Goosebumps Movie Monster vs. Monster
Have you seen the Goosebumps movie (rated PG) which just opened in theaters? It’s filled with some of the coolest and creepiest monsters out there! I wouldn’t want them to come after me. But . . . what if they went after each other? Who would win if they went head-to-head against each other?

Goosebumps Movie Comes to Theaters October 16!
I love the Goosebumps series so much because it’s just the right amount of scary and surprising! So it was a dream-come-true when I was invited to an early screening of the Goosebumps movie (rated PG).
Let me tell you, the movie does not disappoint! It is so cool to see all the monsters from R. L. Stine’s stories come together in one action-packed movie. Jack Black does a wonderful job playing R. L. Stine, and the whole cast really brings the Goosebumps series to life on the big screen! The movie features all my favorite Goosebumps monsters and shows Stine’s huge imagination and creativity to the fullest. I was hanging on the edge of my seat and wishing it would never end!

At one point in the movie, the R. L. Stine character says, “A good story has three parts: the beginning, the middle, and the twist!” I think that quote sums up the movie for me because it includes all of my favorite classic Goosebumps moments while also ending with a shocking twist! Sorry, no spoilers! You have to wait until October 16 when the movie comes to theaters.

With Halloween nigh, it’s only fitting to serve up a treat . . . a Q & A with the terrifyingly spooktacular R. L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series! Read to find out which Goosebumps character R. L. Stine is most like, his inspiration for Slappy, and more!
Q: How did you come up with Slappy’s character and the rhyme that brings him to life?
R.L Stine: I’ve always been fascinated by puppets and dummies. When I was really young, maybe about three, my mother read the original Pinocchio to me, and it scared me to death. I think that’s where the idea of Slappy came from. When I write him, I want him to be so rude, he’s funny.
Q: Why did you decide on Goosebumps as the title of your book series?
R.L Stine: I liked the title Goosebumps because it is funny and scary at the same time, exactly what I try to do in the books. I’ve never been able to think of another title as perfect as that one.
Q: What would you do if you found yourself inside one of your books? Would you try to change the story or would you let it unfold?
R.L Stine: I think I would scream my head off—and run—like most of my characters. I would hate to be trapped in one of my books!
Q: Does anyone still call you “Jovial Bob?”
R.L Stine: No. Now I’m just scary. I haven’t been Jovial in years.
Q: Are any of your stories based on things that gave you nightmares as a kid?
R.L Stine: I was scared of a lot of things when I was a kid. I think that’s why I stayed in my room typing stories all the time. When I write my books now, I don’t remember specific things I was afraid of then. But I remember those feelings of fear and panic and try to bring them to my books.
Q: Do you go on book tours to other countries like Europe or Asia so that fans outside of the U.S. can meet you?
R.L Stine: I’ve been lucky to have done several wonderful book tours in other countries. I’ve done appearances and signings in London, Paris, and cities in Italy. My most memorable book tours were the ones in Australia and, most recently, China. I hope to travel to more countries soon.
Q: If you had to choose any character in any Goosebumps book to get its comeuppance from any Goosebumps monster, which character and which monster would you choose?
R.L Stine: Believe me, I don’t want to be a character in any of my books, and I don’t want to be a monster. I think I would least like to be the monster at Camp Jellyjam who was so smelly he died from his own smell!
Q: Which character from your Goosebumps books would you say is most like you and why?
R.L Stine: I guess I’m like the kid in The Blob that Ate Everything. He likes to sit at an old typewriter and write stories. And then he’s horrified when everything he writes comes true. I’d be horrified, too!
Q: What inspired you to write horror books?
R.L Stine: I’ve always enjoyed horror. When I was a kid, I read wonderful horror comics, like Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Horror. My brother and I used to go to a horror movie every Saturday afternoon. I think I enjoy writing horror for kids because it’s a chance to give them a chill—and a laugh—at the same time.
Q: Have you ever considered taking a fan’s idea and writing a Goosebumps story about it?
R.L Stine: I’ve never used a reader’s ideas. I enjoy thinking them up too much myself!

I was glad to hear from my editor at Macmillan, who passed along a quick review blurb of Scary Tales: Nightmareland from School Library Journal.
I was concerned that because this is part of a series, only the first book would get any kind of critical attention. You know, read one, read them all. Each story is different and independent. New setting, new characters, new twists and turns. So I am very grateful to the editors at School Library Journal for taking another look at the series. Thanks, folks.
Did you read that Jack Black is playing R.L. Stine — the real guy — in the upcoming “Goosebumps” movie? That’s just too fabulous for words. Last year in Austin I got to hang out with Bob Stine in his hotel room. We hung out on the deck, shooting the breeze, then headed over the to Texas Cemetery for a late-night reading in the dark, surrounded by tombstones. It was a pretty perfect night for me, a memory to keep, and I’m glad to see R.L. Stine mentioned in this review, which is from the August edition of SLJ.

Way back when I was younger, there was a TV show based on the Goosebumps series. I remember the first episode I ever saw—“Stay Out of the Basement”—and I remember being totally scared! But I loved it, too. I’ve since seen nearly every episode, and they’re all great.
I was really sad when the show ended. So that’s why I was very, very excited when I found out that my favorite spooky series
is being turned into a movie!And you’ll never guess who the star is . . .

, whose scary characters are actually real. He protects his readers by keeping the monsters locked up in books. But when his daughter, Hannah, befriends the son of the family that moves in next door, trouble is afoot! The new neighbor, Zach, accidentally releases the monsters from Stine’s books, so it’s up to the three of them to catch the escaped monsters before it’s too late.I’m sad because the movie won’t be coming out until March of 2016 (!!!) and that’s a very long time to wait. But I am so, so, SO excited that it’s being made! And two years is more than enough time to re-read all 177 Goosebumps books

For a minute there, I wasn’t sure.
I didn’t know.
I was not exactly confident that we would make it out alive.
The hordes kept shuffling toward us out of the darkness, closer and closer they crept . . .

Well, okay.
Let’s backtrack a minute.
I was in Austin, Texas, on a Saturday night, scheduled for a reading in the Texas State Cemetery with R.L. Stine. A creepy literature crawl in a graveyard. What mad genius, I wondered, devises such things?
I met Bob in his 15th-floor hotel room — yes, he lets me call him “Bob,” a name that no one under the age of seven actually bears anymore, they’re all named “Brendan” and “Colby” and “Luke.” We sat and chatted for half an hour or so, the old days at Scholastic, our experiences with school visits, this and that and whatnot. Time passed amiably. At seven, we were driven to the cemetery where we were to meet, we had been led to believe, a representative from the Texas Book Festival.
She never showed up. Oh well. The crowd sure did.
Austin is not just good beer and great music. It’s also a town that loves books.
Forty-five minutes ahead of schedule, hundreds of R.L. Stine fans had already gathered amidst a sea of tombstones. It was an incredible vision. Many sat under the high flood lights, but others sat on the edges, and waited patiently in the graveyard’s deeper, darker, gloomier pastures.
My task was to serve as the opening act, like a lone slice of cucumber on a plate. Bob was the hearty main course and the reason they came, so ravenous. By 8:00, it was time to get the show started. I spoke, elicited a laugh or two, told them that the scariest thing I ever encountered was kids who didn’t like books (because they grew up and voted, and sometimes even got elected to Congress). I read the “Bloody Mary” section from Home Sweet Horror, the creepiest part of the first book in my SCARY TALES series. I had the sense to keep it brief, with no intention of messing with Texas. Next I had the pleasure, the honor, to introduce the beloved author, R.L. Stine.
Beloved? Revered? Idolized? Worshiped? Words fail me. What I witnessed was that deep connection between reader and book. I saw what it was all about. The power of the word.
The crowd, I mean to say, went a little bananas.
They love him, you see. On a deep and profound level, the books of R.L. Stine had impacted these people — and they were there to see the man, to shake his hand, to thank him, to tell him what those stories meant to their lives.
The first books they ever really, really loved.
Goosebumps. Fear Street. The most trusted name in book-learnin’: R.L. Stine.
After the reading, it was time for us to sign. They don’t really do lines in Texas, unless, I guess, it’s for dancing. Somebody should have brought a fiddle. Fortunately a couple of good-natured cops came by restore order (at the end, after thank you’s, they even asked us both to sign a few books for ‘em, which we gratefully did).
Of course, R.L. was the star attraction. I mostly sat nearby, making sure Bob had water, a Sharpie, a small flashlight to see, and, sure, I even signed a few books of my own, basking in that borrowed light. I took a few lousy snapshots, which you see here.
The entire night was a revelation and a confirmation. The power of story. The impact of books. And how lucky I was to do this job, to be in this place, to share in these moments.
Near 10:00, the last of the line had finally wound down. Time to go.
We headed to the car through the big iron gate, which swung shut behind us with a clang.
Bob smiled. “It was a good night,” he said.
“Yes,” I agreed. “It was.”
And I thanked R.L. Stine — Bob, my friend — for the gift of letting me share a small part of it. And to see again what it can mean to write a book, and for that book to be read, and for it to be loved by someone, by anyone, somewhere, anywhere.
It’s a beautiful thing. Even in a graveyard. Even at night. Especially with R.L. Stine.

He's the evil puppet everyone loves to hate! Slappy has been scaring readers since the release of Goosebumps: Night of the Living Dummy in 1993. With his painted-on grin and beat up bow-tie, Slappy looks like an ordinary ventriloquist dummy. But looks can be very deceiving. This troublemaking block of wood is anything but dumb! He's a walking, talking, trash-talking terror!

R.L. Stine Halloween Web Chat!
Goosebumps fans, I have good news, bad news, and more good news.
First the good news. It's almost Halloween! To celebrate, Goosebumps author R.L. Stine will be hosting a Scholastic web chat on October 31 from 1-3 PM EST.
Now the bad news. You will probably be in school at that time, and it's on Facebook and Twitter which do not allow kids under 13.
But there's more good news! You can still participate! If you leave a Comment with your questions for R.L. Stine, I will send him your questions. He won't be able to answer them all, but you never know - he may pick YOUR question to answer during the chat. I'll post the answers and a recap of the chat right here on Ink Splot 26.

Goosebumps Most Wanted New Series
Think you're ready for Goosebumps Most Wanted, the most recent series from fright-master R.L. Stine? Well, you'd better be because the paranormal hooligans in these books are on the loose and out to get you! The creepiest, most disgusting, evil favorites from Goosebumps are all here. And they're up to no good. Nothing is safe!
The series kicks off this month with Goosebumps Most Wanted #1: Planet of the Lawn Gnomes. Lawn gnomes seem pretty harmless, right? Wrong. Jay Gardner used to think there wasn't anything particularly special about lawn gnomes, either. A little weird, maybe, but that was the worst of it. But when his family moves to a new neighborhood, he starts noticing that this town has something odd about it. Why does everyone have those funky-hatted figurines in their yards? And why is everyone so afraid to go out at night? Jay quickly learns that there are things out there a lot scarier than getting yelled at by his parents.
The most wanted list continues in later books with more of the most vile miscreants, including an unwanted visit from the world's worst ventriloquist dummy in Goosebumps Most Wanted #2: Son of Slappy. Catch all of Goosebumps Most Wanted—undead or alive.

You know you’re obsessed with Goosebumps when. . .
You don't even have to open a Goosebumps book to know that it’s going to be scary. The cover of You Can’t Scare Me creeps me out so much I don't want to read it! You can expect a twist and turn on every page of a Goosebumps book, but if you are a real Goosebumps fan, there are certain tell-tale signs that you share with other people who live and breathe the horror-filled world of Goosebumps.

Today at Scholastic is the third annual Shriek Week Goosebumps Event! For the past three years on the Friday before Halloween, Scholastic hosts the event to get everyone frightfully prepared for the Halloween weekend. This year's event will feature a Garlic Crusher Faceoff on Wii, which will put our vampire vanquishing skills to the test. Hey, you never know when a vampire will come for you so it's best to be prepared, right? The winner of the competition will win a Wii, the Goosebumps video game and a glow in the dark accessory pack!
The Cauldron of Spooks and Prizes will provide one of those Goosebumps suspenseful, fear-of-the-unknown moments. You are either going to get spooked or win something fun. To play, you have to stick your hand inside a cauldron that is gurgling and misting. It looks a little creepy but I will have to brave it and pick my item from the cauldron. I hope I don't get something gross!

The Get Goosebumps Mall Tour has been traveling around the country all month helping fans of all ages Get Goosebumps!
The most popular activity on the Tour has been the customized prank video that fans can make to send to all their friends and family. If you were at the mall at one of these events, you surely couldn't miss it. The activity was housed in a giant inflatable that you could enter and get a snapshot of your scariest, most frightful face. Your custom photo would then be added into the video, which you could retrieve online after the event using a unique code.
Fans also got to test their "batting" skills in the Batting Cage game from the Goosebumps HorrorLand Wii game. In this Batting Cage, the bats are the kind that fly! So players had a blast trying to avoid being eaten by bats by swinging away at them. Could you imagine if Batting Cage were a real attraction at an amusement park? That would be terrifying!
The Goosebumps video game is inspired by the One Day at HorrorLand book. As you readers may know, the workers that staff HorrorLand are called Horrors, the green-skinned monsters with curled horns. The tour also gave fans the opportunity to become a Horror in HorrorLand with a photo backdrop where they could place their face in place of the Horror's face. Fans got their pictures taken and received custom keepsake frames. We also saw a lot of fans having fun and taking their own pictures too with their cell phone cameras. Hey, c'mon – it's not every day that you could be a menacing green Horror!

You may have noticed a new game on THE STACKS called the Get Goosebumps Tombstone Challenge, and you may be wondering why a "Tombstone Challenge?" Well, you know how in the book Goosebumps HorrorLand: Revenge of the Living Dummy when Mr. Molloy tells the legend of the Mind Stealer doll and it sends chills down Britney's spine? Then when Britney takes a closer look at the doll, she hears it say something leaving her terrified only to find out on the next page that it was Ethan playing a prank to scare her? Just like in the Goosebumps books, we wanted to create a prank game that Goosebumps fans can use to give their friends Goosebumps anytime they want. And who better to pull the prank than the ultimate Goosebumps prankster himself, Slappy the Living Dummy!
The Get Goosebumps Tombstone Challenge is seemingly a simple game that leads players down one path only to send them down another. The game challenges players to see how many tombstones they can click, but at the moment they least expect it, Slappy surprises them! Dare a friend to take the Goosebumps Challenge, but keep mum about the Slappy surprise!
