1. Canongate "went to war" over Assange memoir – Michel

Julian Assange's literary agent and PFD m.d. Caroline Michel accused publisher Canongate of going "to war" with her client and "feeding the media myth" in releasing information to the Independent newspaper ahead of publication of Assange's controversial memoir.

The email, sent to Canongate founder Jamie Byng, has been revealed on the Wikileaks website after it published transcribed phone conversations and emails leading up to the publication of Julian Assange, The Unauthorised Autobiography last week.

2. Quercus sees sales drop but profits rise

Quercus saw an inevitable downturn in sales in the first half of 2011 after its Stieg Larsson enhanced 2010 numbers, but still managed to increase profit, improve its cash position, grow digital sales seven-fold and pay its first ever dividend to shareholders.

4. E-book buyers expect discounts, but do buy more

UK e-book buyers are expecting heavier discounting on digital titles than their counterparts across the Atlantic, a new survey has found.

The survey, undertaken in April by consultants Simon-Kucher and Partners among 250 book buyers from the US, UK and Germany, concluded an e-book without additional features should cost around 65% to 70% of the print price, though admitted there was "no simple formula" in hitting the pricing sweet spot.

5. July retail growth "modest", amid poor book market

July retail sales saw a modest improvement, according to figures from the British Retail consortium, though book sales fell to their lowest level for seven years with food continuing to outperform non-food items.

6. Sage buys Learning Matters

Academic and professional publisher Sage has bought Learning Matters, the independent education publisher founded in 1999.

The sale, for an undisclosed sum, was announced jointly by Learning Matters founder and managing director Jonathan Harris, and Ziyad Marar, global publishing director, at Sage. Harris will continue to work with the company as a consultant. A Sage spokesperson said Learning Matters will stay at its Exeter home until December 2011 with details of a future transition plan to be ironed out.

8. You are re-hired, Lord Sugar says to Pan Macmillan

Pan Macmillan has secured world rights to a second book from the computer entrepreneur Lord Alan Sugar, and has used his 840,000 Twitter followers to help choose the front cover.

Ingrid Connell acquired The Way I See It: Rants, Revelations, and Rules for Life direct from Lord Sugar having published the "Apprentice" star's autobiography successfully in September last year. The new title will be published on 29th September 2012 as a £20 hardback.

9. Anthony Cheetham out at Atlantic, already planning new venture

Anthony Cheetham has left Atlantic Books and resigned as a director of the company. It is understood that Cheetham left the publisher yesterday (30th June) with a memo circulated internally announcing his departure. His role has been under discussion for weeks, and rumours of the split have been circulating for some time.

10. E-growth good in Europe, despite increasing US threat

UK publishers are seeing good growth from e-book sales overseas, particularly in Scandinavia, but they face a looming threat from US e-book companies, which are now setting their sights on English readers in Europe. Though there were also opportunities for publishers selling into the US via digital routes.
