2. Book Browsing

I headed to Parables for book browsing and grabbed one off the shelf to sketch. I haven't read it, but liked the cover so it became part of my prop along with my new handbag and leather pencil case which I carry with me at all times. I love to capture moments whenever I have the opportunity.

Today it rained and snowed simutaneously and was relatively warm (low 40's) and you needed and umbrella however by the time I left the office for home it had turned to freezing and I had to scrape the windows. I cranked up the heat and my feet have finally thawed. Not a good idea to stand in snow and ice while scraping your windows. I should have had boots on but who was to know?

Joining in the fun of the Self Portrait Party. Ok, so my chin is not that saggy but what do you expect from a half of a blind contour?

5. Theory

While waiting in line to have my vehicle washed yesterday, I did a quick sketch in semi-blind contour of the car ahead of me going through the car wash. It occured to me that my illustration fit the theme for this week's Illustration Friday word "theory."

Here's the true fact and theory behind getting my car/vehicle washed. Every time I wash my vehicle it ultimately snows or rains right afterwards. It's the weather theory of "I-know you will, so I will". The weather and I don't have a great relationship when it comes to washing my vehicle. Today it is suppose to snow about 1 inch. The dark clouds are looming in the sky. That means I won't make it to work with a clean vehicle again tomorrow as the roads will be covered with sand and salt-it never fails!

For more blind contours view them here, here and here.

For Illustration Friday's "stitch" word of the week. I'm not sure if I will be able to finish it by Friday so I am posting the work in progress.

11. It's Party Time!

Kari at Artsy Mama's is having an Artful Blogging party in celebration of Stampington's new Artful Blogging magazine. I'm joining Kari's party with an illustration created in my own vintage-modern style. I always love a good party and hope you'll join in the fun too! Mind if this fellow joins the party to help serve up the cake and treats~we ladies need to be pampered don't we? And for all those who have a birthday this month, Happy Birthday to you!
If you'd like to see more of my work visit my Flickr account.

Today I opened the most incredible package from the "Queen of Treasures", my Mom. I haven't even had a chance to photograph everything but I can tell you I was just squealing with delight. Vintage, antique, heirloom, you name it! Thank you so much Mom, I can hardly wait to start working with everything. In the bottom of the box was a beautiful white cotton chenille George Washington bedspread. I've already put it on the bed and it looks simply gorgeous!

I am thrilled to be a participating artist in the " Paper Quilt Project" for the month of July, 2007, organized by Dawbis who is also an artist/environmentalist. I've just completed my "quilt" and will be sending it off in the mail tomorrow. The papers below are most of what I was sent in order to complete the project entitled, "A Day in My Life." The rest of the papers have already been used in the piece above. Whatever I created with these papers was of my own choosing.

It is important to note that the paper layout is only 3.5 x 5". The scraps are also this size or smaller so one needs to work very small in order to complete the project.

I am fascinated by the Japanese and their culture and the stories of the Geisha. The most recent movie, "Memoires of a Geisha" comes to mind. Though I have never wanted to be one, I have tried to capture the essence of "Geisha-A Day in My Life" in my paper collage.

For more artist's works at the Paper Quilt Project and/or if you would like to be a part of the project visit Flickr.

Dawbis, I popped it in the mail today and it's on its way to you!

16. Back to Basics

Getting back to the basic technical skill of drawing feels so good. The way I like relax is to sketch and my favorite place to sketch people is at Starbucks, sipping a yummy hot latte, mmmmm. This was a quick 5 minute sketch to which I added some color as I loved the red sweatshirt she was wearing from Aeropostale. I love their t-shirts too, especially this Pink Shoulder Script Baby T. They're nice and long and go great with low riding jeans. What do you do to relax?

18. Springtime

Finally, the "Springtime" piece finished! It has been on my drawing board for awhile and is it vintage- oh yes! I love "wellies" or wellington boots for gardening and buying the little seed packets of my favorite flowers. You plant them in tiny pots of dirt and watch them grow indoors, then plant them when they're ready in your garden. Click here for a close up.

19. Maggie Summers ~ Illustration & Design

A time of change. In April, I created new business cards from one of my Marie Antoinette illustrations. I thought long and hard about the new image I wanted to project and this couldn't have represented my most recent work more perfectly. Don't you agree? As ever, my work is constantly changing and evolving and in time I'll be building a new website at designerm dot com reflecting my new style.

20. Cars

Riding in cars. I'm not crazy about riding in the back seat of a car with anyone. I get a closed in feeling and I don't like it but I can do it. If the car is large and roomy I don't have a problem with it at all. I just like a lot of window to look out of.
This was a quick sketch I did of Steve, our driver when we went to Kansas City on business a few weeks ago. My hand was a bit shaky; trying to draw in the back seat of a car is no easy feat.

22. Signs of Spring

I absolutely love flowers, especially irises and they are all a bloom in our gardens now. Several of these irises are from my grandmother's garden. Sadly she passed away 8 years ago at the age of 83. I miss her so much but am greatful that she passed on her love of flowers to me. My sister-in-law had some irises from Grandma that she planted in her gardens in Florida. One day I received a package of my grandmother's iris bulbs from my SIL in the mail-I was just so tickled to receive them. My Grandmother had given me many varieties but we moved so many times in the past few years, I couldn't get them to survive the moves. Thank you Nelda Jane, I love ya girl!
Oh, how I love spring!

P.S. I have a Spring illustration in the works...check back soon!
