1. Conference Update

CHANGE:  Creative Art Director, Stacey Williams-Ng consultations have changed to all private half hour one-on-one consultations, but staying at the sharing price of $45.  Learn how you can take advantage of blending your manuscripts with the new interactive storybook technology available.  Everyone who signs up will get to send in their manuscript in advance so Stacey can be prepared with information specifically for you.

NOTE: If a faculty member does NOT appear on the list, they are no longer available for that One-on-One. (This does not mean they aren’t attending.) Only the time slots which appear are still available. Check back periodically, in case a slot opens up.

If you want to go back change a choice: Whether this is your first time registering, or you are back to make a change in a previous selection, to UNselect a choice, you simply click on the BLANK SPACE at the top of the drop down list. If the faculty member no longer appears here, but you wish to UNselect that member, please contact Donna Marie Taylor at [email protected] .

  • For critiques and consultations, submit your manuscript by April 30th via email listed below the faculty member’s name. Put your full name as the “subject” of the email. You may submit either one picture book (less than 10 pages) or a short synopsis and the first 15 pages of a novel.
  • If you have signed up for 2 editor/agents and 1 Author critique and would like to add another editor/agent, you can e-mail Donna Taylor and ask to be put on the waiting list.
  • If you would like to sign up for two portfolio critiques, send Donna an email with your request.

We will do a few dinners with editors and agent in July and Aug.  There will not be as many this summer, so if you are one of the many who love the dinners, you need to keep an lookout for when I announce them.  You will hear about it here first.

Registration has been going well.  We are almost half full.  Just remember ”Early Bird” is over on March 1st.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy

2. Critique Opportunity

For those of you who may feel like you missed your chance to come to the conference and snag a one-on-one critique with an agent, I have a ground floor opportunity for you.

I was on the phone today with Edward Necarslumer Director of the Children’s Literary Department at McIntosh & Otis.  He mentioned that Christa Heschke, his assistant for the last two years, is about to step out of the Necarslumer shadow and take on clients of her own.  Of course, I was interested in seeing how we could work together to get some of our attendees work in front of her.  This is what we came up with:

Christa will attend the June 3rd to 5th conference and do critiques.  She will not accept general submissions afterwards, like the rest of the faculty, but she is looking to start her client list.  That’s why I said it is a ground floor opportunity.  With Edward behind her, I have no doubts she will be a great future agent.  I met her a while ago and she’s very nice.  I know you will like her, too.

So if you are late to the party or if you just thought you couldn’t meet the deadline or looking for that ground floor opportunity, here’s your chance to make it happen.  I’m making it easy for you, all you have to do is e-mail me to secure a spot, mail your check and e-mail your submission by May 10th.  You save some money, too.  The critique price is only $55.

If you are interested, contact me.  Some of her spots have already been snatched up.  Sorry, I don’t have a picture of Christa, but I’ll get one.

Here’s a little bit about Christa:

Christa Heschke graduated from Binghamton University with a major in English and a minor in Anthropology.  She started in publishing as an intern at both Writers House and Sterling Lord Literistic, where she learned about and fell in love with the agency side of publishing.  Christa became Edward Necarsulmer IV’s assistant at McIntosh and Otis, Inc. in the Children’s Literature Department in 2009. Within Children’s,  Christa is interested in fantasy, historical fiction, paranormal romance, horror, dystopian, humor and the occasional chick lit title, but is open to most any genre Picture Book to Young Adult.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy

4. NJSCBWI Conference Explained

At the top of the first page of the registration form you will find the Friday Intensive Workshops.  These take place on Friday afternoon and require additional payment.  Please look at the .pdf on the website for descriptions for these.  Example: Self-Editing is the Intenisve that Harold Underdown and Eileen Robinson are conducting on Friday, Illustrators is the Illustrator Day with the Art Directors.  Remember “Early Bird” Registration ends on February 15th.

Below is the part of the registration you use to sign up for a manuscript critique or a portfolio review.  If you are an illustrator and sign up for a portfolio reveiw, you can also get a manuscript critique for $55, then your second critique would have to be with an author.  Please remember that author critiques are very valuable and the published authors we have chosen are extremely good at doing critiques.   Everyone must sign up for an author critique before they can get another editor or agent critique.  Harold Underdown, Scott Treimel and Eileen Robinson are only doing the special consultations.  Leeza Hernandez is doing a special Portfolio Review for Illustrator who may not be ready to have an art director view their work.

Notice under Manuscript Information: In my example the first critique, which is numbered 1, is a humorousMG.  Number 2 is a rhyming PB and number 3 is a edgy YA.

Below is the second page of the Registration Form.  I am hoping that seeing one filled out will help everyone. The letters with the numbers by each workshop are for internal use only.

The Mix and Mingle on Friday night is with the faculty, there will be heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

Please take a few minutes to read over the information that is in the pdf files on the website.

We tried to answer all your questions in those, but feel free to ask questions.

Hope this helped.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy
