1. Preview: Russian Olive to Red King by Kathryn Immonen and Stuart Immonen is gorgeous

RORK_COVER_3C_RGB_MOCKUP1

Kathryn and Stuart Immonen are of course well known for their stellar superhero work, but in their “spare time” they turn out some more personal work which though smalelr and quiter, has an even greater scope. 2010’s Moving Pictures was a thoughtful and tense exploration of the relationship between a museum curator in Nazi occupied France, and a German officer set against the backdrop of World War II’s art pillaging.

Now they’re back with the collection of Russian Olive to Red King a very long in the making story about a woman whose lover dies. It’s described as “a tortured love story” featuring “petroglyphs and plane crashes and bad dogs and angry people.”

After being promised for several years, AdHouse is publishing the book in May. And here’s a preview. As you can see, it looks amazing.

2. A new edition of Street Angel is out today

sa2epreview 00001 A new edition of Street Angel is out today

Speaking of AdHouse, a second printing of Jim Rugg’s classic Street Angel is out today, the story of a homeless girl who fights crime while riding around on her skateboard. It was action packed, sad and beautiful.  Originally appearing in 2004, this book was, along with Scott Pilgrim, an early adapter of the “new mainstream” esthetic whereby comics broke out of both superhero and autobiographical tropes to reach a new, younger audience growing out of the manga boom. Originally published by Slave Labor the book had a cult following beforei being released by AdHouse last year. And now its in its second printing. Rachel Edidin has an overview of the book here.

The new edition has a pink pages and purple ink, making it perhaps the most perfect Street Angel edition of all. And just because I can here’s a preview:

3. Sophie Goldstein’s The Oven coming from AdHouse

ad.theoven.preview 00001 Sophie Goldsteins The Oven coming from AdHouse

CCS just keeps turning out interesting new cartoonists. Sophie Goldstein is a recent grad whose works defies easy categorization, except to say that she’s got a great line and a keen eye, she writes stories and anything can happen. And now AdHouse is bringing out The Oven by Goldstein in April. It’s set in a totalitarian future where “dwindling resources have driven the human race into domed cities where population controls are strictly enforced. When a young couple goes looking for an anti-government paradise in the desert they may have found more than they bargained for.”

4. AdHouse books is having a sale!

There’s a great warehouse sale going on at AdHouse Books:

It’s been a few years since we had a SALE, so I thought we’d make some AdSelections available again. Also, we have a fair amount of inventory coming to the warehouse this season, so we need to make room. Any order of $40 or more will get free shipping via a paypal refund. Just remind me when you place your order. (Also, feel free to add any non-sale items from our regular catalog to your order. We’d love to put them on sale, too, but we don’t have the inventory to do so.)

AdHouse specializes in books that are attractive and daring but accessible as well. A few suggestions/perennials:

5. AdHouse Announce Noah Van Sciver Collection ‘Youth is Wasted’ for 2014

This weekend sees Small Press Expo take place over in Maryland, and AdHouse have leapt out the gate early with the announcement that they are going to publish a collection of cartoonish Noah Van Sciver’s work as ’Youth is Wasted’, due in 2014.

youthiswasted

Collecting together primarily his series Blammo, the book will also feature a number of his other short stories published elsewhere, as part of various anthologies. Comics Reporter has more details, being as Tom Spurgeon is actually at SPX right now, and he notes that Youth is Wasted will be 112 pages long, priced at $12.95 softcover. Van Sciver is quoted:

The stories I’m putting into this book are very meaningful to me, and Adhouse is one of the few publishers I’d trust to present them tastefully. I can’t think of one Adhouse book that sucks.

Youth is Wasted is scheduled for publication in June 2014.

6. Adhouse to publish Boulet’s The Darkness

You may not know the name Boulet, but this French artist is one of the most prolific and talented cartoonists working. Maybe you will recall his disgustingly accomplished 24-hour comic from last year, The Darkness. Or his blog, which includes English versions of his comics. That first link is getting a printed version in the US, courtesy of AdHouseIt's due in April to tie in with Boulet's 2013 US tour, and will be printed in a limited quantity. Hopefully this is only the first US edition of Boulet's work to see print. Here's a wee preview:

7. Coming Attractions: March 2012, Part Two

.

Here are a selection of books due out this month. All of the information presented below [aside from my aside/snide comments] are from publisher or distributor websites.

ALL information is subject to change, and something which might ship this month to a comics shop might show up months later in regular bookstores.  So, if you see something here which has been out for a while, that’s why.  Just consider it a reminder, in case you didn’t notice it the first time.

Unless it’s something amazing (like omnibus volumes), I tend to ignore ongoing books series.  You either know about the series, or unlikely to pick it up if there are numerous volumes on the shelves. Yes, I know it’s almost April.  But many publishers announce their new titles via “Out This Week” posts, so that’s why I wait.  (And some don’t even do that!)

I do work for a bookseller, so everything posted here has nothing to do with my day job.

Author Bio: Jason hails from Oslo, Norway, but currently resides in the south of France. The Harvey and Eisner Award-winner continues to create new books at a breakneck pace-his books include Werewolves of Montpellier; Low MoonPocket Full of Rain and Other StoriesHey, Wait…Sshhhh! The Iron Wagon; What I Did(collecting the previous three volumes); I Killed Adolf HitlerThe Last Musketeer; The Left Bank GangWhy Are You Doing This? The Living and the DeadMeow, Baby! You Can’t Get There from HereTell Me Something; and Almost Silent(collecting the previous four volumes) and (with Fabien Vehlmann) Isle of 100,000 Graves.

Summary: Another all-original collection of full-color graphic novellas in the format of Low Moon, Athos in America takes its title from the lead story, a prequel of sorts to the graphic novel The Last Musketeer, in which the seemingly ageless swashbuckler turns up in a bar in 1920 New York and relates the tale of how he went to Hollywood to play himself in a film version of The Three Musketeers. Another tie-in with a previous Jason story occurs in “The Smiling Horse,” in which the characters from the story “&” in Low Moon attempt to kidnap a woman.

Also in this volume: “The Brain That Wouldn’t Virginia Woolf,” a mash-up of The Brain That Wouldn’t Die and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, told in reverse chronological order; the Bukowski pastiche “A Cat From Heaven” in which Jason works on his comic, has a reading in a comic book store, gets drunk and makes a fool of himself; the dialogue-free (all the text occurs in thought balloons) “Tom Waits on the Moon,” in which we follow four people (one of them a scientist working on a teleportation machine) until something goes wrong; and “So Long Mary Ann,” a prison-escape love-triangle story.

8. Coming Attractions: April 2011

.

The following is a selection of new comics titles due to be published in April 2011.   This list is not comprehensive, just what I’ve discovered browsing the Internet.  Below, you’ll find selected titles which caught my interest.  If you would like to browse forthcoming graphic novels and related books at your leisure, click here. These are not necessarily titles I will purchase, but which I will definitely look at once they arrive at my local comics shop or bookstore.

If you click that link above, you’ll see all the graphic novels at BN.com, sorted by date.  Lots of  graphic novels (and related books) scheduled from May to December.  Of course, there will be even more titles added and announced in time for the Holidays!  (You might want to use your tax return to buy some bookshelves.)

Please be advised that publication dates are not set in stone, titles may change, and covers may be altered. Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library.  I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic. If you feel I’ve neglected or slighted a title, publisher, or creator, please feel free to mention it in the comments below. Yes, you may promote your own work, but please include the ISBN for easy searching (and shopping!)

Disclaimer: I am employed by Barnes & Noble. This and any other posts by me at this site have no official connection to B&N.   As always, feel free to send us your PR. Even better, send us some free books!

9. Duncan goes digital

201101190224.jpg
Riding a wave of fantastic reviews (including one in the New York Times) Duncan the Wonder Dog by Adam Hines was the rookie sensation of late 2010. Unfortunately the success also meant a quick sell-out for publisher AdHouse. Although a second printing is on its way, but it won’t be availble until March. However, publisher Chris Pitzer has announced that you can now purchase he complete book in digital form from MyDigitalComics

for $9.95. In an interview at ComicsAlliance Pitzer explains more about the decision:

I approached Comixology originally since we have the majority of our library through their system. The problem was that they couldn’t just release Duncan to the Ipad or computer. It had to also go mobile, which mean thousands of hours in programming the work for the small screen. We didn’t have the resources to do that, and they didn’t. So it opened up a chance for MyDigitalComics and AdHouse to work together. I’ve had fond dealings with DCBS and InStockTrades, so I felt it was time to try this.

PR below:

MyDigitalComics (MDC), an up and coming player in the digital comics market place, and AdHouse Books are coming together this week to offer AdHouses’ critically acclaimed Duncan The Wonder Dog in three different digital formats. Duncan The Wonder Dog was conceived and created by cartoonist Adam Hines and has been widely praised since it’s late 2010 release. With the first printing of the ambitious work completely selling out, and a second printing on the way this Spring, MyDigitalComics will be offering the book for purchase as digital download in both .PDF and .CBZ formats, as well as in its onsite page flipper.

With titles from publishers like Top Cow, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite, Devil’s Due, TwoMorrows, and now AdHouse, MyDigitalComics has been aggressively reaching out to publishers from all levels of the industry to make as many new and exciting titles available to readers as possible. MDC is also part of the Discount Comic Book Service (DCBS) family, which also includes sibling store, InStockTrades. Discount Comic Book Service is one of the nation’s largest comics retailers.

Cameron Merkler is the co-founder of DCBS, InStockTrades, and MyDigitalComics. “We’re very excited about this new addition to the MDC library and family. AdHouse is a publisher who offers a great library of titles that appeal to a broad ranger of readers, especially those who are looking for something new and thought provoking,” says Merkler. “We’ve been working with AdHouse for a number of years with both DCBS and InStockTrades, and we’re thrilled to be taking the next step forward with them in the digital market place.”

“I’ve enjoyed working with DCBS and InStockTrades with our previous efforts,” says Chris Pitzer, publisher of AdHouse Books, “so it was nice to work with them to make the work of Duncan available in a digital format.”

“AdHouse put out two of my favorite OGNs of 2010 with Afrodisiac and Duncan the Wonder Dog,” says Zack Kruse, marketing director for DCBS. “Duncan is
