1. LTUE Followup

Okay, so maybe the photographer cut off half my face. It's still proof that I was there. This was one of my favorite panels, with a couple other great authors, a NYT bestselling author and a literary agent. Oh, and they proved that they cannot only write well, but speak well too. I don't think I've laughed so hard in a long time.

In addition to panels on topics from Young Adult literature to avoiding mistakes first-time authors make, I interviewed with several podcasts and shows, including Residual Hauntings, talking about "The Last Archangel".  You can listen here:

http://residualhauntings.podomatic.com/entry/2013-02-17T21_55_15-08_00

I even won a free shirt from Epic Puzzles and Games in Lehi, UT because I correctly answered a question about zombies. I surprised even myself when I came up with the name "revanant".

I've also taken up the cause of the Author's Think Tank and their awesome new podcast "by authors, for authors" called Forever Writers. I wrote the lyrics at the beginning of the podcast, and will hopefully be a host on future installments. They will be posted soon here:

http://www.foreverwriters.com/

If you didn't go this year, I would definitely check it out next year. Visit http://www.ltue.org for more information. It usually happens in February and is a wonderful value for your money. If you are an author and present, you can even get in for free.

I will appear next at Write Here in Ephraim on March 4th at Snow College in Utah, and then at the LDStorymaker's Conference in mid May. See you there!

3. My Best Writing Year Ever: How I Did It

600,000 words in 365 days. In December 2011, that was my goal. I honestly didn't know if I could do it. That was like writing words equal to NaNoWriMo (50,000) every month for an entire year. As of Dec 20th, 2012, I hit 609,548 words for the year.

I had to set some ground rules for myself. I said that only writing that I intended to try to publish in some form would count, and the prewriting that I did for any novels or short stories. Anything I did for work, emails, etc would not count.

I also thought that I needed to keep very good track so I could have exact word counts. My first step was to create an excel spreadsheet with 12 tabs, and label them for the months. I took a cell and set it up to display the total of the all numbers in the first column. Then, any time I wrote something, I put the word total in the next open cell in the first column. This kept an automatic running total with little hassle. I then set up a cell in each sheet that added up all of the total cells, so I could have a running total of everything I had done for the year.

This sheet helped keep me motivated. I could always tell how much progress I had made and how much I had yet to do.

I then evaluated my writing style. I know that I work best when I have a few projects going at a time, and so I mapped out the things I wanted to work on next and decided to work on each of these projects every day. I prioritized the projects to work on the ones I wanted to get done first early in the year.

Then, there really wasn't a big trick to it. I committed to writing every day and anytime I could. I tried to bring my laptop with me for times when I had a few minutes. If I didn't have my laptop, I wrote using my iPod. If I didn't have that, I kept a notebook handy to write, or prepare myself for writing so that I could move more quickly when I got to it.

The biggest thing is to know when your best productive times of the day are and really use them for all they are worth. During these times, minimize distractions. Turn off Facebook, check your email once before you got to the writing zone, or whatever you need to do. Pinterest will still be there when you get back. There are even programs such as Cold Turkey, which will allow you to block these sites for a certain time limit while you write. Pretty useful.

I experienced some major setbacks. I had some really busy weeks, such as the week before "The Secret Garden " opened, in which I was an actor. Two LDS General Conferences and countless other events for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Looming deadlines for work, a complete hard drive meltdown, severe sickness and many other things inhibited my ability to write. There were times when I fell way behind and had to rush forward by writing 10,000 words on the last two days of the month.

I'm here to tell you that persistence pays. Just like in running a marathon, it does not do you any good to spend all of your energy in one burst and then stop running. You must keep a steady pace, with occasional bursts of speed to catch up in order to do your best. I believe that goals help writers push themselves to accomplish more than they normally would. Here's a glimpse into what I wrote this year:

Novels
The Canticle Kingdom Book III
The Last Archangels, Books II and III
Wandaful
Elected (Partial)
The Death Seer (Partial)

Non-Fiction
The Ward Choir Survival Guide
The Ultimate Morning Study Companion (German/English)
Voices in My Blood (Partial, co-authored)
Personal History 2012

Short Stories
Many, including ones for two anthologies "Sing We Now of Christmas" and "Carol of the Tales".

Stage
When Death Comes (Musical)
Christmas Spirits the Musical (Partial)

Serial Stories
Canticle of Dawn
Canticle of Twilight
Age of Archangels Seasons I and II
Christmas Spirits

Articles
Dozens of articles for GospelIdeals.org

This next year is going to be taken up in revision and getting these and works from past years polished up and better ready to submit. If anyone else is up to the challenge, I highly recommend it. I accomplished so much this year and it is great now to look back and see that it all worked out. I am committed and serious about writing and will continue to put in the long hours that it takes to realize my potential.

What are your writing goals for the coming year?

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

4. The Cast List

Whenever a book comes out, I always play the game of deciding whom I would cast in each role if the book ever became a movie. I thought it would be fun to try this with "The Last Archangel", one character at a time. I'll post a new one every week with the main characters and you can see if you agree or disagree with my picks.

For this first pick, I'm going to start with the most prominent character, Xandir. He is a powerful angel who broke heavenly law and was sentences to serve as a destroying angel until the End of Time. He is a powerful and quick-witted character, often seen brandishing swords and engaging in high-speed chances.

My first pick, for the role of Xandir would be: Gerard Butler.

File:Gerard Butler (Berlin Film Festival 2011).jpgPhoto by Siebbi

Not only can this guy pull of intense roles, but he's got the muscles to be convincing as an angel who's job it is to destroy things. Just think of him as a Spartan...with wings. He doesn't have to sing for this role (think Phantom of the Opera) and overall, I think he'd knock it out of the park.

What do you think? If not, who do you think would do better?

Have a great weekend!

5. Angel Thursday: Interview with Eden

Happy March everyone! Two weeks until my birthday, and Spring is on the way. What could be better?

I'm happy to announce that I once again reached my word count goal last month. Though February had only 29 days, I still managed to write over 50,000 words, to bring me to over 100,000. I've got not intention of stopping now!

Here's a flashback interview today with one of the characters from "The Last Archangel". I'm currently writing the third installment and she figures pretty importantly there too.  Enjoy!

Interviewer:  Today we have Mrs. Eden Fortuna with us, witha segment you won’t want to miss.  Sherecently experienced a rather…traumatic episode in her marriage.  I’ll let her explain.

Eden: Traumaticis one word for it. I recently found out that my husband Daren is possessed bya demon.

Interviewer:That’s awful.  I’m sure many of ourreaders have suspected the same thing in moments of frustration.  Tell us, what were the warning signs?

Eden:  Well there are the more obvious signs.  My mild-mannered husband suddenly took aviolent turn. I prepared this really nice dinner and got all dressed up andinstead of a romantic evening, I ended up with bruises and a nearly shatteredwindshield.

Interviewer: I’msorry to hear that, but there are many reasons a man could turn violent.  What were some of the other signs that tippedyou off?

Eden: Now here’sa weird one: demons have an affinity for spicy food.  My husband hates spicy food, but then I foundout that he started going to lunch several times a week at this Indian curryhouse—Taste of Bombay.  For a guy thatcan’t stand a green pepper in a sauce, that was a serious change of character.

Interviewer: Whatdid you attribute all this to before you found the truth?

Eden: I thoughthe might be having an affair.  He wasspending much longer hours at the office, and seemed less interested inspending time with me.  He even startedtelling me that he couldn’t even discuss what he was doing at work.  Eventually, he even claimed that there wasanother woman, but something still didn’t add up.

Interviewer: Whatfinally tipped you off that something extra strange was going on?

Eden: The nightafter he stormed out, I found his cell phone that he had left behind and hisday planner.  On the day he stormed out,he had written, THE END, and when his cell phone rang and it startedsmoking.  Before I dropped it, I saw thenumber…with a 666 area code.  Then when Ipicked it up again, I thought it would be a lump of ashes, but it didn’t evenfeel hot after it stopped ringing.

Interview:Creepy!  Did the caller leave a message?

Eden: Yes, but Icouldn’t make out a word of it and neither could my friend, who is a professorof Linguistics.  That really awakened myinner conspiracy theorist.

6. Christmas Presents

Many great presents came early this year for me.  But first, I would look to announce one of my own:

Congratulations to Janelle, who is the winner of this month's Blog Hop.  She is the winner of a signed copy of "The Canticle Kingdom".Thanks for entering!

Now here are some writing presents I got this year.

1. A great review in the major Salt Lake City newspaper The Deseret News for "The Last Archangel".  You can read the entire review here: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705395271/Review:-/'The-Last-ArchAngel/'-full-of-warring-angels-and-demons.html

2. I've had a great response about my Christmas anthology.  I've decided that I'll take more than 12 stories, as I would like to include any that I feel are high enough quality. I'm still looking for a cover artist to donate his or her services, and for others who have a story to tell.  When submitting, please think of copyright guidelines if the song you want is not in the public domain.

3. I'm featured today with a short story on a blog that is based on my actual experiences two Christmas Eves ago. Please pop over there an enjoy: http://www.ingasilbergbooks.com/2011/12/write-holiday-short-story-flight-before.html?showComment=1323385646103#c4503781382542754926.

4. My serial series called "Canticle of Night" has been picked up by Big World Network and will be appearing a serial story on the internet in both digital and audio form starting soon.  It is a prequel story for "The Canticle Kingdom" and gives background on the brothers who created the music box in the first place.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you all have a blessed and safe holiday season.

7. National Novel Revision Month

Congratulations to all those who completed National Novel Writing Month! I finished early this year and that felt pretty good. I'm now on to what I call "National Novel Revision Month", in which I sand down the rough edges of my hastily-constructed novel.  I'm sure many of you are doing the same.  I've decided to call this sequel to the Last Archangel, "The Last Kingdom", which has to do with the prophecy in Daniel 2 of the Old Testament.  Go read it for a clue as to what I mean: http://lds.org/scriptures/ot/dan/2?lang=eng

As such, I want to announce the winners of my NaNoWriMo contest. Alas, no one who entered the contest beat me to the punch of winning NaNoWriMo, but I did select three lucky winners to receive first chapter evaluations of their NaNoWriMo manuscripts.  They are:

Heather Justesen
Diana Ault
Megan Conway

Thanks for entering! I think I'll make that an annual event, so start gearing up for next year.

Next of all, I'm very excited about how many people are preparing stories for my Christmas Carol anthology.  I would still love to see more entries.  If you are considering writing one, please let me know so that I can make sure we all write on different songs.  I have included a list of those songs already taken in my "Current Projects" page above.

All proceeds of this project will go to the National Down Syndrome Society, which is a great cause, so I hope you'll help me spread the word! If there is anyone who would like to volunteer their services in helping design a cover, edit/typeset, or anything else, please shoot me an email at [email protected].

Finally, look for a new blog hop starting tomorrow, and to all of you, I wish a blessed and peaceful holiday season.

Another good writing day with another 2,000 words down. I've doubled the length of The Last Archangel II in just 12 days. I'm well on my way to finishing up by the end of the month.

Please also consider entering my NaNoWriMo contest. I could use some more people on my leaderboard.  You can update your word count by either leaving a comment on one of my posts or by posting on my Facebook author page at http://www.facebook.com/authormichaelyoung. You can find the widget to offical enter the contest by clicking on any of my NaNoWriMo posts.

Leaderboard:
1. Writer Mike 31,387 (as of November 12th)
2. Robin: 25,022 (as of November 12th)
3. Misha: 3,398 (as of November 2nd)

Word Count:

31387 / 50000
(62.77%)

Writing Tip of the Day:
Even when not doing NaNoWriMo, one of the best ways to motivate yourself is to keep track of your progress. For this reason, I always have a word count meter like the one you see above. Not only does it give you a visual representation of your progress towards the finish line, but it even tells you what percentage you have completed. There are many options out there, but here is the one that I use. http://svenja.atspace.com/wordmeter.html. Check it out. It's very easy to use.

9. Blog Tour: Key of Kilenya and October Blog Hop

Hello readers! I've got a double header today. First I've got a feature about a new fantasy novel called "The Key of Kilenya". Then I've got a contest for my October Blog Hop, where you can win a signed copy of "The Last Archangel".  Please have a look at both parts of the post.

First a little about the plot:
When two vicious wolves chase fourteen-year-old Jacob Clark down a path from our world into another, his life is forever changed. He has no idea they have been sent by the Lorkon—evil, immortal beings who are jealous of powers he doesn’t know he possesses—powers they desire to control.

The inhabitants of the new world desperately need Jacob's help in recovering a magical key that was stolen by the Lorkon and is somehow linked to him. If he helps them, his life will be at risk. But if he chooses not to help them, both our world and theirs will be in danger. The Lorkon will stop at nothing to unleash the power of the key—and Jacob's special abilities.

My take:
Andrea is a debut author with a promising start. The book is highly imaginative, which is the greatest strength as a fantasy author. Her ability alone to come up with exotic-sounding names is impressive. The pacing is good and keeps the reader engaged, with plenty of surprising twists. The author did a good job of providing an interesting beginning to the story that did not drag down the pace.  Andrea has set the readers up well for additional books and, I'm sure based on the first installment that the following installments will only be even better.

10. Prelude to NaNoWriMo

It’s that time again! It’s a month that I look forward to every year, where I can jointhousands of others across the globe in rapidly racking up the word count onour newest novels. For the uninitiated, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMofor short) is a challenge to write 50,000 words (or the length of a shortnovel) between November 1st and midnight on November 30th.That translates to about 1,666 words every day, which is no small feat.

I have participated for the last two years, and both years I‘won’, which means that I was able to reach 50,000 words before thedeadline.  The first year, I wrote thefirst draft of a sequel to “The Canticle Kingdom” called “The Frozen Globe”,which should still be on the horizon. For my second year, I wrote most of the anovel called “Starspire” which I finished in another 20 days to round it out atabout 80,000.  It’s my personal record at50 days from zero to novel.

This year, I’m going to do the reverse of last year.  By the end of October, I should have about30,000 words towards the as yet unnamed sequel to “The Last Archangel”. DuringNaNoWriMo, I will write the rest of the 50,000 words to finish the first draftof the novel by the end of November.  I’mvery excited about it.

You may ask if with such speed you see a drop inquality.  The great thing about NaNoWriMois that you are allowed and even encouraged to do extensive planningbeforehand.  Some authors are pure “discoverywriters” and just want to see where the story takes them.  Though I do this to a point, I find that withNaNoWriMo, it is “plan or perish”. If you are going to write that many words ina single month, you need to have an  ideawhere you are headed or you might find yourself 50,000 words richer, but in thewrong direction.

So, hop on board! Visit http://www.nanowrimo.org tosign up and take part.  In the comments, let me know what you are planning to write.

12. Final Angel Trivia:

The last question was:  What is the name of the "Angell" that designed the Salt Lake City Temple as well as many other buildings in Salt Lake City?

The correct answer was given by Tanya Parker Mills: Truman, from the architect's full name of Truman O. Angell.

The final question is: In which Biblical book does it record a donkey seeing an angel and then temporarily getting the power of speech?

Hint: It is in one of the books that are considered "the books of Moses".

Join me later this week as I review too books and talk about what I learned as a writer by reading them.

The Answer: Revelation

No takers on this one.  Try the next one on for size:

Hint: His initals are T.O.A.

14. Angel Trivia Day 2

Congrats to Alyssa Clark, who got the correct answer to yesterday's question.  The question was:

About how many times is the word angel mentioned in the Bible?

She answered: "287 times though it varies with which version you use"

You take day 1!

Here is the question for day 2:

Name the three angels mentioned by name in the standard cannon of the Bible.

And here's a hint:

Two of three end in "el" and one does not.

16. Angel Music and 99 Followers!

I'm writing today from hot and humid Illinois. I've been here on vacation visiting family and having a great time.  I see that my blog has reached the 99 follower mark.  Thanks to all followers both old and new.  Let's see if we can tip the 100 mark soon.

When writing "The Last Archangel", I read a lot about angels and listened to many songs about them. One great thing about angels is that there are so many great songs about them.  Being the music buff that I am, I happen to own many of them. So, I wanted to play a little game on my blog.

I have made a playlist in which every track has something to do with angels. Make a list of 10 songs that have “angel” as part of the lyrics or that are about angels in some way.  After I have enough entries, I will post my list and you will get one point for each song you thought of that I did not.  The winner will be featured here on my blog with the prestigious “golden harp award”.

After this, I wanted to feature some angel trivia that we used at the my recent launch party.  My wife and I came up with these together and the guests thought it was really fun.

If you haven't already, head over to&nb

Latest Post: Enjoy a great review by Lisa Faber.  I got a kick out of the end of the post where she says that she realized that she already had “The Canticle Kingdom” sitting on her booshelf and she wants to read it right away after reading “The Last Archangel”.  I'm also on author Tristi Pinkston's blog today with a guest post about gaining creative inspiration through immersing yourself in good art. Also don’t forget to enter the blog tour giveaway.

24. Blog Tour Day 6: Interview with Eden and Writing Fresh Fantasy

Latest Post: Today I am “interviewing” one of the main characters in “The Last Archangel”, Eden Fortuna, about finding out that her husband was possessed. I’m also featured as a guest poster today at The Reading Fever blog, talking about writing fantasy that doesn’t feel clichéd. Also don’t forget to enter the blog tour giveaway.
