1. Tied up 'a'

2.5 x 3.5
Derwent Coloursoft on board
ebay

I like this! This is Coloursoft's "brown black" color. Its almost as soft as the Derwent Drawing pencil, but noooooot quiiiiite. Close though.
They're still not Polychromos, but they're pretty good.
And I like this color. I want to do a couple more then do a final "side by side" thing to compare.

I sure wish I had my CPSA lightfast book so I'd know which ones were lightfast. If anyone who does know wants to tell me, I'm all ears (thanks to Katherine I already know the Poly black is good, which is a relief). I have a feeling most or all of these muted colors will be OK. Notice though I'm not testing Graphitints because somewhere I heard they were fugitive. Again, if anyone knows for sure and feels like sharing...

2. Yarn Pear

SOLD

2.5 x 3.5
Polychromo pencil on board

I'm back to my Polychromos! That last one, the Cretacolor, just irked me enough that I had to go back to my faves. You know how when you go on vacation and sleep in hotels and try all new things, then you come home and sleep in your own bed and go "Ahhhhhhh"...well that's how my Polychromos feel to me.

I did this with just the Dark Sepia one.
You can hardly tell that's a pear underneath all that yarn, but yep, its there.

So check this out: (click it to make it bigger)

Look at how greenish the Polychromo sepia looks compared to the others!
My favorite "non black" here is the Chocolate Derwent Drawing pencil, by far.
I do like the Cretacolor Dark Sepia COLOR, but hate working with the pencil.
My favorite pencils to work with are still the Polychromos, but I can deal with the Derwent.

There's one more I want to try before the jury is all in. I need to do some Coloursofts and see what I can do with those, then I'll make my decision.

3. Yarn #26 - Post-storm sky

2.5 x 3.5
Coloursofts and Polychromos on board
on ebay

I know I said I was going to do black and whites. And I am! I just had to do this first.

Yesterday was such a contrast to the day before, with the terrible storm and wind and rain and all. The sky was blue, and there were these amazing gigantic fluffy clouds all over. They were still kind of ominous, with grey underbellies, but they also had the most beautiful pinks and lavender colors in them. I just had to do a little piece about them. Or try, anyway.

I don't do as well with pastelly colors for some reason. It probably looks OK to you, but I fussed with it a lot. I'm not a pastel person. I like grey and taupe and black and cream and olive and plum and...well, you get the idea. Even as a kid. (Although I was forced to have a pink bedroom. Well, at least until I got up the nerve to ask my parents to let me paint one wall blue-violet (the rest was white) which they thought was the height of teenage rebellion, and which they also thought gave them lots of "cool" points for allowing me to do. Enough said.)

Anyway, this is my little homage to the "post-storm sky".
And I find that the Polychromos work well with just about every other type of pencil. I like to start with the Coloursofts or Graphitints and then do some Polychromo on top.

4. "What's it all about, Alfie?" yarn

Graphitints AND Coloursofts on illustration board
on ebay

I was having one of those days.
A friend of the family died a couple of days ago, and it got me thinking about life and death and all that good stuff, hence the title. Sometimes it all just seems surreal, doesn't it? Like, what are we doing here, anyway? And what's it all mean?

Plus, its raining raining, this endless gloomy heavy rain and grey sky.

I dunno, this is just what came out today. I actually thought "I feel like doing a yarn piece", and got out my Graphitints and Coloursofts and tried using them together.
I started with brown Coloursoft, then did a Grey Graphitint over the whole thing, then added color, then toned it back down, then did white over it all, then I kind of lost track.

It was very therapeutic though, and I kinda like the result. I managed to get some kind of deep jewel tones, which isn't what I was going for, but that's OK, I like deep jewel tones.

~~~~~~~
I'm working on a COOL private commission, wish I could share. Maybe I can, I'll ask. Maybe not though, which I will understand. Its not yarn! ha ha Kind of a children's book thing. Fun fun fun.
~~~~~~
Remember the doll house I gave my mom for Christmas? Well, she loves that thing to death. Today we went online (well, I went online and she sat in a chair and watched) and we found some doll house sites and she ordered...get this...toilet paper. TOILET PAPER. Little teeny tiny rolls of Scott toilet tissue. And a newspaper and a grandfather clock.

~~~~~~~
And now I will leave you with this.
Cher is singing. Yes, that Cher.
Burt Bacharach and Hal David did the music.
Remember when Michael Caine looked like this?
5. I'm obsessed
Coloursofts AGAIN
on ebay
Can't...stop...drawing...yarn...
I tested the red, and I like it. Cranberry is a good color as well.
The pinks are a little "fleshy" in my opinion.
I did this one, scanned it, decided it needed something, fiddled with it, scanned it again, fiddled with it some more, scanned it again and yep, fiddled with it one more time. I ended up burnishing it a bit with white, then added more color again.
I notice that when I do actual knitting, like this one, I end up burnishing. For some reason the grainy look I do with the yarn doesn't work as well with the actual knitting. Hmmm...
Thanks to my friends on ScribbleTalk, I found this great site today ~ ArtRenewal.org
And because for some reason I decided I needed a "why do I bother?" moment, I looked at some of Gary Kelley's work.
I could cry.
I remember when I was a student at the Academy, for some reason we had a piece of his hanging in the display case for a while. It was an illustration of Stevie Ray Vaughn. I think it was when Gary was just starting to hit it BIG, and I that piece went on to win an award somewhere.
I have my travel mug from Barnes and Noble with his mural of the famous writers as a constant reminder of how brilliant some people are, and how...not so brilliant...some of the rest of us are.
Signed,
Debbie Downer
6. 3 Hearts
Derwent Coloursofts on board
on ebay
Well guess what inspired this one? There's a holiday approaching, and I figured doing hearts would get me out of my "grey on grey on other muted colors" rut.
I'm still exploring the color range of the Coloursofts. I have the tin of 72 colors, and used all the pinks and Scarlet on this. I have to say, I'm loving these pencils!
I will make this image into cards and notecards, and try to do them in the next couple of days. I think I'll also do a couple more Valentine themed ones.
It was nice to take a break from these for a few days, it kind of re-charged my batteries.
7. Today's yarn offering
Coloursofts again! On illustration board.
on ebay
Well, I'm really loving these pencils. I wanted to try a new palette today. I'm getting very tired of grey. It was very foggy this morning, which made me nostalgic for San Francisco. But still, I didn't pick up the grey pencils.
This is the most colorful one I've done so far, and it also has the darkest background.
There's a slight impressed line running down the left side, which is barely noticeable. When I was drawing out the lines to cut the board into ACEO sized pieces, I goofed, and had to redraw and cut, then erase the line off. It left a little groove in the board. And for whatever reason I decided to use the piece anyway and work with it. I figured nothing in life is absolutely perfect anyway, and thought it might give the piece a little character. I could have turned the piece over and used the other side I guess, but this side's tooth seemed just a wee bit nicer. Funny, the decisions we make.
I want to say thank you to everyone who's sent me private emails about these pieces. I'm really touched. It makes me very happy to know that they're resonating with people for different reasons.
I will continue to do them, but maybe not every single day. I'd like to branch out into some different 'yarn' and 'knitting' themed pieces. I will still do these though because they're fun little exercises and give me a chance to explore some new ideas and media.
