Authors, illustrators, librarians, publishers …. so many people gathered to celebrate Maurice Saxby’s contribution to children’s literature.
Professor Robyn Ewing gave the keynote:- ‘Story is at the centre of what we do – imagine.’
‘A creative work remains permanently unfinished.’ Shaun Tan.
Children’s literature promotes creativity, imagination and exploration.
The inaugural Maurice Saxby lecture was the brainchild of Libby Gleeson, an Ambassador for the National Year of Reading. She was joined by other ambassadors – Chris Cheng, Libby Hathorn and me.

We didn’t manage to be there for the full two hours but the SCBWI stand at the Bologna Book Fair was even more the place to be from 12.00-2.00 today, when authors from across the regions read their own unpublished manuscript and two (later, I think, three) illustrators battled it out to draw the illustrations.
We caught most of Paul O. Zelinsky (on the left) and Bob Barner (right) working up a frenzy with a fun counting book from Kathleen Ahrens (and John Shelley on guitar!). Whern it came to 10, they pulled the flip charts together and joined forces…
Then Lesley Vamos (left) and Serena Geddes (right) illustrate a story written and read by Chris Cheng:

As Ambassadors for the National Year of Reading, Christopher Cheng and I launched Jean Genies an Gosford Library initiative supporting teen reading across Australia and beyond.
Jeans are decorated by young people from libraries and this year the jeans will be going to Peru and Slovakia this year.
The fantastic librarians Claire Stuckey and Sharon Dalgleish initiated this Jean Genies celebration of books. It’s a natural partner with the National Year of Reading.

The 2009 Black Saturday bushfires swept across Victorian townships causing devastation of community, life, land and animals. It was Australia’s highest ever loss of life from bushfires.
SCBWI Australia & New Zealand heads Chris Cheng and I made a call for new books for the schools and the Hope Cards for the kids of the bushfires and their families.
Children’s writers and illustrators from around the world sent beautiful autographed books collated by authors Corinne King and Claire Saxby with the support of the writing community.
The HOPE CARDS from around the world that were hand illustrated artwork was framed and the computer designed artwork printed in the HOPE CARD BOOKS with support from The Hughenden Literary & Arts Hotel and Final Frame.
The presentation to the children of the books and artwork, at the newly built Marysville Public School with the much loved principal Peri Dix and teachers was moving.
It was renewal, love and hope for a bright new future.

Aussie kids at Auburn North was like the United Nations.
Kids whose families come from Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan, Thailand, China, sixth generation Aussie background and more … welcomed Aussie authors.
Their Principal Mr Harris celebrated books as a way to fulfil kids’ dreams of reaching their dreams.
Their Librarian, teachers, CBC President Carole Keeble welcomed authors, kids and parents.
The MC, talented author Deborah Abela, who co-ordinated this CBCA Book Week event, had the packed library in love with her book ‘ The Remarkable Secret of Aurelie Bonhoffen.’
Oliver had them laughing; Jeni had them laughing even more; Chris has them engrossed in his amazing zoo stories and I was deeply touched that my JACK was on the feature StoryBridge painting that covered the main wall.
Thankyou to bookseller Kay from Shearer’s Bookshop, to the wonderful librarian Catherine Clift, Leanne Hodges and President CBCA Carole Keeble and especially Deborah Abela.
Thankyou to the kids of Auburn North for loving JACK.
Corinne the other day pointed us to Tarie Sabido’s blog, Asia in the Heart, as a great source of news and images from the first Asian Festival of Children’s Content, which happened earlier this month in Singapore. Authors Uma Krishnaswami, Chris Cheng and Rukhsana Khan also share their experiences of the event on their respective blogs, so I encourage you to check them out as well.
One of the many highlights of the festival was Uma and Rukhsana’s joint panel about their cross-cultural collaboration in Many Windows. Oh how I wish I could have been able to attend it!

Carol Keeble President of the CBC put on a delicious lunch – love her vegetarian lasagna – to invite authors to share ideas with the CBC. Topics on the agenda included -’ Book Week, authors and illustrators joining the CBCA, festivals and the regional CBC branches. There was enhtusiasm from the Sutherland Shire Branch and the Northern Beaches Branch of the CBC.
There were huge congratulations to Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell for their Book Week initiative in 2009, where the author-illustrator afternoon teas at four schools were a huge success. Hundreds of kids and teachers came to hear authors including Wendy Blaxland, Jeni Mawter, Kim Gamble, John Flanagan, Felicity Pulman and others.
Authors at the meeting included Chris Cheng, Deb Abela, Wendy Blaxland, Belinda Murrell, Kate Forsyth, Susanne Gervay, Jacqueline Harvey, James Roy. 
The CBCA Conference is to be held 18-19th June 2010.

Australian author and literacy ambassador Chris Cheng was recently awarded the 2009 Lady Cutler Award, given by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, for his services to children’s literature. One of the ways in which Chris has gone/goes above and beyond his call is by bringing literature to children himself, both through scheduled school visits and more informal, spontaneous connections. His commitment and enthusiasm can be gleaned from the following notes, sent per my request, about reading Christmas stories to children these past few weeks:
One of the joys of being a children’s book author (and a teacher by profession) with a wife who is a teacher librarian, is that I am able to drop in to her school on a regular basis to read to the children. One of my favourite classes to read to is Kindergarten. Reading to little ones daily is one of the things I miss about not being a fulltime classroom teacher.
This year I have visited them quite a few times, simply to have the thrill of reading aloud and getting their reactions to the books. I love the fun of making the characters’ voices (if the text says ”he screams”, I will scream!), of making the sounds to accompany the text, of “reading” the pictures with the children… In the past few weeks I have spent a few afternoons there, reading Christmas stories. Since it’s a Catholic school, it is very easy and appropriate to share the religious significance of Christmas with the children through books. Some books focus on the traditional story of the birth of Jesus; some are told from the viewpoint of the animals in the manger; others celebrate the more secular Christmas images—the reindeer, the present laden sack; Santa Claus; snow…
In some Australian Christmas books Santa Claus appears not in a red thickly lined suit, but in board shorts and sun hats (there is definitely no snow Downunder at Christmas time!). He drives a car, instead of a sleigh, pulled not by reindeer but by kangaroos. I like to expose children to both traditional and non-traditional Christmas books.
In addition to reading the stories aloud, I talked to the students. I asked for their impressions, opinions, perceptions, interpretations. We talked about the illustrations and the words used in the books. This year they talked much about presents. Not just receiving presents, but giving mums and dads presents. I really loved it when, inspired by the books we read, the children started talking about their own experiences and plans:
“We go to church the night before Santa comes.”
“I’m giving a present to my mum.”
“We light candles.”
“I’m getting my dad a present.”
“I’m making my own present and it’s a secret, but I can tell you.” (It’s a wonderful privilege to be let in on their secrets!)
Now the school year has ended in Australia. The classrooms are all packed, along with the Christmas decorations. The children are home on holidays—and busy, I imagine, making those secret presents. And it’s a nice, comforting thought to know that, through books, they will continue to learn about the joys of Christmas in all its widely different interpretations—and when it comes to helping spread the joy of reading these and other books, they know they can count on me!

Hi folks, whew, two more days until the Golden Coffee Cup ends. Yee haw! Get cracking, folks. Sands are slipping through the hour glass!

Today's Down Under high five comes from Austrailian (Oz) author Christopher Cheng. He's holding up a 5 1b. Christmas cake too, in case you are an inquiring mind who wants to know. I bet that goes good with coffee.
Here Chris offers some inspiration to create master works.
I keep a note book filled with ideas -- okay I have about 10 notebooks at the moment. They range from the crazy things I see; like
* kids picking their noses on buses and wiping the extracted clump of fluid under the seat (true it really did happen); to
* kids complaining about their parents; to
* spooky noises that I heard one night (this is now a picture book that is coming out with Random House in 2011); to
* kids saying that they can't do anything to improve the environment (after teaching an education class at the zoo which became my first picture book One child,
I use them as record keeping. I use them as inspiration. They are there to store the inner thoughts of the 9-12 year old me!
... I love just writing. I write something EVERY day!
AND you can't be a writer if you don't write. so ... grab those pens (and not the keyboard ... the physical pen on paper jot down those ideas what am I thinking thing!)
Write something.
Write a letter.
Write to Molly.
Write to Me.
Just write. and with Christmas approaching why not write cards this year ... yes physically write. What do you put on that card? Why not simply tell your wife/husband/kids/grandparents/best friends how much you love them - and WHY you love them, or the funniest things about them, or the craziest thing they did this year or .....!!! Go on put pen to paper.
And what are you thinking right now!
This guy is writing twaddle? Then write it down ... but also write down words the you would write better.
If this guy is writing some words of wisdom ... then improve those words of wisdom and write down your words of wisdom too.

Today I'm introducing something new to the Golden Coffee Cup, instead of a high five, we have a fist bump from my friend and colleague, filmmaker Paul Michael Gordon, and Spider-man. If you want to know something more about Paul, check out his short, ALMAS.
Paul offers this fab bit of java to help you on your way today: The inspiration for some of my best work does not come from tedious research or an endless amount of education, but instead the hours I spend daydreaming, reminding myself I am just a little boy wanting to be a part of a great adventure.
Paul and I are working on a screenplay project, CHARLIE STARK: CHIMERA AWAKENING. The plot centers on Charlie Stark, a teen who once led an elite team of child soldiers in a secret war. Mix in alien technology and a madman with a horrific eugenic vision for the world -- Charlie must get back in the Game, take down the madman, and work hard to not become one himself. Ya, I'm having lots of fun.
You might remember I'm finishing up this screenplay for my goal. Currently, I'm right on track. Snap! Snap! Snap! Drop your successes in the comments and I will do some more holy snappin'.

I like being an author because I get the pleasure of readers engaging in my books, without the awful burden of FAME.
As the Director of the 4th Kids and Young Adult Literature Festival I talk to creators, share story and have a great time with some of the world’s and Australia’s most admired writers.
There are HUGELY famous authors speaking including Melina Marchetta, Garth Nix, Kate Forsyth. Garth has sold 4 million books worldwide. The gorgeous Deb Abela with her Max Remy Super Spy sold all over the world. So many special authors and illustrators are speaking but NO ONE has celebrity. How lucky are they?
They don’t have to change their faces or hide behind a mask or create a safe private world away from the crowds. Michael Jackson was astonishingly talented. He leaves behind a legacy of ground breaking music, dance, video images and the knowledge that celebrity can kill you.
The Kids and YA Literature Festival is on the 4th July and the craft day on the 5th July at the NSW Writers Centre Rozelle in the beautiful grounds of Callan Park, in Sydney. Come along and say hello if you’re around. For bookings and programme log onto www.nswwriterscentre.org.au

Great SCBWI meeting with exciting news from Chris Cheng about the development of the Oz SCBWI website, speakers directory, illustrator directory, youtube channel and the development of trailers.

Specialist guest was Ron Jobe Professor Emeritus Language and Literacy Education at The University of British Columbia who had so many wonderful stories about authors and illustrators from around the world.
Sue Whiting, Wendy Blaxland, Margaret Roc and other authors and illustrators joined in and we ended up having the best lamb shank pie and soufle - specialities of The Hughenden - and great conversation and fun.

Bit of a slow day today. Had a bit of a sleep in, then puttered through the day. Have only managed 8000 steps (to 9.45pm), after over 12000 yesterday.
I did get some reading done, though. Finished The Shadow Thief and have the review written and ready to upload. Also read a little chapter book, Alexandra Aphrodite, part of Lothian’s Giggles series of short chapter books. Am now part way through

Okay it's truly countdown time. I need to look back at my original goal, but I'm working 6 days a week on the revision (with the exception of time with flu and time in Philadelphia where I spoke on a panel at the ALAN conf -- that was good time, too, as I saw my Egmont editor there and signed Tons of Stealing Death copies for the ALAN conferees.
The Golden Coffee Cup really got me through this month. Huge thanks to Molly.
Yay for signed books, travels, and tons of revisions. Snap! Snap! Snap! I was glad to be here for you!
