Not feeling all that able to draw today. This is kind of what it looks like outside presently, minus the fox.

I’m trying to do some warm up drawings and messing with different styles and brushes, papers, etc.
This is a simple line-art drawing, digitally drawn, without working off a rough. I used Painter 11, with the paper set so it has some tooth. When I use a pencil, I usually use the “grainy cover pencil”, which will cover any colors used underneath the it’s layer, as well as pick up on the grainy texture of the paper. If you work digitally, you know you can control the amount of grain with some of your tools. Painter’s digital watercolors are underneath the line work. I like to use them quick and fast. I don’t like things to look tight, so I’m fighting that ALL the time when I work. And finally, I will sometimes double up the line work and/or color layers, depending on how bold I want things to be. In this case, I went for bold.
Uhm…Kinda a day late, though today is the day government offices, etc. are closed in Quebec. Celebrations were everywhere in the province yesterday. I’m using the occasion as a warm-up drawing, cartoon-style. Have a great Monday!
Something silly to draw about. : ) I do have a favorite Raisin Bran cereal, when I do buy the product: Skinners. They tout themselves to be the FIRST raisin bran. I prefer the brand because they don’t sugar-coat the raisins. Which I don’t understand in the first place. Why all the sugar all over the already sweet-enough raisin, Kelloggs, Post, etc.? What’s up with that..? But really (as you can see in my cartoon on the matter), just combining raisins with your favorite bran or plain cereal is much better for you. And that’s what I pretty much do.
I had myself come up with a quickie cartoon. The results….
Another warm up drawing before tackling the other stuff.
I know, I know. Fall has some beautiful aspects to it, what with the leaves changing color, etc. But I find it hard to enjoy the season as I know it’s only a prelude to a looong winter. Blah.
It’s one of those days. You know them. Days where you don’t have any media stimulation on at all (no radio, tv, music, twitter, etc.). And the clock on the wall, the ticking was too loud so it was removed. All I can hear are the leaves blowing in the breeze and a squirrel in the far background, fussing about something. A dog now barks in the distance. Sometimes you have to create your own peace.
I’ve been Beatles-obsessed the past month or so. Maybe it’s all the new Beatles products that have come out (The Beatles Rock Band gameplay, the remastering of their catalogue…) that’s got me interested in exploring them afresh. Also, with today’s internet you can easily explore The Beatles history, music, movies, etc. Mostly, though, I’ve been [...]
I’m working at getting into the studio earlier in the morning (verses mid-morning) so I can get more done. I’m hoping this will help me knock things off my ‘to-do’ list. And there is MUCH to do. Like little drawings like this ‘un.
It’s Thanksgiving today in Canada, in case you don’t already know that. : ) The above is quick, simple cartoon to celebrate the occasion; just for fun and a little warm up exercise. If only there really was some turkey (and all the fixings) around here to graze on!
One of several afternoon warm-up drawings, though I consider this finished for now. I enjoy doing line drawings when they’re not rigid.
I’ve been continuing to mess around with painting images rather than my usual colorized line work. It’s been fun and feels good for the most part. I’m just not sure what I’m going to do with these pieces or where they’re going. We shall see.
I’m experimenting, stepping away from the line work and using primarily paint (digital). This was done in Painter X with the digital watercolors.
I’m playing around with different tools here (Both pigs are done digitally, btw). Pig #1 is done with a dry ink brush and colorized with pastels and pencil and a bit of splattered ink. I like that the ink line is a little unpredicable, going from thin to thick, etc. It’s kinda tight but not [...]
I was doing random warm-up drawings this morning, this little girl being among them. Starting with a head, then a scarf around a neck, led to a fall spot.
I’m liking working with the pencil tool in Painter. I gravitate towards medium that helps me keep things looser.
I really need to do a lot of drawing. I mean, just drawing for drawing’s sake; playing around with line work, background and color schemes (as you see, above). There’s a little bit of a mental hump I have to get over, though, as I feel oddly anxious drawing something that’s NOT for a client. [...]
The Beatles’ music gets better with age doesn’t it? Amazing that they’re still so popular afetr all this time. You’ve really captured the Beatles look well! I think you’ve encapsulated all of them into one generic Beatle!x
Hi Paula–oh, how this image conjured up memories of my childhood. I grew up with four brothers. In the early to mid-60s, they would cut out and draw guitars and drums on flattened cardboard boxes. Then they would put on their little black Beatle wigs that mom bought at the drugstore. They’d invite all the girls from the neighborhood over and put on a “concert” in our basement by lip syncing the words to the songs from H.E.L.P. blaring on the phonograph behind them. And all the girls would scream. It was so much fun! Thanks for evoking that wonderful memory with your wonderful quick study…
Jess: Thanks! And I totally agree. They are one-of-a-kind, made distinguished because of their talent, time-place in history, and just sheer luck. I was too young when they were on the scene but glad I can appreciate them now.
I wasn’t too young… I grew up with them and still like ‘em. Sometimes you just need to hear some good old Beatles tunes! I really like that mesh/dot texture you are using… a new trick up your sleeve?
Love the way you captured an inner calm nature or love of music in the character. Hard to explain, but I can feel it in your character. Very nice.
Liz: How fun! I love that memory and thank you for sharing it with me/us!
Doog: Oh, you’re not THAT old, are ya?…Hee hee! Did you go to one of their concerts? Buy their albums?
Frank: Thank you! I think that wash really softens the characters, etc. up. I appreciate your comments!
