26. Picture Book Topics

This week I’m participating in Donna’s July Challenge on her Word Wrangler Blog. I’m supposed to come up with 15 pitches for NEW books. I have 6 so far. It’s a great challenge, I think, to stimulate my imagination, my creativity--get the ole juices flowing. I think it’s working. But I need some seeds to germinate into ideas. So, Saturday I spent time browsing my local Barnes & Noble’s.

27. Precious In God's Sight

"Under his watchful eye, a tiny sprout grows to a lovely, fragrant flower, the drab cocoon brings forth the beautiful butterfly, and the Babe in the manger becomes the Prince of Peace! These miracles bring wonderment and awe to our hearts, warming our souls like rays of sun on a spring morning, reminding us of an eternal truth--that all things are precious in his sight."  (from

29. Part II : What IS a Christian fiction book or story?

Last week I said I am a Christian writer. Then I asked the question, is everything I write a "Christian" story?I’ve heard from other (published) authors in the Christian market that Christian publishers have an array of qualifiers to help them answer that question. Each house, each agency has its own parameters for dubbing a fiction manuscript acceptable  by that Christian publisher or not.The

30. A Few Free Critiques

I'd love to have a few free critiques! So, I'm posting this little poem with a question: If you were an editor at a children’s magazine what would you say about it? What suggestions would you make? (In your “spare” time?) ALL suggestions and comments welcomed! Come on, I have a thick skin. Thanks! Cat Watching She tippy-toes upon the tops Of fence

31. Part I: What IS a Christian fiction book or story?

I am a Christian writer. That lifestyle, that point of reference for life informs what I write and how I write. So, does that mean I write only "Christian" manuscripts? What, exactly, makes my writing “Christian” anyway? Do my manuscripts always talk about God, or Jesus, or church? Are all of my main characters Christians? Does every story have a Christian theme? And,

32. Holding My Head High

But You, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts up my head.   Psalm 3:3 (HCSB) You are my shield: Only in heaven will I know all that God has protected me from. You are my glory: Is my deepest want to want my life to reflect God’s glory? You are the One who lifts up my head: When I am too weary to lift my own head,  God lifts it for me. When I am

33. Nothing is Too Hard for God

Jeremiah 32:17 (HCSB) Ah, Lord God! You Yourself made the heavens and earth by Your great power and with Your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!” If draping the heavens over the earth isn’t too hard for God, why do I continue to think that providing for me, protecting me, and filling me is?

34. Blog Resurrection

After almost a year absent from the blogosphere I am resurrecting Encouraging Words for Writers. The format will be different, but the purpose will be the same. I will blend poetry, Scripture, photographs, quotes and my own musings to: Encourage you to write what God has put into your heart and life, Inform you and help you to grow as a writer, and Inspire you to cultivate the mindset of Christ

43. Book Review: The Fight of Our Lives

Another book review as I promised. The Fight of Our Lives: Knowing the Enemy, Speaking the Truth & Choosing to Win the War Against Radical Islam by William J. Bennett & Seth Leibsohn (Thomas Nelson, 2011) The Fight of Our Lives is a clearly written book. Bennett and Leibsohn dogmatically, repeatedly and unapologetically state the theme:”Lifting the veil and engaging the fight, as both a matter

45. Bye-Bye

Maintaining this blog has been a fun challenge for me in several ways: It has forced me to think about the things I am learning as a writer It has disciplined me to write concisely (most of the time) It has helped me to connect with other writers It has disciplined me to write even when I don't "feel like it" It has given me opportunities to encourage other people using their talents to glorify

46. Wake Up, Brain of Mine

What am I learning lately about writing? Sometimes I think my learning has stalled a bit. I'm picking up new information and new skills like I did three or four years ago. But then, I go back and read the things I wrote three or four years ago, and compare them to pieces I'm writing now, and I realize that I'm doing much better than I was. I'm refining the skills I've already learned. I'm

47. A Day Apart

Write2Ignite! has become a huge part of my life. I'm a business owner (I said I would NEVER do that!). I'm an entrepreneur! (Whatever that is.) And I'm responding to God's call on my life to be a writer, a teacher, a leader and an encourager. I can't think of a better way to "be" all of those things than Write2Ignite! With that in mind I'm happy to announce a new one-day Write2Ignite!event

48. HIS Glory!

I snapped these photos on a morning walk at The Center for New Beginnings. Psalm 72:18-19 May the LORD God, the god of Israel, be praised, who alone does wonders. May His glorious name be praised forever; the whole earth is filled with His glory.  [Holman Christian Study Bible] Proverbs 4:18 The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining
