Tradd Moore broke into the comics scene with the indy series The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, and it’s sequel The Legend of Luther Strode with writer Justin Jordan. His distinct, dynamic style, and liberal use of squash & stretch with his characters has quickly propelled Tradd Moore to the top of the mainstream comics world. He graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010, and jumped right into illustrating comics after that.

Today, Tradd Moore has a bonafide hit on his hands with his work on the new, revamped Ghost Rider with writer/artist Felipe Smith for Marvel Comics. He also provides cover art for other Marvel books, like Secret Avengers, and Deadpool. When he can find the time, he continues to work on independent comics like the new Image series Zero.

You can see more artwork, and follow Tradd Moore on his blog.

2. Marvel Reaches Settlements with Gary Friedrich, Bob Layton

It appears that Marvel have offered Ghost Rider creator Gary Friedrich a settlement, thus ending the lengthy case which had previously bankrupted the veteran writer. The details of the settlement have not been offered to the public, but Friedrich’s attorney has informed a federal New York judge that the case can now be dismissed.

Hopefully this is good news for Friedrich, whose battle for rights over the Ghost Rider came to a head in 2007, when the first movie was released. There was sniping on both sides, with Friedrich suing Marvel and then  Marvel counter-suing Freidrich and, well, let Jeff Trexler explain it all in more detail.

Interestingly enough, however, writer Bob Layton – best known for his work on Iron Man, aspects of which were reflected in the subsequent film releases – has also taken to Twitter to announce that Marvel have also made a settlement with HIM over a character issue. Referencing David Michelinie in his tweet, this almost certainly refers to the ‘Demon in a Bottle’ storyline he wrote.

I wonder if we’ll see other creators revealing settlements over the next few weeks. It looks like some new policy might have come in, and hopefully it’s one which will give all creators the best possible deal.

3. Little studio snaps

My studio, it has to be said, is full of many things - it is my creative nest, where I can surround myself with the treasures I have found and been given. Although I may not use many of them from day to day, they inspire and console me. Many tokens from blog and non-bloggy friends...spot the Lily Moon card from my friend Maya -

(for detailed notes, please go to the Flickr image)

The old year ended with the little people in 'Cat's Cradle' journeying far away to their first job. It is always a wrench to know I will probably never see most of my paintings again, but good to know that they are watching over someone, somewhere.

The new year started with one of
Rima's beautiful calendars. I cannot think of a nicer way of getting through the year - she still has one or two left I think, so if you hurry...

Entering January with some gorgeous letter blocks, with huge thanks to fellow illustrator Paula for her thoughtful gift...

...and my triple good luck charm, to keep bad things away from me this year, especially timewasters, as I had enough of them in 2007. White china heart from Tara, rosehip heart from Higgledy Piggledy, textile/embroidery heart from Border Tart - thank you my dears - I defy anything truly bad to happen with the combined love of these three friends.

A big red hand to point the way bravely forward to 2008 - there is something very commanding about this stern indicator. It arrived unexpectedly in the post this week, mysteriously unsigned...for a few minutes I felt like my all time hero, Tintin, receiving an anonymous signal summoning him to a new, exotic adventure. But then I remembered kind Alan Brignull of the Hedgehog Press, and his lovely picture on Flickr which I had fav'd. Thank you so much!

I am under the weather and feeling like this at the moment -

So I am going to retire for a few days, and bury myself in my sketchbook, as I seem to have got my drawing mojo back at last. Have a good weekend everyone!

4. Skip Monkeys

So how did this...

...lead to this..

...and these...

...this...

...and even this?

Later. Having left the Hovel and it's various feline/vegetable inhabitants with a capable cottage-sitter, we are packing our bags and biking up to the Lake District for a few days jolly camping. So the web cam will be even more boring than watching me clean metal type with a toothbrush (what, you mean you missed that? Worthy of an Oscar). I promise not to return with any more - stuff. Apart from the odd drawing of cows. Really.

PS - If you cannot contain your curiosity, there is a full account of the Great Book Rescue here at Paula's Place
