1. My DIY Sock Doll Tutorial

I've been making sock dolls since 2012.
I created this tutorial for a friend that bought
a bunch from me but wanted to learn to make
her own! This is the style of doll she wanted.
You can make any theme you want with these instructions.
You can see some of my other design under
my Labels on the right hand side...
look for Sock Doll tag!

So get out that bag of mis-matched socks & have some fun!

2. Vintage Photo Slide Lampshade & Instructions

Photo Slide Lamp-with light off

This is a project that I have always wanted to make and it is so easy to do yourself. Here is my list of supplies and photos of my process!

I used a travel theme!

What you need:
-Wire Lampshade Frame, ... this one is a custom UNO Fitter,
Ring Diameter=9 inch, Fitter Drop 6 inch
           From: ReplacementLampShades.com
*If I were to make another, I would order the Fitter Drop to be 8 or 9 inch instead of 6 inch. That would make the bulb sit more in the middle of the shade.

-80 to 100 (Square Outer Edge) Photo Slides,
This shade is made with slides held in Landscape direction.
There is 14 slides in a row and 6 rows

-10mm Jump Rings, same metal color as the fitter frame.
This shade used 504 jump rings.

-Hole Punch, 1/16 inch

-Pliers, to open & close jump rings

-Clothes pins, to hold slide rows

-Modern Candle Stick Lamp, 20 inch tall. This one came from Walmart, $25.00

It was great finding vintage family slides in carousel trays!

The light bulb holds the UNO Fitter frame in place.

An old slide viewer made it easier to construct each row.

Use an undesirable slide and create an even template. Mark each slide and punch holes.  2 holes per corner creates a smooth shade and makes a nice design when lit.

Create long rows then attach rows together. Clothes pins help to hold rows in place while threading the jump rings.

When all the rows are finished, Fold so short edges are together, then attach jump rings to form a barrel shape

Put the barrel of slides over the Fitter Frame to form the Shade. Have a helper hold the top edge to the frame and attach jump rings by  frame legs 1st. Continue filling in all the holes in between to secure.

Use a low watt bulb

Great for a Dorm Room! My son Loves it!!!

3. Lilla Rogers Studio School To Build My Portfolio

Lilla Rogers’ Make Art That Sells e-course is the best thing I have done for myself and my creative process!

Since 2007, I found out about  Art Licensing and started submitting  to art agents, asking for a critique or feedback so I could see if my work would fit in this industry. I mostly never heard from them or got the standard response of... thanks but you work is not what we are looking for at this time. I paid for someone to review my portfolio, I sent them a check and copies of my art and they sent me a list of agents to email... and I never heard from this "Expert" again either.
Well... what are agents looking for and how do I make my work fit?!?  I flew to NYC, attended Surtex and paid extra for the seminars, only to be told... I should just go home and know the my family loves me so much that they couldn't bare to tell me the truth... that I don't have any talent and I shouldn't be at the conference. I never believed that, but knew my work wasn't in the right form. So I kept looking for the avenue for me.
I started following Lilla's agency through her newsletter and decided to sign up for her second round of classes when registration opened this year in January. I am so happy that I found her and all my new artist friends!
The class is now in its 3rd week and we (some 200+ students from all over the world) have tackled Bolt Fabric with Kitchen designs and Home Decor with dinnerware using a summer succulent theme! This week is Children's Picture Books with a Fox character. You will have to stay turned because I am so excited about this adventure... finally getting my money's worth and my questions answered!
I know this is where I belong and I will be able to sell my work! The supportive community is wonderful and even though I haven't spoken to Lilla personally, I can see what to do and where to fit my art by the information and advice she give during the class! I'm on my way and will soon have the career I always wanted!!!

5. Shot Glass Wedding Favors for the Manly Guests!

For the "S" wedding that I planned last year, the bride and groom wanted custom favors at the reception for all the male guest. We found these great straight sided shot  glasses and had them etched by a local crafts-person. The bride and I attended the etching session and got to experience the process. My daughter used the same idea and we created a poem to stand up in the shot glass:
Cheers!
Take a shot !
Chris & Hanna tied the knot !
This Thank You Glass is yours to own,
Don' forget to take it home !
So eat, drink, be merry and send them good wishes,,,
Add lots of love & kisses for the new Mr. & Mrs !

6. A New Year & Time to "Make Art That Sells"!!!

I'm Registered!
It has been a while since I decided to look into surface design art and try to find an agent to sell my work. I attended Surtex in NYC in 2007 and I quickly found that the advice that I paid for before going, was not so good. I went home after going to workshops but still not sure of where to start and leery about approaching other agents. I have been reading, watching the blogs, following groups and Facebook for the right lead for me since that trip. Now that I have read many reviews I am attempting --- again--- to enter the art licensing market. So, Cheers & good luck to me... I have signed up for the Lilla Rogers Studio School, MATTS A & B, Make Art That Sells! I am Very excited to ready develop my art so I have the confidence to approach anyone in this industry. I want to be the best I can be! Please stay tuned for when I start the course in March!

16. Creative Mandalas

man•da•la n : Any of various ritualistic geometric designs symbolic of the universe, used in Hinduism and Buddhism as an aid to meditation. — Dictionary.com
According to Creativity-Portal, "The mandala may traditionally be used as a spiritual tool for meditation, but it can also be treated as a contemplative work of art. Artists of all kinds are intrigued by the endless creative possibilities that exist in these sacred circles, the intricate design work that is often based on the step-and-repeat principle, center, and symmetry."

17. Crafty Chica Get Motivated! Workshop

I was thrilled to find this summer workshop by artist and author, Kathy Cano-Murillo, The Crafty Chica. She shares exclusive lesson plans on business, crafts and writing.
One of the best parts of this class is the price. I haven't been working as much so the $23.00 really caught my eye.

I have been following Kathy for I while and I love her vibrant style. The class encourages students shake up life and apply her creative tips to find new ways to jump the hurtles standing in the way of your completing daily chores, exploring new directions and working on your passion.

The first video lesson talked about shaking up the  snowglobe of your life. I decided, since I am very visual, I will do a journal page for each tip that helps me to illustrate what I want to accomplish. Here is the page I started with and the photoshopped version where I added glitter!

If you want to join the class, come on over to the

18. Tiddliwinks Raspberry Garden: Inspiration for Hand Painting in Nursery

This nursery decor was so easy using the Target Tiddiwinks bedding set.
It was effortless to create freehand designs using Plaid Folk Art Enamel Paint
and Mod Podge. The clock, a nursing essential, is a wooden plate with a
simple clock works from the craft store. The dresser is from the thrift store, then
spray painted white. Each draw is painted with a different design to coordinate
with the theme.

The pink background is regular Folk Art Paint and Mod Podge
was used as a top coat after all the designs were applied.

21. Sock Doll Obsession

My latest obsession, Sock Dolls . . . started when I was looking for a soft doll
for my daughter. She was pregnant and expecting a sweet girl! I wanted to get her
1st doll for the nursery. I looked into Waldorf dolls and other stuffies.
The dolls in the store had faces that I didn't like, ...   with the words "my 1st Doll"
printed on their clothes. I like the simple German soft dolls on the
internet the best, but they were pricey. Once I discovered sock dolls on Etsy,
I knew I would have to make it myself! Here is one of my creations using a
lone ranger from my son's childhood soccer days!
Instead of stitching the face ... I painted it!
Hope you like!

23. Vintage Phone

I have seen some interesting vintage phones on Etsy. I have a "Sculptura", or more commonly known as the Donut Phone from the 1970's in my bedroom. When I spotted these slimline phones on the clearance rack, I felt inspired to embellish some of my own!   The "Reservation Line" is a white phone decoupaged yellow by using the yellow pages of the phone book. The Poodle is my illustration and it is finished with pink rhinestone trim. The "Hello" phone is also white but covered with gold swirl tissue paper. Vintage phone silhouettes and "hello" in different languages decorate the hand set. Finally, rhinestone trim adds the last touch! I am still working a black phone cover in white pages! It says "Call Your Mother"!!! Hope you like!
