1. What's Behind a Door?

Perhaps a good neighbor, ready to help...

Whenever I need an exotic dose of color, pattern, or just a glimpse into a completely different way of life from here in North America, I visit Elizabeth's blog, The House in Marrakesh. (I wish I could smell the scents and feel the warm air through my computer, but that part is left to imagination...)

On Monday Elizabeth posted a collection of her door photographs-- a post which inspired a lot of interest in doors-- their design, their metaphors, their possibilities.

So next Wednesday, for fun, she's decided to have a "Door Day" theme. Post a picture of your favorite door, or do a drawing, or write something-- whatever inspires you. And maybe drop her a note to let her know. Everyone can play!

2. Miracle Wimp

Erik P. Kraft Little, Brown 2007 This is the story of Tom Mayo, nickname Miracle Wimp. Sixteen years old, further down on the pecking order, working his way through the vicissitudes of social life in high school. Should have been in Computer Animation, wound up in wood shop. Where is this story going? Good question. Page by page there's a new vignettes, each no longer than a page or two,

3. Nerdfighters: Musical Videos

Are you watching wynflete's winsome and heart warming Nerd Fighter: Australia videos featuring John and Hank Green's secret niece and nephew, Natalie and Calvin? Debbie is so creative. Her videos sneak up on you, take your hand and make you want to go skipping down the street.

She took John Green's Nerdfighter song and embellished it to become: "Nerdfighter Live." My family falls into almost every category of nerdfighter she (and John) thought of. Also, do not miss Nerdfighter Storytime.

...and thanks to Arthur Slade, I've discovered a new (to me) musical group, Arrogant Worms. Their song "It's Great to be a Nerd" also tracks our entwood rather precisely.

4. Modern, Cool Nerd

Kelly at Big A little a was fearful this was a time waster. Not so. An important task awaits.

I am a Modern Cool Nerd!! I am sure this question tipped the balance:

Do you have any themed decoration in your home/office other than color/material coordination? (Disney, frogs, unicorns, Star Wars, etc.)

Have I ever mentioned our Lord of the Rings room?
People who come to the front door jump when I open the door and they see Argorn looming over my shoulder.

After you figure out your Nerd level, click over to Little Willow. She has an assignment for us Nerd Fighters.

Your Score: Modern, Cool Nerd

73 % Nerd, 65% Geek, 47% Dork

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.

A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.

A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

5. Another Tuesday timewaster

This one comes from Michele of Scholar's Blog. Nerd vs. Geek came up in a comments thread, and Michele explained the difference and pointed to a test that determines which you are. I always knew I was a nerdish book girl and not much of a geek. I mean, I like technology and whatnot, but I'm not obsessed by it. What disturbed me was my high dork quotient. Here are my scores:

95 % Nerd, 30% Geek, 52% Dork

Here's what the test-makers offered me in return: "You scored better than half in Nerd and Dork, earning you the coveted title of: Tri-Lamb Material." Yikes!

Take the test.
