1. Bakery Art

In class this week we created bakery art, learned about the profession of Baker and the yummy creations they make. Our Scribble Kids created collage portraits of Bakers holding their wares.

First we learned all about proportion and how to correctly place features when drawing the face. The students were to place their eyes half-way down the face, with the eyebrows slightly above them. It’s amazing what placement can do to make things look more realistic! We also added a ‘connecting shape’ to our circle faces to create the jaw.

Then we added chef hats and bodies for our characters. The kids had great fun creating textured eyebrows. I was surprised there were no mustaches in this class.

After gluing the head and shoulders down on 12×18″ paper, we added arms to the characters. Then there was a hand drawing demo that was challenging for some children, but they will get it with practice! Finally we added plates with hand drawn delicious baked goods.

Here are our final artworks!

2. Little Scribblers Doughnut Art

Congratulations to 3 Little Scribblers this week at our doughnut art class. They used our ages 3+ training scissors for the first time, cut out circles (a challenge for newbies) and frosted them with purple homemade puffy paint and sprinkles. Nice work, girls!

5. there's always room for . . .

Jiggle wiggle wobble romp!

(say that fast three times)

Lately, I've been cheating on Nutella with Mr. Jell-O. Shhhhh!

I need something to feed my color-starved cravings, since Spring isn't quite here yet. Jell-O seems a safe diversion, a throwback to childhood and simpler times. Easy to make, easy to swallow, easy to love.

Besides, what other food knows how to wiggle?

I've been having fun learning about gelatin art. It must be a very tricky medium to work with. San Francisco-based Jell-O artist Liz Hickok likes creating gelatinous cityscapes and landscapes. Her scale model of San Francisco is her most well known work, though she's also done other cities like Wilmington, Scottsdale, NYC, and famous buildings like the White House. Love the jewel tones and how beautiful everything looks when lit from below.

In England they call Jell-O, "jelly." Two well known jelly artists,
Sam Bompas and Harry Parr, were commissioned by Kraft to construct this map of the U.S. It's nearly six and half feet long and required 80 gallons of Jell-O. Cool that it includes a few landmarks.

How I love this green light bulb, fashioned by Manhattan artist Brendan Berg. Wish I could touch it!

I must admit that before last week I didn't know there was a Jell-O Mold Mistress of Brooklyn. Here are some of Victoria Belanger's creations. So purty!

7. fun with fondant: wake up little sushi ☺

Happy Columbus Day!

Hope you've been having a nice holiday weekend.

Just had to share this two-part video of TLC's Fabulous Cakes episode featuring boutique bakery, Caked Las Vegas. Owner Carolyn Portuondo, a graduate of Punahou School in Hawai'i, gave up a career in Medicine to follow her passion for baking. Her all-cake sushi boat is simply a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Sit back, relax, sip your favorite beverage, and watch a great cake artist at work:

*This post has been brought to you by Fondant, a sweet, creamy sugar paste used in candies and icings. In the last 10 years, rolled fondant has become wildly popular among pastry chefs in the U.S. because of its versatility, pliability, and ease of dyeing. Think of it as bakers' playdough.

Special thanks to my half-sister, Sylvia, for sharing the links!

8. le petit déjeuner: paintings by carol gillott

Bonjour mon amis!

To get your week off to a sweet start, here are some watercolor paintings by New York-based artist Carol Gillott. You may know her from her beautiful blog, Paris Breakfast. She travels to Paris several times a year to shoot photographs and get fresh inspiration for her paintings. A very nice job, indeed, to dream up Parisian fantasies every day!

"Ladurée Rose Framboise Cupcakes"

Carol has some lovely original watercolors for sale featuring delicious morning and tea time treats. Check out her Etsy Shop, where you'll find "Eiffel Tower of Macarons" and "Ladurée Rose Framboise Cupcakes," or see the full line at her flickr photostream. These are 9" x 11" and fit nicely in a 12" x 16" frame.

Couldn't resist sharing several of her wonderful Paris facades. You can inquire about prices and availability through her website. Enjoy!

         *This one especially for Candice!

Trés charmant, non?

9. stéphanie kilgast: small plate, huge talent!

"Lavendar Birthday Tray" for sale at PetitPlat Etsy Shop.

Ooh-la-la!

I'm kissing my fingertips again -- happens every time I see something just too beautiful to eat.

Just as well, because Stéphanie Kilgast's miniature sculptures are made from polymer clay. How small are they? Check it:

Let us feast with our eyes! Mmmmmmmm (don't you love those tiny macarons?).

"Tropical Feast" dangle earrings.

Stéphanie in her atelier.

Stéphanie, who currently lives in France, has a masters degree in architecture. After discovering her passion for miniatures back in 2007, she decided to pursue sculpting food pieces full-time. Her business, PetitPlat Food Art, caters to dollhouse miniature collectors and jewelry lovers with discerning palates. All pieces in this post are entirely handmade by Stéphanie and most are available for purchase at her Etsy Shop.

Saw this Red Dot Cake and thought of Grace Lin's Ling & Ting:

"Raspberry Cakes."

I just ordered these earrings. Love the attention to detail and exquisite craftsmanship:

"Oreo Goodness" earrings.

"Get Food Get Sandwiches" earrings.

She has a lot of cupcake earrings for sale, but somehow I was smitten with the sub sandwich and Oreos. I know, right?

"Vanilla and Chocolate" cupcake earrings.

This Brownie Preparation Board is wonderful! Know anyone with a dollhouse who might like it? Stéphanie does 1:12 scale for dollhouses, and 1:6 playscale for fashion dolls like Barbie.

"Brownie Preparation Board."

As much as I love her sweets, I must say this loaf of bread ble

10. saturday sushi

Okay, how cute is this? A sushi costume for your dog!

You don't have a dog? What about some sushi slippers for yourself?

These are available for purchase on Etsy.

or a little munchkin?

You have your choice of toppings, and if you like, a different one for each foot.

Of course, nothing better to top off a sushi-inspired outfit than a cucumber salad bib. Just wish they made one in my size ☺!

If you like sculpture, check out these
Paramodel trucks created by Japanese artists. They combine toys with plastic food models (like the ones found in Japanese restaurant windows). These come with signed certificates of authenticity.

No surprise, now I'm hungry. What's your favorite sushi?

Enjoy your Saturday!
