See more…

amitabh bachchan to play superhero cartoon in tv series: :

Read more…

2. The Hardy Boys Grow Up: The Hardy Boys Mysteries Season 3 Review

Are there any mystery fans out there who haven’t read at least one Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys mystery? Dating back to 1927, The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries have been the gateway drugs for generations of mystery junkies and their influence can be felt in a wide range of other teen and children’s series ranging from Scooby Doo to Veronica Mars and Supernatural. Yet, amazingly, none of the various attempts to adapt these series directly for film or television have ever been all that successful. That is, with the exception of the late 1970’s series The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries starring Pamela Sue Martin (and later Janet Louise Johnson) as Nancy and Parker Stevenson and pop singer Shaun Cassidy (half-brother of David and uncle of Katie) as Frank and Joe Hardy.

The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries started off as a weekly series that alternated episodes featuring the Hardy Boys with those featuring Nancy Drew, but in Season Two the format was changed to include cross-over episodes (such as The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Meet Dracula) with the three detectives working together for the first time ever. It managed to remain true enough to the original novels (in particular, maintaining the supernatural-themed mysteries that made the books so much fun), while updating a few details here and there to appeal to the audiences of the time (such as giving Shaun Cassidy ample opportunities to sing). However, due to the fact that the Hardy Boys developed a bigger following than Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boy eventually became the main characters of the series and Nancy a supporting character. Which brings us to Season Three, the primary focus of this review.

In the third season, Nancy was written out completely and the show retitled The Hardy Boys Mysteries, although a better title might have been The Hardy Men. In this season, Frank and Joe, having presumably graduated from college, take up jobs with the Justice Department and the Scooby Doo-esque mysteries of the first two seasons are suddenly replaced with more serious fare, such as Joe tracking down the hit and run driver who killed his fiancé. Cassidy and Stevenson had some great chemistry going between them that made for a brotherly bond as convincing and likeable as that of Dean and Sam Winchester, and that’s still present. However, all the fun has been sucked from the series, rendering it indistinguishable from every other mystery show of the time. Cassidy isn’t even given the opportunity to sing – quite surprising, considering that one episode centres on the Hardys working with singer David Gates and his band Bread to find a Russian girl who has defected to the US. Needless to say, the changes to the series didn’t go down well with fans and after ten episodes, the show was finally cancelled.

The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries is essential viewing for any fans of the books, past or present, but only the first two seasons. After that, save your time and money and switch to watching the similar, but much better, Supernatural and Veronica Mars instead.

Verdict: A disappointing ending to an otherwise entertaining series. For fans only.

4. National Train Day - May 7th & New Dinosaur Train Episode

The garage sale preparation has kept me far busier than I expected. Plus, I'm expecting company this weekend for Mother's Day. (And just in case you don't think that is enough to keep me busy, this week I babysat for my friend's sons, attended a Mother's Day tea party, and my husband was away on a business trip the past three days.) I will resume my normal posting schedule soon, I promise!

Here's another holiday to squeeze in before Mother's Day -- have you heard about National Train Day? It's on May 7th this year. There are all sorts of train related events taking place and Amtrak is celebrating 40 years.

The Jim Henson Company informed me about the special train day, and I thought I'd quickly let you know about their newest Dinosaur Train episode. Tomorrow, Friday, May 6th, Dinosaur Train celebrates National Train Day with two new train-themed segments: "Junior Conductor" and "Troodon Train Day." Some PBS stations are even sponsoring special train events! Check your local listings for air time and special event information. Here's the episode info from the press release:

In “Junior Conductor Jamboree,” Buddy and his family ride the Dinosaur Train from one end of the line to the other and visit all three time periods--from the Cretaceous, through the Jurassic, to the Triassic. In “Troodon Train Day,” the Pteranodon family rides to Troodon Town to celebrate Troodon Train Day, where the main event is a concert by King Cryolophosaurus, giving his first performance in years!
The main reason my son loves Dinosaur Train is because of the trains! He's not as much of a dinosaur fan, but he seems to learn plenty about paleontology from the show while looking for the train appearances. Thanks to PBS he had a chance to watch a screener of the new episode. Unfortunately I haven't had time to watch it yet so no review this time.

And, be sure to take a look at the Dinosaur Train website this month. There's a new train-themed homepage, fun train printables, and an "All Aboard" online game.

Thanks to The Jim Henson Company for sending us a review screener DVD. (View my full disclosure statement for more information about my reviews.)

5. The Cat in the Hat - rainy day art for stART

Another science TV series will debut on PBS next week - The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That. I can honestly say that I'm pretty excited about this new addition to children's programming because there is a bevy of related books already available for kids to read. Inspired by the Random House Dr. Seuss Learning Library book series (and of course the original Dr. Seuss book, The Cat in the Hat), this animated TV series hopefully will send a few kids to the library to explore those science books and maybe even pick up a few more along the way.

According to the press release about the series, "THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! was created in response to recent findings that children graduating from kindergarten are less prepared to learn about science than about other subjects. The series supports young children’s science learning by introducing scientific inquiry skills, teaching core science concepts and vocabulary, and preparing preschoolers for kindergarten and first grade science curriculum — all in whimsical style." Sounds like the perfect show for my kids. We're planning to start incorporating more science related projects into our home activities (by participating in Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom) so time will tell if this new show will be a good complimentary resource.

While we haven't read any of The Cat in the Hat science books, my daughter does enjoy the original The Cat in the Hat book. She even decided to check out the sequel, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back from the library this week all by herself. A couple months ago she attended a day camp and on one rainy day they participated in The Cat in the Hat themed activities. Since I hadn't prepared a stART craft this week, I thought I'd post her rainy day drawing. The book does make the perfect rainy day read!

As shown by her artwork, my daughter would like to play ball if the Cat in the Hat came over to play on a rainy day. Let's hope he doesn't visit any time soon. I don't encourage ball playing inside the home, especially with a character like the Cat!

6. "Get Ready For Kindergarten Month" with Dinosaur Train - GIVEAWAY

We're nearly finished filling my daughter's backpack with all the supplies she'll need for kindergarten. (The last item we need to find is a pack of feathers. Wonder what they'll use that for?) For the most part, I'm confident she's prepared. She can write her name, knows all her letters and numbers, and is just starting to read on her own.

Choo! Choo! Chomp! Even though I coordinate our school's science fair, science is a subject that we haven't spent a lot of time on yet at home. However, my daughter has learned a few things through watching shows like The Jim Henson Company's Dinosaur Train on PBS. The show encourages basic scientific thinking and skills as well as discussing various dinosaurs, life science, natural history and paleontology. Both my kids like watching Buddy the Tyrannosaurus Rex travel on the dinosaur train with his adoptive Pteranodon family. Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous - I can barely say those words but thanks to the show my children can easily recite them along with spouting out other interesting dinosaur facts.

The PBS website also contains a lot of wonderful content useful in helping to prepare pre-schoolers for school. Several fun scientific activities can be found on the DINOSAUR TRAIN website for parents and teachers http://www.pbs.org/parents/dinosaurtrain/activities/ or http://www.pbs.org/teachers/dinosaurtrain/lessonplans/. Here are a few but make sure to click on the links above for more:

Several new DINOSAUR TRAIN themed products are hitting the shelves this fall, including a few children's books! Here is a preview of a few of the new items available for purchase at major retailers (product descriptions from publishers/manufacturers):

7. JellyTelly - Christian Online TV series for kids

A couple weeks ago, while reading a post on the wonderful Bookie Woogie blog, I learned about JellyTelly. JellyTelly is an online Christian TV series by VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer. Kids learn about the Bible by watching the free daily shows. The short segments feature cartoons, puppets and real-life characters. Focus on the Family partners with Vischer on the show. While the daily shows are free for all to watch, subscribers can access all the content on the site. Here's a clip from the show.

There's a verse of the week, episodes like the one above where kids can learn about books of the Bible, JellyTelly jokes and a silly Sunday School lady. My daughter likes to watch the show, and I highly recommend it as a useful and entertaining resource for Christian families.

This month Tyndale House Publishers released a DVD video series called What's In The Bible? Many of the JellyTelly characters appear in the DVDs. We haven't had a chance to watch them yet, but I think that they sound like a wonderful way to learn about the Bible at home.

Have you watched JellyTelly or the new DVD series? What did you think?

8. Busytown Mysteries series on CBS / Richard Scarry books

“I’m not interested in creating a book that is read once and then placed on the shelf and forgotten. I am very happy when people write that they have worn out my books, or that they are held together by Scotch tape. I consider that the ultimate compliment.” - Richard Scarry

Richard Scarry's books get plenty of attention in our home. Let's just say we have one of those taped together books of his, well loved and read often. See the photo to the right-case in point! Every time the kids and I read one of his books we discover something new. Scarry's books contain so much detail and the his animal character illustrations are darling. Our favorites include Huckle Cat, Sally Cat, Lowly Worm and, of course, that sneaky Goldbug. We never get tired of searching for Goldbug.

The books have been translated into 30 languages over the last 40 years and over 150 million copies have been sold. Now, kids can watch their favorite characters in the new TV series Busytown Mysteries. The series, produced by Cookie Jar Entertainment, just starting airing on weekends on CBS. (Check here for local air times.) Huckle Cat and Lowly Worm, along with other friends try to solve mysteries in Busytown. They search for clues, ask the questions and use their reasoning skills - who, what, when, where, why, how? The episodes feature 2-D animation and the characters look like they've walked off the pages of Scarry's books.

Thanks to One2One network we received two episodes to review:
"The Falling Fruit Mystery" - Huckle and friends try to figure out why the cherries have fallen down from farmer Patrick's tree.
"The Dragon Hunters" - There are reports of a fire-breathing dragon in Busytown. Huckle and friends investigate to find out the truth."

As soon as I started playing the episodes, my preschool daughter excitedly exclaimed, "Hey, I have those books!" She pointed out Goldbug and Lowly Worm and a few of her other favorite characters. She watched both episodes all the way through and then decided that she wanted to solve mysteries, too. The series is a huge hit with her and we are planning to look for it tomorrow morning on our local CBS station.

We also took some time to check out the interactive Busytown Mysteries website at http://www.busytownmysteries.com. Kids can choose their favorite character, pick a Busytown car and travel around Busytown visiting the countryside, wharf, park and downtown. My daughter'

9. Fawlty Towers: The Complete Collection Remastered - DVD Giveaway

Quite a few years ago, before the kids were born, our neighbors hosted a Halloween costume party for the adults in the neighborhood. We always had fun trying to decide what kind of costume to wear. Unfortunately we moved from the neighborhood and haven't been to many Halloween parties since (besides the ones for our kids.) If we were attending this year, I think we might have went with a "Fawlty Towers" theme just so we could enter the Fawlty Towers Lookalike Contest on Facebook. My husband would make a good Basil Fawlty. The Grand Prize includes a Signed John Cleese Photo, Signed Fawlty Towers DVD, Fawlty Towers embroidered white terry-cloth bathrobe, Fawlty Towers story of Britain’s Favorite Sitcom book and Fawlty Towers corgi toy car.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the series, BBC Warner just released a Fawlty Towers remastered DVD set on October 20th. Now I've written about what the kids and I like on my blog but haven't mentioned a whole lot about my husband's favorites. He's been a Monty Python fan ever since I've known him and thinks John Cleese is the cheese. For those not familiar with the Fawlty Towers television series, it's a classic British sitcom from the 1970's starring John Cleese. Cleese plays a hotel manager named Basil Fawlty who is snobbish and often rude to the guests at the hotel. His incompetent staff and annoying wife don't help matters. It's the perfect farce and the hilarious series amuses my husband greatly. I've never seen the show but from viewing the YouTube videos, it does look like it could garner some good laughs.

While we haven't had a chance to watch the new DVD set, thanks to BBC Warner and their PR firm, one very lucky Brimful Curiosities reader will win the Fawlty Towers Remastered: Special Edition box set. (For the first time, I'm slightly jealous of my readers!)

To enter, leave a comment letting me know which Fawlty Towers character you look the most like. (Check out the "cast and crew" tab on the BBC America Shop for name ideas.)

• For contact purposes, if you are a non-blogger or your email is not accessible in your blog profile, please leave a valid email address within the comment section.
• Contest is open to US only
• Contest ends on Monday, November 16th, 2009 at 11:59 PM CST.
• Winner will be chosen at random
Four ways to gain extra entries (Maximum total entries is 4 - leave a separate comment for each entry):
1st extra entry: Follow Me! or subscribe by email or RSS reader
2nd extra entry: Blog about this contest then post your link in the comment section.
3rd extra entry: Follow me on twitter (iambrimful) and tweet about the contest.

Thanks to BBC for this giveaway opportunity. I did not receive my own DVD set to review. (View my full disclosure statement for more information about my reviews/posts.)

BARBIE AND BRATZ GO TO COURT

Seems that things are not cozy or even chummy in Barbie's world these days since Bratz dolls have taken the market share from the fashionista. As if things weren't bad enough with the Mattel family of dolls over the past couple of years, now they have to add a legal challenge to their pot of problems. Here's the sad story so far:

The maker of Barbie dolls, Mattel, has argued that it should own the rights to Barbie's younger rivals, the popular Bratz dolls range. The toy giant argued at the start of a court case that the 10-inch characters were created by a former employee while he was still working for Mattel. It wants competitor MGA Entertainment to stop selling Bratz products. But MGA contends that Carter Bryant came up with the Bratz designs when not working for Mattel. The smaller rival says Mr Bryant first had the idea in 1998, when he had been out of Mattel's employment for eight months, and that the dolls were developed by MGA engineers in late 2000 and 2001.

Here are some doll statistics regarding the group:

June 2001: Bratz dolls launchedMain characters: Cloe, Yasmin, Sasha and Jade dressed in urban fashions
September 2004: Bratz outsell Barbie in the UK
September 2005: Bratz animated TV series airs
August 2007: Bratz online community launched

But in the opening day of evidence in California, an attorney for Mattel said Mr Bryant's sketches were done on Mattel notepaper and that he worked on the designs for a year while still working for the company.

"MGA didn't hire him straight away," said Mattel attorney John Quinn. "They polished the fashion doll design using Mattel resources and Mattel personnel."

Earlier this month, Mattel dropped its claim against designer Carter Bryant for $35m in royalties he had been paid by MGA Entertainment for his work on the Bratz dolls. MGA said Mattel's claims against it were "equally baseless" and said it intended to counter-sue for $1bn in damages at the end of the current court case. Barbie has slipped in popularity since the launch of the Bratz franchise in 2001. As well as dolls, the Bratz product range includes clothes for young girls, stationery and a feature-length movie featuring the characters.

Extra: Barbie comments on the case!

In a recent interview with the newly released Barbie from her cardboard prison located in a warehouse... somewhere, the glamorous symbol of the vinyl set for her part, says that she only wants what is rightfully hers. Whatever that is once the dust settles.

"Designer shoes...designer outfits...designer purses...limos...my needs are simple," Barbie said, when asked for a reaction to what is happening, "especially compared to those Bratz girls! I hear they even got their own TV series! That's it! I'm suing!"

GI Joe who happened to be sitting next to her, came to her defence.

"Yeah - she only wants what's hers! D'ya think it was easy having to live in a cardboard box? Well I can tell 'ya - it wasn't! It was hard! Read hard! No bullets...no tanks... Nothing! No way to defend everyone from the enemy. Right babe?"

More updates as they occur.

12. Lewis: Whom the Gods Would Destroy

Someone kindly loaned me a copy of the first episode of the new Lewis series "Whom The Gods Would Destroy", written by Morse regular Daniel Boyle. Starring Kevin Whately as the eponymous Lewis, and Laurence Fox as his sergeant, Hathaway, this episode focuses on a middle-aged Oxford graduate, an artist, who was found murdered near his houseboat. Lewis and Hathaway find themselves investigating a murder case that risks implicating some of Oxford's most esteemed social and academic figures, such as the potential candidate for the Vice Chancellor's job at the University of Oxford. Both the victim and the potential Vice Chancellor belonged to a small group of men known as "The Sons of the Twice Born", who are named after an epithet of Dionysus - relating to his birth. The group's activities are shrouded in Greek codes, quotes from Nietzsche and a Dionysian fondness for drugs. The title is part of a quotation from Euripides: "Those whom the gods would destroy, they first send mad."

This was a good episode - the writers have clearly developed Lewis from the man who was always a steadying influence on Morse into a man with a darker side and I was impressed with then writers and with Whately himself. Lewis is no longer Morse's moral centre, following his wife's death as a result of a hit and run accident three years earlier. Instead he gets angry - and I mean scarily angry - I actually thought he was going to punch Hathaway at one point when he was raging about a character who had been involved in a car accident when he was high on drugs; the character got himself a good lawyer and got off, and whilst he was left in a wheelchair, the other driver was killed outright. The character shows great contempt for Lewis and Hathaway when they visit to talk to him about the murder and it's after this that Lewis gets really angry. But his anger is understandable and I sympathised with him, which is very important. I think the series wouldn't work if they had made Lewis into an unsympathetic character. You might not condone his anger, but you understand it.

I must say I'm puzzled by accounts of negative reviews of this episode in the media - apparently one reviewer commented that "Lewis" aspired to mundanity, which made me wonder if they'd watched a different episode to this one !
