1. Obamas & Twilight Impact Baby Names

In two or three years, will we see lots of books with characters named Isabella and Jacob? It’s likely.

Obama’s and Twilight’s Names are Popular: Barack and Malia

The Social Security Administration tracks the most popular names and says that the changes this year bring Isabella and Jacob to the top. However, President Obama’s family has had the biggest impact on names, followed by the book/movie, Twilight.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mbgrigby/3008014961/
The name Barack rose in popularity from 1,993rd to 2,424th in popularity. Not a bad rise percentage-wise. But Barack was outdone by his oldest daughter, Malia. The name Maliyah (a variant spelling) rose from 345th to 192nd in popularity.

The lift for the name Jacob might have come from Twilight. But for sure, Cullen’s rise comes from the popular vampire movie. It rose from 485th to 782nd.

SSA Resource for Names

Character. But how does this affect your novel? Names evoke character. I think I’ve repeated before the story about Scarlett O’Hara. Her name was originally “Pansy.” What a difference a name made here! Of course, you can choose to contrast or compliment character qualities, so maybe Pansy would have worked? Nah! Not in Gone with the Wind!

Historically Appropriate. Probably the best use of the SSA baby name site is to scroll down to the form where you can input a date to see the most popular names by year, starting with 1880! What a great resource for naming characters in a historical novel.

2. Updates & A Fair To Remember

Yo, yo. What it is, Tappers.

So, looks like I took the month of August off from the bloggy blog. Sorry 'bout that. Heck, let's face it. You haven't been reading anyway. You've been busy with summer, updating your own blogs and you know...doing your own thing.

I get it. I do.

Well, I wish I could say that I'm done with GOODHALO'S mammoth revision, but I'm not. It's sloooow going, what with the other books I'm actually getting paid to write and the whole 2 other jobs and a family thing. My window of opportunity to get stuff done is small every night. Throw in the occasional late-night fire call and well...I'm shooting for the end of September to wrap this thing up.

Anyway, that's not why we're here. My family and I went out to the biggest money vaccum in the greater Twin Cities. I'm talking about the Minnesota State Fair.

It's a tradition that we go every year and this one was no exception. I won't bore you with a blow by blow, but the wackiest stuff happened about 10 minutes in.

As you know by now, I've now got two sons: Travis (4.5 years) and Jake (8 months). Since we've never been to the Fair with Jake, we had to bring a double-stroller that we had given to us from someone Laura knows from work. Her name might be Bernice, or Betty. I think it starts with a 'B.' Doesn't matter.

This thing is pretty beat up and smelled like an ashtray in a cigar factory's restroom. We aired it out, wiped it down and have used it plenty of times. We noticed one of the wheels looked a little funky, but we didn't think much of it. We were ready to roll toward deep fried goodness on a stick.

Travis & Jake, decked in their Minnesota best, ready to taste the fair.

We paid the ridiculous price of $22 to get into the fair, which to me seems criminal. Think about it. You're going in there to buy untold amounts of crap. The least they could do is let you in for free. But $11 a person? (kids were free) Can't help but feel like we took it in the shorts.

If that wasn't enough...

Old double stroller...we hardly knew ye.

About 3 minutes inside the fair, we took a turn to head down toward the Midway and breakfast (Mini Donuts). As we headed down the stretch, the stroller threw a wheel. I tried in vain to pound it back into place, but it was a total loss. We abandoned it behind a Sno-Cone stand.

Thinking we were in for a long day (and we were) we had to hit the rental place. We rolled out of the garage in a snappy new wagon for the low price of $13.

You can't keep the Troupes down. No sir. Not when there's deliciousness to be had.

For those keeping track at home, here's how much we spent within about 10 mintues:
Parking - $8 (Park n' Ride is for suckers with time to waste)
Admission - $22
Wagon rental - $13
Total - $43.00 (ouch)

The bonus? We got to see this brotherly love pretty much all day:

Travis zeroes in on the Mini Donuts, while Jake wonders where the hell we are.

A little while later, we're enjoying sugary delights and I can smell the bacon. For some reason (as my Facebook friends can attest) I've been jonesin' for the giant bacon they had last year. This year, the scent seemed to waft all the way out to Woodbury and I've been salivating ever since. Behold, the Excalibur of Bacon.

You don't need to remind me how dorky it is to wear a shirt
that shows my excitement for bacon. I know.

Anyway, here a quick run-down of the rest of the day:

We saw some cows.

These cows were resting.

Travis and I went on the Giant Slide (not pictured).

He posed for a shot just outside the slide's exit.
Travis pensively considering what ride he'd like to try next.

Jake enjoyed a bottle with about 4 horses butts less than 10 feet from him.

Best. Life. Ever.

We got our traditional Photo Booth black n' white pictures taken.

Travis went on some bumper boat thing.

A rare shot where Travis wasn't spinning out of control in the middle of Carny Lake.

Travis and I went into a funhouse (LAME), and he wanted to go again. (we didn't)

Travis then went on an Atomic Drop-type thing. I think that's what it was called.

No one wanted to sit by the boy on the end. I think his name was Stinky.

And I think he had fun.

Travis waving his hands in the air, like he just doesn't care.

From there, the day went somewhat south. We were hungry and our tolerance levels were beginning to wane. I had to wait for some chicken tenders that took FOREVER to make. We had to make a mad dash across a football field length of slow-moving food grazers to a bathroom. We had ice cream cones that melted. Jake melted down a bit and fell asleep in our arms. And then we had the LONG walk back to our car (sans wagon).

All in all? A pretty good day. Not sure how people can go more than once a year, but that's just me.

*sigh* Sad that this post constitutes the newest writing I've done in a while. It was a nice break from revising, but I can already hear the undead calling me. Calling me back.

Until next time, Tappers.

Your lovin',

TKT

Edward & Bella: An Abusive Relationship?

Blogger of the Week/Guest Blogger:
Sara Raasch...

This week Sara Raasch, who blogs at SeeSaraWrite offers a guest post delving into the underbelly of the relationship between Stephenie Meyer's Twilight characters Bella and Edward.

A lot of conversation has rolled around the book/movie phenomenon Twilight. But there is one topic that has not yet been breached (at least, not that I have read), and it's a subject I'm personally familiar with, so the insane glorification of it lately has left me fearing an epidemic. Hopefully you have recognized it too; it's one of those silent-but-deadly things that
far too many girls (because, let's face it, guys aren't as widely affected by this) are unaware of. What am I talking about? Here I go:

Abusive relationships.

Everyone knows they're "bad." Everyone knows they don't want to be in one. But what I'm seeing lately is a slow and completely unintentional brainwashing of young, impressionable girls into thinking abusive relationships are okay. Magical, even. Quite frankly, I am sick of this. This is both a PSA and a plea, a desperate beg, to writers everywhere to stop writing characters like this.

Characters like Edward Cullen. Remove the actual story and look at the facts of what Edward does: he keeps Bella from her family; he won't be with her unless she changes very materialistic things about herself (the car she drives, her stance on wearing engagement rings/getting married); he breaks into her house and hides in her room while she sleeps; he does all this under the banner of "I know what's best for you. You don't." While Meyer (probably) wrote these things to be charming in a young-love way, they ARE NOT charming. Hearing them for what they are (alienation, ultimatums of the petty and controlling sort, stalking, manipulation) automatically evoke the response of "No. These things are wrong." But in the context Meyer put
them, they're disguised as all right.

Maybe I'm blowing it out of proportion. But hearing my 16-year-old sister say that these things are CUTE is disgusting and terrifying, and I'm very angry with Stephenie Meyer for telling her legion of tween-age fans that these things are all right. Thousands of girls get into abusive
relationships without seeing it, and don't realize until afterward how they could've avoided it. But now, with Edward Cullen as the prime love example, will girls be LOOKING for men like him? I can't stomach that.

The most disturbing part of all this is the response girls have to being told Edward Cullen is a horrible example of a boyfriend. I went to the Breaking Dawn release party last August, wearing a "Team Jacob" shirt. Edward fans, whom I didn't know, would come up to me and make snide remarks about "that stupid dog." When I asked what Jacob did wrong and pointed out what Edward did wrong, they got red-faced angry and stomp away. People at this release party throughout the night continued to get angry because of my Team Jacob shirt. At first it was funny; now, though, it's a little worrisome.

Again looking at the facts, Jacob was what should have been the "perfect" boyfriend. He accepted Bella for what/who she was; he helped her become a stronger person; he supported her and comforted her, never pushing her into any decisions about herself; her friends and family approved of him. And yet, despite his good qualities, the Edward fans HATE Jacob. HATE him.
And none of them has ever given me a straight answer as to why. They can only say that Edward is better, Edward is better, Edward is better. Which, if you ask someone who is in an abusive relationship why they stay in it, they are so blinded by it that all they know is that he is the one. He is the one. He is the one.

I take advice from a lot of what I read and know that if I had read these books before my own relationship, it would've been a lot harder to let go and get out. Books like these give girls a battle cry:

"Edward did it, so it's all right."

"Maybe my boyfriend really does know what's best. Maybe there's some secret,
magical reason he's doing this to me too."

THERE IS NOT a good reason. There never will be. And girls need to STOP being told this is all right behavior.

I know if any hardcore Edward fans read this, I'd probably get some nasty hate mail. And maybe it's just my rather cynical view of the male species that makes me pick out every bad detail about Edward, but I honestly do like Jacob. He was the one thing Meyer did right. And he, not Edward, should be who all the tween-fans swoon over and hope for.

5. Boys Night

So tonight marks the first night I've been left home alone with both boys. You know, all by myself.

It hasn't been so bad so far. Jake slept long enough for us to eat the pizza we ordered.

Travis made another masterpiece.

But the highlight? We bought a certain KC & the Sunshine Band song and Travis got his groove on.

Oh crap. Big Jake just woke up...and he's hungry.

6. Oh, hi!

Hey, hey, hey...

That's supposed to be Fat Albert greeting you to another long-overdue post on the nearly defunct-ness that is my blog, Tappity Tappity. Thanks for stopping in.

Truth be told, I'm feeling like Fat Albert these days. Raising these kids is really knocking me off my working out gameplan. Really. It's sooo dang tough nowadays to get out of the house for a little bit and do that whole Gold's Gym thing. But...it's only a matter of time. Laura and I are gonna work out a gameplane that's gonna let both of us rotate and go...somehow, someway.

But enough about me, how are you?

Hey, that's great!

Well, a few things have happened as of late and I'd be a complete d-bag not to at least touch on some of 'em, so here goes.

Library Visit - Wouldn't it be funny if this was just about me going to the library and checking out a couple o' books? Well, maybe not. But, I had my first author reading/library visit a few Saturdays back. It's been in the hopper for a while, but it just never came to be. So...about a year and a month after the release of Patrick's Super Socks, I hit the ol' Woodbury library and did a good ol' fashioned reading. I had some copies of PSS to sell, along with my newest release, Mount Rushmore.

Apparently the library put an ad in the paper and everything. I'm just glad I put an event thing in Facebook. I had a bunch of peeps from my family along with friends and firefighting pals show up with their kids. It was a good thing. Otherwise, it would've been like Spinal Tap doing their record signing.

Well that's nit-picking, isn't it?

Anyway, it went pretty well! I got to read the book to a bunch of little people, I sold a couple and I don't think I made a complete b-hole out of myself. The best part? My mom recorded a good chunk of the reading with her digital camera. Thinking it worked like pictures do, she turned the camera on its side so that 75% of what she recorded is sideways. Ah, technology in the hands of my mom...
The best part? That's Travis in the light blue sweater.
He's tired of Patrick and his dumb super socks.

Two TKTs for the price of...one?

Big Jake - If you can believe it, our little(st) guy is almost 2 months old. Really. To compound the craziness, he's A GIANT BABY. He was wearing a shirt that was made for 9 month olds. He clocks in (according to his check-up today) at a whopping 14 pounds. I weighed that when I was 6 months, according to the Mom Almanac. He's also 26 inches long. So, in the space of under two months, the little dude has gained 5 pounds and grew 5 inches. Ummm...is that even possible?

Our meaty little man.

Books, Y'all - In other exciting author news, I'm done with my 3 newest books, which will be released with the If I Were a Firefighter book next spring. They're the ones tenatively titled Fairy Tale Stars and there's a Trolls, Elves, & Dragon installment. Pretty crazy. I still find it hard to believe that I've got two books out now and that by this time next year, I'll have 8 out. Good times! They're fun to do, but a part of me is pretty stoked to have them done so I can get back to work on my other projects.

Twitter - I've joined what I used to call 'Blogging for Lazy People' (look who's calling the kettle black!) and I thought I'd give Twitter a try. Find me, uh...twitting at www.twitter.com/tktroupe.

Movies and such - As I mentioned a few posts back, I'm INHALING movies and shows. It's all one can do when you've got a big ol' baby to cool out with at night. So, I won't bore you with details, but here's some crap I've been watching.

Pan's Labyrinth - Stellar! My first movie on BluRay. After seeing this I'm confident that 'The Hobbit' is going to rock the pants right off of me.

Storytelling - I like controversial movies, but this one was a turd of the highest caliber.

Quarantine - I really liked this movie. Not for the easily squeamish or people who get motion sickness. Zombies, face-biting and just plain awesomeness.

Persepolis - Eh... I think it won some awards and it was visually pretty cool, but overall it didn't do a whole heck of a lot for me.

Spellbound - A documentary about the National Spelling Bee. Well done and oddly riveting!

Zombie (also known as Zombi 2) - A crappy old zombie movie that was done in the late 70's. Absolutely hilarious for all the wrong reasons. Over-acted scenes, gratutious nudity, and people getting their faces eaten. Also, shark vs. zombie. I'm not even kidding. So, naturally, I loved it.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Dude. Maybe I'm a simple man who likes simple things, but I REALLY dug this flick. It's all time-twisty and awesome and also has Albert Finney in it who is the closest thing to god in my book.

Website - I think this is the year I get a website built. I sort of need to do some research and see what I want to have done, but I'm putting the feelers out there. I know a couple peeps and if I can round up a few dollars, I think something wicked cool is on the horizon. I'm hoping for a GOODHALO-esqe site, chock full of zombies and such. It'd be one part promotion, another part awesome. How can it lose?

Anyway...I'm going to do my best to be more post-er-ific. Maybe having that dumb ol' Twitter thing going will sort of give me the atomic kick in the pants I need. Plus, these long-winded 'hey everybody here's what I've been doing all month' posts are for the birds.

Thanks for shopping! See you in the emergency room.

Ha ha ha! *trip*

7. Options on a Thursday Night

Sitting up with a little dude (6 weeks old yesterday) isn't always easy. Not that I'm surprised by this, but it's one of those things where I find myself at a crossroads every night. There's that space of a couple hour between when Travis & Laura go to sleep and when I finally collapse into a tired heap of garbage into bed.

So, here are the options I've got:

- Watch the Netflix movie I got in the mail a couple o' days ago. (This Film Is Not Yet Rated...a documentary about the rating system and how it's kinda corrupt) What can I say? I love me some documentaries these days.

- Continue to upload more songs into iTunes. I'm at the end of the alphabet in my CDs, but of course I've bought a few CDs in the 4 years since I got my first iPod (R.I.P. Robotron 1.0)

- Troll through all the uploaded movies through Netflix on the Xbox 360. Currently, I've got 40-something sitting there, just waiting for me to watch. Gotta love unlimited video streaming through the ol' Xbox.

- Read the book I'm slowly working through 'Beautiful Boy' by David Scheff. Great book about a guy who has a son that gets hooked on Crystal Meth.

- Read through Anna 2.0 (the book I'm editing now) and see if I can't find more stuff to change, add, cut, etc...

- Play the add-on to Grand Theft Auto 4 - Lost & Damned. It's decent, but eh...

- Write a 'worthwhile' post on this long-neglected blog. (this doesn't count)

- Plan out what I'm going to do for my library visit/reading on Saturday.

- Work on the two books that are due on March 15th.

Now, these are all solid options...the problem? At any given moment:

- Jake could wake up.
- My pager could go off (which means I have to ditch anything I'm doing instantly)

It's an adjustment going from having a kid who sleeps the night and is potty-trained to having a little guy who doesn't know the rules yet. You know? And no, I'm not so daft that this is a suprise to me, still...it's kind of strange to be at this point again, that's all.

Anyway...those are my Thursday options. I'm still no closer to figuring out how I'll spend my time.

Oh...I guess I could go outside and shovel the 2 feet of snow that's STILL falling.

Yeah. Right.

8. Hey Brother!

Big Jake. 6 days old.

Seriously. My new kid hasn't been here for over 2 weeks already. Has he? Seriously? Must be. I went back to work yesterday and I'm just stunned by how quickly the time has flown. It's frightening, actually.

If someone's got the spare time and the funding, I've got a research project idea. Let's see if there's some sort of time flux thing that happens to people with every kid they add. My theory? The more kids you have, the quicker the time flies. There's gotta be something to it.

To that end, Jake is going to be my final installment in the kid saga. We're done. Two boys is more than enough to keep us busy.

So...I thought I'd just get on here and talk about the whole 'going into labor' story and all the craziness that ensued when Big Jake made his appearance. But honestly? There really wasn't anything to it.

This is coming from the guy who didn't have to push an almost 10-pounder through his crotch...

But seriously, folks. You can ask Laura and she'll tell you, the difference between having Travis and having Jacob is like night and day. She pushed for 4 hours when she was in labor with Travis.

With Jake? 46 minutes.

We were at the hospital for the entire two days. This time around? We cut out early, after a day of sitting around and not doing much.

I can tell you that Jake was born on one of the coldest days in Minnesota history and that, like his older brother, decided to wait until the day after his due date to arrive. That's just the way the Troupe brothers roll.

Laura bounced back almost immediately after Jake was out the chute. Really. She will be the first to tell you this pregnancy was 10x harder than the first time around.

A big ol' pile of awesome.

- She went to bed early, usually around 8pm when Travis did. Heck, sometimes she was asleep before TKT Part 2.
- She snored like a grizzly bear for the last 4-5 months of the pregnancy, which caused yours truly to have to sleep elsewhere. I can usually sleep through a hurricane, but Hurricane Laura proved too much even for me.
- She had heartburn and an upset stomach on an almost daily basis.
- Morning sickness? Not so much.

I like how we pretend that Jake isn't screaming bloody murder in his bear suit.

But things went well and it's hard to believe the little guy is here and part of the family. It's definitely strange not being able to have anyone but our kids sit in the back seats of our cars and just weird as all get-out to change diapers, mix up bottles, etc... I thought I'd be rusty when it came time to re-diaper the little guy, but I've got it down to a science. Even after 4 years!

The greastest thing? Travis is so excited about having a little brother now. Almost daily, he peeks in at Jake while he's sleeping and says:

"Look at that cute yittle (that's how he says 'little') guy."

or

"Hey brother." (which immediately reminds me of Arrested Development)

Anyway...life is good. Thanks to all for your well wishes and words of congratulations. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by.
