For this week's Poetry Friday offering, I have a poem of Matthew Arnold's:
Dover Beach
The sea is calm to-night.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits; on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand;
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night-air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.
Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the A gaean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear

Ah, love, let us be true

I find this poem incredibly evocative of the sea at night and can easily see in my mind's eye the scene that Arnold describes.

In personal news, my mum's surgery went off OK yesterday and she's now back home with my dad and brother.

What a wonderful story of your adopted daughter, friendship, and the unexpected pleasure of a "special scent." Dogs do have a way of making their presence known and putting their own stamp on any vacation.
Thanks for the smile of recognition--we, too, have known that "special scent" and it's a memory maker alright!

A very touching story, Mary. I always admire people who adopt, and I wouldn't expect anything less from a caring and compassionate person like you. I adopted an "older" dog from a shelter in Colorado once and was warned repeatedly about the responsibilities the come with "older" animals. She lived another 15 years and wasn't sick a day of it! Lovely little story, Mary.

Oh..what a precious story..
All of my pets are rescues. We have two cats: Sylvester, a tuxedo, and Jadzea, a tortie. We just recently adopted our first dog, Jack, a Doxie/chihuahua mix. They bring such joy into our lives.
