This week I’m participating in Donna’s July Challenge on her Word Wrangler Blog. I’m supposed to come up with 15 pitches for NEW books. I have 6 so far. It’s a great challenge, I think, to stimulate my imagination, my creativity--get the ole juices flowing. I think it’s working. But I need some seeds to germinate into ideas. So, Saturday I spent time browsing my local Barnes & Noble’s.

"Under his watchful eye, a tiny sprout grows to a lovely, fragrant flower, the drab cocoon brings forth the beautiful butterfly, and the Babe in the manger becomes the Prince of Peace! These miracles bring wonderment and awe to our hearts, warming our souls like rays of sun on a spring morning, reminding us of an eternal truth--that all things are precious in his sight." (from

Last week I said I am a Christian writer. Then I asked the question, is everything I write a "Christian" story?I’ve heard from other (published) authors in the Christian market that Christian publishers have an array of qualifiers to help them answer that question. Each house, each agency has its own parameters for dubbing a fiction manuscript acceptable by that Christian publisher or not.The

I'd love to have a few free critiques! So, I'm posting this little poem with a question: If you were an editor at a children’s magazine what would you say about it? What suggestions would you make? (In your “spare” time?) ALL suggestions and comments welcomed! Come on, I have a thick skin. Thanks! Cat Watching She tippy-toes upon the tops Of fence

I am a Christian writer. That lifestyle, that point of reference for life informs what I write and how I write. So, does that mean I write only "Christian" manuscripts? What, exactly, makes my writing “Christian” anyway? Do my manuscripts always talk about God, or Jesus, or church? Are all of my main characters Christians? Does every story have a Christian theme? And,

But You, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts up my head. Psalm 3:3 (HCSB) You are my shield: Only in heaven will I know all that God has protected me from. You are my glory: Is my deepest want to want my life to reflect God’s glory? You are the One who lifts up my head: When I am too weary to lift my own head, God lifts it for me. When I am

Jeremiah 32:17 (HCSB) Ah, Lord God! You Yourself made the heavens and earth by Your great power and with Your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for You!” If draping the heavens over the earth isn’t too hard for God, why do I continue to think that providing for me, protecting me, and filling me is?

After almost a year absent from the blogosphere I am resurrecting Encouraging Words for Writers. The format will be different, but the purpose will be the same. I will blend poetry, Scripture, photographs, quotes and my own musings to: Encourage you to write what God has put into your heart and life, Inform you and help you to grow as a writer, and Inspire you to cultivate the mindset of Christ

Maintaining this blog has been a fun challenge for me in several ways: It has forced me to think about the things I am learning as a writer It has disciplined me to write concisely (most of the time) It has helped me to connect with other writers It has disciplined me to write even when I don't "feel like it" It has given me opportunities to encourage other people using their talents to glorify

What am I learning lately about writing? Sometimes I think my learning has stalled a bit. I'm picking up new information and new skills like I did three or four years ago. But then, I go back and read the things I wrote three or four years ago, and compare them to pieces I'm writing now, and I realize that I'm doing much better than I was. I'm refining the skills I've already learned. I'm

Write2Ignite! has become a huge part of my life. I'm a business owner (I said I would NEVER do that!). I'm an entrepreneur! (Whatever that is.) And I'm responding to God's call on my life to be a writer, a teacher, a leader and an encourager. I can't think of a better way to "be" all of those things than Write2Ignite! I was NOT disappointed with the Southern Breeze Poetry Retreat last weekend! Just as I had hoped it was an enriching experience in many ways.Rebecca Kai Dotlich was fantastic...stupendous...and a really nice lady, too. The weekend was a big success for me. Why? Jean,<br />Good to hear that you are having so much fun with Donna's challenge. Browsing at a book store for ideas--good way to brainstorm.<br /><br />Linda Andersen
Really fascinating research! I loved reading about what you found out there. It's so time consuming to do this sort of "inventory" and yet it is truly revealing.<br /><br />Thanks for putting forth that effort and for sharing.<br /><br />Totally baffling to me about the princess thing. My granddaughter had a non-fiction picture book for older readers about real life princesses.
I think your Princess Olivia story tops them all! But now I know what you were put to when you were scouring the B&N shelves on Saturday. <br />Go for the alien-robot idea. It'll take you and your imagination to new heights!!
Thanks for sharing your market research. Really great information to have for my writing students. And moi! ;o)
Thanks for the comment, Linda. It's amazing how MANY children's books are nonfiction now. Every topic you can imagine. And on every "reading" level.<br /><br />Blessings,<br />Jean
Joyce,<br /><br />Little girls will ALWAYS love princesses and their stories, I guess. But all that pink made my thoughts wander toward Pepto-Bismal!<br /><br />Jean
Carol - <br /><br />So, you like my alien-robots, huh? So does my 7 year old grandson. He told me Tuesday to finish the story. "You can do it, Meme.I KNOW you can!"<br /><br />My own little cheerleader!<br />Jean
Thanks, Clara for leaving a comment. I'm glad the info is helpful.<br /><br />May I add your blog to my Writers' Resources page?<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Jean
Thanks for the post. I had been looking for something related and found your web site in the process.I will definitely be back for more.
heehee... I like your new idea! How are your pitches coming along?
Thanks, Donna.<br /><br />I guess I'd better do a little more "in the field" research on robots and aliens with my resident expert (he's 7 years old.)<br /><br />Jean
Thank you, SS. I'm glad you found me. Drop in anytime!<br /><br />Blessings,<br />Jean
