Gouache and watercolor on illustration board
6 x 8.5 inches
Why am I doing these? Well, they're very satisfying and meditative. That's why.
I've been doing reading on sacred geometry, which includes mazes and labyrinths, fractals, spirals, the golden rectangle, cool weird mystical perfect patterns found in nature, all that stuff.
This one is called a Baltic Wheel as you may have gleaned from the title. I didn't name it that. Its an actual type of maze found around Scandinavia and thereabouts.
I did a much more restrained palette on this one. Maybe it was my mood. And the tiles are getting smaller too.
Hmmm...

Gouache on illustration board
This is based on a tantalizingly maze-like design in the Book of Kells. There is no entrance, and each quarter is a separate space.
I fiddled with it to make it into an actual working maze but gave up, deciding the original concept worked best after all.
Those monks knew what they were doing.

This is a simplified version of the labyrinth at Chartre Cathedral.
Mazes and labyrinths fascinate me. You may see more showing up here.
In fact, I'm sure you will.

This is mosaic #2. I'm really into this serpentine thing. I started it waaaaaaayyy down at the bottom of this blog, with the thorns. Then I continued it with the yarn pieces. And now I'm doing it in a more abstract way with the mosaics.
I've always loved mosaics. Ravenna, old Roman stuff, early Christian pieces, etc. I don't have an articulate intellectual analysis of how my work expresses the separate yet cohesive unity of each man's struggle to journey the path of life blah blah blah or anything like that. I'll try to work on something.
For now, I will just say I love painting little squares and making a neat picture.
That is just incredible, and beautiful!
Ooooo, I really like this one. Very meditative and calming.

I just dropped by to see your latest knitting in pencil.... and find mosaics in paint! Whatever will you think of next ?
Lovely work Paula.
Paula, I really enjoyed your mosaic wheel. I was wondering, did you draw in the tiles prior to putting the paint down or did you just do it as you painted?
Thanks,
Rob
