1. My interview with Graphic Design Blog UK

Hey, guess what? This is pretty cool news: I was just interviewed by Tara Roskell, a UK-based graphic designer and blogger extraordinaire. So happy to have been given the opportunity to give her an in-depth interview on my personal experiences in the field of art licensing. I hope you enjoy. Read it here.

Tara's got some really nice information on her blog. Be sure to check out all the categories... there is lots of good nuggets of info in there... or you can bookmark it for later!

2. New original paintings - TATTOOS

I have recently created a small collection of brand new paintings. The style of the art is not what you typically see from me! Once in awhile I like to re-energize by working in a style which is not my day-to-day. These works are the final products of my latest creative excursion. The subject I tackle in the series is TATTOOS, and the people who have them. Tattoos have always been mysterious, fascinating, and endlessly interesting to me—the tattoos themselves, the reasons people get them, and what the marks personally mean to them. Then of course there’s the fact that tattoos are actually living, breathing art in the literal sense.

The four acrylic-on-wood paintings in this group, "Angel", Henry", "Bird" and "Siren" will be released for sale in my Big Cartel shop at 9 PM EST on Thursday, November 11th.  I sure hope to see you there!

3. Illustration Friday: RACING

Illustration Friday: RACING, originally uploaded by kathy weller. Click on it to see it much bigger on Flickr.
Ta-da! Here is my entry for IF this week as well as the next step in the "City Scene" sketch which you chose for me to turn into a final illustration. I have to thank you all for voting for this piece -- it's really a lot of fun to work on, all the little details... the lettering... all of it. I just love doing this type of work.
(Want to vote in my latest poll? You still can.)

I planned to have this completed for you today, but I overestimated my superhuman powers. I've been way occupied with getting ready for next weekend. I'm headed to Quilt Market Houston (Yay!) so the studio is all aflurry with arty activity. But, once I start printing out some big prints, the fun is really going to start. Let's hope I have one extra cartridge in stock for each color my printer requires! (On second thought, I'd better check on that.. )

More info soon on my prep later in the week. I'll post some pics to show you a little of what I have cooking here... Sound good?

In the meantime, Halloween is upon us! I found a cool tutorial for Photoshopping some scary, vampirey blood onto a photograph of yourself (or someone else). Check it out here. And if you like that, also check out my little piece over on examiner.com about a page of creepy cool Photoshop tutorials I found on-line. (I also share my own attempt at the tutorial using myself as the subject.) Pull one of these out of your creative hat this week to impress (or gross out) your friends!

4. My 10-Minute Pet Portrait Needs YOU

(If the above video doesn't work, please click here.)

Here's the first time-lapse painting video I've ever made. I'd wanted to make one for a long time, before I finally did it. The final push at the time, was that my pet portrait days were numbered, and I wanted to do a video of a pet portrait creation before I stopped doing them.

If you have never seen this video, I really hope you'll give it a watch. I really love the finished portrait, AND, the process of making the video was exciting. (It was educational, too - editing is hard work!)

I am interested in gaining page views of this video because down the road, I think it would be cool to get enough views of all my painting videos to try to get a company sponsorship to make more. My fantasy is that my favorite paint company would sponsor me... Wouldn't that be great?? But, I can only pitch the idea if I have a LOT of page views and people who join my You Tube Channel. Can you help?

If you like the video, please rate it and leave a comment if you feel like it. And if you REALLY like it, please send the link to your friends so they can watch it, too... Thanks a lot!!

5. Pinky Booh with the fairy tale crew

Here's a page from the reader I did last spring called Pinky Booh (Rubicon/Oxford University Press, September 2009). It's a wonderful story with a truly unforgettable main character, if I do say so myself. :)

I've only shown a few pieces from the book here on my blog, but here is one that I've never shown before. Does it pique your interest in the story? Dont you wonder what all of the other fairy tale characters are doing waiting in line? Ha ha. Hope you enjoy.

8. My Poppets

Poppets on my mantle
(L-R: Me, Ruby, Matt, Daisy)

I have admired Claudine Hellmuth's work for several years now. Ever since I discovered her work and her wonderful "Poppet" artwork, I imagined how fun it would be to have my family "Poppet"-ized! Well, time comes and goes, and before I knew it, I'd never ordered those Poppets I'd promised myself. Well, this year in particular, I've learned through personal experience that it serves no one in the end to wait on things you want to do... or, for that matter, wait on things that perhaps you simply just want. So, partly in honor of this lesson, I went for it and ordered my Poppets a couple of weeks ago. Horray!! Well, they arrived TODAY, and I could not be happier!!! Thanks to Claudine for her wonderful work, and what a fun process, too. Truly painless, streamlined, and fun. Claudine, you make it a cake walk for us to have our very own custom Poppets! You have really streamlined the entire customer experience and made it easy and fun. The final product is so absolutely charming and whimsical, they bring a smile to my face (if not an outright chuckle) every time. Thank you!

11. Think of it as a "spa day" for your creative career

Here is a banner opportunity to gain a LOT of practical information on crafting your career as a professional artist, all in ONE DAY, and for one reasonable price.

There are seminars and workshops I've read about (and several I've attended) which cover the ins and outs of particular niche arts professions. But this looks to be the most well-rounded, ONE day-long seminar I've seen yet which tackles marketing yourself as a professional artist from so many broad angles. The only thing I've seen close to this in depth and breadth is the seminars available at Surtex Show and, to a larger extent, Licensing International. These shows each run for 3 - 5 days and the seminars and workshops they offer are about 1.5 hours each. But there are so many seminars and workshops over the course of 3-5 days, that you can pick and choose from many, many topics of interest.

I've taken many seminars at both of those shows and I've got my money's worth. But I can tell you that it cost *mucho dinero* to take the classes alone, never mind the travel and hotel expenses involved. This workshop costs only $200 (well, $195, officially) for one full day. You get to choose four seminars out of eight offered, which breaks down to $50 per seminar, which is a good price per seminar (for comparison's sake, Surtex seminars last 1.5 hours and are $75 each). Plus, there will be time to talk shop with others in a social atmosphere at the beginning and end of the day.

If you are in the Boston area (or will be September 13), and you are a working artist in need of some information, resources and a little guidance in a few key areas, OR you are a student about to fly the college coop, it's most definitely worth checking out. Great opportunity to gain a lot for not a lot of time or money!

I've attended workshops and seminars with Carol Eldridge and I can highly recommend her to anyone interested in learning about art licensing.

12. We are all "Party Animals" for A Place To Bark!

I recently took part in a truly wonderful art project. I, along with 20 other pet portrait artists, were invited to create and contribute works of art to be published in a uniquely themed art book.

It's called "Party Animals", and if you remember last years' benefit art book that I contributed to and blogged about ("Dogs Rule"), this one could be considered a "Part Two" of sorts. Jill Beninato of Sit Stay Smile is the responsible "party" for "Party" -- she spearheaded the "Dog's Rule" project herself and made it all happen! She came back at us with "Party Animals" this year . Once again it is an honor to be a contributor. Like last year, this years' book includes art images that were specifically created for the project by each of the artists. The interpretation of the theme of "Party Animals" was the goal, and each artist was given free reign!

(See "You Tube" video demo series of my watercolor painting for the "Party Animals" book)

This time though, the party is even BIGGER and more shareable (yes, that's really a word - I looked it up), because, unlike last years' project, ANYONE can enjoy a beautiful copy of this years' collaborative project because copies are for sale, with ALL proceeds - every nickel - going to benefit A Place To Bark. (Plus, your purchase is entirely tax-deductible.)

I can tell you first-hand that the quality of the printing and binding of this 'zine is gorgeous and lovely. I am proud to have my work in the book, and to be among so many other extremely talented artists who are not only each boldly unique in their own artistic voices, but who are also very generous and caring people who are all joined by our love and support of animal welfare. Because the entire monetary proceeds of the 'zine go directly to A Place To Bark, you know that your $20 purchase is making a HUGE positive impact. (The great art, beautiful printing, and inspiring words in this book make it truly gift-worthy as well).

If THAT isn't ENOUGH, the ORIGINAL ARTWORKS printed in the 'zine will be auctioned off on Ebay on October 15, with all benefits going to A Place To Bark. Mark your calendars!!

13. The day I've been waiting for...

See more BH Union Square 2009 photos on my Flickr photostream

Today was THE DAY! The Boston Handmade Marketplace Union Square show that I've been incessantly tweeting, Facebooking and blogging about finally took place today! The weather was sunny and beautiful, and we all were breathing a grateful sigh of relief, I am sure, on waking up to this weather today. It was so nice to be 'gifted' with good weather. Given the summer we have had thus far, it was, indeed, a 'gift'.(What is Boston Handmade? Read Mission Statement here.)

I shared a tent with my sister Nancy of NancyRosetta jewelry. It worked out just great to have her as a tent-mate. First of all, I do not have a tent of my own, and she likes to share, and I was thrilled to share myself, so it worked out perfect! Not to mention that she came and picked me up at my home, with all of my wares, so that was also a great thing. I'm pretty excited to be joining with her again for at least TWO dates in AUGUSTat SoWA (8/02 and 8/09 for sure, and possibly 8/30). So.. Be There, Or Be Square!

For the past week, I've been going at breakneck speed and intensity getting ready for this show. I have not done a show in *gulp* at *least* ten years... and, back THEN, I was selling ONLY greeting cards, and I'd really only done a couple of shows.

This time, it was going to be much, much more involved. I not only had to figure out what I currently had for inventory, what I wanted to add to it, and HOW I wanted to 'design' my entire stock of inventory (no, you can't just throw a bunch of unrelated objects on a table! sorry! ;) ). But, JUST as importantly, and some might say even MORE, was the fact that I needed to figure out a key element of this whole project -- my DISPLAY!!

I really don't think you can overestimate the impact of the impression your display will make to your visitors. It gives them some key unspoken clues about you. First off, it shares information about your entire visual aesthetic and your creative philosophy. It also tells them how you view your own work and how, or even WHETHER, you value it. (Surprise! You probably did not know that your choice of display had the powers of X-Ray vision!)

But, the most significant thing is that, regardless of how you "show yourself" to the public, whether consciously or not, you are making decisions on how people will size up you and your work. WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. You know that saying "You never get a second chance to make a first impression"? That saying, though I know it's a generalization, applies profoundly here. So, if you do not put the work into your own display, you are really cheating your chances at success. IF you are putting time and effort into doing shows to begin with, I think it's greatly important to put your best foot forward.

I learned a lot about my products and displays my first time out. There are some display tactics I tried that worked well, and there were some that were not successful. I took notes on these while I was still there AT my table, not after. The minute I close up shop, I know I am liable to forget all of these valuable bits of wisdom. So I made sure to seize the moment with pen and paper. Now, for the next show, I now will have a much-improved display (and maybe this will pay off with increased sales)!

In terms of product sold, I did okay today. I came away very pleased with my sales for the first time out. To be fair, the crowds were much, much thinner this year than last (which I attended but did not exhibit)... and, there were a lot of looky-loos, but not a lot of buyers. (I think people are way less impulsive to buy. At least they were today). In all honestly though, regarding sales, I was happy to get any today. And I do not mean that as a self-deprecating remark at ALL... Here is the thing: I believe in my product, in my artwork, and I absolutely ADORE it. (In fact I think I am my own biggest fan. I hope that admitting that doesn't lose me any fans.) But, I also know that this is my first run out here. I have no illusions. My plan today was to observe what people gravitated toward, what parts of my display seemed to work well and what parts did not work. To have a presence, say Hello, show my face, name, and products and make sure that my take-away "contact info" cards were within easy reach. Hey - maybe I'd even sell something (wink wink). Basically, I was entering this particular arena with a "This Is Me Putting My Best Face Forward, My First Time Out, Before I Have The Luxury Of Experience" attitude.

I have been working as a professional artist, illustrator, and graphic designer for 15 years. I have worked in various commercial markets and I have even proudly earned a little visibility in a couple of them. But, this *specific type* of market -- this live, open-air arts and crafts market for my work, is more or less new to me (save for that 6-month stint over 10 years ago I mentioned already). So, I say, jump in with both feet, but don't forget the life-preserver!

Well, I hope you've enjoyed this peek into my first art market in a really long time. I'll be doing at least two more shows this summer and I will be sure to post about the show prep as the dates grow closer. Maybe I might even be able to do a little show-and-tell on the process of product I create. I really would have loved to post a "diary" of sorts for this show - especially because it was so much trial-by-fire and that is something interesting to go through and to share. But the prep, I have to be honest, was just way too frenzied and franticfor that to happen this time out. Next time, I'll be able to be a little more relaxed about it because I now have a base to work off of. SoWA, here I come! Stay tuned for more on those dates, plus a couple of new pet portrait commissions in the works!!

16. Happy Bulldog

Here is a happy bulldog. I drew this guy while we were at Brigham & Womens, sometime in the first couple of weeks after my mom's stroke. Time goes by so quickly! Anyway this little character keeps finding his way into my drawings. (You might even recognize him!)

In other news, I'm starting to get ready for the Boston Handmade Marketplace in Union Square, Somerville. This craft show will be held on Sunday July 11th. I will be there, selling my artwork and painted goods, and will share space with my sister, jewelry maker Nancy MacCallum of NancyRosetta jewelry. It will be a lot of fun! Please come out and see us!!

24. Look what came in the mail!!

I am SO excited about the release of "You Lost Him At Hello" by Jess McCann (HCI Books). I designed and illustrated the cover, and it is my first published mass-produced fashion illustration work. I am also SO thrilled to have my work wrapped around such a witty and energetic, hilarious and ultimately VERY HELPFUL book! This book will make you laugh and nod! It's all about the laughing and the nodding... seriously. No matter if you are single and looking or married, off the market and remembering what it was like in the scary shark-infested waters of singledom, LOL!! It's a KICK! It's a big dose of very funny tough-love for single ladies who really need a friend to be objective, honest and straight with them -- but it DELIVERS the goods. Ways to improve the situation, ways to be successful at your goal!

But in all honesty, the book works on so many levels -- it's written from a salesperson's perspective and a ot of the points which are established here are really applicable to many areas of my life! SO I am reading it as written, but I am thinking about how these excellent ideas apply to my business life as well. GREAT WORK, Jess!!! I am proud to have been a part of this wonderful book and I cheer on your success!! You go, girl!!! ;)

25. You Lost Him At Hello Book Cover

This is a recently completed project! So exciting! The book "You Lost Him At Hello" by Jess McCann is sure to be a FANTASTIC read! It comes out this September and is published by the same folks who brought us the "Chicken Soup For The Soul" dynasty. Yuppers. It's available for pre-order on Amazon! Cool!!

Do you love the cover art? I do! I'm being very immodest but I have to say that I think the cover came out great. (It's my first published "fashion illustration" anything. Believe me when I say I've trained for this my entire life! Along with children's art always being a huge aspiration of mine, fashion has been also been a huge creative inspiration and passion in my life. In my teens and early twenties, I used to eat Vogue for breakfast and design my own clothes... on paper, that is, and always worn by my fashion lady drawings.).

I am thrilled to be a small part of this project by doing the cover design and illo. Cool stuff!! Please do check it out on Amazon! Who among us can't use a little romantic advice every now and again? Hey I've been married almost 14 years and as much in a love bubble as me and my hubby still are, I'm still going to read it with much interest. I mean, how do you think all us happily marrieds keep those "romance embers" alive? Ha ha! All that aside, I do love a good self-help book! :) The truth is out!

Please note: this is the NEW cover. On Amazon, the previous cover design is still visible - but the book will have THIS cover! :) )
