1. Largest earthquake drill in U.S. history

On 10/20/11, Guam held the Great Guam ShakeOut, the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history. I just so happened to be on the island at the time, and just so happened to film it, and just so happened to get permission to post it here:

It called to mind one of my all-time favorite magazine covers, from 1995, though the location it references is far from Guam:

2. My PSA for PBS Guam

I talked extra slowly because they told me to. I didn't smile because they didn't tell me to. And upon seeing this finished cut, I wish I had talked slightly faster and flashed teeth more.

But overall, it was fun and I am pleased, especially with the zooming-backwards-through-bookshelves effect, which was not a typhoon (common in those parts) but rather just some movie magic.

3. Guam Stripes

Okay, so I don't normally read it. But hey--when you're part of the front-page feature article, you check it out.

Guam Stripes" writer Mary Parker wrote about writers in this part of the world. And of course, since I am "Saipanwriter" she contacted me. I put her in touch with Joe Race and Angie Wheat, too. Time was short, so I missed out on hooking her up with other writers (and there are plenty), but still, it's nice to see she got Saipan into the mix.

4. 280.. Interesting historical note

So I'm researching for my Nanowrimo novel. And found this--on October 7, 1902, Guam was rocked by more than 180 earthquake shocks! Reported in New Zealand news.

[My code isn't working so I'm having trouble linking.]

It's from the Wanganui Herald, Volume XXXVI, Issue 10768, 8 October 1902, Page 3 (try this and put in Guam earthquake for your search term).

Not relevant for the time period I'm hoping to write about, but a bit interesting.
