26. Children's Picture Book Review: Maggie Mae, Detective Extraordinaire: The Case of the Missing Cookies

The sweet smell of super-duper snicker doodles wafts through the air as Grandma prepares for the bake sale. Singing away as she wraps each dozen into plastic bags, she is astonished that bags are missing. Calling on her granddaughter, Maggie Mae, to help solve the mystery of the missing cookies, Maggie Mae puts her detective skills to the test. Interviewing each member of the household, grandfather, brother and even Toby the dog she attempts to catch the culprit and to unearth what the whistle noise before a bag of snicker doodles goes missing has to do with it.

Join YA and Kids' author, Margo Dill as she creates a mystery of intrigue that will have the reader jumping to their own conclusions in hopes of solving the mystery before Maggie Mae, Detective Extraordinaire does.  Jack Foster’s trademark illustrations provide sweetness throughout.

29. KidLit Author, Mary Esparza-Vela Visits, Write What Inspires You

Welcome Mary! I'm delighted you penned an article for Write What Inspires You to share your writing journey…

Thank you for the opportunity to talk about my books, published by Guardian Angel Publishing. While growing up, my grandfather always told us stories before we went to bed. To me, this was better than watching TV. I credit my Grandpa with inspiring me to become a writer. His large eyes grew in size and the tone of his voice changed when he described the suspenseful moments in his stories.

As a child, I loved to read and write. I had great teachers who played an important role in helping me master my grammar and writing skills. Later, as an adult, I wrote articles for religious publications and worked as an Editorial Assistant. When I write for children, I try to make the stories humorous and entertaining. My husband is my writing partner and he usually comes up with the ideas.

My recently released picture book, EL POLLITO EXTRAÑO, was also published in English as THE ODD CHICK. The English version received a Five-Star Rating from Reader’s Favorite. I now have a total of four award-winning picture books and two short stories.

I am also the inventor of three unique, award-winning dolls named Kyzzie, Sweetz, and Hunee. Their first book adventure, YOU CAN’T TAKE THE DINOSAUR HOME, received a Book of the Year Award and a Five-Star Rating. Recently, I learned that it was an Award Finalist in a national competition. The book has also been published in Spanish as NO PUEDES LLEVARTE EL DINOSAURIO A CASA. It is about three tiny space tots who travel around the universe looking for fun and adventure. I call them LUV-BEAMS® because they’re full of love.

You’re welcome to see my books and dolls at www.luv-beams.com and www.marysdollsandbooks.com.

BIO:

Mary Esparza-Vela is an award-winning author who has written articles for religious publications and various online non-profit organizations. She credits her husband and writing partner for her story ideas. Some of her picture books received Book of the Year Awards and Five-Star Ratings. A number of her books have been published in Spanish. Mary is also the patented inventor of three unique plush dolls that received Preferred Choice and Seal of Excellence awards. The dolls, called LUV-BEAMS® were featured in Toy Directory’s TDMonthly Magazine as “winning toys.” Their first adventure, You Can’t Take the Dinosaur Home, is available in English and Spanish from Guardian Angel Publishing and Amazon. Her books and dolls may be seen on her websites: www.luv-beams.com and www.marysdollsandbooks.com.

Mary, thanks for visiting. Congratulations on your awards. Wishing you continued success!

About Hockey Agony: Peer Pressure and Honesty many times go hand-in-hand. What is Larry to do when his teammate asks him to cheat when he is given the responsibility to run the clock during the big hockey game? Outwardly, it may seem he will follow suit, but his conscious tells him otherwise at the moment of truth.

The colorful, kid-friendly Story Monster Approved seal attracts the attention of young readers much more than a sticker intended for adult scrutiny. Kids know when they see the Story Monster Approved patch it means children their own age enjoyed the book and are recommending they read it, too. How do they know that? Because after books pass the first round of rigorous judging – which is done by industry experts, the books are then judged by a panel of youth judges who must also endorse the books before they can receive the official seal of approval.
"Who better to judge children’s books than the children who read them?” explains Linda F. Radke, president of Five Star Publications, Inc., the same company that launched the Dragonfly Book Awards program, now in its fourth year. "Judging these books gives children a wonderful sense of importance and responsibility. Some of our judging coordinators have told us that students who usually don’t enjoy reading or have difficulty reading have gotten a much-needed boost due to their judging responsibilities and have requested to serve as judges again."
Authors interested in having their books considered for Story Monster Approved designation should visit www.StoryMonsters.com and download an entry form. Books are divided into the following categories with distinctions made between fiction and nonfiction: Preschool to Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, and Grades 4-6.

Never Say Boo to a Frilly

If the title of Margot Finke’s latest children’s book, Never Say Boo to a Frilly, doesn’t grab your attention, I am not sure what will. My curiosity was captivated the moment I read the title. What in the world is a frilly anyway? And boy was I surprised.

Margot Finke, the transplanted Aussie creates a rhyming children’s book of fun filled facts of three Australian critters, the Frillneck Lizard, the Rainbow Birds and The Tasmanian Devil. Each rhyming adventure immerses the reader on a ride into each critters world, behavior features and survival ability. To aid in the learning process, Finke has included an enhanced vocabulary word reference within the book and an Educator’s Guide available at http://myplace.frontier.com/~mfinke/Teacher%27s%20Guide.htm#frilly. Margot Finke’s distinctive storytelling style and expert rhyming brings forth an exhilarating learning experience, without realizing the learning has begun.

36. Award-winning children's author, Penelope Anne Cole is Guest Author at Write What Inspires You!

I'm tickled pink to have Penelope Anne Cole as the guest author at Write What Inspires You! Penny and I first met through Guardian Angel Publishing and we have developed a lovely cyberspace friendship. It is my hope to meet in person some day, possibly at the next GAP Angel gathering. Lynda, hint, hint, hint….

Without further ado I'm pleased to share award-winning children's author, Penelope Anne Cole with her guest post, "What Inspires Me to Write." Welcome Penny!

What Inspires Me to Write?
by Penelope Anne Cole

I’m a parent, a teacher, and a tutor. Reading literature and writing have always been a part of my life from the first book I read on my own, to the first story I wrote in school. Since then I’ve been writing, much of it in memoir form and journals. In elementary school, I wrote some short stories featuring kids who struggled with hurts and problems. I wish I still had those stories. I remember the emotion from those early stories actually made me cry. Like most writers, I love the written word and want my stories published and read.

I got back into writing children’s stories when inspired by my neighbor’s autistic son who turned ten and celebrated the magic of “double digits!” That gave me an idea for a children’s story about a boy who had magical powers to fix things. He kept his magic a secret from his family until his friend Lily began to suspect. What should he do? Telling her would be a risk. He confides in his Grandma Nonie. Matthew has several problems and challenges to deal with in my story.

At first, I thought Magical Matthew would be a “stand alone” story, but then at the end I introduced a twist that led me to the next story, Magical Mea. What if his little sister also has magic? What would she do? Will she be like Matt or will she rebel? Then I had a series. The third book is Magical Mea Goes to School, where Mea has to learn how to do the things all kids learn in school and she has to learn to do magic secretly. Magical M and M brings twin boys into the family. Will they have magic? And if they do, will they be like Matt or Mea? I even have an idea for a fifth book to close out the series.

Often ideas come to me when I’m out walking. After the Magical series, I was inspired to write a remembrance of spending time with my brothers over the year at our Grandma’s house called, My Grandma’s Pink House. It is set in the 1950’s, when we kids were free to roam all around her property and the neighborhood pretty much on our own. In the story, Grandma does what grandmothers did then, cooked, cleaned, planted, harvested, canned, sewed, knitted, read stories, and sang songs to us.

Another children’s book I’ve written is about eating food from other countries and cultures, called I’m Going to My Friend’s House for Dinner. Lexie talks with her friends about strange and different foods they’ve eaten as she looks forward to eating dinner at her Nigerian friend’s house. Will the food be weird or yucky? I thought it would help to show our multicultural society with respect to food. Those are my shorter children’s stories, inspired by events, memories, people, even foods. These two stories are ready to be submitted for publishing.

I have two longer stories—novel length—that I’m working on. These were inspired by books, articles, and stories I read or heard. One is a historical novel set after the Vietnam War involving racism, grief, loss, and survival, The Perfect Home. The other is a time travel fantasy that has historical elements about Amazon warrior-priestesses, The Young Amazons. These are so much harder for me because of multiple points of view, longer plot arcs, movement through beginning, middle, and end. But I want to see these through to completion and publication.

Penny, it's a pleasure hosting you today! I'm looking forward to profiling you in the August issue of my Write What Inspires You! newsletter!

What Reviewers Are Saying

“The book is an enjoyable read and makes children aware of poaching and illegalities associated with it. During times of dwindling marine life and plants, it is important to save them. This book teaches children to protect marine life and endangered animals.” ~ Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers' Favorite Five Star Review

“A Sandy Grave is a good fast read for the individual reader or for parents to read to their younger children. It engages the reader and opens up a dialogue between parents and children on the many different issues in the book. Most of all, McDine shows that children can respect authority without fearing it and parents and those in roles of responsibility can respect the contribution that children can make to society.” ~ Reviewed by Rebecca’s Writing Services

40. Children's Book Review - There's A Lion in the House by Mary Esparza-Vela

Mary Esparza-Vela’s children’s book entitled, There’s A Lion in the House along with Jack Foster’s hysterical illustrated cover immediately made my mind race as to what the author had in store for her readers.  Hooked from the onset I immediately opened the book.

The youngest of four rabbit brothers, Robby, was the silliest of the bunch. Always the jokester, Robby thrived on teasing his siblings every chance he got with good old-fashioned pranks. Will the mention of the lion that almost ate their Grandpa in the woods one day make his imagination run wild or did the lion actually find it’s way into their home one evening. What is Robby to do when he hears loud roars during the night from within their house and when he tries to tell his brother’s each of them ignores him? Will Robby be brave and search where the noise is coming from or will he hide under his blankets?

Mary Esparza-Vela’s There’s A Lion in the House is a delightful tale of sibling antics that will have the reader laughing out loud throughout the story. Ms. Esparza-Vela’s expert storytelling will make There’s A Lion in the House a cherished book for years to come and I’m sure will be worn around the edges from the constant reading.

Jack Foster’s brilliant and hilarious illustrations enhance Ms. Esparza-Vela’s story to the highest level of enjoyment for both children and parents.

43. Going Global

I received some great news from my publisher that all of my books are going to be available for sale in China and other Asian markets.  Guardian Angel Publishing has finished negotiating with an agent to distribute English language books.  This is coupled with a mandate in China that all school children should learn English.  So I’m really excited that my books will be open to such a huge market.  Also in the works is distribution to India and other emerging markets where my books are not available.  I’ll keep you posted on any further developments.  But I couldn’t wait to spread the word.  How cool is that?

45. A Rainbow of Birds by Janet Halfmann

rainbow

Papa Cardinal tells his chicks a story of how birds gave the world the rainbow in a story that has been passed down through generations.

A Rainbow of Birds by Janet Halfmann is a vibrant story of color that celebrates the tradition of storytelling. In this imaginative idea that capitalizes on legends and the ancient art of storytelling, children find a fanciful and fun story of how birds came together–sometimes after a squabble–to create the world’s first rainbow. In her trademark habit of educating and entertaining, Halfmann has included fun facts about rainbows, the magic of leprechauns, and rainbow activities and crafts.

Artist Jack Foster has truly outdone himself with the vibrant and occasionally zany characters depicted in this story. I always enjoy Foster’s work, but this book is so stunning it warrants special mention. Coupled with Halfmann’s delightful text, I could imagine and almost hear the story taking place through my office window.

Nature lovers, lovers of legends, and those who enjoy books where storytelling plays a role will want to snatch this one up right away.

Highly recommended!
