“Animated cinema is the demiurgic art par excellence: matter comes to life and is transformed in the hands and imaginations of the creators. They, more than anybody, know about the secret life of objects.” This description, comes from the exhibition “Metamorphosis: Fantasy Visions in Starewitch, Švankmajer and the Quay Brothers,” now playing at the Centre de Cultura Contemporanea (CCCB) in Barcelona, Spain, and it's a good summary of the work of these four visionary animators.

Here’s one of my favourite animated shorts, the delightfully unsettling Breakfast from the great surrealist Czech animator Jan Svankmajer. The piece is one third of a trilogy, also including Lunch, and the not-so-safe-for-work Dinner.
I’ve loved Svankmajer’s work since accidentally stumbling upon his creepy version of Alice in Wonderland on TV as a child. The ensuing nightmares made sure I remembered his work well into adulthood.
There was wonderful exhibition of Svankmajer’s puppets, properties and scenes here in Plzen (Pilsen) a couple year ago. I love also his sketches and graphics. His wife Eva created brilliant paintings.
