Most people know of the musical Wicked, a revisionist telling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz that empathises with the ‘bad’ witch, but not everyone knows that it is inspired by Gregory Maguire’s The Wicked Years series: Wicked, Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men and Out of Oz. He’s written other […]

So this was an illustration about colonialism, mainly European and to the South. The illustration was published in Maailman kuvalehti which is a Finnish magazine that mostly deals with subject matter outside the developed nations.
It's not that usual to see B&W illustrations in magazines anymore but I managed to sell the idea to them. What I didn't tell the client, was the actual reason I picked this particular technique – I had a fever and this was the only technique that didn't require any strength…

I still have Green Day songs playing in my head and have a feeling they won't be leaving any time soon. Last night I saw the Berkeley Rep production of "American Idiot," a musical crafted from the songs of their album with the same title. Or as my... Read the rest of this post
Add a CommentWe went to see "Wicked" on Saturday. It was our second time to see it, we also saw it last year, but since they announced the Chicago production of "Wicked" will ring down its final curtain after its 1,500th performance at the Oriental Theatre in January, we decided to take some family along with us and get them hooked on the tale of the witches, Galinda and Elphaba. By the time the show
Last night, my wife and I took the "Behind the Emerald Curtain" behind-the-scenes tour of the musical, Wicked - The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz. We had seen the musical a couple of months ago, but for my birthday, I wanted to take the behind-the-scenes tour of this musical I have become so obsessed with.
I'm attracted to the character, Elphaba, a.k.a. The Wicked Witch of the West. I always have been, but Wicked adds layers and layers to her character that I couldn't have ever imagined. Is she Wicked, or is she just misunderstood? I'm very caught up in this wonderful story.
For an illustrator, Wicked is wicked cool! There's just so much for your eyes to see! The details that Susan Hilferty put into the costume designs are just mind-blowing. Behind-the-scenes, we got to see the buttons on the guards' coats...they have OZ on them. And yet, sitting in the audience, you'd never ever see that tiny detail.
We learned that Wicked was being considered as a movie, when a call went to the folks in Hollywood to say, There's music in this story! So the search for a screenwriter for Wicked ended and it became a hit musical.
Wicked is an amazing experience.
As an illustrator, I'd recommend this musical for anyone with an eye for detail. Put in sound-blocking earplugs and this musical is still amazing!
As a fan of theatre, I'd recommend this musical to everyone.
I'm begging my wife for tickets to see it one more time.
Read the book, go see the musical and tell Elphaba, I sent you.

Last summer when it was Mini-Me's *actual* birthday, the poor kid had chicken pox, and thus was denied any visitors at all, much less a party. She's been nagging me for quite a while (ok, something like six months) to actually arrange the make-up party. We finally agreed on taking two of her friends to see Wicked (she and I saw it last year, but that's the one she chose) and today was the day.
Before the show we went to this terrific place on the Upper West Side called Alice's Tea Cup for brunch. Yummy scones and smores and this fabulous warm gooey chocolate cake. With all the Alice in Wonderland references painted on the walls, it was a perfect setting for an UnBirthday Party.
Wicked was just as good as I remembered, and a good time was had by all. MiniMe said it was the Best Birthday Party Ever, is about as good as it gets from a tween who is increasily irritated by her mother. I wonder if it'll earn me a Good Mummy Award to balance out the zillions of Bad Mummy Awards currently pinned to my bulletin board.
bravo Ogait!
