Hope you all changed your clocks last night!
Hope you all changed your clocks last night!
Daylight Savings Time is throwing me for a loop. Why do we do this, again? Wikipedia makes it sound like its original rationale is obsolete. Besides, most of the world gets by just fine without dinking around with their clocks twice a year.
Yeah, I'm a little bitter. It gets dark too early here as it is.
There are many nice things about living in Chicago, but living on the far eastern edge of the Central Time Zone is not one of them. I grew up on the far western edge of the Eastern Time Zone, and in the longest days of summer didn't have to come home from the playground or my friends' house until after 9 because it stayed light so late. That was glorious.
I do like having daylight when I get up in midsummer, but I don't really need it. I'm just writing, reading email, eating breakfast. Solitary indoor stuff. Whereas evening light means long walks, playing frisbee or catch, and keeping my eyes open past dinnertime.
Anyway, since the time change I've been waking up even earlier than usual, without the aid of an alarm clock. I'm not totally happy about that, but it makes me think of one of my favorite songs by my friend Lis Harvey, "Four-Thirty."
woke at 4:30
it was early
i went to the all-night store
for more
walked through the aisle with the
paper towels tucked in my arm
hummed to some songs i learned
by osmosis in my mother's car
i woke at 4:30
for more
for more
You can listen to "Four-Thirty" online... Happiest song about being up early ever!
Tuesday is the worst.
Sunday morning -- it is later than you think. OK, whatever, get a move on.
Monday morning -- ugghh, feeling off kilter, gotta get up in the dark and get a move on.
Tuesday morning --I've been hit by a bus, run over by a train, trampled by elephants, cannot move.
The Tuesday after the daylight savings switch was always the worst day in the elementary school year for student alertness, teacher coma and kids getting hit in the face with a ball in P.E.
Wednesday will be better.
Interesting, I can't think of a children's book on the subject of daylight savings, even nonfiction.
This morning my own entling moaned , "Why do they do this to us?"
Lake Baikal, Russia
Coordinates: 53 0 N 108 0 E
Total area: 12,160 square miles (31,494 sq km)
Overshadowed by its more immodestly-named North American cousins the Great Lakes, Russia’s Ozero Baykal, or Lake Baikal, is no less a remarkable expanse of water itself. At 5,714 feet (1,743 m), the deepest lake also happens to be the oldest freshwater body on the planet. (more…)
Oh, and it's WORSE for me because here in the UK it hasn't switched over yet. I'm hearing everybody groan and then will have to groan alone in three weeks!!!
I'm with the entling: Why DO they do this?! It doesn't save energy.
For serious, Camille. I keep drinking coffee today, and it's just not helping. It comforts me to think that perhaps everyone else is walking around in the same daze I am.
Yeah...it's nice not leaving work in the dark, but it's going to take a while for me to stop being ready for bed at like, 8.
I can only think of two good things about daylight savings: it's warmer outside when I'm walking to class in the morning (an important consideration here in North Texas) and there's still daylight when I'm walking to evening rehearsals.

ps: I had to share my word verification with everyone. The one that proves that a human is posting this comment?

Isn't that fun?
And the answer to "Why do they do this to us?" is...
Follow the money.
A friend of mine calls the Daylight Savings Time switchover "Worst Day of the Year" and the end of it, "Best Day of the Year." I can safely say that this Sunday was the worst switchover we'd ever had. Everyone was cranky! No one went anywhere fun! It is indeed a children's book in the making. Someone else can write it, though...
It was terrible. Terrible. Especially Tuesday. My poor kids. They had to get themselves ready and drag me out in my pajamas to get them to school :)
I hear you sister. I'm all out of sorts this week and, sure, let's blame it on the time change.
