1. Animal Wednesday: One and a half dogs

I'm just leaving a quick note to tell everyone that I'll be busy this next week with the latest (and hopefully final) move for a long time.
I'm looking forward to setting up house and studio in the new place and to hopefully creating new work soon.
My journal and ATC commitments will be met as soon as I can clear the deck. After all, you don't want me to create crappy doo-doo, do you? So I'm giving myself permission to take some of the pressure off and get my life settled.
Give me a week or two (tops!) to be back in the saddle.
Thanks for all the snail mail, emails and love you've been sending my way.
See you soon!!
xoxo

4. Fast Forward

Technically, our Spring 2008 titles will not be released until March 1st, and yet, I'm asking you all to fast forward a little bit to talk about fall. Yes, that's right. I will now share the September 1st, Fall 2008, forthcoming books from Kane/Miller.

Included among the twelve books are two Toddler Tales that are being translated into Spanish (Los hermanintas son... - Little Sisters Are...- and Los hermanitos son... - Little Brothers Are...), Book #8 in the Jack Russsell Series - The Kitnapped Creature, four picture books (The Big Little Book of Happy Sadness, The Story of Growl, Something for School, There's No Such Thing as Ghosts), a modern-day fairy tale (Singing to the Sun), and four early readers (The Wicket Chronicles #1 and #2: Ely Plot and Fen Gold, Snake and LIzard, and Wombat & Fox.

Authors for this forthcoming season are Jucy Horacek, Vivian French, Colin Thompson, Terry Denton, Joy Cowley, Hyun Young Lee, Joan Lennon, Sally & Darrel Odgers, Emanuelle Eekhout, and Beth Norling. Gavin Bishop and Jackie Morris join us as new illustrators we're publishing and countries represented include our first book from New Zealand, along with Australia, England, South Korea, and Belgium.

More details to come...

5. Book clubs

You may have noticed I have a poll on the sidebar asking if you've ever been if a book club. Why?

I've always wanted to be in a book club. I love talking about books. I'm currently in library school and it's fabulous to discuss children's books with so many intelligent, literary people. I'd love to do it more regularly (and without having to write papers).

But, I've never been able to find a book club that reads books I'm interested in. 99% of them seem to discuss adult books. And, sure, there are lots of wonderful adult books, but currently for work, school and pleasure, and as a parent; my interest is in children's literature. (See my confession about no longer reading books for adults).

What to do? After years of searching, I've finally decided to start my own book club. If you're in the D.C. area (including Maryland, Virgina and Washington D.C.) and you're interested in children's literature, I'd love to have you join. There's a different genre every month (young adult, mystery, picture books, etc.) and the meetings are designed so that you can come to as few or as many as you like. So, if we're discussing a book you want to read, and the time works for you, you can come to just that meeting.

Do you have any book or genre suggestions? Practical advice? Do you live in the DC area and you'd like to join? Leave a note in the comments or e-mail me at wizardwireless [at] gmail [dot] com.

6. Faith in Literature

This year I joined a "grown up" book group. The theme has been Faith in Literature and the list has been interesting and challenging. We read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Kite Runner, Pope Joan, (all of those had YA elements so they have been my favorites) Wise Blood, The Memory Keeper's Daughter and others.

We will be taking the summer off but some of the folks have expressed an interest in some reading over the summer months. It occured to me that it might be interesting to have a list of YA or children's titles that could be discussed in this context, the role of a faith, no faith, looking for a Sign, faith-who-needs it-bah-humbug, faith in God, faith in self, in society, searching for meaning ... We are not limited to any denomination or religion.

The Giver
and Harry Potter were YA/Children's titles that I referenced in the course of our discussions this year.

Can you help me think of some other titles that I could share that might make for some thought provoking discussions?
