12. "Feeding Frenzy"

I did this illustration for a magazine article about feeding time at the zoo and all of the different meals the staff had to prepare. I decided to put the animals in a fancy restaurant setting. The piece mentioned a naked mole rat, and I didn't want to miss my chance to paint one! Done in ink and watercolor.

13. I.F. "Sink"

The gator can just sink below the water and disappear, so watch out ...

15. Start to Finish - "Astroboy"

This series shows the stages of a recent illustration. The steps (in order): the sketch, the final graphite drawing, colors blocked in with Photoshop, the near-complete piece with the drawing Layer turned off, and the final illustration (completed in Corel Painter).

17. Bicycle Study

Here's a recent study that I did in Painter. The drawing is a scanned pencil sketch, and all of the color is done in Painter. For the subject, I got the idea from my sister-in-law (who is not a little kid anymore, by the way): she opens up her backpack and tells her dachshund that it's time to go for a ride. He'll jump into the bag, she puts it on, and off they go on their journey!

18. The Coyote and the Rabbit

I did this illustration for a reading book that came out this year. As you can probably guess, the "wascally wabbits" out-foxed the arrogant coyote.

19. Invention - David Opie

This is a piece that I just finished. It's from a book idea that I'm developing, and it just happens to be about an invention that goes haywire! I'm rethinking that yellow sky--it's starting to look a little "nuclear" to me. Your thoughts?
Medium: mostly gouache, with some pastel and colored pencil
