1. What Is the Best Way To Post a Twitter Correction?

If you ever need to fix a Twitter mistake, Social Times has uncovered a few tools to publish a highly visible correction. Check it out:

You’ll find a tool for generating strikethrough text on Fsymbols.com. Simply copy and paste the text from your Tweet (or write it in manually) and then copy and paste the crossed out text that appears in a new Twitter post. Note that doing this will double the size of the characters in the post, so you’ll need to limit your Tweets to 70 characters instead of 140. Web developer Adam Varga also has a strikethrough generator tool on his website that produces similar results.

What do you think is the best way to correct a tweet?

2. Best Quora Answer of the Year

Kenyatta Leal has won the Quora Answer of the Year award at the annual Shorty Awards. He provided a moving answer to the question: “What does the first day of a 5+ year prison sentence feel like?

Below, we’ve included links to all five finalists for the Best Quora Answer of the Year award. Leal accepted his award from prison. Here is an excerpt from his Quora essay:

I remember my first day because it was my worst day. I was sentenced to life in prison on September 25, 1995 and about a week later was transferred from the San Diego County Jail to RJ Donovan Prison for intake into the state prison system. The morning of my transfer a deputy came to my cell and told me that I was “catching the chain” to the pen.  I had just made it to sleep as my cellmate and I had stayed up late playing chess and talking. He was a 19 year old 1st termer headed to the joint with a life sentence and every night he would ask me a gang of questions about prison life. I felt compelled to answer his questions in as much detail as possible because I knew he didn’t understand the danger he was headed into and he needed all the help he could get.

4. Does Techspeak Harm Our Writing Skills?

In a survey, 64 percent of teens confessed that they used “techspeak” from texting or online communication in writing assignments at school.

Will text messaging and social networking harm our writing skills? Social Times has more in a detailed infographic:

A recent study suggests that the more kids text, the less they learn about proper grammar. Widespread use of social media sites and text messaging tools has given rise to a hybrid language called “techspeak” that’s riddled with acronyms and abbreviations instead of words and numbers instead of letters. This, we knew. But because students between the ages of 13 and 17 send twice as many messages as people in any other age group, “techspeak” is more likely to creep into their school assignments and give others the wrong impression about their communication skills.

6. 10 Ways to Syndicate Your Online Writing

If you spend hours working on a blog post, you want to find as many readers as you can for that piece of online writing. On today’s edition of the Morning Media Menu, Social Times editor Devon Glenn introduced a Launch Grow Joy infographic with 30 tools for sharing your online writing.

Above, we’ve highlighted one section of the infographic focused on ways to syndicate your writing, but you can explore the complete infographic below–how many of these tools do you use? Press play below to listen to the podcast.

SocialTimes has more about the chart: “This chart contains 30 channels where a blog post – or anything with a URL, really – might be found and shared by others online. Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest are obvious choices for sharing stories with friends, but there are other sites devoted specifically spreading and sharing links. Don’t forget StumbleUpon, Reddit, and Digg. One interesting section on this chart is a list of sites that syndicate content. Amazon, for instance, is testing out a publishing tool for bloggers on the Kindle. If you give each post the maximum exposure, you can focus on writing better stories and still get a lot of page views.”

9. How Moderating Comments Can Help Your Site

Should you moderate comments on your blog, YouTube page or Facebook Timeline? One example shows how a little moderation can go a long way…

On today’s Morning Media Menu podcast, Social Times staff writer Devon Glenn (pictured) explained how a YouTube user named Rob changed the hostile mood of commenters on his site by turning on the ‘Approve Comments’ feature.

Check it out: “At the time, Rob was enrolled in a graduate program for social research. He decided to use ‘Bird Face’ to conduct a social experiment of his own.  First, he removed many of the negative comments about the video. Then he turned on the ‘approve comments’ filter to keep the flame wars under control. ‘People tend to go with whatever the vibe is,’ Rob said, and he noticed that the first few comments effectively set the tone for the rest.  Now viewers concede that ‘the effect is pretty cool.’”
