We had an amazing time this past Saturday being ‘inventors!’ In this kids art class we learned about shape versus form while creating their own robot designs.
First the kids invented their robots, by creating 3 designs. I provided reference robo-parts for inspiration, and the kids came up with some very cool ideas!

We chose our favorite design and then painted a flat gray value over the robot’s shape. Since this was a 1 day workshop and not an ongoing class, we were unable to store our wet art. Luckily Mrs. Scribble had her trusty hair dryer! I dried the paintings while the students created a second artwork: designing a futuristic world for their robots to live in. They LOVED this part.
Next we added white shine, or reflected light ‘stripes’ onto our robots. I showed them how to draw the stripes always on the same side of their robot, on every robot body part. Then we added black stripes for the shadow side of the robot, on every robot part. Finally we added an outer shadow around the robots.

Value is always a challenge for young children, and even more so using paint. Generally I prefer using pastels or oil pastels when teaching value, as it is slightly more forgiving than paint. If I do this lesson again, I’ll paint a demonstration robot along with them. I also let the kids go a little wild adding color to their robots at the end, but I encourage creativity. Process is what counts, as kids learn by doing and I never want to stifle that.

It’s been about 4 months since I’d last posted anything on this ‘ere blog. With back to back deadlines and prepping for the arrival of our first newborn, the end of 2014 throughout the beginning of 2015 has been at the least to say chaotic and life changing..
If you follow me in any of my social media accounts you’ll notice an exorbitant amount of pictures {I apologize by the way..new mom syndrome you know..} of this little peapod,
Meet the new little addition to our growing family, Aria {yes we’re Game of Thrones fans} Rose. Born March 25th 2015 at 3:15 in the morning. It’s been a whole month since her arrival and aside from being sleep deprived, the late night feedings, milk vomits and spit ups, and her constant need to shriek at the top of her lungs..like ALL THE TIME…she hasn’t stopped putting a smile on our face since then.
she finds this all too amusing..
Now to top all that off I’m officially back to work! Hopefully the transition from old schedule to new schedule won’t be too bad
…who am I kidding!?..
..Ah well..wish me luck!
In the meantime here’s the artwork I did for Highlights this past month!
Happy Monday!
This makes for quite an interesting voyage!
Working on fun things this week. Starting with a fun little spread about a family of birds. I love that I get to flex some background work in this one..I always loved working on buildings and such.
More work talk of work to come.
Until then Happy Week!
Working on a quite a few things this month. Including this nautical themed illustration. And what started off at a day in the beach for these kids..
ended up a day in the backyard..
then a flight on a magical bath tub and a bird stealing their lunch..
I don’t know what sparks these ideas in my head..they just demand to be created sometimes. hehe. Can’t wait to see them finished though.
Until next time!
HAPPY TUESSY KIDS!
Thanks Anne-Marie for a most amazing and beautiful banner! Love this so much! Thanks all of you who've contributed to the banner--we've had some outstanding illustrating!

Today I was working on the first 2 page spread for our book. I've already worked up a very rough sketch indicating placement and proportion, and Kimberlee shared what she was envisioning. The first sketches are always rough because there will be changes and unforeseen developments. No need to waste time and effort on tight detailed drawings at this stage. The sketch at left is on tracing paper that allows for quick erasing and placement of elements before starting the actual painting. I quickly traced over sketches in my sketchbook, placing them in the template sized 8 x 11 inches per page and adapting size and proportion. We decided to add a loose border treatment of slender vines or branches and drape the art along the lower portion of both pages. I like to keep some butterfly wings, my sketches and reference materials near by.
I work with layers and scraps of of tracing paper, making small changes then attaching them right over the rough draft. Not having to erase or redraw something speeds up production time and helps my ideas formulate without breaking the flow. At top right you can see some of my botanical references, sketch pad and multiple layers of sketched ideas.
Yay. I just finished the final illustration for the Art Blocks for Ghana project. I decided to make a few minor changes to the final, for example the clouds don’t looks as cartoony as I initially planned them to be when I created the color comp. I wish the background were a lot smoother than it is though…but I’ve already changed it twice and I’m scared the third time would just make the whole thing look too muddy.
As you can see I was taking shots of the progress for you but unfortunately my camera ran out of battery during the process so I couldn’t document all of it…boo.
“Fly Home” Acrylic on 8×8″ wood panel.
I wanted to have fun with this one so I chose to do it in a really playful style. I also chose really bright and fun colors because that’s the first thing that pops into my head when I think of Ghana or Africa in general for that matter.
I hope this little guy finds a really awesome home to live in! I hope you guys participate in the auction this coming March 2011.
Let’s help build a fantastic children’s home for the kids in Ghana! YAY!!!

The weather in New York these days has been quite moody (like me …hehe…no seriously)…But sooner or later, there’s a gonna be plenty of days where I get to find one of these stuck in my hair, sliming around our backyard, and fluttering in my room (if I’m lucky!)..I’m hoping to see more flutter than anything else though..
Quick one for the week. No video for this one but I wish I had! The tree and texture adds were a lot of fun to do. Boo… Maybe next week.
Happy Tuesday!
