1. Tenth day of Advent - Ornaments

Tenth day of Advent

Tonight we put up the Christmas tree and brought out the boxes of decorations, waking them from their year-long slumber.  For the tenth day of Advent here is a tiny detail from  "Grandmothers Tree", a story about just such an evening.

2. Christmas Decorations by Morgan Mandel

Though I don't really like snow that much because it has a tendency to get in my way, I'm still very partial to snowman decorations. You can tell from these photos. Except for the set with the dog, the rest are from my own house. I use the snowmen because they look cute and cheerful and that's reason enough for me. They were probably made at factories. I do know there's a place not far from my house where pottery classes are taught, but I buy them instead.
Descriptions can be important in manuscripts. Make sure to add enough to give the reader a feel of what the characters are like. From what I've described about my decorations you can tell I'm a busy person who isn't patient or talented enough to attempt making pottery decorations.

Another example is I'm using a small fiber optic tree this year because of our dog, aptly named Rascal, and also because I can't find room in the house anywhere to put a large one. Many choose real trees and go to great lengths to decorate them, matching the ornament colors, using certain types. Some use garlands that look like old-fashioned tinsel. Others actually string popcorn or use real or fake cranberries as garlands. There are tons of variations of how to decorate trees and other Christmas season items.

How a person decorates a tree can hint at if they're nostalgic, modern, a perfectionist, or happy go lucky, busy, or just impatient.  I'm sure there are other decorations that also demonstrate character traits.

4. Handmade black hole

CANCER HOROSCOPE DECEMBER 11th 2008

Even if you have already thrown your hands up in despair and let go of your agenda, it's still entirely possible that everything will turn out okay. You may be working overtime to come up with a contingency plan in case things become even more uncertain. Unfortunately, the more you plot and scheme, the crazier it could get. Adjust your expectations, let go and move on.

I heard on the news that scientists have discovered a black hole at the center of our Galaxy or Universe - somewhere big and spacey, anyway. They should have pointed their telescopes at our village, because I can state with certainty that there is a black hole here into which my days are being sucked with frightening velocity.
One of the nicest things to happen this week was the arrival of Jerome. Andy was nosying over my shoulder as I opened the bag, and exclaimed 'ahh, that's nice!' And so he is. He is more than nice, he is splendidly lovely, and he was a very generous gift from Green Phoenix, who makes utterly gorgeous desirables. At the moment he is hanging in my studio, as we are very old fashioned and don't bring our little tree in until Christmas Eve, when he will have a best branch. Thank you so much Nikki - we will treasure him.

My black hole was entirely of my own making - I started making Christmas ornaments and they sold frighteningly well. Faster then I could make them...and as usual, I had dozens of designs and only one pair of hands.

I've been investing in findings and wire, which is a whole new world to muddle my poor head with; wire gauges, split pins and filigree basket beads...luckily I still have a great set of wire tools which Andy's dad gave me way back in 1993, when I had a brief period of making puppets. Or rather, starting them and not finishing them. So for all you crafters who worry about hoarding supplies - don't chuck anything out, you will eventually find a use for whatever it is, even if it is fifteen years later.

However, as anyone who's served time in retail knows, December is Too Late to be stocking up for this year's holiday. So my nice 2009 Country Homes and Interiors calendar starts with my New Year's resolution;

I am so completely off the ball with everything that I forgot to announce the launch of a really beautifully designed new online magazine in PDF form, UK Handmade, (download size 3.41 MB) which is crammed with Good Things and familiar artist/designer names in the Etsy/online crafting world. Toby of Natural Attrill is in there, and interesting articles on fashion, cookery, jewellery, accessories, becoming a small business, lifestyle and somewhere near the end, a rather waffly self penned article I submitted about my discovery of needle felt. When I first heard about it,
I hadn't realised just how professional it was going to look; it really is a good looking magazine, and is simply begging to be made into print form. UK Handmade also has a main website with a forum which always welcomes new members.

Did I say that Valentine's Day starts next week? It does in this house; I'm not being caught out like that again and I have so many ideas for little heart-lovey things of gold and silver and felt...

5. Christmas Decorations and Brownies a Cookin'

It actually snowed in Houston today! Of course it melted as soon as it hit the ground but everyone was very excited. I decided to spark the fireplace and put out some of the Christmas decorations. I also wanted to warm the house and tummies by baking some brownies. What a great combination!

My husband and I have a great collection of Department 56 houses that we just love and seriously need to add some new pieces to.

I have several small trees that I decorate every year. One of them has all the handmade kids ornaments and pictures on it. My husband suggested it a few years back and Ive been doing it ever sense.

I love this time of year! I just wish it did not go by so fast.

6. Christmas

...was our usual quiet togetherness. Reverting back to our student days in terms of drinking good beer and slobbing out. I baked the grandmother of all Christmas cakes...

hand blanching almonds - hours of fun for everyone!

and our little living tree was invited in - he has been with us for eleven years and we decorate him a few days before Christmas...

The lovely wood fairies called again, with six sumptuous sacks of logs, and Secret Santa left a mysterious bundle on the doorstep on Christmas Eve. Somehow 'he' knew I am in the middle of a tea towel famine. (Andy has used most of them to clean the bike with). Not only did I get a beautiful Emma Bridgewater tea towel which I can't quite bring myself to use, but a somewhat eccentric miscellany of coal, logs, a clockwork cowboy, fruit, nuts sprouts, chocolates and glittery stars. Eccentric, unless you know me well and how delighted I would be with it all. I think
I know who it was though...

My Christmas SOSF match sent me delightful hand made ceramic decorations...thank you so much Sarah, they will be treasured.

There was splendid Christmas box from another kind fairy - complete with sweet handpainted card...

jampacked with goodies, as every respectable hamper should be

...which magically turned into a Pumpkin...

"I would eat the world if I could get my jaws round it"

...and a mere two days rest for Andy before he had to return to the Valhalla of retail where he is gainfully employed.

Next blog installment - Christmas card Heaven and the biggest 'Thank You' letter I have ever written.
