26. Book Battle: Round 2 Series 5 WINNER!

Well, here it is battle fans. The moment you've been waiting for. It's time to announce the winner of the 2011 YA Bloggers Debut Book Battle. If you haven't had a chance to yet, take a peek at the Reader's Choice Awards. And then proceed to see who wins.

Bracket 24:
Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper VS. StarCrossed by Elizabeth C. Bunce
Judged by Emily from What Book Is That? and Amber of Amber's Teen Reads

VS.

After several months, lots of intense rounds of judging, it's come to the final bracket. An undefeated contest comes up against a highly acclaimed book that was eliminated early, but was granted a new chance at the winning spot in Series 4. So which book would win?

It certainly wasn't an easy a choice. Judge Emily had this to say about the two contenders:
"This was a tough choice, as in my opinion both books were excellent in their own ways. They're from two totally different genres- one is a realistic contemporary narrated by a young girl with cerebral palsy, and one is a fantasy adventure, narrated by a sneak-thief with magical abilities."
Judge Amber had this to add:
"In StarCrossed, Elizabeth C. Bunce created a whole world around the suppression of magic, sneak thieves and mayhem. Bunce created a world where silver jewelry can help hide magical powers from those who want to squash magic. She created a character named Digger who had to stop trying to hide and not take sides in the war against magic and determine where she stood.

While in Out of My Mind, Sharon M. Draper urged us to look beyond what we see to the person inside others. We met a girl named Melody who has Cerebral Palsy and is seemingly locked inside her own mind. With the help of an amazing aide, a neighbor and her parents, Melody receives the tools she needs to show everyone she is brighter than anyone gave her credit for."

28. Second Place Winner!

BuildMyselfWickhamFarms.jpg

Second place

Wickham Farms

by Nathan Murray, age 10
Penfield
Wickham Farms in Penfield is so close to us,
We can get there without a fuss.
I love your ice cream in a cone,
And picking a pumpkin you have grown.
In the corn maze I get lost,
Your chicken dinner is low cost.
On the jumping pillow I go up and down,
I never ever get a frown.
Animals, playground, tractor rides,
Batting cages, mini golf, then inside…
We look for the cute little mice,
And the people that work there are so nice.
Birthday parties, field trips from school,
On holidays you really rule.

The winners of Forgotten by Cat Patrick are...

40. Book Oopsies and a Winner

We've been talking about blips in our booksignings this week. Fortunately, I've had a good run with my signings, but I do have two stories to share.

First off, when my SORORITY 101 series debuted, I had a launch party in Boston with all of my work friends, a ton of writer friends, my agent, my sister, brother, nieces, and cousins. It was a huge blowout and I was hot, sweaty, nervous wreck. As I gave my speech toward the end of the night, I looked around the room to thank certain people. When I saw the person's face, I thanked them, and proceeded around the room. However, I pulled a Hilary Swank. I forgot to thank my then husband! It wasn't totally my fault because he was standing behind a pillar and I couldn't see him. I did correct the mistake, but I was horrendously embarassed!

Marley speaking

The other oopsies was when my book THE OTHER SIDE: A TEEN'S GUIDE TO GHOST HUNTING AND THE PARANORMAL was released, my co-authors (my now fiance, Patrick Burns, and Dave Schrader) and I were having our launch party at Dave's Darkness Radio event at the Queen Mary. Only problem was, the books arrived a week after the event. Talk about egg on the face! We had 200 people there who wanted to buy our books. So, our amazing publisher got the attendee list and addresses and mailed them all a FREE copy of it. That was incredibly generous!

Let's hope neither of those things happen again!

Last week, I put up a giveaway for C.C. Hunter's BORN AT MIDNIGHT...and the winner is...

*****TEPEE*****

Please e-mail me offline with your name and address at marley_gibson AT yahoo dot com. Congrats!

Next week...the launch of my new book GHOST HUNTRESS: THE DISCOVERY!

42. Winner + RT or Bust!

Last Wednesday, I offered up an advanced copy of the next GHOST HUNTRESS book, THE DISCOVERY. And the winner is...

Amanda Mora!

Congrats Amanda! Please e-mail me at marley_gibson AT yahoo dot com with your contact information so I can get it in the mail to you. A really cool thing...I'm blogging from 35,000 feet. Thanks to a nice $5 connection from Southwest, I'm able to wave down at you from the friendly skies as I'm headed out to Los Angeles for the RT Booklovers Conference. I'm really excited to see fellow Buzz girls, Tina, Tera, Heather, and Dona, and our former Buzz girl, Simone Elkeles and so many others. My agent, Deidre Knight, and I are doing a panel on how agents sell film rights to books. I'm participating in CLUB RT, giving away a fun ghost hunting basket, and, of course, I'll be participating in Teen Day!

As Tina and Tera mentioned in their posts, I'll be among the teen authors appearing at Teen Day at the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention on Saturday. Something cool is the teen authors will have their own rows, all together, for easy access. Then all of the YA gang will move into various activities like meets-and-greets, interesting talks, author readings, one-on-one "speed dates," and then all followed by a teen party. This is my first RT conference and I can't wait!

Come by and say hello!

46. PIF Query Winners and Some Book Love

Pay It Forward Query Winners

Okay so I am a sucker because I could not narrow it to 3.

So I have 5 queries that will move on to the next stage.

I made this decision based on the query, the premise, but mostly what I think Alyssa would like. I personally loved all 10 for different reasons.

The winners of the query contest are: (DRUM ROLL!)

Congrads! You win a query critique and move on to the final stage. Please email me ([email protected]) your most updated query and your FIRST THREE chapters. I will read them and choose the winner to pass on to Alyssa. At this stage it comes down to the writing and pacing for me. :)

Just like before, if the other five writers would like some feedback on their query - please feel free to email me and I will share my notes that may or may not help you.

49. Leeza Hernandez Wins at SCBWI Conference

New Jersey’s own Leeza Hernandez was the lucky winner of the Artist Showcase at the SCBWI Annual Winter Conference this past weekend.

Leeza says, “It came as a complete shock to me, especially because there were more than 200 talented children’s book illustrators in the show.”

As a winner, she’ll be given the opportunity to meet with some art directors at publishing houses in New York for a portfolio review. Leeza almost didn’t attend the conference this year, but now she’s glad she did! Illustrators were asked to submit one piece of work for the show—matted or framed—which then were displayed for invited industry professionals to view.

I attended the Illustrator Showcase, so Leeza should be very proud to be picked from the many talented artist who were part of the show.  And I know everyone who knows Leeza is very proud of her win, too.

CONGRATULATIONS – Leeza!  Take a minute to visit her website if you aren’t familiar with her work. www.leezaworks.com Leeza is the New Jersey SCBWI Illustrator Coordinator and the Art Director of our Magazine, Sprouts.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy
