2. Emily Trunko Press Release

INTERNATIONAL TUMBLR SENSATION EMILY TRUNKO TO PUBLISH TWO BOOKS WITH CROWN BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS

Dear My Blank and The Last Message Received, based on Tumblrs of the same name, to be released in the U.S. in 2016

New York, NY, December 7, 2015—Crown Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, has acquired and will publish DEAR MY BLANK and THE LAST MESSAGE RECEIVED, book projects based on the popular Tumblrs of the same name, created by fifteen-year-old Emily Trunko. The two-book deal for U.S. rights was negotiated by Emily Easton, Executive Editor, Crown Books for Young Readers, with Heather Flaherty at The Bent Agency on behalf of Emily Trunko, and was announced today by Phoebe Yeh, Vice President and Publishing Director of Crown.

Trunko’s Dear My Blank Tumblr (dearmyblank.tumblr.com) launched in March 2015 and showcases anonymous letters that people never intend to, or don’t have the courage to, send—ranging in length from a single sentence to thousands of words, and covering a range of topics and emotions from heartbreak, unrequited love, betrayal, loss, self-awareness, courage, and pride. Over 20,000 anonymous letters from people of all ages have been submitted to the Tumblr, and about 100 new letters arrive every day. The site received 34,000 new notes/comments last month alone.

Cosmopolitan calls the Tumblr “an addictive site full of strangers’ secrets,” Distractify says it is “a safe haven for hundreds of letters that will never be sent,” and Hello Giggles raves that Dear My Blank is “Tumblr’s newest obsession.”

Upon the recent launch of her second Tumblr, The Last Message Received (thelastmessagereceived.tumblr.com), Trunko gained 40,000 followers in just three weeks, with nearly 5,000 messages coming in the last two weeks. The Tumblr showcases highs and lows of the human condition, sharing the last messages people received from someone significant in their lives—death, breakup, friendship ending, family fights, etc. Some posts are screenshots of a last text exchange, along with a note giving the background behind the texts.

The two books to be published by Crown, DEAR MY BLANK and THE LAST MESSAGE RECEIVED, will be curated collections of the original Tumblr posts, which have resonated with both teens and adults. The books will be published in 2016, dates to be announced.

“The emotions evoked by Emily Trunko’s Tumblrs are universally understood and felt,” says Easton. “We are excited to bring the Tumblr posts together into two unique book collections, DEAR MY BLANK and THE LAST MESSAGE RECEIVED, enabling readers to connect with the very real and relatable human content on a more personal level.”

4. Random House Press Release

RANDOM HOUSE CHILDREN’S BOOKS TO PUBLISH A NEW LINE OF BOOKS FROM ACTRESS, MATHEMATICIAN, AND BESTSELLING AUTHOR DANICA McKELLAR

New York, NY (December 3, 2015)—Random House Children’s Books has acquired a new line of kid-friendly math books from New York Times bestselling author Danica McKellar, it was announced today by Barbara Marcus, President & Publisher, Random House Children’s Books. The deal for eight books with world rights was made by Emily Easton, Executive Editor at Crown Books for Young Readers, with Laura Nolan at Kuhn Projects, LLC. Easton will edit the books, with the first title scheduled for publication in Spring 2017.

Danica McKellar is the author of several New York Times bestselling books, including Math Doesn’t Suck, Kiss My Math, Hot X: Algebra Exposed!, and Girls Get Curves. Her books resonate with young people because they put math in real-world scenarios, and she has long been an outspoken role model encouraging young women to excel in math. McKellar graduated summa cum laude in mathematics from UCLA, then coauthored a math theorem later published as the Chayes-McKellar-Winn Theorem.

McKellar’s new titles from Crown will bring early math concepts to toddlers through third graders. She will introduce these basic concepts and skills in a fun and memorable way, with two separate series aimed at different age groups. The first will be a story-based picture book series for toddlers that parents can read to their children again and again. The books will show math as a natural part of life, in real-world scenarios and with adorable illustrations. Crown will also publish McKellar’s second series of titles, for second and third graders, which will tackle the math concepts that students at this age struggle with the most, in an entertaining and innovative format.

In addition to her impressive academic credentials, McKellar is also well known for her work as an actor. She played Winnie Cooper on The Wonder Years, had a recurring role on The West Wing, and reached the quarterfinals on Dancing with the Stars in 2014. The New York Times wrote of the actor and author, “McKellar is probably the only person on prime-time television who moonlights as a cyberspace math tutor.”

Says McKellar, “As a homeschooling mom of a five-year-old boy, I’m passionate about making sure kids grow up to embrace math and all it can do for them in their lives. Let’s raise a generation of kids who, from their youngest memories, understand math to be an integral part of their lives—and even a subject they associate with cuddle time and laughter.”

Easton remarks, “Danica has a proven ability to make math concepts not only understandable, but fun and approachable. Her math ‘mission’ dovetails perfectly with Crown’s commitment to publishing innovative books that spark a reader’s curiosity and connection to the world. I look forward to a long partnership!”

You can follow McKellar on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Periscope. @danicamckellar

6. Judy Wacjman on digital serfdom and the future of work

C_Wajcman_Pressed_9780226196473_jkt_IFT

In a piece for Pacific Standard, as part of their Future of Work series, in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, Judy Wacjman tackled themes from her recent book Pressed for Time: The Acceleration of Life in Digital Capitalismwhich accounted for our paradoxical desire to interpret our experience of digital technology as bound up with the hastening of everyday life:

Such anxieties are based on a fundamental misreading of the relationship between humans and machines. I have been researching technological change for 30 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that technology never simply speeds things up. Rather, every major technological innovation comes hand in hand with new activities and experiences, creating new ways of working and socializing. Indeed, often as not, its effects are counter-intuitive and contradictory, surprising even the designers. So the very same devices that can make us feel overworked and harried also enable us to work more efficiently and take more control of our time.

In other words, the notion that we are all cyber-serfs, technologically tethered workers, is far too one-dimensional. It attributes too much power and agency to technology itself. While it is true that we have all become “networked workers” equipped with computers, tablets, smartphones, and landlines, how we deploy these devices crucially depends on what kind of work we do, where, and with whom. While I was being driven to Edinburgh airport recently, the taxi driver proceeded to have an argument with his son on his hands-free phone. His occupation, unlike mine, involves a lot of waiting and I imagine that the quality and utility of that time has been much improved by mobile connectivity.

Pressed for Time furthers this exploration by accounting for technological change as a tool for navigating accompanying societal changes, rather than a prism through which our desire to move faster, quicker, and better is refracted. You can read more about the book here.

7. Dreams Come True-- Press Release

I’m Kya Aliana and I'm here to talk about the importance of the Dreams Come True Anthology and Aspirations Press.

I have been writing since a very young age. I wrote short stories since before I can even remember, and I completed my first novel at thirteen. I self-published my first novel at fifteen-years-old. Now, at twenty-one, I am the proud author of nine novels and counting. I’m working hard, writing every day, taking workshops, striving to improve, and following my dreams.

Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have an immense amount of support and encouragement from my amazing parents, family, friends, and the outstanding Watauga County Public Library in Boone, NC. It's these positive reinforcements, outlooks, and attitudes that I attribute to finding my passion and being productive at such a young age.

I remember writing my first few short stories and then not knowing where to go. Of course I wanted them "out there"... "published"... "ready to read"... but I wasn't sure where to go. Sure, I found a few off-beat magazines and submitted, but I didn't get much of a response and so came the first few rejection letters.

My parents were amazing and would take my stories to be bound at Staples - I would be so excited! I would show them off to everybody I knew... a real story with a real cover, bound and ready to be read at the next campfire.

The Watauga County Public Library started up the Thingummywut literary magazine that featured stories, artwork, and poetry from young authors and illustrators... it was even more amazing when my first short story was legitimately published in a local magazine.

Earlier this year, I started Aspirations Press to be a positive outlet for young authors and their stories. I'm looking for potential, ambition, passion, and stories that kids love to write. I honestly think that the literary world needs more outlets like the Dreams Come True Anthology. I hope that others will follow a similar path and offer more outlets to our talented youth.

The Dreams Come True Anthology is an important and vital contribution to the literary world. The new generation of horror is here and they deserve to be heard!

I hope you will join me in this great project by passing along this news, helping promote, and encouraging any young writers that you know to read this anthology and submit their stories to future volumes. (Yes, this means your kids, your little brother and sister, your nieces, your nephews, your best friends, and the kids you see quietly writing up a storm in your local library).

The goal is to positively support young authors' ambitions by publishing, professionally editing, promoting their names and stories, and helping them get the recognition and encouragement they deserve. They are the future voices of their generation and I look forward to publishing them and getting their names out there as the premier authors of fiction!

b2ap3_thumbnail_dreams-come-true.jpg

By reading your copy of the anthology and promoting on social media, you are supporting these young writers as well as all the others who desire to be more than just texting teens. You will be reinforcing in future generations that education is necessary and that there are rewards — being published, being a professional. You would help show them that the act of love and commitment it takes to finish a story or novel is worth the effort. You will help build a strong foundation for the novelists and storytellers of our future…the future of horror!

Thank you all!

8. Carol Kasper receives the 2015 AAUP Constituency Award

11a657d

Carol Kasper, our very own marketing director, was recently honored by the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) with their 2015 Constituency Award. The Constituency Award is unique, in that it involves an open-call nomination process from one’s peers, and focuses not only on individual achievement, but also on the spirit of cooperation and collaboration that marks the measure of integrity and success within the scholarly publishing community.

From the official press release:

The Constituency Award, established in 1991, honors an individual of a member press who has demonstrated active leadership and service, not only in service to the Association but to the scholarly publishing community as a whole. In addition to a term on the Association’s Board of Directors from 2009 to 2011, Kasper has been a member of numerous committees and panels throughout the years, including the Marketing Committee, the Bias-Free Language Task Force, and Midwest Presses Meeting Committees. . . . In addition to her formal service to the Association, and her leadership in the university press and international scholarly publishing worlds, Kasper has hosted numerous Whiting/AAUP Residents over the years. One of the nominating letters added: “Carol has dedicated all this time and energy to the AAUP in her typically quiet, unassuming fashion.”

From University of Chicago Press director Garrett Kiely’s remarks at the award ceremony:

What makes Carol special and what uniquely qualifies her for this award are the people that Carol has mentored, supported, and trained in her time here in Chicago,” says Garrett Kiely, Director of University of Chicago Press and presenter of the award. “To put it in scholarly journal terms, her ‘impact factor’ has been very high!”

And just to add:

Carol is a phenomenal teacher and mentor—the very best kind, in that the generosity she extends to her colleagues, the fierce integrity with which she makes things happen, the self-determination and cooperation she encourages, and the good humor she doles out all seem effortless, because they are so very much a part of her. Congrats, CK!

9. Can We Race Together? An Autopsy

Berrey_Enigma_9780226246239_cvr_IFt

“Can We Race Together? An Autopsy”*

by Ellen Berrey

***

Corporate diversity dialogues are ripe for backlash, the research shows,
even without coffee counter gimmicks.

Corporate executives and university presidents are, yet again, calling for public discussion on race and racial inequality. Revelations about the tech industry’s diversity problem have company officials convening panels on workplace barriers, and, at the University of Oklahoma spokespeople and students are organizing town-hall sessions in response to a fraternity’s racist chant.

The most provocative of the efforts was Starbucks’ failed Race Together program. In March, the company announced that it would ask baristas to initiate dialogues with customers about America’s most vexing dilemma. Although public outcry shut down those conversations before they even got to “Hello,” Starbucks said it would nonetheless carry on Race Together with forums and special USA Today discussion guides. As someone who has done sociological research on diversity initiatives for the past 15 years, I was intrigued.

For a moment, let’s take this seriously

What would conversations about race have looked like if they played out as Starbucks imagined, given the social science of race? Can companies, in Starbucks’ CEO Howard Schultz’s words, “create a more empathetic and inclusive society—one conversation at a time”? A data-driven autopsy of Starbucks’ ambitions is in order.

Surprisingly, Starbucks turned its sights on the provocative issue of racial inequality—not just feel-good cultural differences (or, thank goodness, the sort of “respectability politics” that, under well-intentioned cover, focus on the moral flaws of black people). Most Americans, especially those of us who are white, are ill-informed on the topic of inequality. We generally do not recognize our personal prejudice. We routinely, and incorrectly, insist that we are colorblind and that racism is a thing of the past, as sociologist Eduardo Bonilla-Silva has documented. When we do try to talk about race, we usually resort to what sociologists Joyce Bell and Doug Hartmann call the “happy talk” of diversity, without a language for discussing who comes out ahead and who gets pushed behind.

Starbucks pulls back the veil on our unconscious

How to take this on? Starbucks opted to tackle the thorny issue of unacknowledged prejudice—the cognitive biases that predispose a person against racial minorities and in favor of white people. The company intended to offer “insight into the divisive role unconscious bias plays in our society and the role empathy can play to bridge those divides.” The conversation guide it distributed the first week described a bias experiment in which lawyers were asked to assess an error-ridden memo. When told that the (fictional) author was white, the lawyers commented “has potential.” When told he was black, they remarked “can’t believe he went to NYU.”

Perhaps this was a promising starting point. Americans prefer psychological explanations; we like to think that terrorism, poverty, obesity, and other social ills are rooted in the individual’s psyche.

A comforting thought: I’m not racist

We also do not want to see ourselves as complicit in the segregation of our communities, workplaces, or friendships. We definitely don’t want the stigma of being “racist.” Even white supremacists resist that label. So if it’s true that we can’t see our own bias, as Starbucks told us, we can take comfort in our innocence.

Starbucks’ description of the bias experiment actually took the conversation where it never seems to venture: to the advantages that white people enjoy. White people get help, forgiveness, and the inside track far more often than do people of color. But Starbucks stopped before pointing the finger at who gives white people these advantages.

The rest of Race Together veered off in a confused direction, mostly bent on educated enlightenment. The conversation guide was a mishmash of racial utopianism (the millennials have it figured out!), demography as destiny (immigration changes everything!), triumph over a troublesome past (progress!), testimonies by people of color (the one white guy is clueless!), statistics, inspired introspection, and social network tallies (“I have ____ friends of a different race”!).

Not your daddy’s diversity training

Companies have been trying to positively address race for decades. Typically, they do so through diversity management within their own workforce. Their stated purpose is to increase the numbers of people of color in the top ranks or improve the corporate culture. Most diversity management strategies, however, are far from effective (unless they make someone responsible for results), as shown by as sociologists Alexandra Kalev, Frank Dobbin, and Erin Kelly. Corporate aggrandizement and the façade of legal compliance seem as much the goals as actual change.

Race Together most closely resembled diversity training, which tries to undo managerial stereotyping through educational exchange, but this time the exchange was between capitalists and consumers. And it bucked the typical managerial spin. Usually, the kicker is the business case for diversity: this will boost productivity and profits. Instead, Starbucks made the diversity case for business. Consumption, supposedly, would create inclusion and equity. That would be its own reward. There was no clear connection to its specific business goals, beyond (disgruntled) buzz about the brand.

What were you thinking, Howard Schultz?

Briefly, let’s revisit what made Starbucks’ over-the-counter conversations so offensive. Starbucks was asking low-wage, young, disproportionately minority workers to prompt meaningful exchanges about race with uncaffeinated, mostly white and affluent customers. Even under the best of circumstances, diversity dialogues tend to put the burden of explaining racism on people of color. Here, baristas were supposed to walk the third rail during the morning rush hour without specialized training, much less extra compensation. One sociological term for this is Arlie Hochschild‘s “emotional labor.” The employee was required to tactfully manage customers’ feelings. The most likely reaction from coffee drinkers? Microaggressions of avoidance, denial, and eye-rolling.

The alternative, for Starbucks so-called “partners,” was disgruntled defiance. At my local Starbucks, when I asked about these conversations, the manager emphatically said, “We’re not participating.” The barista next to her was blunt: “We think it’s bullshit.”

Swiftly, the company came out with public statements that had the air of faux intention and cover-up, as if to say, “We’re not retreating; we’re merely advancing in the other direction.” Starbucks had promised a year of Race Together, but the collapse of the café stunt made an all-out retreat more likely: one more forum, one more ad, then silence.

 This doesn’t work…

Race Together trod treacherous ground. The research shows that diversity training backfires when it attempts to ferret out prejudice. It puts white people on the defensive and creates a backlash against people of color. For committed consumers, Starbucks was messing with the equivocally best part about capitalism: that you can give someone money and they give you a thing. For activists, this all smelled wrong (i.e., not how you want your latté). Like co-opted social justice.

… Does anyone in HQ ever ask what works?

Starbucks was wise to shift closer to the traditional role of a coffee house—the so-called Third Place between work and home that Schultz has long exalted. Hopefully, the company looks to proven models for productive conversations on race. Organizations such as the Center for Racial Justice Innovation push forward discussions that recognize racism as systemic, not as isolated individual attitudes and bad behaviors. This helps to avoid what people hate most about diversity trainings: forced discourse about superficial differences (“are you a daytime or nighttime person?”) and the wretched hunt for guilty bad guys.

According to social psychologists, unconscious bias can be minimized when people have positive incentives for interpersonal, cross-racial relationships. Wearing a sports jersey for the same team is impressively effective for getting white people to cooperate with African Americans, as shown in a study led by psychologist Jason Nier. The idea is to not provoke white people’s fear and avoidance of doing wrong. It is to motivate people to try to do what’s right by establishing a shared identity

Starbucks also needs to wrestle with its goal of “together.” That’s not always the outcome of conversations about race. Political scientist Katherine Cramer Walsh found that participants in civic dialogues on race commonly walk away with a heightened awareness of their differences, not with the unity that meeting organizers hope to foster.

Is it better to abandon ship?

Despite its missteps, Starbucks, in fact, alit on hopeful insights. Individuals can ignite change, and empathy and listening are starting points. The company deserves some applause for taking the risk and for its deliberate focus on inequality. Undoubtedly, working-class, minority millennials could teach the rest of the country something about race (and executives something about company policy).

The truth hurts

But let’s be clear about what Race Together was not. It was not about addressing institutional discrimination. In that scenario, Starbucks would have issued a press release about eliminating patterns of unfair hiring and firing. It would have overhauled a corporate division of labor that channels racial minorities into lower-tier, nonunionized jobs. It might very well have closed stores in gentrifying neighborhoods.

Those solutions start with incisive diagnosis, not personal reflection. (The U.S. Department of Justice did just that when it scrutinized racial profiling in traffic stops and court fines in Ferguson, Missouri.) Those solutions require change in corporate policy.

To make Race Together honest, Starbucks needed to recognize an ugly truth: America’s race problem is not an inability to talk. It is a failure to rectify the unfair disadvantages hoisted on people of color and the unearned privileges that white people enjoy. Corporations, in their internal operations, are complicit in these very dynamics. So, too, are long-standing government policies, such as tax deductions of home mortgage interest (white folks are far more likely to own their homes). And white Americans may not want to hear it, but racial inequality is, in large measure, rooted in our collective choices: where we’ll pay property taxes, who we’ll tell about a job lead, what we’ll deem criminal, and even when we’ll smile or scowl. Howard Schultz, are you listening?

11. [PR] Amazon Announces Kindle Unlimited

Amazon announced a new subscription based lending program available for the Kindle and Kindle Apps.  Kindle Unlimited looks pretty promising; for $9.99 per month, you can read as many books as you want.  This differs from the one free borrow per month available to Prime members.  Amazon’s imprints (Montlake Romance, 47North, etc) are included, as well as titles from Open Road Media, Kensington, Scholastic, and other smaller pubs.  Bella Andre’s books are included, so if you’re curious to read her stuff, you can gobble them all up for $9.99 per month.  This only available in the US currently.  There’s also a large audio book library so you can take your stories on the go.

I plan on trying out Kindle Unlimited soon (as soon as I have a couple free weekends in a row!).  The first 30 days are free, and you can cancel at any time.

What do you think Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited?  Will you try it out?  If some of my favorite publishers, like Entangled and Harlequin were included, I would be signing up in a nanosecond instead of waiting.  I’m curious to see who else they get on board.

The full press release follows:

[Insert Book Cover Here] About Georgetown Academy:

Synopsis:

It’s the beginning of a new political administration. That might not mean much at most high schools, but at Georgetown Academy, Washington D.C.’s most elite prep school, January 20th means new alliances, new flings, and new places to party.

While freshmen—nicknamed “interns” for their willingness to jump into bed with anyone higher on the D.C. totem pole—navigate the not-so-friendly halls of GA searching for Algebra and Bio classes, the school’s lifers have other things on their minds.

For self-proclaimed D.C. royalty Brinley Madison (of those Madisons), the first day of school is all about establishing the social hierarchy and playing the part of perfect political wife to her boyfriend, the outgoing Vice President’s son. Too bad he has a wandering eye that puts Bill Clinton’s to shame. Can she keep him, and her own secret vice, in check?

Ellie Walker, Brinley’s best friend, floats through the halls on the arm of golden boy Hunter McKnight (the JFK of GA). But when her ex-boyfriend, Gabe, returns to town and her Senator mother’s political nemesis is reelected, Ellie’s life starts to snowball out of control.

Shy, quiet Evan Hartnett is more into books than beer, and her closet is full of t-shirts and jeans instead of Jason Wu and Jimmy Choo. No one’s ever really noticed her—but she’s been noticing them. When her star rises as an intern at D.C.’s most-watched political news show, she soon finds the two worlds colliding in ways that make her question what’s secret and what’s fair game.

New girl Taryn Reyes is all laid-back, California cool; with a father who’s in line to be the first Hispanic president, she’s ready to dive into the D.C. scene with an open mind. But when her fellow students turn out to be more interested in spreading rumors than making friends, she realizes that forging a drama-free path might be a lot harder than she thinks.

With so many new friends and former flames in the mix, things are bound to get a little heated. And while diplomatic immunity might keep the cops away, there’s not much it can do about the press.

In a town where one teenage misstep can turn into a national scandal, the students at Georgetown Academy will have to be on their best behavior—or, at least, they’ll have to make the world believe that they are.

Because there’s only one rule: whatever you do, don’t get caught.

What’s Cool from Coliloquy:

As the party scene at Georgetown Academy gets under way, authors Alyssa and Jessica let readers decide which of the main girls to follow. You’ll see scandalous behavior, unexpected liaisons, and secret betrayals…all giving you a different perspective as events unfold.

News of my hardcover book release is being picked up across the nation, thanks to a well written press release and the help of my publisher, Mira Publishing, who worked swiftly to get our news out. Press is an important facet of getting books into the hands of your target demographic, and to extend a book’s newsworthiness and reach beyond an author’s own network.

Please contact me if you are an author struggling with garnering effective press. I may be able to offer insight. It takes a community to raise an author! I lean on others too, wherever I can, for help and mentorship.

18. PR-Viz to Release Ranma 1/2 in Newly Re-Mastered 2-In-1 Manga Format

{ED – And this, folks, is the series that started it all for me.  If you enjoy comedy, martial arts, and gender-bending hijinks, give it a spin.  Just prep at for a long ride, because this manga ran forever!}

VIZ MEDIA INVITES FANS TO CATCH THE EXCITING RETURN OF RANMA ½ IN A BRAND NEW OMNIBUS MANGA EDITION

Creator Rumiko Takahashi’s Groundbreaking

Gender-Bending Martial Arts Comedy Returns To North America In A Newly Re-Mastered 2-In-1 Manga Format

San Francisco, CA, February 28, 2014 – The wait is almost over as VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in North America, announces next month’s exciting release of Rumiko Takahashi’s adored manga (graphic novel) series – RANMA ½ – as newly re-mastered 2-in-1 omnibus editions. The opening volume debuts on March 11th, presented for the first time ever in a right-to-left reading format that remains faithful to the original work. RANMA ½ is rated ‘T+’ for Older Teens and will carry a MSRP of $14.99 U.S. / $16.99 CAN.

Ranma Saotome never thought a martial arts training mission to China would turn out like this! Due to an unfortunate accident at the cursed Chinese training ground Jusenkyo, when Ranma and his father get splashed with cold water, papa turns into a giant panda and male Ranma becomes a buxom young woman! Hot water reverses the effect, but only until the next time! Constantly chased by battle-happy martial artists and lovesick suitors of both sexes, what’s a half-boy, half-girl martial artist to do?

“RANMA ½ was one of the first manga series to achieve massive international success, and became a staple of the VIZ Media catalog for over 14 years, making it one of our longest-running titles and one of the longest-running manga series in North America,” says Hope Donovan, Editor. “The return of RANMA ½ in a new 2-in-1 omnibus is an ideal format to revisit the series or enjoy it for the very first time and will allow fans to appreciate Rumiko Takahashi’s classic romantic comedy action series in a whole new way!”

The spotlight on Rumiko Takahashi’s career began in 1978 when she won an honorable mention in Shogakukan’s prestigious New Comic Artist Contest for Those Selfish Aliens. Later that same year, her boy-meets-alien comedy series, Urusei Yatsura, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. This phenomenally successful manga series was adapted into anime format and spawned a TV series and half a dozen theatrical-release movies, all incredibly popular in their own right. Takahashi followed up the success of her debut series with one blockbuster hit after another— Maison Ikkoku ran from 1980 to 1987, Ranma 1/2 from 1987 to 1996, and Inuyasha from 1996 to 2008. Other notable works include Mermaid Saga, Rumic Theater, One-Pound Gospel, and RIN-NE (all also published in North America by VIZ Media).

Takahashi won the Shogakukan Manga Award twice in her career, once for Urusei Yatsura in 1981 and the second time for Inuyasha in 2002. A majority of the Takahashi canon has been adapted into other media such as anime, live-action TV series, and film. Takahashi’s manga, as well as the other formats her work has been adapted into, have continued to delight generations of fans around the world. Distinguished by her wonderfully endearing characters, Takahashi’s work adeptly incorporates a wide variety of elements such as comedy, romance, fantasy, and martial arts. While her series are difficult to pin down into one simple genre, the signature style she has created has come to be known as the “Rumic World.” Rumiko Takahashi is an artist who truly represents the very best from the world of manga.

20. Blogger Blitz: DRAGON RISING by Jaime Rush

If you like paranormal romances, here’s some information about Jaime Rush’s latest series The Hidden.  Read up on her dragon shifters, and then enter for a chance to digital copy of Dragon Rising and Dragon Mine, as well as a $25 gift card at B&N!

DRAGON RISING, A Hidden Novella: Book Prequel #2 (9781455528004)

They are the Hidden.

Not quite human. Far from normal.

And never, ever safe . . .

After her father falls victim to a serial kidnapper, cunning Dragon shifter Lyra Slade is determined to rescue him. When she discovers a clue to his disappearance that leads her to a sexy but aloof stranger, she knows she shouldn’t trust him to help her, but she’s run out of options.

Archer Grant, a descendant of fallen angels, is reluctant to aid the beautiful dragon because her evidence implicates his own brother . . . But when his brother also goes missing, Archer must work with Lyra to uncover the truth. But even as a supernatural desire grows between angel and dragon, they are hunted by an evil force. Faced with the deadliest of dark magick, can even love save them?

Special Letter From Jaime:

Welcome to the DRAGON RISING blog blitz! I’m so excited for the release of the second novella in my brand new paranormal romance series, out from Forever Romance.

The Hidden is a series about humans with the essence of sorcerer gods, dragon gods, or fallen angels who walk the knife’s edge between Miami and a hidden world of magic, passion, and danger.

I thought it would be fun to kick off the series with two intertwining novellas that feature twins. Each novella tackles one aspect of the story’s mystery while bringing in and wrapping up a romance. It was a great introduction for me, because I learned about my world while writing these stories. My twins are Dragonshifters, and I threw both of them together with a lover of a different type just to make things interesting.

DRAGON MINE kicked off the series with Kirin’s story as he joins forces with the one woman he’s loved—and the one who hates him. And while he sorts through one aspect of the mystery, his sister Lira chases a completely different lead … to a cool, aloof descendent of fallen angels who wants nothing to do with a fiery, passionate Dragon. But Archer also has something at stake in solving the mystery of her missing father, and he must reluctantly join forces with the woman who threatens to shatter his composure, expose his secrets—and capture his heart.

If you haven’t been introduced to the Hidden yet, I hope you’ll sign up to win digital copies of DRAGON MINE and DRAGON RISING. And if you aren’t one of the lucky winners, don’t worry! Both e-novellas are available for the low price of $1.99 each and are perfect for devouring together. Then look for back-to-back releases of the full-length novels that further delve into the Hidden—the danger, the passion, and the magic! [Available in both mass market and digital]

Cheers!

Jaime Rush

SMOKE: A Novel

By Ellen Hopkins

Margaret K. McElderry Books/ S&S Children’s; September 10, 2013; $19.99

Two sisters concealing huge secrets set fire to their lies in order to rebuild their futures in the riveting sequel to the New York Times bestseller Burned….

For nearly a decade, #1 New York Times bestseller Ellen Hopkins has captivated readers and changed the lives of countless teens with her emotionally powerful storylines told in free verse that take a piercing and honest look at the serious issues facing today’s young adults. With 4.5 million copies of her books in print, Ellen Hopkins has undoubtedly established herself as one of the biggest stars in fiction. This September, she returns with SMOKE (Margaret K. McElderry Books; September 10, 2013; $19.99; hardcover), the highly anticipated sequel to her bestselling second novel Burned (2007).

In SMOKE, Hopkins continues the story of Pattyn von Stratten, one of eight children in a Mormon household who, along with her mother and sister Jackie, have suffered years of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse at the hands of her father. Trapped in tragic circumstances, Pattyn and Jackie cling to one another for support and a sense of normalcy, but when their father takes the abuse too far one evening and winds up dead, Pattyn is forced to flee. Jackie is left behind with their mother, who allows the truth of what happened that night to be covered up by the domineering leaders of their rigid Mormon community.

Although their father is gone, the dysfunction is not, as Jackie struggles to cope with her mother’s blatant disregard of her suffering and of the disappearance of her oldest child.  Alone and in disguise, Pattyn attempts to start a new life as a migrant worker on a California ranch. But is it possible to rebuild a life when everything you’ve known has burned to ash and lies seem far safer than the truth?

“This book was a long time coming,” says Hopkins. “A sequel I never intended. But far too many of my readers needed closure to the story I told in Burned.” Told from the points of view of Pattyn and Jackie, SMOKE addresses questions of family and faith, domestic abuse, rape, identity, grief and loss, and the ability to love and be loved. It’s a riveting story that explores what it takes to rise from the ashes, put ghosts to rest, and step into the future.

In addition to the release of SMOKE, Hopkins has founded Ventana Sierra, a non-profit youth housing and resource initiative designed to help highly motivated young people build solid career paths toward a more positive future. Ventana Sierra’s mission is to provide necessary services that allow disadvantaged youth (17-25) to become productive citizens. “Over the years, I’ve had the occasion to meet young people who, because of whatever circumstances, wound up on the street,” says Hopkins. “Several were highly motivated, and wanted to finish high school and go on to college, but simply didn’t have the resources to accomplish this goal. I founded Ventana Sierra to help youth-in-need.” Ventana Sierra’s first house opened on June 1st, 2013 in Nevada and a second house is to follow before the end of the year. Their long-range goal is ten houses, five for young women and five for young men.

Ellen Hopkins is the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning author of eight young adult novels, including Crank, Glass, Fallout, Perfect, and Tilt, as well as the adult novels Triangles and Collateral. She lives with her family in Carson City, Nevada, where she has founded Ventana Sierra, a nonprofit youth housing and resource initiative. 24. [PR] GEN Manga Announces the launch of new Korean Comics Magazine, GEN Manhwa!

GEN Manga Announces the launch of new Korean Comics Magazine, GEN Manhwa!

GEN Manhwa, featuring Stone Collector, is available nationwide Feb. 2013!

NEW YORK, NY – GEN Manga Entertainment, Inc. announces the release of GEN Manhwa  (GEN Manhwa, featuring Stone Collector, 54 pages, black and white) will be available Feb. 2013.  (ED. – Check out a sample here.)

GEN Manga welcomes 2013 with exciting new publishing plans! GEN Manga will release monthly indie Korean GEN Mahnwa!

“It’s a non-stop full of action title full of monsters and zombies! Very high grade stuff!”

Stone Collector: Pieces of curse fall from the sky as if to mock the cruelty and evil of humanity. These stones create wretched beasts and the blood of these beasts turn human flesh into the undead. There is only one thing that can destroy these hellish fiends—Jade Stone. This is the story of a Stone Collector. One who wields Jade forged blades. A man whose family was murdered by these evil abominations and he has now vowed to rid the world of the foul presence. —Author: Kevin Han  —Artist: Zom-J

This year GEN will also release a complete list of graphic novels. All new graphic novels with all new content along with the return of old stories with new artwork and new chapters! GEN Manga will release new content every month, this time, in the form of one-shot graphic novels, otherwise known in Japan as tankobon!

The second release 2013 in GEN Manga’s publishing schedule is the indie fan favorite Sorako!

The art of Sorako is fluid, quick, imprecise. Lines aren’t perfectly straight nor details entirely accurate, but the rough drafting style gives the frames energy and character, enhancing the impression that the artist’s goal is to tell Sorako’s story, blemishes and all. —AnimeNation

Sorako lives an ordinary life. And this is an ordinary story. She has friends and family, loves her dog, thinks about life, and occasionally looks for work (kinda). These are the adventures into a typical girl’s life.

—Author & Artist: Takayuki Fujimura

GEN Manga will also release its first Kickstarter to help promote print here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1450575711/sorako-a-manga-about-nothing?ref=live

GEN stories are published nowhere else in the world. These stories are created by the elusive doujin creators in Tokyo’s secret underground circles, otherwise known in the west as independent creators and hard core fans.

Presenting new indie manga circles from Japan, GEN, a monthly publication, will be released in the US and Japan simultaneously. Digital format and print editions for GEN are available now. Based in New York, GEN Manga Entertainment (www.genmanga.com) endeavors to publish new and unseen graphic work from Japan, being in the unique position to bring readers work first, more original and untamed manga will be sure to come!

Miko is a shrine maiden who has never had much success at seeing or banishing spirits. Then she meets Kagura, a sexy demon who feeds off women’s feelings of passion and love. “Acclaimed manga creator Mayu Shinjo enters the supernatural realm in DEMON LOVE SPELL, her new romantic comedy,” says Nancy Thistlethwaite, Editor. “ Our down-to-earth heroine Miko finds herself falling in love with the incubus Kagura.
