1. Release of Beauty’s Kingdom by A.N. Roquelaure (Anne Rice)

Long before the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon, Anne Rice was writing a raunchy series of erotic novels in the 1980s under the pseudonym A.N. Roquelaure. The Sleeping Beauty series contained the following three novels: The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, Beauty’s Punishment and Beauty’s Release. The trilogy has been very successful for Anne Rice, and in the 1990s, […]

2. Elance Reports Rise in Erotica Writing

50 Shades of Grey has influenced the self-published writing crowd, as erotica titles populate the self-published bestsellers list every week. The erotica writing phenomenon is also on the rise among freelance writers.

Elance-Odesk.com, a site that connects writers with freelance jobs, has seen an increase in erotica writing projects online. In fact, the site saw a 39 percent increase in money spent hiring for erotica writing between Q4 2013 and Q4 2014.

In addition, the company reports that erotica writing has grown at double the rate of its general writing assignments. Interestingly, the site saw erotica writing spend peak in July 2014, the same month the 50 Shades movie trailer was released.

4. Review: REAL by Katy Evans

Real

May Contain Spoilers

From Amazon:

A fallen boxer.

A woman with a broken dream.

A competition…

He even makes me forget my name. One night was all it took, and I forgot everything and anything except the sexy fighter in the ring who sets my mind ablaze and my body on fire with wanting…
Remington Tate is the strongest, most confusing man I’ve ever met in my life.

He’s the star of the dangerous underground fighting circuit, and I’m drawn to him as I’ve never been drawn to anything in my life. I forget who I am, what I want, with just one look from him. When he’s near, I need to remind myself that I am strong–but he is stronger. And now it’s my job to keep his body working like a perfect machine, his taut muscles primed and ready to break the bones of his next opponents . . .
But the one he’s most threatening to, now, is me.

I want him. I want him without fear. Without reservations.

If only I knew for sure what it is that he wants from me?

Review:

I received a review copy of REAL, and I thought I’d read it because the hero is a former boxer turned underground fighter.  There aren’t a lot of romances that I am aware of featuring fighters, so I thought it would be a nice change of pace from the usual billionaires or cowboys I am forever reading about (because I can’t resist the cowboys, especially if they are sexy billionaire cowboys with really nice horses).  Though Remy is a rough underground fighter, he is a very wealthy one, which made me wonder why he would put his pretty face in jeopardy, but whatever.

Brooke is a down on her luck rehab therapist.  She just finished school, has bills to pay, and she hasn’t found the job of her dreams yet. When her BFF Mel drags her to a fight, she is consumed with thoughts of Remy after sharing a soulful, scorching stare.  Her insides clench (more on that later), her interest is beyond piqued, and sexy Remy is wedged in her brain.  When he offers her a job, instead of the wild one night stand she’s expecting, she reluctantly accepts.  How is she going to massage those wicked muscles, and keep their relationship professional?  When her younger sister gets into deep, deep doodoo, staying out of Remy’s bed is the last thing on her mind.

I have mixed feelings about REAL.  On one hand, it is an engaging, totally in your face read.  On the other, the prose, while immediate and intense and oh so honest, occasionally Drove. Me. NUTS.  Brooke’s insides clench.  About a billion times.  There is also a lot of licking, biting, gripping, and squeezing.  So much that I was tempted to go back to the beginning and count how many times these words appeared throughout the pages.  Brooke’s relentless pursuit of a physical relationship with Remy consisted of her stomach and other organs clenching, squeezing, and dripping a distracting number of times, and it got so repetitive after a while.   While her obsession with Remy was telegraphed loud and clear and left no doubt how she felt, I was soon wishing for more verbs to describe her body’s reaction to him.

I’m not sure that I liked Brooke, or that she’s the girl for the noble, damaged Remy.  She spent most of her life training for the Olympics, but an injury sidelined her.  Permanently.  During those years that she was training  to be the best, she lived a very sheltered life.  She worked hard, studied hard, and competed hard, all the while staying out of trouble.  She didn’t need the distraction.  Now that her dreams left her cruelly disappointed, she wants to start making up for lost time.  Remy is gorgeous, and sweet, and there is a chemistry between them that threatens to combust every time they see each other.  When Brooke decides that she’s going to act on her attraction, she is bewildered.  Remy refuses to sleep with her, and their make-out sessions go nowhere. Frustrated and resentful, she doesn’t know whether he’s the problem – or if she is.  Despite his assurances that he wants her to get to know him better first, she is so angry with him she doesn’t know how to react.  I was willing to cut her some slack because she hadn’t previously known anyone like Remy, or felt as twisted and confused as he made her feel.  When her younger sister is sprinkled into the mix, Brooke makes some really bad decisions, and Remy is the one to pay the price every time.

Remy is a character that I haven’t read about before, and I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil anything.  I wasn’t happy with message delivered here, though.  He refused for his condition, so he is always skating on a fine line between keeping control over himself and his actions and completely losing his sh$t.  He’s afraid of getting involved with Brooke, fearful that she will leave him when he loses himself.  That aspect of their relationship was fascinating.  How do you give your heart to a guy whose self-control is tenuous at best, and who forgets everything that he does during these episodes?  His condition ensures that he can’t really have a HEA, because Brooke can’t cure him.  It’s not realistic or possible, and that made the last half of the book even more compelling.

The final fight scene – Oh. My. God.  So intense.  It really made the book for me because is was brutal and gritty and showed what Remy was all about.  He is iron-willed and stubborn, and it’s impossible for him to back down from a challenge.

I enjoyed REAL, even though it didn’t completely work for me.  It felt genuine  and fresh, though some narrative quirks left me cringing and distracted. I am curious to see how Brooke and Remy’s relationship progresses, because I think they have a rocky road ahead of them.

Grade:   B-/C+

5. Book Recommendations

I know I've been really lax in posting or blogging, but I have been reading up a storm and I can't seem to stop. I mean to the point where I barely leave the house and my ereader is constantly in my hands. Thankfully I can stop for minutes at a time to clean up around the house and delegate chores to the kiddies.

We did have one major problem here a few weeks ago involving my dog. She developed a pretty nasty skin infection on her back and I had to rush her to the vet. My poor dog was so miserable, I just didn't know what to do. Vet thinks she might've gotten poison ivy and with the bacteria on her tongue just exacerbated the problem til she had a full out infection. With some antibiotics and antihistamine spray, she survived, but then last week she had a mild seizure that scared the hell out of us. Back to the vet where they did some blood work and everything came back fine.

So anyway, back to my original reason for finally posting! Like I mentioned I wanted to recommend some books for my readers that I think they'll enjoy. Not all of these are young adult titles, but they could be crossover hits.

The number one book I recommend is COLLISION COURSE by S.C. Stephens. She is fast becoming one of my favorite indie authors. I've already talked about her other mature young adult series THOUGHTLESS & EFFORTLESS. CC is the third book by her that I read. This book just took my breath away and made me cry at times. I'm such a sap when it comes to well-written heartfelt books. This one has so much heart it's  crazy.

The second one I recommend is PUSHING THE LIMITS by Katie McGarry. What a brilliant book. Another one that made me cry. I love stories that push that envelope and make me realize that there are people out there who may come across as bad ass, but are really just seriously damaged and need help. When two of those people find each other, it becomes an explosive love story that just pulls you in.

Another one I highly recommend is by another indie author, Georgia Cates, GOING UNDER. Similar in themes to PUSHING THE LIMITS, with a different outcome. I found myself completely enjoying this book and enjoying Georgia Cates' writing. She has a lot of talent.

I finally finished the PERFECT CHEMISTRY books by Simone Elkeles. I read the first one probably two or three years ago and just never got around to the last two. Even though I got to meet the model for the first book at BEA and Simone, I just never picked up the books. Silly me. I was crazy! I think out of all three of the books, Carlos' story was my favorite. Luis was a close second.

FLAT-OUT LOVE by Jessica Park is another great story that I totally enjoyed. And not because it takes place in Boston and the opening scene is in my hometown! Jamaica Plain never gets any love in books! This story crushes the heart, but then it fills it up with so much love that you finish the book completely breathless. Julie, Celeste and Matty and even Finn are amazing characters that will have you begging for more. While sighing through tears.

SLAMMED AND POINT OF RETREAT by Colleen Hoover has just been picked up by Simon & Schuster and I'm so glad that good things are happening to Colleen. This story has everything. Love, poetry slams, teachers, high school, love and death. Layken and Will are amazing characters whose love is totally not acceptable. Even though Will is 21 and Lake is 18. There are unforeseen circumstances that pull them apart and one very serious reason that keeps them together. The sequel wraps up everything in a nice package.

The next two books I recommend is more for the older crowd. SEDUCING CINDERELLA and THE SIREN. Two very different books, but both are extremely well-written. I find myself liking books where the male character is a sports person. There's just something so alpha male about sports figures. SEDUCING CINDERELLA is about a UFC fighter who is undergoing rehab for a shoulder injury and it turns out that the rehab therapist is his best friend's younger sister. She's lusting after the orthopedic surgeon who doesn't even look in her direction. So when Reid offers to help Lucie get her doctor, things happen between these two that they never expected to fall for each other. It's a great take on MY FAIR LADY and CINDERELLA.

THE SIREN is a literate version of erotica I guess. Basically Nora is a writer of erotic books and is looking to have her books mainstreamed by a well-known publishing house. Because she is a good writer and the house wants her, they give her MS to the prickiest asshole who could get a damn good story out of her. Her editor is a hard-ass from London who is called the London Fog. But see Nora also has a secret. She is a dominatrix at a club that was all but created for her. Zach offers to help Nora rewrite her book in six weeks, and then he may sign her contract. This book has everything. It's literate, it's sexy and it's well written it makes 50 Shades look like drivel (which it totally is!).  Nora's secret and her housemate (the absolutely lovely and virginal Wes) threaten to ruin everything she could have with the publishing house. Plus with Zach's marital issues, everything can be blown wide apart. Which knowing Nora, is exactly how she likes it.

Of course I also recommend KA Linde's AVOIDING COMMITMENT. This book hit such a nerve with me that at times I had to put the book down because it cut close to home. I had a tempestuous relationship from 18-28 with the same person one that nearly destroyed me and I knew how intricate a devastating relationship like that is. If you've never had a relationship like that, you might find the story a bit annoying, but it happens. All to much.

I hope all of you enjoy my recommendations and I hope to write some reviews soon. I also have some books to mail out. I haven't been to the post office. I also have a book I've been sitting on for a few weeks to give away. I'll try to get that posted soon.

Listen, I love comments and people who just stop by to say hello. So if you want, why don't you recommend a book to me that I haven't read. you can always check my goodreads page to see what I have read and what I haven't. I don't care if its YA, Mature YA, New Adult, Erotica (well-written please!), etc... I've still read a bunch of crap too. I know that I have to get through the crap to find the diamonds in the rough.

Review:

What I Didn't Like
  • The ending felt rushed. It was a happy ending and there was closure...it just felt rushed.
  • It had a Cinderella premise, but was kind of predictable. Typical rich man meets and falls for poor girl...not much to set it apart.
  • The fact that Jaye was kind of quick to leave with a guy sh

7. Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-Creator Joe Shuster

spread01

The Shuster Awards for Canadian comics were announced today, which were named after Canadian comic book artist, and Superman co-creator Joe Shuster. Shuster’s history just got a little more exciting with the release of Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman’s Co-Creator Joe Shuster.

The latest book from Craig Yoe (who brought us the similarly naughty Clean Cartoonists’ Dirty Drawings) delves into the erotic artwork of Joe Shuster created when the artist was down on his luck trying to reclaim the copyright for Superman. Yoe sez:

A while back, I found a cheaply printed, vintage porno booklet in a dusty cardboard box at a rare book sale, and exclaimed to myself , “Oh, my God, Joe Shuster!” And that was just the beginning of surprises. I sold the idea to Charlie Kochman at Abrams of doing a book about the art of this incredibly rare series. I eventually tracked down the complete run at much effort and cost—16 books and more! After I got my contract, I found out a WHOLE lot more—the gripping behind-the-scenes story connected with mobsters, showgirls, the anti-comics crusader Dr. Fredric Wertham, neo-Nazi Jewish juvenile delinquents, Senate investigations, Supreme Court banning, cops on the take, flogging of young teenage girls and…MURDERS!

Holy Comics Code Authority, Batman! They certainly didn’t show this stuff in Shuster’s Heritage Minutes.

The book’s website has a slideshow of imagery and pages from the book. As does Yoe’s blog, including the brilliantly sneaky design of the book’s dustjacket flaps.

8. Writing Sex

I received a question recently that I think is more for authors than it is for me. However, I’m going to attempt to answer anyway and then open up the boards to you, because I think in many cases the best answers to the questions I receive can be found in the comments section and not in the response I give.

How do your authors whose work is more bluntly physical in its descriptions of intimate interaction handle people's inevitable tendency to assume the prose is recollected experience? Is it safer to become pseudonymous than have your friends and relatives start greeting you with "knowing smiles" and a cringeworthy nudge-nudge-wink-wink?

I assume you’re talking about the erotic romance authors I represent more than anything else. What’s interesting though is that a lot of my authors use pseudonyms and for a lot of very different reasons. However, it’s never dawned on me that some would use a pseudonym for fear that others might assume they write the sex scenes from experience. Now that you say that though, I think I admire a lot of my clients a whole heck of a lot more than I did before [wink]. Yes, I would imagine there are a lot of people out there who think my erotic romance authors, and many of my other authors, for that matter, have pretty adventurous lives. However, why would one assume that because you write about sex you’ve experienced it? Do you assume that a mystery author has discovered a dead body or that a fantasy author has traveled to another dimension?

I think the answer to your question, though, has to come from within. It seems to me that you might be uncomfortable with the sex in your book or the sex you’re writing, and if that’s the case then I have to ask whether you should be writing it at all. Even if you write under a pseudonym the goal is to be successful, which means that at some point people are going to connect you with that name. However, if you determine that what you are writing is in fact right for you and yet you are still uncomfortable with using your given name, then by all means use a pseudonym.

But let’s open this up to readers and authors. How do you handle this sort of reaction from readers?

10. Are You Too Explicit

I received a question from a writer of women’s fiction asking if she needed to tell agents up front, in the query, that she has a few explicit sex scenes in her book. She had a couple of concerns: one was what was the line between “hot” and “explicit,” and the other was that her readers/critique partners said she needed to be up front about this.

I don’t think so. I don’t think you need to tell readers in your query letter or cover copy that your book might have explicit sex, violence, or anything else. Unlike movies, books aren’t yet rated (although give it time), and do you really want an agent judging your book by what might be rather than what it is? Like readers, agents have different tolerances for different things. I represent erotic romance, so clearly my tolerance and what I might deem “hot” versus “explicit” is probably very different from the agent who not only doesn’t represent erotic romance, but focuses her list primarily to the Christian market.

I don’t think you should ever feel that you need to warn readers (whether they are book buyers, agents, or editors) about your book. Let the book speak for itself. Write a strong query that entices, intrigues, and grabs our attention and then let us judge the book on its merits, not on our own fears or preconceived notions.

But I’m curious how readers feel about this. Have you ever picked up a book only to become upset because it was too explicit for your tastes? Did you wish you had been warned? And if you had, then do you support a rating system for books much like the movies?

11. Blue Rose Girls Panel Discussion

Some of you may remember a previous Wild Rose Reader post, PAS North Shore Council: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner???. Well, last Wednesday evening, the fabulous Blue Rose Girls participated in a panel discussion at the fall dinner meeting of the PAS North Shore Council. Our council had never hosted a panel discussion before…and I have to admit that I wasn’t sure how it would go over with our members and other attendees. I shouldn’t have worried. The panel discussion was a resounding success—one of the best events we’ve ever had! That’s really saying something because our council has had some mighty awesome speakers in the past: Jack Gantos, Lois Lowry, Natalie Babbitt, Joseph Bruchac, Mary Ann Hoberman, Wendell Minor, Robert San Souci, Kathryn Lasky, Anita Lobel, Natalie-Kinsey Warnock, Andrew Clements. I could go on and on and on.
Grace Lin, Anna Alter, Libby Koponen, Meghan McCarthy, and Linda Wingerter all sat on the panel. I served as moderator. The “girls” told the audience how they met each other; how they got started in publishing children’s books; why they formed the Blue Rose Girls; how they help, support, and advise each other about their creative processes and works-in-progress; and about books and projects that they are currently working on. Of course the name of fellow Blue Rose Girl Alvina Ling came up in the conversation a number of times.
The panel discussion was over much too soon! Lucy Pikul, our council treasurer, told me she had only one complaint: “It wasn’t long enough!”
Which panelist is missing from this picture?
On Friday, my friend Pat Purdy, owner of the Banbury Cross Children’s Book Shop, left a message on my answering machine. She told me that two reading teachers had been in her shop absolutely raving about the panel discussion. This positive response has me wondering if I should arrange for more panel discussions for our council dinner meetings.
Now you see the missing BRG: Meghan McCarthy
For me, last Wednesday was a special—and an especially enjoyable—evening. Having my friends speaking and sharing their experiences with a group of teachers and school librarians with whom I have been affiliated for many years was a memorable occasion. It was also great to have my daughter Sara and her good friend Elaine there with me.
