2. Wings and Winners

I am Icharus.

Except instead of wax and feathers,
I'm patched together with glitter glue,
writing morsels and
cups of hot tea.
Struck by a blaze of new story lightning,
I'm going down.

That's a good thing, right?
...Right?

Muttering at walls, scribbling
"Words are my wings!" on sticky notes,
covered in ink smudges,
I'm delightedly doomed.

But not too doomed
to help with peg dolls.
Indeed!
And Ancient Greek peggies at that.

Athena, patron of wisdom, and arts and crafts!

She's an owl lady.

Aphrodite, patron of love.

Posiedon. Sea guy. And that's his trident.
Hera, wife of Zeus, patron of marriage.
Peacock lady.
Also compared to a cow in some circles.
Now you know.

Parthenon?

Ruler. Cardboard. Scissors. Tape. White glue.

And now for the drum-roll, please...
we'd like to announce a winner!

A hearty thanks to all of you who entered
Margaret Bloom's Making Peg Dolls giveaway,
and thank you to Margaret for the fantastic blog tour.

Our winner is... Barb Davis-Pyles. Congratulations, Barb!

I hope you will all go out and find this beautiful book.
You are going to LOVE it.

And did you know SACRED DIRT has a facebook page?

3. "moon and stars"

... was the title of The Arts Center's entry in the local Christmas Parade this year. Every year it comes together beautifully in the end, what a lot of fun!

it rolled part of the way, and "floated" the rest. Hey, that's me...

"geodesic sphere" made entirely of recycled newspaper and masking tape

all ready to go!

decorated with tinsel and glow sticks, filled with balloons.
Some of them popped en route and sounded like firecrackers.

5. Project 4 of 365

Meow
I wanted a quick collage for project 4 since I didn't meander down to my studio until 10:00 tonight. I had already created four other animals (bear, duck, pig, and owl) on recycled cardboard dividers from a case of beer.

I need a better schedule if I'm going to keep this up for another 361 days! Oy!

Recycled elements: cardboard, scrap paper, ribbon remnant

Baby is Back.

Baby is Back. - Detail

GUEST CHECK

I love you so much baby
Even know you can be a bitch
I still love you
Cause I know who you really are
So please bring her back baby

We can have a great life together
But it's up to you
I love you baby
Have a merry x-mas
Love Austin

I found this note in the ditch by my mailbox a couple years ago and have been inspired by it since. I am intrigued by the use of "baby" and the multitude of emotions layered in this short note...pleading, love, insults, ambivalence...all written on a restaurant guest check. What a story! Who is baby? Did she get this note and toss it in the ditch? Or was Austin too proud or embarrassed to give it to her?

Recycled elements: guest check "love" note, ticket stub, magazine paper, stationary, parking stubs and other memorabilia.

7. When Elves Visit

When elves visit,
be they wee bairns,
or white-whiskered and jolly

it is best to
provide snacks

and woolly stockings.

Might I also suggest
a means of documentation -

for doubters, and writers alike.
How else will people believe us?

I've started keeping a notebook and pens at the ready,
in case elves, or story lightning strikes.

11. Chicken Nugget Lemon Tooty

By Elijah, age 4

By Eric, much older than 4

The kids over at the Chicken Nugget Lemon Tooty blog have been sharing their illustrations now for 5 years! To celebrate their 5th anniversary, artists have been invited to contribute artwork based on one of the kid's drawings. I decided to create something based on Elijah's (age 4) panda.

Please take the time to visit their blog and tell those kids how awesome they are. And if you would like to create an illustration, they are taking submissions through the end of August.

13. Japan

We loved making dolls for Haiti so much,
we simply had to do something for Japan.

Hurray for Dolly Donations, the blog who connected us
with the right people!

The kids helped me make three dolls
for displaced children in Japan:

quilting scraps became Princess Leia Buns and Blue Bunnie.

16. Beautiful Trash: mini art books from recycled scrap

booksofbeautifultrash

Over at Illustration Friday, artist Rama Hughes writes about a found art project he does with his students called Beautiful Trash:

At the beginning of the school year, I invited my students to contribute to my Collection of Beautiful Trash. I promised to use it for an end of the year surprise. Over the course of the year, they got really excited about the quality of their trash. As soon as the school year ended, I browsed through the detritus, selected the most compelling items, and bound the beautiful trash into these three volumes.

My own collection of beautiful trash starts now!
