52. Cover Reveal: Aspen by Rebekah Crane and Giveaway!

About the book:

One quiet night in Boulder, Colorado, Aspen Yellow-Sunrise Taylor made a mistake.
In the next instant, her life changed forever.
Aspen doesn’t want to remember when Katelyn Ryan, a sleek-haired popular soccer player, crossed the yellow line in her car and smashed into Aspen’s. But forgetting is pretty hard- because Katelyn may have died – but she didn’t leave. Her ghost is following Aspen around, and heading into senior year, it’s kind of a problem. Especially when Katelyn’s gorgeous former boyfriend Ben appears to be the only person at school with a clue as to how Aspen feels.
Popularity, college, Homecoming Court, hot guys – none of these things ever mattered to Aspen. She’s been busy trying to rein in her giant mass of blonde curls, keep her stoner mother Ninny away from Toaster, her mom’s awful bongo drumming boyfriend, and prevent her best friends Kim and Cass from killing – or kissing – one another. But with Ben sitting next to her in Physics looking all too gorgeous, Katelyn’s spirit dogging her steps, and her obsessive snow-globe collecting therapist begging her to remember all the things she wants to forget, Aspen is thrust into a vivid, challenging world she can’t control … and doesn’t want to.
A darkly funny, emotionally gripping story of opening up, letting go, and moving on, ASPEN is about the best-worst accident of your life … and what comes next.

About Rebekah Crane:

Rebekah Crane fell in love with YA literature while studying Secondary English Education at Ohio University, but it wasn’t until ten years and two daughters later that she started to write it. Inspired by her past students, growing up in Cleveland with its fabulous musical theater community, and music of all kinds (particularly the Avett Brothers), she created PLAYING NICE. It is her first published novel, but having an unbridled imagination, it’s not the only fantasy world she’s lived in (just ask her husband). ASPEN, her second YA creation, is set to release in January 2014. She now lives in Colorado, where the altitude only enhances the experience.

Okay, I have to admit that I was a Brady Bunch junky when I was a kid. I watched more than my fair share of the show, and because it was in reruns, I got a daily dose of the big, happy family.  I am curious about Kieran Kramer’s House of Brady series for that reason.   I think this cover is pretty, too, and I love the hues of blue.

This hits stores August  2013.

60. The Dark Unwinding by Sharon Cameron

darkunUnbeknownst to her, as she approaches the age of eighteen, Katharine will have to make a decision that will change her life, and the lives of many others. The year is 1852, and Katharine has been sent to her uncle's estate by greedy relatives who need him to be declared legally insane in order to collect the inheritance.

At first, Katharine thinks she'll report the truth, either way - "Whatever Aunt Alice chose to do with any information I gave her was neither my responsibility nor my sin." (Page 57) - but once on his property, Katharine realizes that her uncle is not insane, just not mainstream. As Katharine becomes closer to her uncle and interacts with the people in his community, she begins to soften up to them. But when she lets her guard down, she makes herself vulnerable to those who would wish her harm. She struggles to keep her wits about her while deciding who to trust. In order to protect her uncle, she may have to lie and risk her status in society - and, unexpectedly, risk her life.

If you loved Walter Bishop on Fringe, then you are sure to have an affinity for Katharine's uncle Tully. He is an inventor, a creator of automata, brilliant with numbers but easily overwhelmed by disruptions to his schedule, by strangers, by anything or anyone that upsets his routine. Were he living in present day, he would possibly be placed on the autistic spectrum, but as this is the Victorian era, he is considered eccentric by some and crazy by others.

Steampunk is, technically, simply, a story that involves machines powered by steam. Some steampunk novels involve more sci-fi elements than others, stretching the imagination and dipping into something more fantastical, while others, like The Dark Unwinding, stick fairly close to realistic science. Most, if not all, of the creations in this story are explained, moving pieces that are based on clockwork and other such mechanisms. Uncle Tully needs help bringing his creations to life - and that's where Lane comes in. Tully just does "the numbers and the pictures. Then Lane takes my pictures and brings back my pieces and I put them together until they are what they should be." (Page 38)  Moody Lane, with his dark hair and gray eyes, is clearly the counterpart to Ben, the smiling blond boy. Both assist Tully; both connect with Katharine. Meanwhile, she clashes with Lane's aunt, Mrs. Jeffries, and tries to coax her ward, young, mute Davy, to communicate. Davy doesn't speak or write, instead clinging to his everpresent rabbit, Bertram, and saying everything he needs to say with a simple gesture, a tug, or the look in his eyes.

Katharine's maid Mary talks a mile a minute, much like I do. I loved her fast-paced monologue on page 44. Katharine, trying to process everything Mary's saying, simply blinks in response - and Mary just keeps right on talking. It was the perfect introduction for her character. Mary's exuberance energizes every scene she's in.

I enjoyed The Dark Unwinding, and the fact that it was rooted in science and in truth. I greatly appreciated the fact that, even though a sequel was coming up, this book wrapped up most of the stories and thus can stand alone. That being said, I look forward to reading the sequel, A Spark Unseen, when it is released in October 2013. It should be interesting to see what happens next.

Also, I want the dress that Katharine's wearing on the cover of the book. She reminds me of Wendy Darling there.

My favorite lines from the book include:

Life at Stranwyne hung by a ribbon, a ribbon that was currently tied to my hand. - Page 49

But people, in my experience, could be sorted like numbers: evens, odds, groups that could work together, and others that could not. My uncle was someone I could not sort at all. - Page 70

"Big things can be little." [Uncle Tully said.]
Or sometimes little things can be big, I thought.
- Page 304

I also enjoyed every single time Uncle Tully refers to Katharine as "Simon's baby!", complete with exclamation point, and this:

"Listen, little niece!" he'd yelled over the dun. "They are telling us when! Listen to the clocks tell us when!"

Dear Uncle Tully, and everyone at large: Numbers are so beautiful. I hope the clocks soothe you. Good night, gentle readers.

61. Cover Shot! Tempting a Devil by Samantha Kane

Cover Shot! is a regular feature here at the Café. I love discovering new covers, and when I find them, I like to share. More than anything else, I am consumed with the mystery that each new discovery represents. There is an allure to a beautiful cover. Will the story contained under the pages live up to promise of the gorgeous cover art?

Tempting a Devil by Samantha Kane sounds like a fun read. I’m not sure how I feel about the cover, but the premise has me intrigued. With the female model’s hand clenched in a fist, I have the impression that the male model is being too aggressive. Or maybe she’s just helping him rip his shirt off, but she’s taking a break because he is so manly and tearing his shirt off is exhausting? What do you think?

In stores July 2013

In Samantha Kane’s erotic tale of secrets and temptation, a woman whose only defense is seduction targets a rake who teaches her the true meaning of love.

As wealthy and beautiful as she is desperate, Harriet Mercer can have any man she wants—which makes picking the worst of the lot quite easy. By convincing the ton she is a ruined woman, Harry hopes to outwit the greedy, conniving cad blackmailing her into a loveless marriage. Roger Templeton is a rogue with a scandalous reputation, no expectations, and no shame. He is perfect for Harry’s fall from grace. Her brazen attempts at a very public seduction are delightful fodder for gossip . . . and pure torment for Roger.

With his pockets as empty as his heart, Roger is in no mood for games and decides to show Harry how foolish it is to tempt a devil. But behind her mesmerizing golden eyes, he sees something unexpected: a woman in trouble. Her scandalous behavior would be amusing if he wasn’t captivated by her lush, curvaceous beauty. Worse, every libertine bone in his body has turned traitorously noble. Only a rake would seduce her. But only a gentleman in love can save her.

Includes a special message from the editor, as well as excerpts from these Loveswept titles: The Devil’s Thief, Flirting with Disaster, and Long Simmering Spring.

C J Redwine has another great cover!  I loved the Defiance cover, and now that the Deception cover has been revealed, I love it, too.  I love the continuity between the two covers, and like the way the model’s hair and the title font pop out.  What do you think of this one?

In stores August 2013

Baalboden has been ravaged. The brutal Commander’s whereabouts are unknown. And Rachel, grief stricken over her father’s death, needs Logan more than ever. With their ragged group of survivors struggling to forge a future, it’s up to Logan to become the leader they need—with Rachel by his side. Under constant threat from rival Carrington’s army, who is after the device that controls the Cursed One, the group decides to abandon the ruins of their home and take their chances in the Wasteland.

But soon their problems intensify tenfold: someone—possibly inside their ranks—is sabotaging the survivors, picking them off one by one. The chaos and uncertainty of each day puts unbearable strain on Rachel and Logan, and it isn’t long before they feel their love splintering. Even worse, as it becomes clear that the Commander will stop at nothing to destroy them, the band of survivors begins to question whether the price of freedom may be too great—and whether, hunted by their enemies and the murderous traitor in their midst, they can make it out of the Wasteland alive.

In this daring sequel to Defiance, with the world they once loved forever destroyed, Rachel and Logan must decide between a life on the run and standing their ground to fight.

64. Cover Reveal–Zenn Scarlett by Christian Schoon

Strange Chemistry revealed the cover for Christian Schoon’s May release, Zenn Scarlet.   I think it has kind of a retro feel to it, and  I love the colors.  What do you think of this one?

.

Zenn Scarlett is a bright and occasionally a-little-too-smart-for-her-own-good 17-year-old girl training hard to become an exoveterinarian. She specializes in the treatment of exotic alien life forms, mostly large and generally dangerous. Her novice year of training at the Ciscan Cloister Exovet Clinic on Mars was going well – until there are a series of inexplicable animal escapes from the school that Zenn finds herself blamed for. As if this isn’t enough to be dealing with, her father vanishes under strange circumstances, and Zenn is worried that she has started hearing the thoughts of the creatures around her…

With the help of Liam, a towner boy, and Hamish, an alien bug also training at the clinic, Zenn must try to find her father, rescue the animals and unravel the mystery of who is behind the attacks on the school. And all without failing her first year.

Author bio:

Christian Schoon grew up in Minnesota, and worked his way through college in a succession of rock bands before earning his degree from the U of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Journalism.

Following a stint as an in-house copywriter/scriptwriter at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, he supplied freelance copy for the entertainment industry and scriptwriting for live-action and animated TV.

Currently, he writes from his 150-year-old farmstead in Iowa which he shares with a fluctuating number of horses (generally less than a dozen, but not always), 30 or so cats, a dog, three ferrets and a surprisingly tolerant wife.

The Zenn Scarlett books are his first novels, however he admits to being an unrepentant fan of science fiction and fantasy ever since discovering the tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs in the fifth grade. He can be found at his blog: christianschoon.com and on Twitter.

I loved Winterling by Sarah Prineas, and I am so looking forward to reading the follow up, Summerkin.  The cover just rocks!  In stores April 2013.

From now until 2/4/2013, you can purchase Winterling (digital) for $1.99 from most booksellers.  Buy it!  It was one of the best books that I read in 2012

Down through the Way she fell, feeling the wind and the pressing darkness, the dizzy thump when she landed on the bank. She was through. The air felt softer here, the shadows deeper—and the pull of her connection to the land settled into her bones.

In the Summerlands, time moves slowly, roots grow deeply, and change is not welcomed. But change is needed.

After defeating the wicked Mor and freeing her kin from deadly oaths made to this false ruler, Fer is now the rightful Lady of the land. Yet her people don’t know what to make of their new Lady’s strange ways, and neither do the High Ones, the rulers of the magical realm, for Fer is an outsider—half human.

To prove herself worthy of the Summerlands crown, Fer is summoned to compete in an epic contest where her strengths and skills will be tested and her loyalties challenged. Can she trust Rook, the puck she calls friend? Can she trust herself? If Fer fails, she will lose her land and the Way will be closed to her forever.

With stunning prose, Sarah Prineas weaves an enchanting adventure in which Fer must decide if she’s ready to rule and just how far she’ll go to protect her kin.

68. It's been 200 years of Pride and Prejudice!

Despite being 200 years old today, the story of Pride and Prejudice resonates as strongly as it ever did. To those who believe that love will prevail, the love affair between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy has become an archetype for everything a romance could be. To mark the anniversary, here are some classic covers of Jane Austen’s most famous work.

I like the simplicity of this cover for Her Knight in Black Leather by J M Stewart.  I like it even more for the lack of man titty.   That jacket is sexy!

This is another YUM! cover!  And since we didn’t get much hockey this season, I may as well read about it.  Taking the Shots by Toni Aleo will be available in May.

In Toni Aleo’s exhilarating Loveswept debut, the first in a series featuring the hockey hunks of the Nashville Assassins, a reformed bad boy helps a charming, willful woman face off against the demons of her past.

Kady Cross must have pleased the cover gods, because all of her books are blessed with incredible covers.  The Girl with the Iron Touch has the best so far! This is another May 2013 that I can hardly wait to get my hands on!

Finley Jayne, Griffin and their crew are stunned when one of their own is kidnapped. Emily has a way with machines—she can literally talk to them. But the automatons who abducted her aren’t ordinary machines. They’re almost human—and they want Emily to do something as horrifying as it seems possible.

To save Emily, Finley must contact the highly unsettling Jack Dandy and face her feelings for two vastly different men, even as Griffin’s nightmares threaten to turn into a reality that might just end them all.

72. Cover Shot! Star Cursed by Jessica Spotswood

Cover Shot! is a regular feature here at the Café. I love discovering new covers, and when I find them, I like to share. More than anything else, I am consumed with the mystery that each new discovery represents. There is an allure to a beautiful cover. Will the story contained under the pages live up to promise of the gorgeous cover art?

I loved Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood.  Loved. It.  Now the second book in The Cahill Witch Chronicles has a cover, and I only have until June to wait before I can read Star Cursed.  This is one of my most anticipated 2013 titles!

With the Brotherhood persecuting witches like never before, a divided Sisterhood desperately needs Cate to come into her Prophesied powers. And after Cate’s friend Sachi is arrested for using magic, a war-thirsty Sister offers to help her find answers—if Cate is willing to endanger everyone she loves.

Cate doesn’t want to be a weapon, and she doesn’t want to involve her friends and Finn in the Sisterhood’s schemes. But when Maura and Tess join the Sisterhood, Maura makes it clear that she’ll do whatever it takes to lead the witches to victory. Even if it means sacrifices. Even if it means overthrowing Cate. Even if it means all-out war.

In the highly anticipated sequel to Born Wicked, the Cahill Witch Chronicles continue Cate, Maura and Tess’s quest to find love, protect family, and explore their magic against all odds in an alternate history of New England.

This cover gets a big old YUM!  I love this cover!  And Beth is such a flawed character, so Dare You To should be all about the angst.  What do you think of this cover?  Did you read Pushing the Limits?? Did you like it?

"I dare you…"
If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk’s home life, they’d send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom’s freedom and her own happiness. That’s how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn’t want her and going to a school that doesn’t understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn’t get her, but does….
Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can’t tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn’t be less interested in him.
But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won’t let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all….

75. Cover Shot! Heart of Iron by Bec McMaster

Cover Shot! is a regular feature here at the Café.  I love discovering new covers, and when I find them, I like to share.  More than anything else, I am consumed with the mystery that each new discovery represents.  There is an allure to a beautiful cover.  Will the story contained under the pages live up to promise of the gorgeous cover art?

The second book in Bec McMaster’s steampunk series, Heart of Iron, recently had a cover reveal.  While I love the covers and the commotion in the background, I wish we could see a little more of the guy’s face.

In stores May 2013

In Victorian London, if you’re not a blue blood of the Echelon then you’re nothing at all. The Great Houses rule the city with an iron fist, imposing their strict ‘blood taxes’ on the nation, and the Queen is merely a puppet on a string…

Lena Todd makes the perfect spy. Nobody suspects the flirtatious debutante could be a sympathizer for the humanist movement haunting London’s vicious blue blood elite. Not even the ruthless Will Carver, the one man she can’t twist around her little finger, and the one man whose kiss she can’t forget…

Stricken with the loupe and considered little more than a slave-without-a-collar to the blue bloods, Will wants nothing to do with the Echelon or the dangerous beauty who drives him to the very edge of control. But when he finds a coded letter on Lena—a code that matches one he saw on a fire-bombing suspect—he realizes she’s in trouble. To protect her, he must seduce the truth from her.

With the humanists looking to start a war with the Echelon, Lena and Will must race against time—and an automaton army—to stop the humanist plot before it’s too late. But as they fight to save a city on the brink of revolution, the greatest danger might just be to their hearts…
