1. SDCC12: Bongo Announce A Coldplay Comic

By Steve Morris

We’re in it now, guys. With Heidi away at San Diego Comic-Con, Torsten has cut power to Stately Beat Manor’s security system and Todd’s neutralised the hefty guards. It’s time for us to kick our feet up on her coffee table and delve into all the news and buzz from SDCC as best we can, whilst drinking all her beer and inviting everyone round for a party later.

Mylo 1 SDCC Cover 1 SDCC12: Bongo Announce A Coldplay Comic

And everybody knows the best parties start off with Coldplay, right? Bongo Comics certainly seem to believe so, as they’ve announced a six-issue Mylo Xyloto comic book miniseries due next year, based on Coldplay’s album of the same unpronouncable name. Written by the screenwriter for Kung-Fu Panda and The Spongebob Squarepants movie Mark Osborne (and don’t you dare insult those two films in the comments section, they’re GREAT), the series will reveal that Mylo etc-yloto is a young man, on a quest. He is, and I quote:

a young Silencer on the front lines of a war against sound and color in the world of Silencia. Mylo discovers that the enemy he’s been trained to hate his whole life might not be the enemy after all.

The series may not be due out till next year, but Bongo have already completely issue #1, which they’ll be selling at SDCC this week in an exclusive edition also available via the band’s website.

Chris Martin has yet to comment on the series, as presumably he’s still busy trying to persuade Warren Ellis to make a comic out of Notes from my Kitchen Table.

Titles are arranged alphabetically by publisher, and the images and summaries come from the offical FCBD website.  My comments are in purple.

All 6th-grader Bill Stokes wants is to get through middle school unnoticed so he can go on to become a big-time pro video-gamer.  Then his mom comes home from her medical research volunteer job with a zombie virus.  Now Bill has to deal with skin problems and body chemistry changes that make puberty look like a walk in the park!  How’s he supposed to realize his dream when his life has become a festering, rotting, undead nightmare?
I read the first four pages… it doesn’t appeal to me.  It’s kind of interesting…his mother is a zombie, he’s sort of a zombie (he’s still got his human reasoning).  But this is just another variant in the “kid’s diary” genre, with spot illustrations, which are pretty good for a zombie kid!

3. New Logo Mania: Bongo gets new logo, new creative director; Matt Groening gets secret projects

Untitled New Logo Mania: Bongo gets new logo, new creative director; Matt Groening gets secret projects
Bongo is the successful comics publishing company that nobody knows about. Although it will celebrate its 17th anniversary this year, and has mastered the periodical-to-trade business model, and has been happily plugging along publishing essentially creator-driven comics for all that time….no one in the comics industry EVER talks about Bongo. Sure, publishing Simpsons comics seems like a no-brainer…but do you think the books would have lasted this long as a licensed title at DC or Marvel?

Well, now there have been some changes. And some new branding. It has a new logo to start with —three’s a trend! And long-time art director Nathan Kane has been promoted to Creative Director, replacing Bill Morrison, who, we’re told, has joined Simpsons creator (and Bongo owner) Matt Groening to work on new projects.

They’ve also released a 16-page insert for retailers to explain where the company is and where it’s going.

Bongo’s titles include:

SIMPSONS COMICS
FUTURAMA COMICS,
BART SIMPSON
SERGIO ARAGONES FUNNIES
BONGO ONE-SHOT WONDERS
SIMPSONS ILLUSTRATED
TREEHOUSE OF HORROR
SUMMER SHINDIG
WINTER WINDING
SIMPSONS SUPER SPECTACULAR

and distributes SPONGEBOB COMICS. With SERGIO ARAGONES FUNNIES, Bongo has gone back to publishing creator-owned comics…and they deserve lots of props for that.

Although long the silent star of the comics biz, we suspect you might just be hearing more about Bongo in the near future. If nothing else, when successful comics company are discussed—one with worldwide distribution models and a highly successful trade publishing program—Bongo should definitely be included.

Here’s the retailer marketing insert in total:
