3. Valentine Card Sample 2

Since today is Valentine’s Day, I can’t think of a better time to share some work I did this past year for this most-holy day set aside to boost restaurant, flower, chocolate and greeting card sells. Heh. Yesterday I posted a Valentine Bear card, today it’s a Valentine Kitty!

Below: The finished card, front and inside copy.

Below: The first seed of the idea in a quick, thumbnail sketch. When I’m in the concepting stage of a project like this, I’ll do a slew of thumbnail sketches, which I try to do quickly, keeping them simple. If one gets chosen to turn into a card, then I’ll spend more time on flushing out the initial idea.

Below: And since the above thumb was selected to be turned into a card, I then played around with the layout, text, and colors. The sketch on the bottom-right was chosen to go to final by the client, with some slight changes (they didn’t want any lines showing hair on the cat).

5. Cat and Mouse

This is something I did in watercolor. The few things I've posted here have been digital, but I also like to work with "real" media which I'm trying to practice more.

9. A Christmas Commision

Here's another plywood painting that I completed and it's process (for greater detail click on each picture).

1• Create a confident drawing that will show you how to create your gradients and values (based on a greyscale drawing). Get it approved by your client.

2•For a painting where the texture is important, choose your canvas wisley. I pulled about a round dozen sheets of pokey plywood off the hardware stores shelves before I found just the right "chunk" for this image. Tell the person who cuts out your block of plywood that it's for art and yes, you know canvases are cheap down at the local art store...!

3• Protect Your Painting before it's even started. Give it several good (thick) coatings of Multi Purpose Acylic Polymer so that weird chemicals don't leak into the painting over the years destroying the values you create. THEN! Protect your paint (it doesn't come cheap after all...) by Gessoing your surface. This will give your paint an extra "grip" or "mile" so that you don't have to layer it on really thick. I paint my gesso on in several layers in different directions so that the brush strokes aren't going to create a distracting pattern. Thing to Remember: Your brush strokes on every layer of every painting can help aid your composition!

5• Block in Dark Colours.

6• Think Details and Light. The concept is to have your darker colours in the "Valley" part of the plywood ridges and the light colours on the "peaks". This will really make the texture pop. For details do what you normally do, fill in the valleys and peaks with similar values.

10. IF : Riding Bare-Backwards

Zappo the cat left home at a very young age to join the circus. Till this day, Zappo always rides his flying pig backwards because his mother long ago said, " Always remember where you came from."

Okay, so Zappo took it literally.

15. Meet Tokyo

Here's an Illustration based on my Kitty Tokyo. The only difference is that my cat is black, but I thought that white was a better choice art-wise. I am doing a series right now about childhood's best buddies and have also done illustrations with a doxie and a bunny. You can see them here, along with a pic of Tokyo :) Thanks for your input!

19. IF : Life's Extremes

What a fitting word for my 1 year Illo Friday anniversary! It's also been a year since I moved into my studio. I went from trying to find time to create art to having my own space not only to create art, but to display it at monthly art walks and open studio events. That's a huge extreme from painting at my kitchen table!

The other extreme has been becoming a blogger and joining the Illustration Friday community. Not being much of a computer person other than doing a little research and sending emails, I think I've settled in quite nicely with the weekly challenges. It's just what I needed to jump-start my brain and my drawing hand again. As a matter of fact, Fridays have become my favorite day.

And finally, the other extreme is how I went from doubting my abilities to gaining a little self-esteem encouraging me to keep at it. It's all because of the support I get from you. Thanks for helping me grow and stretch and to keep on doing what I do even when I draw or paint something crappy . It's all about the process and doing what we love.

Last night was the opening of my "Wallflowers" and "Best of Illustration Friday" show at studio lolo. It was a smash hit despite my anxiety. ( Sorry, due to a camera malfunction there are no pictures.) I just added pictures of the gallery above, just before the opening :)
Happy Anniversary to me!

20. i play dead

Just a little quickie today, more of a doodle actually. There seems to be a theme going on around here - cat toys. And they all belong to this girl HERE.

21. zhm - SEW A PILLOW

I’m used to working according to specs (arch.), and as in this weekly challenge (sew a pillow) there were no specs about the size, material, or purpose… I actually SEW A PILLOW; a little plasticine pillow for a little cute kitty, but it is a pillow after all!

Hope I was convincing and this pillow counts for the challenge, but if it doesn’t…I won’t be so disappointed because I really enjoyed sewing it! (By the way, sewing plasticine is creepy!)

22. Dirty Little Secret

I never wanted to tell anyone this, but my cat has a drinking problem. She goes through a bottle of "Mewlot" a night, and to make matters worse she eats donuts too! It's just so embarassing.

There...now you know our dirty little secret.

25. Cat

I have tried using a cut out technique in photoshop on a few of my pieces. I always like them better than my other techniques. It gives my work a more graphic look and energy. I think I may be doing it a lot more. Instead of drawing out everything first and using the pencil as my outline in the final, I build the illustration as I go in photoshop using the lasso to make shapes on different layers and then apply color and then texture. I like the drop shadow in choice places which calls out a main part or whatever. I am always drawn to children's art and also those diarama (spelling?) projects from school. I see me going here more but not always because I love pencil sketching so much. I feel that different techniques are good as long as I keep my character style looking simalar so I don't confuse the client. Okay, enough rambling for now. Everyone have a great weekend.
