Disenchanted: An Interview with Sophie Goodchild
1. How old are you, Sophie?
I just turned sixteen and what a crazy ride it has been since my birthday. My magic was always less than expected and hard to control. My Aunt Janie thought my ordinary half was affecting my spellcasting witch half, but I recently learned that my diamond bloodcharm, a gemstone pendant from my mom, enhances my magic, and it has really made a difference in my spellcasting, but don’t tell anyone! I have a surprise in store for my coven.
2. Are your parents alive? Are they married? Are they divorced?
Sadly, my parents passed away when I was a small child. I have some memories of them, especially sitting on my mother’s lap and the warmth of her embrace. Their deaths haunt me because I have a feeling the mystery surrounding what happened has something to do with black-hearted Judge Mather. He is the father of the guy I’m falling hard for, but he is an unethical man who stops at nothing to get what he wants. He’s locked up half of my coven’s witches for magical slip-ups, and I fear he had something to do with my parents’ deaths.
3. If you were sent to a deserted island what three things would you take?
My godmother Phoebe’s sugared pansy petals because they are delicious and they melt in your mouth. I would bring my red diamond bloodcharm for sentimental and practical reasons. It belonged to my mother and it enhances my magic, which would come in handy on a deserted island. I would also include my hot boyfriend because he’s fearless when danger is near and that’s been a lot lately.
4. Do you have a hidden talent?
I can make a mean purple spaghetti sauce. It requires purple tomatoes and pink Parisian garlic along with a few special herbs from my Aunt Janie’s enchanted garden. I cast a simple puree spell on it to blend the ingredients together and it’sdelicious.
5. Do you consider yourself and introvert or extrovert?
I’m an introvert. I’m not sure if being an introvert is my true nature or from a habit of keeping secrets and trying to blend in. The ordinaries in Wethersfield, a small Connecticut town steeped in Puritanical history, just can’t handle witch magic, so it’s best for everyone involved if we keep our talents hidden and being an introvert helps.
6. What is your idea of a perfect day?
A perfect day would be a day full of swoony kissing with my forbidden boyfriend, Alexavier. He’s an ordinary and a Mather. In case you don’t know your American history, theMathers played a big role in condemning witches to hang in New England. Alexavier is a descendant of the man who condemned my ancestor, Rebecca Greensmithto hang at Gallows Hill so I get that he’s forbidden, but his bad boy ways and his hot British accent are so irresistible. Plus he’s hiding a secret that I just have to know. Did I mention he’s tall, dark-haired, and has lips that taste like sun-ripened peaches?
7. If I asked you to write an entry in your journal what would it be about?
A journal? I’ve been trying to unlock entries from my ancestor’s enchanted journal from three hundred and fifty years ago. So if I had a journal of my own, I might want to repay the favor and write something down that would help my descendant sometime in the future.
8. Tell me something no one else knows about you?
I love living in Wethersfield. It’s a small town, but I think in time, the people here will come to embrace the witches living among them. Fingers crossed!

After taking several writing courses in college and attending professional writing workshops after I graduated from the University of Maryland, University College, I began writing young adult fiction with purpose. I joined the Maryland Writers’ Association and Romance Writers of America and became an approved artist with the Maryland State Arts Council.

Welcome. Uh, what should I call you, young man?
Boy!
Really? Okay. Boy, what is it like have a monster living in your house?
It’s great! Monster and I are best friends, we do everything together. But he can be a handful. Like once we wanted to go camping and–
Lets go build a tree house! Doesn’t that sound cool? I want to build a 20 story tree house!
Monster, we need to do this interview to help us sell the book. Once we’re done, we can go and build a tree house. Sorry, like I said, he’s a handful, but life is always really fun!

There is way to much to do at night like read books, and play games, and eat, and watch T.V. and–

What? I like to do a lot of stuff. There is only so much time during the day. When else am I supposed to write a song? Or learn about the symphony?

Okay, Monster’s favorite is Monster Needs His Sleep. What is your favorite book?
Monster is right about Monster Needs His Sleep, but I really like The Dark by Lemony Snicket. Monster has a fear of the dark, just like Lazlo, so reading it to Monster before bedtime helps Monster relax.

Oh I love Christmas! But that time I got worried we weren’t going to have a Christmas tree and Santa wasn’t going to visit!
Yeah, that was a close one. But you came up with a great idea to save the day!
Don’t forget! Halloween will soon be here and I am going to need another costume.
And when spring rolls around again, its time for sports and you’re going to need to exercise!
But I really wanted to learn how to cook. Do you think Mom will let me use her apron?

Skittles or M&Ms?
Ambrosia-flavored M&Ms. If only ambrosia would turnme into an immortal like almost everyone else at Mount Olympus Academy!
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
Maybe that I named my snakes. I’ve got a dozen of theminstead of hair, thanks to that brainy goddessgirl Athena’s magical spell.They’re vegetarians. Also, my family’s pretty weird—my mom’s a sea monster andmy dad’s a sea hog. My sisters are immortal. Lucky them.
What is your favorite quote?
Don’t mess with my snakes. You can quote me.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Stealth-stalking my supercrush. If he ever finds out,I’ll die though.
If you had 24 hours alone how would you spend it?
Studying, unfortunately. I’m a mortal and I have a hardtime keeping up with immortals at MOA. If you tell anyone that, I’ll sic mysnakes on you.

Q&A With Suz Korb and Eve Eden
Hi, Eve, I’m Suz. Thanks for joining me for this Q&A session. So, what do you do when you’re not fighting off zombies?
I go to Twin Forest High. I get to be part of the senior year fashion show in a few weeks, so I’m even more pee-owed at those gross rotting zombies for taking away my sewing time!
Who do you live with?
My parents who are too much in love with each other. I can’t stand their PDAs all the time! Public Displays of Affection. Parents shouldn’t make-out in public. Barf.
Do you have siblings?
No, but Kimi is my best friend and she’s like a sister to me. Except for when she cries and gets her snot on me. Then I'd gladly disown her. HAHA ;)
Any other family members?
Well, there’s an old story on my mom’s side of the family that she has a long lost uncle who disappeared from Twin Forest when he was a teenager back in like the 1950s or something.
What were three things you liked to do when you were a child?
I liked to play in the sand at the park when the sprinklers came on. Then me and Kimi would make sandcastles with buckets of water and pretend we were at a beach. I’ve never actually been to a beach of any kind. I know, I’m sad and I totally need to get out of this town once in a while! Oh well, maybe someday I’ll get to see the ocean up close and personal.
What were you afraid of when you were a child?
Heights. After recent events though (floating through the skies of hell anyone?) I’ve gotten used to being way up high. lol
How did you respond to the physiological and psychological changes a zombie attack made in your life?
Huh? I don’t think anyone has come to terms with the zombie disaster. The whole town is shell-shocked!
What makes you happy now?
Creating new dress designs.
What is your greatest fear?
Zombies chomping my skull and eating my brain! Obviously.
What would you change about yourself if you could?
I’d change my white hair back to normal light brown!
Got any secrets that you never told anyone?
Well, I don’t exactly know how to break it to my parents that I know a vampire.
What do you want?
I want my dress design to win the school fashion show so that I can get into the London College of Art and Design!
