1. Happy Thanksgiving - Be #Thankful

I'm a few days early, since I do not plan on being on social media during the Thanksgiving weekend, but rather to savor each and every moment and to enjoy the company of friends and family in realtime.

For many years now I've been making a concerted effort to remain #thankful everyday and to repel the negativity of others, especially within social media. We have a choice in this life, be sucked down the dark hole of despair or to knock out the darkness and live in the glorious light of a positive attitude.

I #journal daily, which I find helpful to wash away my fears and to uncover the #blessings that abound. I urge you to try journaling. Your words are for your eyes only, hence making it a safe haven to explore your joys and sorrows. It's quite therapeutic!

My wish for you and your families today and beyond, is to be true to yourself and to remain #thankful of the many #blessings that the good Lord has bestowed upon you.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

The Changing Face of Reviews

Editor/Author/Publicist Writes Ultimate Guide
on Getting, Writing, and Using Reviews

“I think Getting Great Book Reviews Frugally and Ethically will sell like hot cakes. It’s a chicken and egg situation. When you get reviews you get noticed and more people notice you from that. But how to get reviews without paying sometimes hundreds of dollars with no guarantee and how to ask without being a nuisance puts authors in a quandary. I will be first in line when it comes out! Please keep me posted!!!!” ~ Fiona Ingram, award winning children’s author of The Chronicles of the Stone middle grade adventure series, http://www.chroniclesofthestone.com.
How To Get Great Book Reviews Frugally and Ethically:
The ins and outs of using free reviews to build and sustain a writing career

Los Angeles, CA  - - The Web—more explicitly Amazon and other online bookstores—have changed the face and nature of reviews in the last couple of decades. Carolyn Howard-Johnson, known for her author advocacy and how-to books for writers—has released a new book (the 3rd) in her multi award-winning and bestselling (at many different levels) HowToDoItFrugally series of books for writers.

With the release of Howard-Johnson’s How To Get Great Book Reviews Frugally and Ethically: The ins and outs of using free reviews to build and sustain a writing career authors—both traditionally published and self-published—can now approach the daunting task of the whole spectrum of reviews from getting and using reviews online and in prestigious review journals efficiently. She also shows in the 340 page book, how to writing reviews as part of an author’s overall campaign and authors can use review of their own books and the ones they write toward building both a market for their book and building their own writing career.

This new how-to book is third in Howard-Johnson’s multi award-winning How To Do It Frugally Series. The first book in the series, The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won’t, was named USA Book News “Best Professional Book 2004," and Book Publicists of Southern California honored it with their Irwin Award. Now in its second edition, Bookbaby.com calls it a “classic” and it has helped more than 40,000 authors since its release. The second in the series, The Frugal Editor, is her most award-winning of the series including honors from Day Poynter’s Global E-Book Award, USA Book News, Reader Views Literary Award, Next Generation Indie Book Award, and won a special Marketing Award from New  Millennium  Book Awards. It is now available at http://bit.ly/GreatBkReviews.

In the works are books like The Frugal Self-Publisher: The Quick, Down and Dirty Guide for Publishing Anything for Any Reason—Personal Professional or Poetic.

The author says, "This series is the result of a combination of experience gained through trial and error in promoting my own literary works and my professional experience in marketing, PR, journalism, editing and publishing in general."

Howard-Johnson was an instructor for UCLA Extension's Writers' Program for nearly a decade, was named Woman of the Year in Arts and Entertainment by members of the California legislature, and was given her community’s Diamond Award and honored for her work with tolerance by her city's Ethics Committee.  In addition to dozens of literary awards and honors, she was also featured by Pasadena Weekly  in their “Pasadena Women Who Make Life Happen” for her advocacy in the publishing industry.

5. Calm...

I often envy those that can remain CALM in any situation that is thrown them. How do they do it and not allow others hyper-ness or negativity distill their sense of calm?

For many years my reaction to situations I could not control or the added pressure of life circumstances was to become anxious and tense. Overtime through different human relationships and reading about what meditation can do for your mind, body and soul I began “practicing” it on a daily basis. Once meditation became a habit and I was able to invoke deep breathing practices even with my eyes open while tending to the situation at hand, my inner self has become calmer with a step by step reaction to most situations.

By taking a proactive approach of small steps rather than focusing on the big picture, I’m able to dissect most situations with a sense of calm. Not to say I didn’t have my moments.

I am a true believer of meditation and prayer to invoke a sense of calm in one’s life and highly recommend you giving it a chance. After 20 plus days of focusing on a sense of calm, it will become a habit you will cherish.

I’d enjoy hearing what you do to invoke calmness to your daily life. Thanks for visiting!

6. Memorial Day Prayer

On this Memorial Day, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom.

May the examples of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops, and fill their homes and their lives with Your strength and peace.

In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and justice, and thus, seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

8. Happy Mother's Day 2016

Yet another Mother's Day is upon us and as I reflect on my own motherhood my thoughts naturally go to my own mother. My heart swells with joy as to how she is always the wing beneath my wings. Even during those turbulent years of raising me.

My mother may not have liked my choices or behavior at times, but what always remained was her steadfast unconditional love. For a mother to state her disappointment in bad choices and behavior is not saying she doesn't love you, it's saying she doesn't approve. First and foremost a mother's job is in guidance and love, not being your best friend while she is raising you. That hopefully comes later in your adulthood.

I often talk to my girlfriends that we either repel or absorb our upbringing. For me, I'm glad I am the later!

Thank you mom (Lorraine) for teaching me unconditional love and I know it reflects in how I am raising my own daughters.

Wishing all the mother's out there I very happy Mother's Day and if you are without your own mother, my thoughts and prayers go out to you.

God Bless!

9. C. Lee McKenzie - Cover Reveal - Sign of the Green Dragon

I'm delighted to share in the excitement of C. Lee McKenzie's cover reveal of her latest middle grade book...

Sign of the Green Dragon

Drum roll please...

Coming August 2016

  • Paperback: 181 pages

  • Publisher: C. Lee McKenzie; 1 edition (August 3, 2016)

  • Language: English

  • ISBN-10: 1532721250

  • ISBN-13: 978-1532721250

Synopsis: This hasn’t been the best year for Sam, and it just got worse. Right when he thought he’d found a permanent home, his finicky guardian tells him he’s shipping Sam off to private school. This means Sam won’t bat for his team, and if he doesn’t, Haggarty Elementary won’t win the baseball championship again this year. His two teammates, Joey and Roger, are determined to stash him in their secret cave—at least until he brings in the winning run.

While the boys explore the hideout, an earthquake crumbles a wall, revealing a hidden room—and it’s not empty. A dragon-carved chest opens to reveal a human skeleton, its hand-bones clutching a note with a crudely drawn map. At the top of the map is scribbled, 1859.

Sam, Joey and Roger learn about a treasure lying in wait, if only they can locate something called the Dragon Twin, reveal the truth about an old murder, and return a person named Mei Ling to her ancestors in China.

The boys are up for the challenge. But how? They only have the map showing the way to an old mining town, and some strange symbols they can’t understand. None of them can make sense of the note. Who’s Mei Ling? And what the heck is a Dragon Twin?

With time running out before he’s sent packing, Sam and his friends set out on an adventure that has much higher stakes than any baseball championship—one that gets them into trouble with  a modern crime, pits them against ancient Chinese dragons, and reveals the true meaning of treasure for each of them.

To continue from yesterday’s post on meditation, nourishment of the body through healthy eating habits and exercise will create a better mental outlook on your day and your meditation sessions. I find that when I slip from my healthy eating habits, I often times feel yogurt, fruits and granola on a daily basis as well as a balanced diet of proteins and dairy.

11. M is for Meditation - #AtoZChallenge

The word of the day is MEDITATION...

Quite some time ago I became interested in meditation and the benefits in practicing it on a daily basis would do for my mind, body and soul. Pleasantly I have had continuous positive results where it calms my mind and I approach most stressful moments and day to day tasks with ease and peace. I highly recommend the meditation CD’s of Dyan Garris. Her voice during the guided meditation sessions are calming and peaceful to me. I suggest that you visit Dyan's website and explore the samples of the mp3 recordings before purchase to ensure you feel a calmness with their voice too.

<!--[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE <![endif]-->
I am interested in hearing if you currently meditate or that you may look into meditating. Your meditation sessions don’t need to be long, often times 10-15 minutes is all I need. I definitely comes easier the more you practice meditation. Good luck and thanks for visiting.

12. L is for Laugh - #AtoZChallenge

The word of the day is LAUGH...

I dare you to make a point of laughing at yourself at least once a day and through at the day. The stress release you will feel is inspiring! It’s important not to take yourself too serious! If we do, we will end up as one wrinkled prune! I dare you, laugh at yourself… it will be fun…I promise!

My most recent laugh at myself moment. I was singing at the top of my lungs to my curling iron, when my daughter walked into the room and instead of stopping immediately I began cracking up and kept singing and she joined in with me. Priceless! In the past I would have stopped and acted like she didn’t catch me! So fun to be spontaneous!

Have you laughed at yourself lately? If yes, please share why. Thanks for visiting!

13. K is for Kind - #AtoZChallenge

The word of the day is KIND...

Since Tim McGraw’s song Humble and Kind has become my daily mantra, I’m reposting his wonderful song, “Humble and Kind” again today.

Seriously, if we all followed this on a daily basis the world would be a better place!

14. J is for Joyful - #AtoZChallenge

The word of the day is JOYFUL...

I dare you to journal daily as to what you are joyful for and watch the negativity in your life wash away.

To add to it even though I’m sure you have heard of this idea before, but here goes anyway… take a jar and create a colorful label with “What I’m Joyful For” and for one year on a daily basis write one joyful statement on a piece of paper, fold it up and place it in the jar. Come New Year’s Eve shake out the joyful statement and enjoy reading about your year of abundance.

To begin, what I’m joyful for. My husband, my husband’s brilliant doctors, my daughters, our health, our home, our extended family, our friends, our jobs, our finances to pay the bills, etc.

17. G is for Generous - #AtoZ Challenge

The word of the day is GENEROUS...

<!--[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE <![endif]-->
To be generous of one’s time and to pass along willingly one’s expertise to the next person coming up in the ranks is an imperative way of paying it forward. It’s important to remember we were all there at one time of being the newbie and feeling like a fish out of water. What a comfort it is for someone to receive your generosity with the simplest of statements, “you are doing just fine, keep up the great work.”

Not too long ago, my daughters and I played tourist in NYC and visited the Brooklyn Bridge and Little Italy. After enjoying a scrumptious lunch we headed across the street for dessert. The bakery was bustling with business and it was apparent one of the waiters was new and being trained. Luckily for him, his training came before the San Genaro Festival. The look of being overwhelmed was quite apparent and when we were leaving, I went to him and simply said, “You are doing great, don’t give up.” He responded, with an astonished thank you and we went about our day. Upon exiting the bakery, my daughter said, “Mom, that was so nice of you, you didn’t have to do that.”  My reply, “always remember you will be the newbie at one time or another and the generous ‘at a boy’ can make or break your day.” Mom you should have seen him, when you turned to leave, he actually looked like he was standing taller.” Needless to say, without looking for anything in return, that statement from my daughter still makes my heart soar.

What do you do to be generous to those in your life or those that you meet briefly? Looking forward to hearing all about how generosity in your life is a ripple effect. Thanks for visiting!

18. F is for Flexibility - #atozchallenge

<!--[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE <![endif]-->
I don’t know why, but for some reason when I think of the word FLEXIBILITY it amuses me. Before I had children, 21 and 18 years ago, I have to readily admit I was not a flexible individual. You would think by getting married 27 years ago, flexibility would have been easy for me, nope not for me. Even at the young age of 22, when I married I was very set in my ways. It was basically, my way or the highway. Thankfully my husband has always been a go with the flow flexible person. Over the years though, I’ve learned to relax more and more and to go with the flow… hence creating flexibility in my life without even realizing it. My epiphany to this new found flexibility? I’ve learned there is more than one way to do things and to think outside the box is much more exciting rather than staying the narrow minded course of my way or the highway.

What do you do to stay flexible and more enjoyable to be around?

Looking forward to hearing about your tips! Thanks for visiting!

20. D is for Decency - #atozchallenge 2016

DECENCY is a powerful way of living life with a positive attitude towards fellow human beings and all living creatures. The act of simple courtesy of holding the door open, a pleasant hello, allowing the car alongside you to merge in ahead of you, listening to and respecting someone’s opinion (even if it differs from yours) goes a long way in creating a true sense of decency. The list is endless.
It’s not difficult at all, if you think before you react with a positive response to most situations it will surely result in harmony with others that you may not have realized before.

About Dee and Deb Off They Go, Kindergarten First Day Jitters: The anxiety of finding one's own place and friends in kindergarten without the comfort of having her fraternal twin sister nearby at first overwhelms Dee. Until she realizes even without her twin, Dee and her classmates for the most part are in the same boat. Suggested age range for readers: 3-8

About the Author: Donna McDine is a multiple award-winning children's author. She writes and moms from her home in the historical hamlet Tappan, NY. The colorful, kid-friendly Story Monster Approved seal attracts the attention of young readers much more than a sticker intended for adult scrutiny. Kids know when they see the Story Monster Approved patch it means children their own age enjoyed the book and are recommending they read it, too. How do they know that? Because after books pass the first round of rigorous judging – which is done by industry experts, the books are then judged by a panel of youth judges who must also endorse the books before they can receive the official seal of approval.
            "Who better to judge children’s books than the children who read them?” explains Linda F. Radke, president of Five Star Publications, Inc., the same company that launched the Dragonfly Book Awards program, now in its fourth year. "Judging these books gives children a wonderful sense of importance and responsibility. Some of our judging coordinators have told us that students who usually don’t enjoy reading or have difficulty reading have gotten a much-needed boost due to their judging responsibilities and have requested to serve as judges again."

24. What People are Saying About Dee and Deb Off They Go ~ Kindergarten First Day Jitters

What people are saying....

An adorable story of twin sisters and their first day of kindergarten. They are in separate classrooms and are concerned who they will have to share their secrets and to play with. Dee meets a girl named Casey in her class, and after a fun day with her, shares with Deb about her day and learns about Deb's day as well.

There are no more than one or two sentences on each page, which makes for easy reading. The illustrations are bright and beautiful. I hope the author will share more of Dee and Deb's adventures with us in the future. ~ Teresa Kander, Amazon reviewer

~~~~~~~~~~
Award-winning author Donna M. McDine has written an adorable picture book about the first day of kindergarten. She uses her first hand knowledge (having a twin sister of her own) to share what it might be like for separated twins on the first day of kindergarten.
Many kids have fears regarding the first day of school, but this first day of school is especially worrisome for twins Dee and Deb.
Deb and Dee head off for their first day of kindergarten together, but become separated when Dee goes to the K1 classroom and Deb goes to K2.
The rest of the book centers on Dee and her fears of being lost and alone without her twin sister for back up. But as usually is the case, Dee makes a friend, and the day flies by. Reunited at the end of the school day, Dee and Deb have so much more to talk about with their own accounts and experience of the day. And Dee can hardly wait for tomorrow.
The colorful and contagious illustrations are provided by Jack Foster.
<!--[if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE <![endif]-->
He shows not just the similarities between the twins (their too-cute pigtails and matching outfits), but also their differences (Dee and Deb must be fraternal twins.)
A truly entertaining book for any child embarking on the journey to kindergarten. ~ Suzanne Puvis, author of Destined for Deception
This month I'm focusing on....
Definition: noun
1.
the quality of being authenticgenuineness.
To live one's life with authenticity is to be true to one's self and to let your talents bloom. Don't compare yourself to others, for that will certainly stall you in your quest for success. Can we live a life with authenticity beyond the scope of our professional talents? Of course we can. It's important to strive to live a life of pure genuineness in all that we do. From the simplest most mundane tasks to the more complicated tasks in our lives, if we strive for authenticity it will put a spring in our step and our hearts desire will soar.
Here's to your authenticity!!
