We knew Marvel had to thin out their line for Secret Wars, the huge upcoming event from Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, but the degree that the new tie-in miniseries and other books have been paused or moved of the way is slightly maddening. ComicBook.com broke the news yesterday of which books the publisher is cancelling or putting on hold during the Secret Wars. Marvel’s SVP of Sales & Marketing David Gabriel broke the news.
That’s 33 comics on hold for Secret Wars.
In addition, those Secret Wars banners may have been more important than we initially thought, as the books branded as having their Last Days are the ones that are coming to an end. “LAST DAYS titles are creators bringing their stories to their natural conclusions before the destruction of the Marvel Universe.” Then there’s Warzones – which is the stuff that the post-Secret Wars Marvel Universe is made of. “All of which are laying foundations for a new Marvel Universe.” The Battleworld books are the tie-ins, that’s why we have seen so many of those titles announced from the past couple of days.
“For example, during Secret Wars Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows is the “core” Spider-Man series. That should be pretty obvious considering Dan Slott is writing it.” During the event we are supposed to see the main titles as the Battleworld tie-ins (is that obvious though?)
Finally, Gabriel talked some numbers. “We’re going to surpass a half a million units on the first issue which is amazing. And that’s just selling straight to our Direct Market core retailers.”

Starting in June 2012, Marvel Comics will bundle print copies of “all Marvel super hero comics priced at $3.99” with special codes so the comic book buyer can download a free digital copy of the same comic.
Do you think the book publishing industry could follow this bold experiment that will include major comics like Wolverine, Avengers, Spider-Man and X-Men?
Marvel Entertainment SVP of sales David Gabriel explained: “We’ve seen a tremendous response to the digital codes in Avenging Spider-Man, our Season One graphic novels and the Ultimate Comics line. The positive reactions from both retailers and fans make it clear that including these codes with our books drives customers into comic stores on a repeated basis.” (Via The Verge)

Remember when an event book like the original Secret Wars was simply 12 issues with a few tie-ins within their normal titles? ;)
Marvel is really terrible at their print subscription service. You can still start a sub (i.e. pay for 12 issues in advance) on almost all of the cancelled books, and they are the worst at communicating to customers what is going to happen to pre-paid issues of titles that end abruptly.
I understand that they can’t/won’t announce which titles are restarting at the end of Secret Wars just to keep subscribers (presumably a small fraction of their reader base) informed, but it still stinks from a customer’s perspective.
Oh come on Man, why so complicated!? …… Miss the old days, no million tie-ins no stupid variants ….
When I first heard about the ‘Secret Wars’ I was pretty excited but every day that goes by I am becoming less and less so. Can Marvel make this “event” any more bloated with all of these various “Battleworld” titles? (and don’t get me started on the ridiculous amount of variants… Marvel just does not know when to stop)
Also, with all of these “core” titles either cancelled or on hiatus, I just don’t see myself replacing them with the associated “Battleworld”/”Warzones” titles. So far way too many of these titles sound very underwhelming and not sure why I need to relive these old Marvel “events” (many of which I didn’t care for in the fist place).
On hold doesn’t mean that the title will not be cancelled: I can’t see why Storm or Cyclops would countinue when Magneto will end.

Elektra was amongst the titles listed, even though it has already been cancelled. Perhaps there will be more to come.
Were not sure if these books are cancelled or not, they could be rebooted, they could return with original numbering. Crazier things have happened.
Oh, I’m SURE Marvel is actually cancelling Ms. Marvel, one of their best, most popular, and best-selling comics, when the likes of Nova is just going “on-hiatus” (rolls eyes).
we’re the fans really clamoring for this.? we’re the fans asking for a big, bloated, convoluted, complicated cross-over event at spans the entire line of books, putting books on hold, canceling others, rebooting others, and leaving others with their status quo intact (which ones are which, who knows)? so complicated is this mess that a marvel rep had to come out and inform the fans of which books are gonna be gone for a while, but will come back, which are gone for good, which books will relate to secret wars, which books will relate to the marvel universe after secret wars, which books are the core books during secret wars,which are not, etc., etc. , etc.. if other folks wanna swim through all this muck and mire, more power to them, i think i’ve reached my breaking point. i will collect the main secret war series just to see where the company is headed, but all of these battleworld and warzone books are just so much filler that may or may not be relavent in the marvel universe after the dust clears from this mess, so why bother. then i guess we’ll all see how much of a reboot the result of this event will be. so many rumours flying around, but if you take what the marvel rep in the comicbook.com article said as truth, it looks like it’s gonna be pretty significant. if that’s the case, i think i’m pretty much done with marvel, but again, we’ll see.
I was an avid Marvel reader up until about the early nineties. I am utterly flummoxed by all these announcements. The X-Men from a 92 cartoon is a part of this? And also the X-Men from the eighties with a young Kitty Pride? And the Avengers from the 70s fighting Korvac? Hulkworld? Age of X-tinction? Is this a greatest hits compilation? Who? What? Where? Why?
How any writer manages to tell a story in the middle of all this is beyond me.

@allen – I’m pretty sure the guy in the back is sentry, who joined the “new” avengers sometime after “avengers disassemble”. what I’m not sure about is what the piece above is supposed to represent. is that the cover for the avengers comic on free comic book day? is the above piece supposed to show some of what the marvel universe is gonna look like once secret wars ends? if so, the marvel universe is looking pretty much “616 status quo”, with wolverine coming back from the dead, only to join the avengers once again. wonder if they’ll use him in the x-men. wonder if there will even be any x-men in the new continuity.
interesting point you bring up with the “greatest hits compilation”. I wonder, since all of these storylines happen in the “616” marvel universe, is marvel trotting out all these “hits” one last time for everyone to enjoy, because when the new continuity takes over, they’ll never mention any of them ever again? again, who knows? what a mess.
Wolverine won’t be an Uncanny Xman after battleworld. Department X will utilize some of the crystals it found on the moon to give a man regenerative powers as they graft adamantium to his bones. Professor Iavier will then come looking for him after his first terrigen misted students are kidnapped by the first Inhuman, Krakoa, the living island.
