How many children had Lady Macbeth? The great Shakespearean critic L. C. Knights asked this question in 1933, as part of an essay intended to put paid to scholarship that treated Shakespeare’s characters as real, living people, and not as fictional beings completely dependent upon, and bounded by, the creative works of which they were a part.
The biopic has really overstayed its welcome. We’ve come a long way since the halcyon days of Patton, but in recent years, the genre has become synonymous with “larger than life” mythologizing, with the same or similar beats being hit over and over again. Even last year, one need not look further than last year’s […]

At First Book, we spend our work hours getting new books to kids in need, and we spend our free time reading (naturally). But, on rare occasions, we do go out to the movies. And our favorite movies? Ones made from classic books, of course. (We are also fans of heart-warming sports movies, but that’s neither here nor there).
So we’re pretty excited to see the new Jane Eyre film this weekend. Romance! Tragedy! Dark manor houses upon the brooding moors! Dame Judi Dench? What’s not to love?
We’re especially excited to see the furniture and costumes in the movie. Partly because well-made period films from major movie houses always have great sets, but also because all of these amazing props and dresses will be on sale, March 15-19, at One Kings Lane. And, thanks to the generosity of our friends at One Kings Lane and Focus Features, all proceeds from those sales are going directly to First Book.
So check out the sale on One Kings Lane, where you can also register to win some amazing things – like a private screening of the movie for yourself and your friends. And you can consider picking up one of those rare items, knowing that every penny from that sale will go to get more brand-new books into the hands of kids that need them.
In 2009, Wasikowska starred in Alice in Wonderland. Fassbender will play the comic book villain, Magneto, in X-Men: First Class next year. Rumor has it Fassbender will also play a part in the upcoming Hobbit movies.
On Friday, news broke that Peter Jackson finally received the g0-ahead for his two-part adaptation of The Hobbit. Production could start as soon as February 2011.
Deadline Hollywoodhas the scoop: “Things must be getting close on The Hobbit, because casting buzz is getting strong in Hollywood. Word is Martin Freeman will soon be set to play Bilbo Baggins, that Jimmy Nesbitt has been offered a role and that Michael Fassbender is being pursued for another as is David Tennant. Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are expected to reprise Gandalf and Gollum.”
As you wait for the production, we recommend watching the English translation of a Finnish miniseries (embedded above) that adapted J. R. R. Tolkien’s work way back in 1993.
Michael Fassbender had 3, not 2 collaborations with Steve McQueen. “Hunger” is as compelling as “Shame” and “Twelve Years A Slave”.
…and this relates to comics,…how?
loved when Steve Jobs wrote Uncanny X-Men
Right you are Rahma, I’ll blame writing this up at 1 am for that brain fart.
