1. Fuse 8 TV: Geoff Rodkey and Reading (Too Much) Into Karen Katz

And a happy Thursday to you all.  It’s May 21st and that means another episode of Fuse #8 TV is up and running.  As per usual I kick the whole kerschmozzle off with a new edition of “Reading (Too Much) Into Picture Books”.  Though I had a recent request to tackle The Giving Tree, I couldn’t find an adequate hook.  Until I do, I find that the board book Subway by Anastasia Suen (illustrated by Karen Katz) has a spy thriller vibe going on just below its seemingly innocuous surface.  Doubt me?  Check it out.

As for our special guest, I was pleased as punch to speak to Geoff Rodkey.  For years I’ve been a fan of his Chronicles of Egg series.  Now he has a whole new bunch of books out, this time with Little, Brown.  Beginning with The Tapper Twins Go to War (With Each Other), Geoff speaks frankly and honestly about his screenwriting life, publishers he’s dealt with, and the true nature of his work on the Carmen Sandiego video games.

All other Fuse #8 TV episodes are archived here.

Once more, thanks to Little, Brown for being my sponsor and helping to put this together.

2. Book Festivals are fun!

Book Festivals - I love them! Not only do you get to meet great kids who are excited about reading, parents who are excited about kids reading, you also get to visit with lots of great authors and illustrators.

Yesterday I was part of Cape Elizabeth, ME, Book festival - their first and they did a great job! Over 30 exhibitors and a wonderful flow of people all day. Makes the heart sing!

Here are a few pics of the day ...

4. Get Ready to Ride the Subway!

Read It. Move It. Share It.
Each month dance educator Maria Hanley and I explore a different picture book for our "Read It. Move It. Share It" collaboration. I recommend a book, Maria incorporates it into her creative movement classes, and we both share our experiences. This month I'm recommending the picture book Subway.

I've traveled on the "BART" in San Francisco,  the "Tube" in London, the "Metro" in Paris, the "Metro" in Washington, DC, and the "Subway" in New York City. Now that I think about it, I've been on quite a few underground railways... and I really like them!

Sometimes I like the bustle of people in the subway station, like on a busy weekday morning or on a Saturday afternoon when the station is bursting with tourists. Other times I enjoy a quiet station, like in the late evenings, when just a few people are milling around. And I always love the whirrr of the train as it finally approaches the station and I know that I am one step closer to my destination.

Washington DC Metro -- near me!

5. 7 Excellent Things

Since my last blog post a goodly amount of excellent things happened. Here's a quick list.
(There were some un-excellent things also. But who the heck wants to hear about those?)

1. My application for the Princeton Book Festival, NJ Sept 2012 was accepted. I'll be there with 'HIDDEN NEW JERSEY' and the author Linda Barth :-).

3. I WILL be going to ALA summer conference after all! (Just like Cinderella). I get to sign the 'All Star Cheerleader' books with the author, Anastasia Suen on Kane Miller's booth and also will have a slot with Charlesbridge. Yippee! Come by and see me if you are going to be there.

6. Books in boxes!

Love it when a package arrives you weren't expecting!!

The next two books in the 'All Star Cheerleaders' series by Anastasia Suen, published by Kane Miller.

Don't you love the colours the cover designer used? These are such fun stories ... I gave the first book to my little twin girl cousins and they devoured it, even though they are not into cheerleading. Testament to Anastasia's brilliant writing. She nails this age group on the head.

Well, one more to illustrate in this series ...

give us a 'C' - give us  'H' ... etc etc etc.

7. Kids' Internet Tuesday

Yesterday (approximately 53 minutes ago) was Kids' Books Website Tuesday - the day I share a blog or website (or two) devoted to children's books.  Enjoy.

A Fuse #8 Production is written by book blogger and librarian, Elizabeth Bird.  The blog is hosted/sponsored/part of School Library Journal's amazing Internet resources for people who like schools, and libraries, the materials found in those institutions and the people who frequent both.  Book reviews - lots of book reviews - commentary on what's happening in the publishing world for children and teens - interesting stuff about authors and illustrators - it's all on this blog.  I check with Betsy's blog to keep on top of what's new and different in writing for young people.

For those of us who sometimes need picture books on a theme, check out 5 Great Books, a blog written by author and literacy consultant, Anastasia Suen.  Suen lists five recommended books on different topics.  Her choices are designed to appeal to beginning readers.

Suen writes for this age group, too, and she features one of her books every week on another blog, Anastasia Suen's Book of the Week.  If you read the sidebars of these blogs, you will find links to Suen's other online presences including a daily blog on Picture Books and another one on Chapter Books and an e-newsletter.  Fun, helpful and informative!  Thanks, Anastasia.

8. September, September

Fall is coming quick to Maine. It seems amazing that the summer has come and gone so quickly, but there it is. We've been stacking wood, fitting a new propane stove and insulating. The leaves are tinging red and yellow, birds are gathering, the garden is giving up it's last thrust of produce and it's time to think about submitting dummies. Well, it is in this house anyway!

Submitting is something I haven't been doing much of lately. The last two months I have been deep into finishing the final illustrations for the next two chapter books in the 'All Star Cheerleader' series for Kane and Miller by Anastasia Suen. Each book has 23 black and white illustrations and colour covers. You can buy the first one on line right now!

In fact I was so deep into them that I even forgot to blog! Wowser!

So, that is why I am thinking about submitting dummies ... I have several hanging around, and they are no good loafing around on my desk, it's out into the world they go. It's back to  the CWIM to research likely publishers and fingers crossed on interest and not rejections. But, hey ho!

The hurricane passed us by uneventfully (Irene). Power off for a bit, but nothing horrible. Poor Vermont, they had a rough time, we were lucky. I will be glad when hurricane season is over, although all we get usually is humidity and a deal of rain. I don't mind rain, but if I wanted humidity I would have stayed in South Carolina.

I did make time to visit the Camden Book Fair and listen to some excellent authors and illustrators. It was nice to take a few hours out. Here's who attended ... I got some fabby signed copies!

How many do you know? Spot Toni Buzzeo, Jeannie Brett, Chris Van Dusen, Stephen Costanza, Cynthia Lord and Melissa Sweet amongst others.

The beautiful harbour and library in Camden, Maine.

All of which gave me some great inspiration for my own work. It occurs to me that this is the first time since October 2010 that I haven't been illustrating a book for someone else. It has been fantastic, and it has been a little frustrating ... working on my own projects has been limited. Hence no submissions. This week I have been reviewing and rethinking. There are new stories I would like to work on. Heck, I would love to get back to the MG I star

10. Tick Tock Taylor!

It's very exciting to have 'Tick Tock Taylor' almost on the bookshelves!

This is the chapter book I have been illustrating for Kane and Miller Publishing, author Anastasia Suen and have been BUSTING to tell you about.

Here's the cover ...

This is the first in a series of 4 in the All Star Cheerleaders series and each one will feature a different member of the squad. I loved illustrating Anastasia's work. The inside illustrations are black and white, with tints added in photoshop. The ink work is done with dipping pen - which can lead to some big blots (so you have to start again), but gives a lively and varied line, because once it is done, it is DONE and there is no changing it. Well, except in photoshop of course. I love working in this loose, fun style and although drawing cheerleaders was a challenge at first (being English I know very little about the cheerleading world) I soon got into the swing of it.

Here are a couple of examples of the interior illustrations.

So if you have any little cheerleaders, or wannabee cheerleaders in your life, this is the series for them!

I hope to meet up with Anastasia at ALA next year to promote the books.

I will be starting on number two in the series shortly and I can't wait!

So for now it's bye bye from Tick Tock Taylor

And give me a W give me a B!

Oh ... I can't resist ... this is the teeny TINY squad ....

12. How To Read A Poem Aloud, Part 3

April is flying by, but there is still plenty of time for poetry tips from our Lee & Low poets! This one is from Anastasia Suen who has published a whole plethora of titles with Lee & Low, most in our Bebop imprint. Her works include What Do You See at the Pond?, Pencil Talk and Other School Poems, and Toddler Two/Dos Años.

“Poetry is spoken music, so it sounds best when it is read aloud. Most poets let you know when to pause by ending a line or using punctuation. Just read aloud to see how it flows. Then get dramatic. Poetry is meant to be performed.

To celebrate National Poetry Month, I invite students (of all ages) to participate in a poetry writing experiment I call EduHaiku. Write a haiku about what you learned in school that day and share with me on my EduHaiku blog or twitter. Happy writing!”

14. Helping Children Write

Today I read a short article by author, Anastasia Suen, about "Teaching Sentence Fluency with Wordless Books." She suggests using wordless picture books and letting the students write the story based on the pictures.

We did much the same technique when I worked in an elementary school library. Each year we would have the three second grade classes put into words the wonderful wordless classic, THE SNOWMAN by Raymond Briggs.

With each different class we had them decide as a group what the name of the characters in the story were to be. Then 2-3 students would be given one page of the story to tell. We would gather each group's page, put them in order, and post the entire story on the wall outside the library. The students loved this activity. They enjoyed reading the other two classes' stories as well--because even using the same illustrations, the three classes' stories differed. A wonderful way to emphasize the unlimited creativity we each possess--how we each see the world a bit differently.

What a great way to encourage young writers and readers. This activity could easily be used at home as well. The simple truth is the better a child can read and write the better he will do in school. Help your child(ren) become great readers and writers and have fun while doing it.

16. Multicultural Books for New Readers

Prolific author, teacher and consultant Anastasia Suen has recently had an article posted to Booklist online called Ten Multicultural Books for New Readers (first published in December 2009). The books highlighted make for a nice round-up, and her intro, for a timely commentary. Children learning to read on their own will definitely benefit (on many levels) from reading the easy readers and chapter books with narrators of color that she calls attention to. We don’t have nearly enough of these books in the market, so it’s good to see existing ones being given thought and attention.

For more on Anastasia’s books and work, check her website and literacy blogs.

17. Nonfiction Monday; Thank You, Anastasia Suen!

Nonfiction Monday is just that -- on Monday, reviewing and blogging about nonfiction.

I'm not always organized enough to do Nonfiction Monday. And when I am organized enough to say, "I have a nonfiction book! Schedule it for Monday!" rarely then do I add it to the links at that day's round up host. My list of nonfiction Monday posts is few, but they are there!

Anastasia Suen, author, consultant, teacher, explains all about Nonfiction Monday at her website, Picture Book of the Day Using Picture Books to Teach the Six Traits of Writing. including locations. Kidlitosphere Central has the listing of most of the 2009 locations for Nonfiction Monday. If you're a member of the kidlitosphere listserv, a weekly reminder of location is sent out.

One of the things I like about Nonfiction Monday (and Poetry Friday, which I'll blog about later) is that nobody "owns" them. Yes, Suen started and organized Nonfiction Monday. But she shares it with everyone, even inviting other bloggers to be host. What matters to Suen is not statistics, linkage and glory; what matters is that nonfiction is being highlighted every week, and that Nonfiction Monday is a group effort in that anyone can be part of it, including hosting, which is a fabulous way to get links and get blog exposure.

Suen's first Nonfiction Monday post, on January 14, 2008, was Rough, Tough Charley by Verla Kay, a picture book biography. The first round-up of links from amongst book bloggers was on January 28, making it the first Official Nonfiction Monday Roundup Post.

Last week, the round up was at the blog, Wild About Nature. Today, it's at the Booklist Bookends Blog. What a variety in the blogosphere just between those two blogs, which shows how this is truly for everyone. The only criteria? Blogging. About nonfiction books. And while some people prefer Mr Linky, other prefer to do their round-up "old school," with an individual write up and link for each participant. I used to do that for Poetry Friday; that is love, people, love and dedication and time.

Want to be a part of it? Go for it! Blog about something nonfiction on Monday. See how easy it is? And my own resolution is to when I blog about nonfiction on a Monday, I'll click over to the host and add my link.

18. Search Me!

I was just surfing the web, reading some of my blog faves, when I read about "branding" on Anastasia Suen's blog. I thought this new site that she pointed out, "Search Me", was so cool that I wanted to point it out. What a great way to see how the web defines you! Not only does an assortment of categories come up when you search your name, but when you click on a category, a series of web shots come up, which show where you've been featured. Very cool--I'm so glad Anastasia blogged about "branding" and this new site!

20. Are You an Easy Reader?

We're adding a new category for the 2008 Cybils--Easy Readers. Easy Readers are those 6" x 9" books found in the easy-to-read section. The category will be headed up by none other than Anastasia Suen (Book of the Week, Children's Book Biz News, Picture Book of the Day, Scholastic's Kid Lit Kit) and we're looking for judges. If you're interested, read the judging announcement on the Cybils blog and send me and Anne an e-mail. (If you've already written in, but would consider serving on Easy Readers, then please also drop us a line.)

P.S. I am 24 hours behind responding to Cybils e-mails. Do not panic. I will answer Thursday afternoon.

24. Manuscript Request

My morning started out rough. I dropped my coffee and sprained my ankle. I promise that I was actually going to get out and try to go on a walk for exercise today. I did do extensive pruning and mulching though, so I was still able to take advantageous of the gorgeous day.

Last night I finished my online picture book class taught by Anastasia Suen. It was bittersweet to finish. I learned so much and would highly recommend her course to anyone that is serious about writing picture books. I also signed up for her Yahoo group because she sends out alot of information on the writing industry.

For my last lesson, I had to include my top 5 publishing houses. Today, I got a request for my picture book manuscript from a publisher on my list. This is a manuscript that I got critiqued as part of my class, so I feel that I now have a better version of it to send out.

I love the sun and something other than No!
