I have the pleasure of participating in Yvonne Perry’s Blog Tour for The Sid Series ~ A Collection of Holistic Stories for Children. Yvonne and I are members of The Muse Conference Board (a yahoo group for authors and writers) and when the call went out to take part in the tour as a host, I jumped on board. In fact, so many bloggers jumped on board that Yvonne had to extend her tour. What a great way to start a tour!
I’m sure many of you know that Yvonne is a freelance writer and editor, award-winning Amazon.com bestselling author, podcast host, blogger extraordinaire, newsletter publisher, Internet marketing guru, and an outstanding keynote speaker who enjoys making people laugh.
She is a graduate of American Institute of Holistic Theology where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Metaphysics. Her style of writing is lovingly controversial and challenges people’s belief systems in order to help them move past what she calls “Sunday School mentality.” She has earned Platinum Expert Author status for her 170+ articles on spirituality, death, afterlife, spirit communication, suicide, and politics published on ezinearticles.com as well as many other online article directories.
As a ghostwriter and editor, Yvonne enjoys helping people get their message into a well-written book or article that is ready to publish. Yvonne is the owner of Writers in the Sky Creative Writing Services. Her personal strengths include excellent communication, writing and editing skills, publicity and marketing, team writing, and business management.
Yvonne’s newest endeavor is The Sid Series ~ A Collection of Holistic Stories for Children. Having self-published a bedtime children’s book myself, I was curious how Yvonne went about self-publishing her book.
Yvonne's Self-Publishing Process:
After self-publishing my first book in 2004, I knew what was involved when I started to publish my second book in 2005. I was willing to do the marketing legwork again, but I did not want to handle distribution. I had addressed hundreds of envelopes and made as many trips to the post office with my first book. At the time, the average self-published author could not get distribution through Ingram unless the book was printed by Lightning Source. This limitation made it difficult for authors to get their books into bookstores and on Amazon.com. Therefore, with my second book, I opted to go with Booksurge, a publish-on-demand affiliate of Amazon.com. I would have to sell it to them for 55 percent off the retail price, which means the author makes very little on the sale of one book. But, Amazon handled the distribution and added my book to Ingram’s catalogue where it could be ordered by any retail bookstore.
I had my third book published through Nightengale Press in 2007 and even though Nightengale is generous in the percentage of royalties they pay their authors, I knew I could make more per book or else offer the book at a lower price if I self-published. This was important because The Sid Series is a full-color book inside and out, and books with a color interior cost more to print than black and white ones. The book publishing industry has changed a lot in the past six years and Lightning Source started working directly with authors rather than publishers only.
In my research, I came across a self-publishing guru by the name of Morris Rosenthal. He informed me that publishers did not

This is great advice, Yvonne. I did not realize you could go as low as 30% with Lightning Source. Do you by chance know if a person can change their % after they have already put in thier % with LS? My books are through them, but at a higher %.
I continually learn from you and am so grateful.

Just catching up on the blog tous and I must say that I like what I've seen so far. Good luck, Yvonne.
I'm glad to see new folks stopping by the blogs I've visited on my tour!
I'm enjoying it. Learning a lot about my cousin that I missed growing up.
Yvonne, thanks for running through several iterations of the self-publishing process. Your comments show the elements that must be aligned before the author is in control of her creative work and the business of bringing it out in the world.
