I’m glad I checked my comments spam filter today, because look what I almost missed! Sorry, Sherry; I don’t know why the filter zapped you. We’re big Semicolon fans here, even if my filter isn’t.
I wanted to tell you that I’m starting something new at Semicolon, and you’re certainly invited to join in along with any of your readers. It’s called Semicolon Author Celebration, and to start with I’m looking for posts about Charlotte Zolotow on this Thursday, her birthday.
For more information, click here.
Of course, today is Thursday, which means the Charlotte Zolotow post is already up!

I just don't use semicolons all that much, do you? I mean I use them for lengthy lists with numerous commas, but, really, that's about it. So, I wasn't surprised to find that my punctuation mark is the colon instead. (Quiz via Bookshelves of Doom.) So, yeah. I'm a little bossy and emphatic.
Speaking of punctuation marks...here are two great pieces on the semicolon:

And the evidence for the Gawker post: Jon Henley on the Semicolon for the Guardian. (Lots of writer opinions on the semicolon as well.)
What's your punctuation mark?

I'd have to guess the em dash, but I'll take the quiz and let you know.
Cute quiz! Apparently I'm a comma. I love the semicolon, though. I have to be careful not to overuse it when I write. I don't have a problem in short messages (e.g., blog comments), but when I really get going, I'm constantly tempted! It's so gentle compared to the period.
PJ: So? Let me know!!
Lisa: Yes...the gentle folk are drawn to that semicolon :)
And here I am, another semicolon fan, a comma as well. Did you seem my post on both? http://medinger.wordpress.com/2008/02/20/semicolons-and-commas-oh-my/#comments

Put me firmly in the "for" column; I love semicolons. (That's not a very good example of how to use one, but I do appreciate their subtle flexibility and ability to bring order to a long list. In fact, I could argue that anyone who clicked over via your links, cared enough to read both articles in their entirety, and savored every "for" and "against" argument has the love of logic and nuance that would mark them as a possible semi-colon supporter; however, I could be mistaken.)
Wow! Turns out I'm an exclamation point! Never saw that one coming!
I certainly ought to be a semicolon, don't you think? I'll check it out and see how accurate the test is.
I'm going to declare myself a semicolon prior to taking the quiz; I use them all the time and take great joy in teaching proper semicolon use to my students.
well I'm a colon too.
I also think that I should have said semicolon usage instead of use, but I am too mommy-brained to be sure or to even care very much. Alas.
Wanted to take the quiz - but I had to dash.

I'm an exclamation point! Yay!
Monica: I did read your posts via reader :) I'm going to add the links to my post now.
Sara: I LOVED the Guardian piece. The writers' comments were excellent.
Emily: !!!!!
Sherry: You certainly should be :) Oops, that should be: ;)
Suzanne: If it's any consolation, I would have put you squarely in the semicolon camp. You're just the gentle type.
Stephanie: Hah!
PJ: !!!
I love the semicolon, but apparently I'm doomed to be a comma as well. A mere comma in the sentence of life! How tragic!!!
Hi, Kelly!
Long time no talk. You have a great blog; well done! There, I used a semi-colon. :) It is, actually, one of my favourite punctuation marks.
I took the quiz, though, and it says that I am more of an exclamation mark person. Hmm, I wonder if that's true.
