As I learn more about other artists’ work and the progression of their careers, I find it interesting to watch how their style evolves and changes, always trying something new. By starting back to school last fall to pursue a degree in Illustration, I’ve been introduced to new techniques and ideas. I’m improving my skills by brushing up on the basics but also by having the opportunity to experiment in a safe environment. So, this simple painting, “Too Good to be True” was a fun little aside. I’d found some old sheet music and used the title to inspire the art. It’s great fun! Who are some artists or teachers that you’ve learned from? How have they helped you to expand your art?

Wishing you all the best for 2013! May this be a year of JOY, peace and community! I’m looking forward to starting the new year with friends sharing fellowship, great food (Carmen’s paella!!) and a bit of the bubbly!

A friend sent me a quote, “Big Doors Open on Small Hinges.” I think I will adopt this as my mantra for the year, reminding me that baby steps lead to big changes and successes. What will you do differently this year?

Rudy says, “Find a Balance.” Juggling work, school, freelance writing, book building, social activities, sports/health, quiet time, and of course, daily walks with Rudy is always a struggle, but I am trying to learn how to prioritize and manage my time better. Some things (like laundry) can wait til tomorrow. Starting each morning with coffee in bed for 45 minutes of quiet contemplation/reading at least gets my day off to the right start, even if the rest of it goes to *@$+*. How do you find balance in your life?

FOCUS! This is one of my continuing challenges. I am distracted by too many projects, events, or silly time wasters at once, like a starling fixated on shiny sparkling objects. I need to be more like my friend Rudy here, who is part English Pointer, and zero in on what’s important. So, on that note, I am getting off the computer to work on sketches for a new book and get the dummy book finished so I can get it out the door. I’d love to hear how you make the most of your day!

I just attended the International Society of Children’s Writers & Illustrators Conference in LA–3 days jam packed with panel discussions, workshops, amazing keynote speakers and over 1200 attendees! It was energizing, intimidating, exciting, ennervating, encouraging and exhausting. I was surrounded by such talented people and came home ready to dive into new projects! WOW, what a weekend.
