowers during the world-famous Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

Arrive mid afternoon on Sunday to meet the other three writers and get settled in your private room. Spend the next few days in blissful creativity, working on your project, writing together with the other participants, consulting with Jennifer, enjoying home cooked meals and the free flowing wine while you discuss all manners of literary things far into the night. About the Write At The Farm Retreats --

After years of doing writers' retreat weekends at our house in Tahoe, I am bowing to requests to do something up at the family farm in Washington. Located in the heart of the Skagit Valley just down the road from the tulip headquarters, my great-grandfather's farm is midway between the towns of La Conner and Mt. Vernon, about an hour and a half north of Seattle. Easy to get to, and wonderful to settle into once you are there, relax and let the scenery and the history inspire you. All you have to do is be a writer for those few days, I take care of everything else. Meals, wine, and a private room with shared bathroom are included in the $395 price, and there are only four spots available. Four scholarships are being offered for first-time participants of the 21st Annual WINTER POETRY & PROSE GETAWAY, January 17-20, 2014 in the Atlantic City area. Recipients may choose from workshops in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoir and more, including special advanced sections with Stephen Dunn and Tony Hoagland. In addition, the conference also offers open mics, tutorials, talks, sunrise yoga, dancing at the Getaway Disco and writerly camaraderie.

There are two different categories of scholarships available:

+ The Toni Brown Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the Getaway faculty and staff, will offer places to two poets or writers age 31 and over. Deadline: Nov. 15, 2013.

+ The Jan-ai Scholarship will sponsor two poets or writers between the ages of 18 - 30. Deadline: Nov. 30, 2013.

Writer-in-Residence

In partnership with The Paris Review, the Standard, East Village is pleased to announce its first Writer-in-Residence.

For the first three weeks in January 2014, the Standard, East Village will provide a room free of charge to a writer who has a book under contract and needs three weeks of solitude in downtown New York City. Applications will be judged by the editors of The Paris Review and Standard Culture. All applications should be submitted electronically to:

Each application should include:

1) A description and sample of the work-in-progress, not exceeding fifty pages total.

2) A letter from the publisher confirming that the work is under contract.

3) A brief letter from the writer explaining how this residency would benefit his or her work-in-progress.

Writers may also submit samples of previous work. This is optional. Samples should not exceed fifty pages total.

The deadline for the application is November 1, 2013.

The residency is open to writers of prose or poetry, fiction or nonfiction. Continental breakfast (and unlimited coffee) will be provided daily free of charge; all additional incidental charges (room service, etc.) will be incurred by the guest. All rooms are nonsmoking. The Standard, East Village and The Paris Review will be pleased to hold a small reception in the writer’s honor at the conclusion of the stay. It is expected that the writer will stay alone, within reason.

Prime Number Magazine seeks smart, well-written book reviews that explore the author’s craft and examine where the work fits within current literary trends. We are not seeking reviews that accentuate the negative. Prime Number Magazine’s on-line quarterly seeks four 400-800 word reviews and one author interview of800-1,200 words per issue. Our print annual seeks one to two review essays,between 2,000 and 3,000 words, which critically examine two or more authors.Our review essays are peer-reviewed, so please send us only your best critical works. Our print annual may also include a longer author interview with a notable writer. Though our print interviews are often conducted by our Prime Number Magazine staff, if reviewers have an interview idea, please pitch us the idea.

First Novel Contest: Emerging Writers Getaway Contest of the Whidbey Writers MFA Alumni Association.

Grand prize: a seven-day retreat at a cabin in the North Carolina Smokies (valued at $2,000), plus a cash award of $300. Second and third place receive cash prizes.

Position Summary
· Manage the production of Quiddity's international literary journal (print and electronic components), radio program, and website, upholding all quality, calendar, and budgetary expectations; manage and advance the distribution of Quiddity's international literary journal and public-radio program through traditional and emerging venues

Essential Job Responsibilities
· Oversee the submission systems (electronic and traditional) and acquisition processes for the print journal reading series, and radio program, including the coordination of query and galley correspondence as well as reading series proposals and contests
· Coordinate and execute all editing and production schedules for the journal, radio, and website; coordinate the production schedule for the public-radio program; coordinate editorial board and staff meetings; support editorial board and staff through production processes
· Advance Quiddity's subscriber base, listener base, readership, and distribution using established and emerging resources
· Perform the layout for the journal's interior print pages and its electronic format(s), design covers and promotional materials, manage web design, and expand web content
· Supervise and mentor student interns and cultivate Quiddity's internship program, as well as other duties as assigned relative to academic affairs

Minimum Job Requirements
· MA, MFA, or MSc in Creative Writing, English, Communications, or related field
· At least one year of experience with a print publication or journal of national distribution
· Teaching experience with potential to supervise internships

Specific Skills
· Must possess savvy graphic design skills and be well versed in user-friendly, multimedia web development and social media
· Proficiency in web design software and CSS, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Audition (or similar software) Outlook, Excel, Access, File Transfer Protocol
· Exceptional reading, writing, and proofing skills
· Outstanding professional communication skills
· Established track-record of organizational management and follow-through
