1. A couple of cool things...

I haven't posted much here in months because my computer likes to crash while bloggong for some reason. I'm giving it a go and living on the edge today because I wanted to get the word out about a couple of cool things.

I'll be at the Sheboygan Children's Book Festival on Saturday, Oct 13th with Sarah Weeks, Ilsa J. Bick, Jacqueline Houtman, and Julie Halpern, where we'll discuss the roles of family in novels for children and teens. The panel will be moderated by Mitch Teich of WUWM radio and should be fun! I've never been to the Kohler Arts Center and this is a great way to get there. :-) We'll be signing our books afterward, too.

I'll also be presenting Writing for Children & Teens: What Aspiring Authors Need to Know on Sunday at 1:30. I'll be signing Mercy Lily afterward as well.

More info is here: http://sheboyganchildrensbookfestival.org/ and it looks like a great event to take young kids, grandkids, tween & teens too!

Lastly, I received word that I'll be including in an upcoming edition of Contemporary Authors Reference, a large volume of short profiles of authors. I think every author is listed in these volumes but I was especially tickled by it because I used one of those massive books when I was writing Lois Lowry's biography so now to be in it, is kind of cool. :-)

Summer went by super fast and was busy, fun, and too flipping hot! Today is sunny and cool and the windows are open. Ahhhh. Enjoy your day!

2. School Visits & Skype Visits

Cindy Lord blogged about school visits this morning and showed some thank you letters she received and they’re so sweet! I’ve been a friend and follower of Cindy for years and always enjoy her posts, especially when she shares those student notes.

In my day job, I’m a school library assistant and am around K-8 students every day. Out of all the duties I do—check out, check in, re-shelve, process incoming orders, process discards, pull units for teachers, etc., it’s the booktalks that I present to groups almost daily and the individual help I offer to students choosing a book that’s the most rewarding part of my job. That interaction, whether it’s with 30 kids or 1, leaves me with a smile on face and in my heart. When I introduce a book or series, whether it’s Little House on the Prairie to a 3rd grader, or The Hunger Games to an 8th grader, I’m filled with satisfaction and pride.

Now, doing author visits and Skype visits as an author...well, it fills me with that same satisfaction and pride time ten! I recently presented to a class of 3rd graders and also to a group of high school students and had a blast! Talking to students about my books and offering writing advice to them is as rewarding as seeing my novel in Barnes and Noble. Years ago, I honestly thought I’d be a bit nervous doing author visits, but I’m not! (okay...maybe a teeny bit, right before things begin, but then I relax and enjoy it). I’ve done plenty of presentations on the craft of writing to authors, teachers, and librarians, and hope to continue to offer those as well. For 2012/2013, I’d love to schedule more school visits and Skype sessions!

Back to writing....

3. Skype an Author and Great Review of Mercy Lily!

Happy New Year! 2012 is going to be made of amazing. I just feel it! It's starting out with a bang!

The January/Feburary 2012 issue of Library Media Connection ran a great review of Mercy Lily and designated it a recommended title. Yay! After a short synopsis, the review reads:

"This book will be one that girls will not be able to put down. While the euthanasia storyline is key to the book, Lily's sense of loss will ring true. Lily learns that she doesn't need to be quite as strong as she thought -- people will be there for her when she needs them most."

And today, I signed up to be part of Kate Messner's World Read Aloud Day via Skype. More info is here on Kate's blog http://www.katemessner.com/skype-with-an-author-on-world-read-aloud-day-2012/ Thanks, Kate! It should be a fun time for everyone involved!

I hope everyone has a fantastic 2012!

4. Questions About Parodies & Retellings

While I'm working on my funny middle grade & taking notes for a YA thriller, I'd like to begin querying agents with a picture book I've written and am not 100% sure if it would be considered a parody or retelling. My story is basically a modernized version of an old song, but with a twist. I've gotten great feedback on this manuscript and it's time to do something with it. :-)

I know there's lots of great retellings and parodies out there and I'm not sure what the difference between the two is. I work in a school library and have done a bit of comparison research there and in bookstores, etc. We have some shelved in fiction, and some in nonfiction. (I'm not clear how that decision is made). I'm thinking of the "House That Jack Built," "I Know and Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," and "Twas the Night Before Christmas."

Before I begin shopping it, I'd like to be informed about the legalities of using original stories/songs to create new ones, as far as copyrights and permissions. If anyone is able to shed some light on this, I'd be grateful.

Thanks!
Lisa

5. Mercy Lily & Stephenie Meyer bio promo & Signed Copies

Double the fun! (that should be triple the fun!)

My publicist at Flux alerted me to this amazing review of Mercy Lily by Teen blogger, Lauren, and it just made me so happy to read her words! (I think Flux is pretty happy, too! :) Check it out here: http://laurenscrammedbookshelf.blogspot.com/2011/11/mercy-lily-by-lisa-albert.html

Lauren really got it and her last line blew me away with joy. "Heartwarming yet heartbreaking, Lisa Albert’s Mercy Lily is one of the best contemporary YA reads of the year! I can’t suggest it highly enough!"  She also posted it on Amazon and Goodreads!!

A second bit of fun news has to do with the movie release of BREAKING DAWN Part 1!! Who's going? I am!

In anticipation of the movie and for the love for all things Twilight and Stephenie Meyer, my nonfiction publisher, Enslow, and I thought it'd be fun to run a little behind-the-scenes of writing her biography. You can read it here and see the cute the high school prom photo of Stephenie and her date! Enslow sent word about this write-up to 55,000 librarians! I know!! :-)
http://www.enslow.com/htmlnasp.asp?file=T44_Stephenie_Meyer.html&utm_source=MagnetMail&utm_medium=email&[email protected]&utm_content=T44_Library_StephMeyer&utm_campaign=A%20

Also, I've had several inquiries about how to get signed copies of books from me. If you haven't ordered Mercy Lily, but would like to -- and want a signed copy -- please let me know! I would love to sign books for anyone who'd like one!! Leave your email address in the comments and I'll contact you or send me a note at writes4kids (at) wi.rr (dot) com

I'm feeling very thankful today and it's not even Thankful Thursday yet.

6. Mercy Lily Launch - Ilsa Bick - Pat Schmatz = Boswell Book Company

This link is well worth clicking not just because the Boswell Book Company newsletter announces my launch of Mercy Lily next week, but because of the wide range of authors they're hosting before and after me. James Dashner! Tamora Pierce! Kenneth Oppel! Also because of the great write-up they've given my fellow Wisconsin authors and their books, Ilsa Bick's ASHES and Pat Schmatz's BLUEFISH. I have both - signed on my WI Author designated bookshelf - and can't wait to read them! Check out what Boswell has to say about both books!

Muskego's Lisa Albert with a Touching Story for Adults and Teens, Coming This Wednesday, November 2, 7 pm.

Lisa AlbertOn Wednesday, November 2, Lisa Albert will speak at Boswell about her novel, Mercy Lily. Teenage Lily and her mother live in Oregon, where the Death with Dignity Act allows a patient to make the decision to end his or her own life. After traditional treatment for her rapidly advancing Multiple Sclerosis fails, Mom takes bee sting therapy, administered by Lily, to alleviate her pain. Mercy LilyLily is trained as a veterinary assistant, so she can easily handle snatching honeybees with tweezers, stinging Mom, and watching the venom empty into her flesh. What Lily can't handle is what happens when the bee sting therapy fails and it becomes clear that Mom wants to die.

Here's what The Voice of Youth Advocates has written about Mercy Lily: "The conflicting emotions of Lily, the lead character, are described in such a way that any reader can easily sympathize with her inner turmoil, making this story a page-turner, because nothing, including the virtuous and the shameful, is held back." Join us to celebrate the publication of Albert's first novel.

7. Thankful Thursday - Debut Edition With Photos!

Wow, so thankful!!

MERCY LILY went on sale on October 8th and to my delight,
it's been spotted at Barnes and Noble stores across the country! It's available through Indiebound.com and Amazon.com as well. I went out to celebrate with my husband, some siblings and in-laws. On the way there, my husband spotted this car in the parking lot and I had to snap a pic!

My siblings gave me a beautiful Cross pen with Mercy Lily 2011 engraved on it, a massage gift card, and the teeniest champagne bottle you've ever seen (it's a decoration). So sweet!!

So, so thankful for my family! Without them, I'd be nothing. Zilch. Nada.  My husband, Joe, has turned into a one man promo machine and has been hand-selling like crazy. What a guy! He's been bringing home copies for me to sign to people and then returning them to their new owners.

My son, Joe, posted a heartwarming shout-out on his Facebook to me on the day of the debut: Congratulations to my wonderful and beautiful mother, Lisa Rondinelli Albert on the release of her first novel, "Mercy Lily"! Your love and passion for writing has been nothing short of a blessing and inspiration to me, love you Mom!  What a guy, huh?! I responded by saying I started this whole writing thing as a way to be a stay-at-home Mom to my beautiful kids, and now here it is so many years later and my book is coming out and he's living on his own, writing his own stuff! (he's a hip hop artist and lyricist).

My daughter, Alex (another talented writer!), keeps me grounded and that's been a big help in the "keeping balance" department. It's so easy to get wrapped up in spending all my "free" time doing authorly things but there comes a time when I need to clock out, watch Funniest Home Videos or go antiquing and just chill. We also seem to hit the bookstore together a lot. Go figure! :-)
Voice Of Youth Advocates (VOYA) had two great reviews:

"Mercy Lily is a quick and enjoyable read, if a bit simple for the complex subject matter on which the novel is based. The conflicting emotions of Lily, the lead character, are described in such a way that any reader can easily sympathize with her inner turmoil, making this story a page-turner, especially because nothing, including both the virtuous and the shameful, is held back. Those who enjoy well written character development should take a look at Mercy Lily. 4Q, 3P. Reviewer: Teen Reviewer"

And a snippet from a long, thoughtful review that really got it: "Teen readers will find this novel both affecting and thought provoking as they identify with Lily's agony and examine their own beliefs."

Last weekend, I attended t

12. 2011 SCBWI LA Conference; Critiques, Rights, and Rock Stars!

What a conference! My awesome roomies, Shawn McGuire and Tammi Sauer, were so much fun! Thanks, ladies!!

I hadn’t been to LA for the conference since 2007 so it felt great to return. I was awarded a full International Conference Scholarship back in 2003 (they weren’t officially announced back then) and retruned several years in a row.

Once I arrived at the Hyatt on Thursday, I slid right back into Writer’s Camp mode, because being surrounded with 1,000 other publishing industry people makes me feel right at home. Ahhhh!

Shawn and I were exhausted from only getting 2 to 3 hours sleep, so we hit the pool and lounged. Thursday night was dinner in Beverly Hills with a group of amazing and fun authors.

After Friday’s opening talks and keynotes, I went to my critique. The editor who was given my middle grade novel was amazing. She gave me two pages of comments and said my character is super-likeable, the family dynamics are realistic and terrific, and compared it to 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass – a great thing!! I came away feeling very inspired and grateful.

I attended the afternoon workshop Know Your Rights: Making the Most of Your Subsidiary Rights with Tracey and Josh Adams . This was very interesting and informative and I came away with deeper knowledge and a better understanding of this part of the business. I wasn’t exactly sure what World English Rights or North American Rights meant going into the workshop and their explanation cleared up a lot for me. Basically, World English Rights covers anything printed in English, regardless of the territory. Foreign Rights for printing in another language, such as German or Italian, goes beyond that and is Translation Rights. I was lumping World English and Translation Rights all together so now I understand the why and how they are separate. Flux holds World English Rights to my novel, Mercy Lily, and I’ve heard they do a great job exploiting those rights. I’ll cross my fingers and whisper my motto, high hopes – little expectations. J

Friday night I participated in the PAL Member Cocktail Party and Book sale and had a great time. It was my first official event with Mercy Lily and even though I didn’t have copies to sell, I gave away bookmarks and chatted with a lot of people who came to my table. Super fun!! After that, the Wisconsin SCBWI members got together and had pizza and drinks and then we went to the X Bar. Lots of fun and shenanigans!!

Saturday was whirlwind of keynotes and workshops and it was go-go-go until the big 40 Winks Poolside Gala. The day was packed with informative and inspiring talks! The evening was gobs of fun. I danced until my feet hurt and got up on stage and sang a bit of “Brick House.” Believe me when I tell you I was sober but intoxicated from the energy of 1,000 attendees.

I had a chance to catch up with writer pals on Sunday before the Golden Kite luncheon and then was treated to the amazing line-up of speeches by the winners and the always charming and inspiring Richard Peck. I adore him!

Ellen Hopkins was at my table and even though it’s hard to talk across a table for twelve, it was great to spend a little time with her and my writer friends. After the meal, a few seats opened up and Sonya Sones and Judy Blume sat with us! I’m a huge fan of both and have had the pleasure of meeting Sonya before (she’s super nice and even sent me photos she’d taken of me – some of which I use online.) Going over to say “Hi” to Sonya, I said a quick hello to Judy Blume a

13. Early Buzz for Mercy Lily! And blurb news, too!

Kristi, The Story Siren, is a well known and well respected blogger of teen literature and she's giving MERCY LILY a nice shout out on her blog! Check it out HERE.

Kristi showcases five Fall 2011 titles and I am honored to have MERCY LILY be one of them! Wow!!

It's been a little sercet up until now, but now that ArCs are floating around I'm happy to report that Kristi read MERCY LILY and provided a lovely blurb for the cover. She reads zillions of novels and I am very thankful and lucky she made time for my book! Thanks, Kristi!

18. WIP's, Book Sales, Inspiration

I have been quite the slacker when it comes to blogging these days and I’m going to try to do better! Life gets so busy and right now, taxes are on the top of my to-do list. Ugh.

I fine-tuned an author visit program and visited with a group of eight graders earlier this month and it was a blast!! I think doing author visits and presentations at author events is one of my favorite parts of being an author.

I’m working on my middle grade novel and have noted my daily goals on my calendar and have set a deadline for myself. Then, I’ll be passing it on to a few writer friends for critique before sending it off to Super Agent.

I have several writer friends and one who really inspires me is my pal, Lisa Schroeder. Lisa and I swap manuscripts from time to time and I read her middle grade novel, IMPOSSIBLY SMALL when she completed it. I loved it and offered a few ideas, one being a fun twist to the ending. Lisa loved the idea and used it and I can’t wait to read the final version because she just SOLD it to Holt. Yay!! Congrats, Lisa!!

I’m also doing research for a couple of nonfiction projects. One of the perks of working at my school library job is that I’m able to see gaps in the market. Not just the school library market, but the market as a whole. It just so happens that one of my projects will fill a gap and this is a really good thing! I won’t go into platform and competing books here, but I am working behind the scenes on all that market research, too. There’re several databases I use and my findings are keeping me going.

So, I’m still here, working and writing. Tell me what you’re up to!!

XO Lisa

Welcome to the POSSUMS ARE AWESOME blog tour for the middle-grade book, POSSUM SUMMER, coming out in March! (Have you preordered yet?)

Hey everybody! Lisa was kind enough to host me on her blog for the little blog tour we've been having for POSSUM SUMMER! I thought I'd given P the slip but no, she's totally here, and ready to rumble! So without further ado,

a little about the book:

a lonely kid.

an orphaned baby possum.

a dad that says no way.

how do you keep that kind of secret?

and what happens when you’re found out?

Here we go!

LA: What's your drafting process like? Seat of your pants? Outlining?

JKB: Well, usually it's pretty seat of my pants. I start out with the character, their animal, and what the main problem is. Then usually things just crop up. I've tried to synop before and I always find myself going back and adding things after. I just can't do that whole outlining garbage! Ha!

LA: What book character are you most like and why?

JKB: This is a hard one. Deep down, I think I'm more like Jay Berry from SUMMER OF THE MONKEYS, or Lawrence in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, than I'd like to admit. I live in town, and work in town, but I'd still like nothing more than to live somewhere wild and free and have a horse. I don't think that's ever changed.

LA: What is your favorite scene from a book?

JKB: HM. This is HARD. I think I'll give a couple, so you can then psychoanalyse me all you want ... :-D ... Jay Berry and his sister Daisy running at the end of SUMMER OF THE MONKEYS, Alex's first ride on the Black in THE BLACK STALLION, Rascal examining the soda bottle in RASCAL, Lawrence dancing on the sands in his new Arab gear in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA ... these are some of my faves.

Princess: A boy? Dancing? Not where I come from!

JKB: It's a classic, you rat.

P: Classic doo-doo! Ha! Miss Lisa, how are y

From the CCBC site:
The CCBC-Net Community includes librarians, teachers, university educators and students, authors, artists, editors, publishers, and other adults with an interest in literature for the young.

Here's a link to join the listserv and read posts or join the discussion.
