4. Grain Edit & Varoom!

grain edit

Huge thanks to John O’Reilly and the rest of the crew at Varoom! magazine for featuring us in their latest issue. The 14-page article titled “The Outsiders” profiles Grain Edit, Unit Editions, John Ptak and showcases our fascination with analyzing, preserving and distributing archival imagery. In addition, each of us shared works that have shaped our curatorial views on design. Varoom! #15 is available in select shops in Europe as well as the U.S. Copies can be purchased online here.

5. Introducting Liz Meyer

Liz Meyer

As you may have noticed, a new name has been covering all things typography related on Grain Edit. The name’s Liz Meyer, and it should ring a bell. Liz is a talented designer and illustrator based in Brooklyn, one half of Script & Seal, and the newest addition to our Grain Edit crew.

To give you a better feel for our East Coast correspondent, we’ve conducted a little interview with her that you’re sure to enjoy! Without further a do, please welcome Liz…

Liz Meyer

What brought you to Grain Edit and what are your favorite things about the site?
I have never been a big blog-reader but I would always check out Grain Edit (seriously). [It's] probably because the work featured was actually inspirational to me, as opposed to posts that were an arbitrary mix of new work. I think it’s great that GE has a real “voice” on the internet, standing up for cool modern design.

Liz Meyer

You’re responsible for curating most of the typography we feature at Grain Edit. What do you look for in the artists you feature?
I always want to make sure that everyone I post inspires me in some way. Of course I have a specific style of design and typography that I gravitate towards, but I think it’s really important to see a range of styles that are beautifully executed to keep you at the top of your own personal game.

What is a typical day for you like?
It usually begins with a bagel & coffee. I find it really hard to focus for the most part, so if I don’t get started working while I eat said breakfast, I will have trouble getting into it. I often find myself working straight through the night until around 2am; so as you can see, I’m living the freelance dream!

What are 3 of your favorite books and albums?
Albums:
Sigur Rós - Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do
David Bazan - Live at the Grey Eagle
Maria Taylor - 11:11
(I definitely have a type)

Books:
Aesop’s Fables
The Stories of Ray Bradbury
+ many others, mostly short stories

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
While I am working during the day from my “home studio,” I watch all of the

8. Twitter Lists

twitter lists

A few days ago Twitter rolled out a new feature called “lists”. This feature is still in Beta, so it appears it’s only available to a small group of users right now. Lists are a way to organize the people you follow and to discover new and interesting Twitter accounts. We set up a handful of lists in different catergories, so you can easily find new designers & artists to follow.

Our lists include some of our favorites to follow in graphic design, typography and illustration. We also set up lists for web design, blogs and stores, but these lists need alot of work. You can find all of our lists on the right hand side of our Twitter profile page. These lists are far from comprehensive, so if you have any suggestions of people to add please let us know in the comments.

9. Chronicle Books 555 Event

chronicle books 555

I had a blast speaking at Chronicle Books’ 555 event last week. Huge thanks to Suzanne LaGassa and the rest of the Chronicle crew for the invitation. The theme of the night was centered around blogs/design communities. Lauren Smith and Derek Fagerstrom from the Curiosity Shoppe and Smarts and Crafts, David from BoingBoing, Joe from Typophile, and Suzanne from the Chronicle Book’s blog also presented that night. Each of us we’re given five minutes to speak about our process and inspiration. It was great to meet everyone and I hope this series continues!

You can see pictures from the event here.

18. Grain Edit on Inspiration Resource

I want to thank Michelle Mccormick for inviting me to contribute to her wonderful blog Inspiration Resource. I’ve been a fan of her site for a while, so I was excited when she asked if I would be willing to share a few pictures of how I organize and collect inspiration. I happily agreed and broke out the camera. In the post you’ll see a few pictures of the folders I use to store labels and the mylar envelopes I use to store brochures and maps.

You can see all the pictures here.

After you check our the post, be sure to browse around the rest of the site. Five days a week Michelle posts great examples of textile design, photography, graphic design, illustration and more.

24. Thanks for all the Wonderful Comments

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Liz and I went to this new Singaporean restaurant in Lafayette. The food was great. I had the Nasi Lemak and it was on point. The rice had so much flavor. We wanted to get the Chicken Rice, but they ran out. Say what? Singaporean food without Chicken Rice? Oh well, I was kind of bummed about that, but we’ll be back.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments on the Grain Edit 1 Year Anniversary Giveaway! It’s really inspiring to see all the positive feedback. You guys are the best!
