Oh Eric- whew... it's crazy what your body can do in reaction to stress. I had a period of time a couple of years ago when I was having panic attacks and thought I was going to croak...exercise, sleep...I know that's almost impossible right now with a baby in the house, but in about 3 years, you should start getting regular nights of sleep (after potty training is underway!)...I had an atavan prescription for awhile that helped me to mellow out- also taking yoga- released some of the tension in my neck from hours of drawing....Anyhow- it all gets better when you start making some changes to help yourself get a bit of time to breathe...I'll be thinking about you all-

ok, first, the drawing is really nice! surprising how your brain works under stress.
second, glad to hear that you are fine!
and third, here a success story regarding sleeping schedule of a baby ( people tend to tell you only the bad ones!). Amélie slept from 11pm to 6am after 3 month. so there is hope for you!

Love atavan for long flights.Hate taking drugs though, I think it's a slight phobia. Especially mind altering ones, even mild ones like atavan. I do walk the dog every day and where I don't drive I walk a lot in any case.

I'm actually finding that a real problem. I'm not a napper and can't seem to drift off when I have the chance. I have slowed down a bit though and cut down on coffee and cut out alcohol for the time being.

Thanks Alicia! I was really happy with this drawing and it made me realize how bored I am with trying to draw realistically.

Thanks Annette! Isn't it funny, the stuff the brain does? I really was convinced I was very sick but as time went on I realized that I wasn't having any other symptoms and was just tired.

On a funny note, the nurse had just bought my book last week!

When the little one naps the two of you should rest. I remember when my son was born. My husband worked nights. My daughter got up early morning and my son slept maybe an hour or two at a time. I thought I had to have supper ready at 11:30, clean the house, do the errands, do do do. Well you get the picture. A month after my son was born, I ended up in the hospital with a migraine headache that kept me there for 4 days through the worst part of it. It really lasted over a week. Take care of yourselves. The picture is cool though!

I really can see the humour in it now.And it actually sent me off on a really creative tangent. gosh, i don't think I'd ever remember that name!

Too bad you're not a napper, Eric, but as my midwife advised me right after K's birth, even if you can't nap, lying down and just reading will help you. And it will get easier! I'm still napping every day (2x today, in fact -- little bastard kept having short naps!) but he's now only waking around twice a night. Anyway, can you slow down on your work? Listen to what your body is telling you.

Sheesh I remember the cumulative effect of no sleep when the kids were little. It took me about a year before I felt like I could form a full sentence.

So hang in there, and be kind to yourself! :-)

i've been there eric. i remember in the first year, everyone kept saying it gets better, and i wanted to punch them, because i figured they couldn't understand where i was at, physically and mentally exhausted.. functioning well was not anything i was able to do for the first year. but, i survived, and it DID get better.

i had a previously scheduled two person show i was one half of to paint for when shelby was 2 months old. it was brutal. friends would call i would talk gibberish, i couldn't even hold a conversation. but it DID get better, every 3 months she would sleep a little longer, be a little less fussy. while she was an absolute joy from day one, caring for a newborn was definitely the hardest thing i have ever done...but it DID get better! and it will for you too, they do eventually sleep longer at night.

Glad to hear you're okay! I remember those first two months, well! I couldn't believe how messed up my brain was...I couldn't even remember my husband's name the first week! It was all, "Hey...umm...baby-daddy, can you get me that?" hahaha!

Good Luck getting more rest, baby-daddy. ;P

(p.s.-and talking about scary, when I was five months pregnant, I almost blacked out in front of a class of 28 7th graders. Turns out I was overheated: Pregnant teacher+sweater+warm classroom=seeing stars! I think my students were more freaked out than I was afterwards. :P)

I've got no kids, so I don't think I can even imagine! I'm in awe of baby-parents. I lived with the mother of a girl who had a new baby for a few months, and every few days the pale young mum would visit, hand over the baby, mumble something and instantly fall fast asleep... and then she had another one the next year, as planned. Huh! Wow.
Anyway, hope you got some friendly babysitting person so you can get solid sleep now and then... and I'm glad it's more funny than scary now! :)

I had a similar experience with my daughter last summer, except that she was at camp and fell of an airtrack and landed on her elbow. She had a compund fracture of her humurous bone. We rushed to the ER where she had surgery (really stressful time!). She spent the rest of her summer in a cast at home. Hope your littel one feels better soon.
